I have to use XML in PL/SQL

Hi all,
I would like to know how to use XML in PL/sql. I would like to know how to go about it. I have installed Oracle 9i and what should I do next. I could not find any step by step documentation.
Please any help is appreciated.
Thanks

The following documentation on Oracle XML DB would be useful:
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/appdev.920/a96620/toc.htm
And this one about Oracle XDK for PL/SQL:

  • Have you used XML?

    I am curious does anyone, that has actually used any XML technology, consider the following question meaningful?
    Have you used XML?
    And what about the following questions.....
    If you are fluent in DOM do you consider youself fluent in XSLT and Web Services?
    If you are working with Web Services do you consider yourself fluent in Ant build files?
    If you hear that question do you just assume that it it is questioning the exact APIs that you are familar with or does it refer to all possible APIs?
    Given a "normal" XML file and nothing else, is it going to provide substantial information about anything?
    XML files themselves are so incredibilely hard to figure out that one must be an expert in the XML syntax itself to make any headway at all with the APIs that use them?

    Yes, I have used XML. But that's a lot like saying I have used ASCII.
    -- I don't do DOM. And I don't do schemas or DTDs.
    -- I have done some XSLT; I have written a 600-line XSLT that transforms a certain XML format into an HTML representation of one of our invoices. (They are complicated beasts.)
    -- I know nothing about Web services.
    -- I have written some basic Ant build files but I am definitely not fluent in that format.
    I learned pretty much everything I know about XML by lurking on the Mulberry XSLT mailing list for several months. And you'll notice there is a lot that I don't know about XML. But as your question implies, XML is not "a" technology. It's just a basis for a whole raft of technologies, many of which are over-architected monstrosities.

  • Using XML functions in SQL Developer

    Hi,
    I'm using OSD 1.5.3 on a WinXP machine. I love OSD and use it every day! But I think i found a little bug. When you use some Oracle XML functions like (XMLELEMENTS and XMLAGG) in your query (these functions return CLOB values) it hangs OSD.
    For Example:
    SELECT XMLELEMENT("Relation",
    XMLELEMENT("Name", 'Dennis'),
    XMLELEMENT("DateOfBirth", '09/28/1975')
    ) as Relation
    FROM DUAL;
    Are there some parameters I can set to prevent this, or is this a bug?
    Kind Regards,
    D.

    Your query works fine for me from SQL Dev 1.5.3 (JDK 1.6.0_06), using either a JDBC or TNS connection (Oracle Client 9.2) to a 10.2.0.3 DB. Another thing which I have no idea if it is relevant (someone else may be able to say) is the following line from Help > About > Properties:
    oracle.xdkjava.compatibility.version     9.0.4
    Given that it works fine over TNS connections from SQL*Plus and PL/SQL Developer, I would assume that it is something related to your SQL Developer setup, unless you are using a different version of the Oracle client for these tools.

  • How to Use XML and PL/SQL ?

    Hi !
    I have to read the XML file and I have to insert the values into Database by using Pl/SQL.
    I tried with DBDOM. But i have not succeded.
    I faced the UTL_FILE invalid_operation exception.
    Can Anyone give some example to insert the values into table like EMP.
    Thanks in Advance

    Chapter 5 of "Building Oracle XML Applications" is full of PL/SQL-based XML examples, among them, several examples that do just this.
    There are several different approaches to attack the problem. One is more declarative using XSLT transformations and our XML SQL Utility, the other is more programmatic and uses our PL/SQL-based XML Parser's DOM implementation to search for bits you want to insert and insert them.
    The Oracle XSQL Servlet distribution also ships with several examples.

  • XML parsing with SQL/PL-SQL

    Hi,
    My question is about how can an XML message can be best parsed using SQL/PL-SQL.
    The scenario is as follow. The XML message is stored in a CLOB; only some of its data needs to be extracted; there are six different types of structures of XML; the size of each XML is about 50 lines (maximum depth level is 3); the data could be written in English or Greek or French or German or Russian; this is going to be done every hour and the parsing is going to be against 3,000 records approx.
    In the development, I need to take into consideration performance. We are using Oracle 10, but we could migrate to Oracle 11 if necessary.
    Apologies for this basic question but I have never done XML parsing in SQL/PL-SQL before.
    Thank you.
    PS I have copied this question to the XML forum.

  • OIA - Importing nested entitlements using XML file

    Hi,
    I am looking for some information on importing nested entitlements (like RACF information) into OIA. From what I gather sofar, looks like I have to use XML to import nested entitlements. But sofar, I have no luck finding any documentation on how to go about it.
    If anybody has any information that you can share, that would be great.
    Thank you

    If you're saying that you have Reader 9 and Acrobat Pro 7 on the same machine, please be aware that this is not a recommended or supported configuration. Although it's possible, people have reported a number of problems with such a setup.

  • [Forum FAQ] How do i use xml stored in database as dataset in SQL Server Reporting Services?

