I have an old iphone 3 backup file that i need to load back onto an i phone 3, where do i place this file on pc so when i do a backup in itunes, the itunes software will know where to 'look' for it as a selection for a backup file
I have an iphone 3 backup file saved on harddrive. Need to restore it to my upgraded s/w 4.2.1 iphone3 thru iitunes. Need a place to 'land' this file. Using Windows 7 now.

If you are connecting to iTunes it should say the namve of the phone as it was set up. You can check the name in Settings/
Settings => General => About
The top listing should be Name with the name of the phone listed there. You can tap the arrow and it will let you rename the phone. Mine is listed as Thom's iPhone 4S.
This is the name that iTunes should display in the Navigation column on the left side of the screen. -

I have an old iphone 3G that I want to use as an ipod touch. It does have a sim card in it and it has been reset. For some reason it will not pick up my wireless network in my house, or any other wireless network. What could be the problem?

iTunes tells me, that I need to load version 11.1 in order to load a backup into my iPhone 5. I'm working with a windows PC and want to update my phone to iOS 7GM. version 11.0.5 is the highest I can get for windows. Can somebody help me?

Alot of those forums forget to mention, iTunes 11.0.5 will allow you to update to the iOS 7 Beta but your device will no longer work unless you have the developer version of iTunes as well....
I'd suggest you to research how to downgrade back to 6.1.3/4 and wait a few days for the iOS to be released, -

You can transfer the purchases you made on your old iPhone 3 by plugging it in to iTunes and doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases from your IPhone to the iTunes on your computer. This will get music you purchased in iTunes, apps, etc. (e.g., movies).
But for the rest you would need to restore a backup of your newly deceased computer. -
I have some old pagemaker files that I need to open so I have bought a G3 on ebay. It turns on OK but all that comes uo on the screen is an envelope with alternating question mark and apple logo. Any ideas?
I suggest you get 9.2. You need to install the same or later version of the OS. One some computer the shipped version has extra drivers. The drivers will not be in the official release in this case 9.1. They would be in 9.2.

Try holding down the option key then power on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.

Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down command+option+o+f
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
