I'm in a world of hurt

For 2 days I fought with activating my nook. I found the answer here. Now my problem is that it wamts my first/last nane and cc# to unlock the nook. Evidently I must have mis-typed when I registered and now I can't unl;ock the nook. Is there a way to pull up my registeration and find out these values?

  • In a world of hurt and need some advice!!

    Hi:
I installed Boot Camp on my MacBook pro. Somehow along the way I must have trashed all the original Mac stuff on my computer. I generated the two partitions as directed with the one for Windows set for 32 gigs.
After all sorts of ups and downs Widows works just fine. Only when I tried to start up on the Mac did I find no Mac to be had! The error message said "could not locate the Mac OS boot volume". Oh O
No panic yet: luckily I did follow one step correctly, I put all my original contents on a "back up" external drive. So from "Boot Camp" I put the MacPro in Target mode. I thought I would just dump the entire contents in the ash can and start from scratch. With all I have learned over the last week I will be up and running in no time!
Nope, now comes the panic! It tell me I don't have the authority to do such a thing and off the top of my head I have failed to come up with a way. There must be one!
    Help!!!
    And thanks.
    Dan Page

Are you connecting your Mac Pro to your MBP?
If so, it sounds to me like you're trying to throw items into the trash & Finder is throwing that error--sound right?
The reason it's not working is this:
even as an administrator, you don't have the right permissions to throw away another user's items (that's what the computer thinks you're trying to do, and I think that's true even if you have the same username on both machines).
Have you tried to repair your Mac Pro's hard disc using Disk Utility on your install DVD?

  • A whole world of hurt!

    Dear all,
I'm new to this so please excuse any faux pas. I have a mac mini running OSX.6 server. I do not seem to be able to get remote machines (on the internal network) to communicate with the server. For instance in Mail, there is an account name for the user as supplied by the server but whatever I do it remains grey and unusable? The same for i-cal, i-chat etc. The web services seem to work fine (other than the remote machine seems to report a syntax error if trying to send a web mail.) I have now set this server up a number of times from scratch, closely following all the documentation I can find (which is not that much, it has to be said) but to no avail. I think I am slowing going mad, but that I can handle. If anyone out there has any ideas I would be very grateful for a hand with this.
    Cheers
    Joe

Glad I am still using Office 2011. I don't create Forms in Word or exceL and I use the Print menu > PDF > Save as Adobe PDF  (Adobe's Print Driver)  OR either Drop directly on Acrobat.  And allow Acrobat to create the PDF then I add the for fields in Acrobat.
I do it I get around a 15 year old problem Of URL and MailTo links not working.  Still have issue with if use Word to make a Word or Phrase in Word a Link By use of Insert menu > URL it still hasn't been fixed after 15 years.

From the Microsoft Office 365 advertising:
Do more with your docs: Pop in an online video, open a PDF and edit the content, align pictures and diagrams with minimal fuss. The new Read Mode is clean and distraction-free—and it works great on tablets. Teaming-up is better too, with direct connections to your online spaces and streamlined review features like Simple Markup and comments.
I cannot wait for my copy.

  • Launching Mail causes world of hurt

When I launch mail now starting this morning, my dock freezes (and is totally unresponsive) and expose no longer works. Every other program works fine when opened. Used Disk Warrior and Cocktail to check out preferences, corruption, etc. When I go to system preferences for the dock, the beach ball comes up and even when I make changes, nothing happens. What can I do?

    Hi again viajero,
Those symptoms suggest too full mailboxes perhaps. If you are determined to reinstall Mail.app you may wish to try deleting your com.apple.Mail.plist file found in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Mail.plist first and see if you can reset up your Mail account. You'll lose all your settings and email but you won't have to reinstall if it works. Make sure to write down all your Mail settings first in your Mail>Mail Menu>Preferences>Accounts>Account Information.
The next time you try to start Mail.app you should get a message asking if you wish to setup Mail.app.
Only do this if you are sure you do not wish to troubleshoot the issue further and are going to reinstall anyways.
post back if that fixes the problem,

  • My IPod is in a world of hurt

    Where to begin...
A few days ago my ipod worked fine. I got in my car and hooked it up to my radio and a folder popped up with the exclamation mark. Went to bestbuy (that's where i got it) and they told me to update my software. So I have updated both itunes and my ipod software. Then I got an unhappy ipod symbol. Poor Girl. Some how I got past that and everything was working except it wouldn't link up to the computer and all the songs were gone of the ipod. I put it into disk mode but the computer still didn't recognize. I tried to restore the ipod but got an error message (ipod service error). I'm out of ideas. How do I fix this? Please help!!!!

    hiya!
I tried to restore the ipod but got an error message (ipod service error).