    Introduction
    There is a scenario that users want to create SSRS report, the xml used to retrieve data for the report is stored in table of database. Since the data source is not of XML type, when we create data source for the report, we could not select XML as Data Source
    type. Is there a way that we can create a dataset that is based on data of XML type, and retrieve report data from the dataset?
    Solution
    In this article, I will demonstrate how to use xml stored in database as dataset in SSRS reports.
    Supposing the original xml stored in database is like below:
    <Customers>
    <Customer ID="11">
    <FirstName>Bobby</FirstName>
    <LastName>Moore</LastName>
    </Customer>
    <Customer ID="20">
    <FirstName>Crystal</FirstName>
    <LastName>Hu</LastName>
    </Customer>
    </Customers>
    Now we can create an SSRS report and use the data of xml type as dataset by following steps:
    In database, create a stored procedure to retrieve the data for the report in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) with the following query:
    CREATE PROCEDURE xml_report
    AS
    DECLARE @xmlDoc XML;
    SELECT @xmlDoc = xmlVal FROM xmlTbl WHERE id=1;
    SELECT T.c.value('(@ID)','int') AS ID,
    T.c.value('(FirstName[1])','varchar(99)') AS firstName,
    T.c.value('(LastName[1])','varchar(99)') AS lastName
    FROM
    @xmlDoc.nodes('/Customers/Customer') T(c)
    GO
    P.S. This is an example for a given structured XML, to retrieve node values from different structured XMLs, you can reference here.
    Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) OR SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). If this is the first time we have opened SQL Server Data Tools, click Business Intelligence
    Settings for the default environment settings.
    On the File menu, point to New, and then click Project.
    In the Project Types list, click Business Intelligence Projects.
    In the Templates list, click Report Server Project.
    In Name, type project name.
    Click OK to create the project.
    In Solution Explorer, right-click Reports, point to Add, and click New Item.
    In the Add New Item dialog box, under Templates, click Report.
    In Name, type report name and then click Add.
    In the Report Data pane, right-click Data Sources and click Add Data Source.
    For an embedded data source, verify that Embedded connection is selected. From the Type drop-down list, select a data source type; for example, Microsoft SQL Server or OLE DB. Type the connection string directly or click Edit to open the Connection Properties
    dialog box and select Server name and database name from the drop down list.
    For a shared data source, verify that Use shared data source reference is selected, then select a data source from the drop down list.
    Right-click DataSets and click Add Dataset, type a name for the dataset or accept the default name, then check Use a dataset embedded in my report. Select the name of an existing Data source from drop down list. Set Query type to StoredProcedure, then select
    xml_report from drop down list.
    In the Toolbox, click Table, and then click on the design surface.
    In the Report Data pane, expand the dataset we created above to display the fields.
    Drag the fields from the dataset to the cells of the table.

    I have near about 30 matrics. so I need a paging. I did every thing as per this post and it really works for me.
    I have total four columns. On one page it should show three and the remaining one will be moved to next page.
    Problem occurs when in my first row i have 3 columns and in next page if I have one columns then it show proper on first page but on second page also it gives me three columns insted of one. the first column data is exactly what I have but in remaining two
    columns it shows some garbage data.
    I have data like below.
    Metric ColumnNo RowNo
    1 1
    1
    2 2
    1
    3 3
    1
    4 1
    2
    so while grouping i have a row parent group on RowNo and Column group on ColumnNo.
    can anyone please advice on this.

  • Tree query using XML SQL

    Hi Mark,
    To a certain extent one can modify the xml generated by
    manipulating the query and by using some of the tag name
    customizations which the XSU allows. Unfortunately, what you
    want to create will take more than that; you will have to use
    XSLT - xml transformation language, part of XSL. You will find
    and XSL processor packaged with the oracle xml parser v2 (see
    oraxsl). You can find more info on XSLT at www.w3c.org

  • Generating multi-level XML in Oracle 8i using XML-SQL utility

    Oracle 8i has a limitation when it comes to the object types. Only one-level nesting of collection is allowed. Oracle 9i apparently removes this limitation.
    I am trying to generate XML for a hierarchical (conceptually) structure. To do that I am using XML-SQL utility (XSU) running agains an object view build on top of the relational data. The problem is the limit to onelevels of colelction nesting. Oracle 8i gives you a way to create a view with more levels of nesting by using references (REF). The problem is that when XSU runs agains a view with the references, it inserts the references into the XML document (instead of dereferencing them).
    Is there a way to generate XML with Oracle 8i with more than two levels of collection nesting?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    I created Proxy service(ALSB3.0) to get records from DB table. I have used Xquery function(fn-bea:execute-sql()). Using simple SQL query I got single record, but my table having multiple records. Please suggest how to get multiple records using fn-bea:execute-sql() and how to assign them in ALSB variable.

    Hi,
    Am facing the same issue stated above that I couldnt get all the records in the table that am querying in the Proxyservice.
    For example:
    fn-bea:execute-sql('EsbDataSource', 'student', 'select Name from StudentList' ) is the query that am using to fetch the records from the table called StudentList which contains more than one records like
    Id Name
    01 XXX
    02 YYY
    03 ZZZ
    I tried to assign the result of the above query in a variable and while trying to log the variable, I can see the below
    <student>
    <Name>XXX</Name>
    </student>
    I want to have all the records from my table in xml format but it's not coming up. I get the value only from the first row of my table.
    Please suggest.

    yes, I am able to create the file to D: , but didn't check with the C:.

    SELECT CAST(x AS XML)
    FROM OPENROWSET(
    BULK 'C:\Temp\books1.xml',SINGLE_BLOB) AS T(x)
    ) AS T(x)
    CROSS APPLY x.nodes('bookstore/book') AS x(book);
    SELECT BookID, Title
    FROM W3Books;
    I executed my revised sql and I got the following Message and Results:
    Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 6
    Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'BookID', table 'XML_XQUERY.dbo.W3Books'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
    The statement has been terminated.
    (0 row(s) affected)
    Results:
    BookID    Title
    I don't know why I just got the names of columns in Results and the "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'BookID', table 'XML_XQUERY.dbo.W3Books'; column does not allow nulls, insert fails." in Messages.  Please kindly help, advise me
    how to correct the errors and respond again.
    Many Thanks again,