  • World of Warcraft DC's using Verizon Security Suite - fixes?

I am a new Verizon Fios customer and when I originally had the service installeda couple weeks ago,  I did not install the security suite right away.  I was using Norton 360 (Comcast) on my desktop and Windows 7 security services on my laptop.  All was working well in terms of internat access, speeds, and WoW performance.
I then proceeded to install the security suite on my desktop and laptop and now WoW DC's after approximately 5 minutes whether I use direct connect (desktop) or wireless (laptop).  Did not have any issues before installing the security suite.  Turning off the features I have access to in the menu's does not help the situation.  Using my laptop on a DSL wireless network at work location is fine with no disconnects.
If I am running the Ventrilo client software it drops connection as well and I have to close and relaunch it to get it working again.  The DC and Ventrilo issue happen simultaneously.  The DC's occur even without Ventrilo ruunning.
Were do I begin as I dread calling support and get pointed to Mcafee and Blizzard when the issue seems to be related to the Verizon router/fios services and probably Mcafee interaction.  Also what is the "cleaner" program to remove Mcafee from my system?
Thank-you in advance for your constructive input.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Not a fan of the Verizon Security Suite -- I think there are much better solutions with less overhead and at less cost than this product.   With that said ... let's see about what you might be experiencing.
This sounds like a problem we were experiencing with our enterprise implementation of McAfee a few months back with their firewall/HIPS product losing track of "state" on open connections and closing them or inappropriately blocking subsequent packets because it say the traffic as "out of sequence".   Try to find and temporarily disable the Firewall and HIPS part of the security product (might be in the Systray or you might need to go into Control Panel and find the firewall software and disable it there).  See if that fixes the problem ... if so, then you have the same bug we encountered.   Our problem ended up being a hot fix from the vendor.
Also, you did completely remove Norton 360 and all components before installing the Verizon product didn't you?  If not, having contending security products on the same machine can give you are world of hurt.
The "cleaner" to which you refer is to address a specific scenario where you can end up removing the McAfee products using their uninstaller but for some reason parts get left behind or the uninstaller fails with an error.   The cleaner will go in and find the errant parts of McAfee which got left behind and properly attempt to remove them.

  • Can I move an iTunes Library to a different disk/account?

It's probably been covered before, but what will happen if I move the Library file and the .xml file from the iTunes Folder to another disk (Internal PBP17).
I started using an External Disk when my library outgrew my internal drive. I went about it incorrectly and had a bad time  re-creating my library. All 9000 songs are back and all is well. The quandry is how to keep my internal updated with the new activity from my external drive were my 'normal' library lives. The full Library is almost at 1 TB now
The active library lives on a 2 TB LaCie d2 external Drive. A Dupe drive, of the original, backs up the library every day with CCC. I only want keep a 150 GB from the External (home) library backed up on the internal PBP17 (for travel). as the other content would not fit.
How to keep the internal PBP17 Synced with the External? I looked at several 'sync folder apps' but they seem to fail with the Structure of the permissions on the iTunes Music Folder in the Media Folder. I would like keep the Music/Apps/Ringtones/Podcasts synced and not bring the Movies or TV to the internal, which has 550GB standard Apple drive, to keep the space open on the internal.
Is there an easy way or am I forced to do it piece by piece? I Initially copied the Music Folder from the current library to the Internal drives iTunes folder then had iTunes find the data. This resets everything and I lose Playlists/Playcounts/ and other pertinent data.
Can I just drag the iTunes Library and .xml files over to the internal or am I going to be in for a world of hurt?

Well I read here that moving the folder to a new Drive was no biggy. I knew that I was worried about just moving a portion on the folder over (just music and a few movies). But I moved it and all is perfect. For a little while I thought I lost my Music Output. I had turned off the connection in the multiple speakers pref, bottom of iTunes window..
All is spectacular again. Oki Doki

  • Trying to install Adobe Reader and won't run!

I uninstalled Adobe Reader because nothing would come up when websites had PDF files any more.   I figured it would be really easy to reinstall Reader from the website and now nothing happens when I try to run the installer.   (I had to download the installer in Safe Mode, by the way, because my computer didn't let me install it through the normal means).  I have a lot of pdf files on my computer I need to view every day and now I'm in a world of hurt because I can't open them.  Can someone please help me figure out how to get my installer to work?  Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean about clearing everything after Adobe.  I did want to say that when I try to download the installer, I get the error message --
"Setup.exe application error.  The instruction at 0x02a10a4 referenced memory at 0x0a28f0e.3.  The memory could not be read.  Click on OK to terminate the program."
When I try to close the error box, it basically stops everything from working.
I got the installer to work only as far as to get through the first phase.  When it starts to actually download, this error message comes up.

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2 never finishes searching for updates and use 100% of CPU.

Hi everyone, I am having issues updating a clean Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2, so any help with be appreciated cause I've already tried all my cards for the past 5 days in this particular issue without success.
All I did so far is installing Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 2, open IE to update, it keeps searching for updates and never stop, after 20mn to 30mn the process svchost.exe start using 100% of my CPU.
I already tried the following scenarios:
1-  Install IE8, install the update KB927891 and the Windows Update Agent 3.0 (I already had this one installed). Reboot and run windows update trough IE8 and the problem did not solved.
2- Install those 2 software "MicrosoftFixit.wu.MATSKB.Run" and "MicrosoftFixit50777", open IE to update, it still hangs and continues eating my CPU. This is the output of "MicrosoftFixit".
Windows Update error 0x8007000D(2014-01-06-T-06_06_34A) --> Not Fixed
Cryptographic service components are not registered (This service is actually running successfully) --> Not Fixed
3- I found the following script that would register some DLL, deleting the "SoftwareDistribution" and forcing windows update to solve the problem and nothing happened either.
    Link to script:

Herein is the root cause of your issue. A topic that's been discussed in several blogs, forums, and even in the media since September regards a known issue with attempting to patch IE6 RTM via Windows Update.
Aside from that particular issue... browsing the Internet with an unpatched instance of IE6, especially from a Windows Server system, is also asking for a world of hurt.
    Might I suggest the following:
Download the IE8 for Windows Server 2003 installer to a thumb drive.
Download the latest Cumulative Security Update for IE8 for Windows Server 2003 to a thumb drive.
Reinstall Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2.
Upgrade to IE8 from the thumb drive installer and apply the
    Cumulative Security Update.
Now your machine is capable of safely browsing to Windows Update to install the rest of the updates (well, maybe, there's also all those other Security Updates from the past seven years that your machine still has vulnerabilites for -- even those seven
years of updates are going to take a Very Long Time to scan for, download, and install).
Why don't you have a WSUS server? -- noting, wryly, that you've posted in the *WSUS* forum.

  • What I wish I'd Known Before My Lion Server Install

The truth is that I am on my FIFTH Lion Server install on the same box this week. While I was working on #4, I went ahead and submitted a ticket with Apple and arranged a timeslot for this morning to work with them to help me past my struggles with Lion Server. This post is the result of that experience. Big props to Apple support techs Chuck and Don - you know who you are!
What I Wish I'd Known Before My Lion Server Install
    1. Do NOT migrate user accounts, apps, and files, until AFTER you have the Server set up and working correctly.
    - This one tip, which is brilliantly simple, would have saved me four very long days of head bashing.
    2. Server Admin Tools are mandatory.
    - The first time around I used the Server App to configure the system (after an upgrade install, and subsequently after a clean install + migration).
    - Server Admin allows you to set up the foundation of your server - which it NEEDS!
    - DNS - configure a local, pseudo domain for your server if you're doing this at home. Something like "mynet.private" - if you don't, your SSL certificates can get all jacked up, your clients will not trust your certs. This breaks a lot of stuff.
    3. Do NOT accept the mDNS .local domain suffix for your Server
    - At each step, if something auto-fills your server name as name.local reject it, and use the fully qualified domain name that you set up above (server.mynet.private).
    - If you do not do this, anything that requires certificates could/will have big problems.
    4. Enable services one at a time. Reboot after EACH major phase past the core Lion install.
    - Base install ... Server install. REBOOT
    - DNS configuration. REBOOT
      - validate your host name - I needed to force a 'changeip' command because there was a problem with the HOSTNAME retaining the mdns .local domain name.
    - OD Master config. REBOOT
    - Set up Podcast Producer (which will also setup your Xgrid). REBOOT
    5. Take images of your hard drive as you go.
    - Once I got the core server installed, the basic services above, I rebooted and held the option key, then restarted on the Recovery HD image.
    - Use Disk Utility to take a snapshot image of your hard disk so you can get back to this wonderful place of everything working! It's cheap insurance, and adds a bit of extra time, but is well worth it. If you leave the default settings alone (the 'compressed' one in particular) it will use as little space as possible. My server at this stage of configuration created a 4GB disk image.
    6. Use the Migration Assistant After the above
    - Now you can migrate your apps
    - Migrate your users
    - etc.
If you use the Migration option while you're installing the server, or if you upgrade on top of your Snow Leopard (or whatever), I can almost guarantee you that you are in for a world of hurt.
I struggled through all kinds of issues with files having embedded information, scattered throughout all the various subsystems, that gummed up my installation and would case all manner of the flakey Lion Server behavior that you read about ("Error Reading Configuration").
If you want to use Podcast Producer, or any of the Profile Manager features, the above methodology was the only way that I could get them to work. Often times I'd have everything working, then reboot and it would break. After I did the above, the system is as solid as a rock.
Today, I love Lion Server. Yesterday I was cursing it.
    Best of luck!!

There are 2 distinct apps in Lion Server.... Podcast (in Server app) and Podcast Producer (Server admin which is deemed legacy from SNS).  Podcast uses Podcast Publisher instead of Podcast Capture to produce, edit and submit to Podcast app.  Podcast doesn't requre Xgrid where PCP did. The two don't mix.
It's as clear as mud in all the documentation about this.
We're finding that Podcast Publisher has much more flexibility that Podcast Capture (edit, episodes & more), can use existing workflow from PCP, doesn't require xgrid, and podcasts can easily be managed by non-IT people via the Podcast wiki as opposed to the CLI pcast commands to edit & modify PCP feeds.
    Hope this helps.

  • If your remote will not connect, read this, it will most likely help you.

If your remote is not connecting, I can almost guarantee it is because you need to forward the ports on your router necessary to control it. I've suggested it to MANY people, and it has helped 100% of them. You need to forward ports TCP 3689 and UDP 5353.
If you don't know how to do this go to the website www.portforward.com, and click "Guides". Then, under Port Forwarding", click "Port Forwarding Guides by Router".
It doesn't matter if you're using a PC (which I am), or a Mac (which many of you are), this is more than likely what you need to do.
And for those of you who have had no problem whatsoever: I'd make sure your security is enabled. If it's not, yer in for a world of hurt if someone finds that out.
Please reply if this helped you, or if you need some more information. I will check back at 9:00PM Central when I get off work.

This is the exact same problem i am experiencing, wired pc, into router that also provides the wireless connection for my iphone. I get no device popping up in itunes when trying to add a library in remote.
I have added the port forwards to my router with no joy, disabled any and all software firewall/av, no joy.
Its quite frustrating as i can get to my laptop's library just fine (laptop is wireless), i've even tried at work and can get over wireless via an access point onto the network and my pc there is wired in.
I can only guess it is my router doing something stupid, or because it is running as a gateway and router, or something.
Any other info would be great

  • Lightroom 3 and tethered support...

I work with many professionals on a daily basis and more and more find they like Lightroom.  The workflow is smooth and intuitive and the features are useful and effective.   The most common complaint however, is the lack of direct tethered support.  Reading John Nack's forums some time ago it was noted that the 'Import' feature was an effective workflow.  I couldn't disagree more and many many pro shooters fault Adobe for not being able to use the app in a studio environment.  Are we finally going to see direct tethered support in Adobe Lightroom 3?  Workarounds and plugins are less than ideal.

Well, what exactly would you be willing to pay for this functionality? Now, take it for granted that simply clicking a mouse button to fire the camera and make a capture ain;t enough...I shoot with a Phase One 6x4.5 camera and a Phase One P65+ back. Just clicking the shutter doesn't interest me all that much. I want to be able to set the F stop and shutter speed as well as ISO on the camera. It would also be nice to be able to adjust the user preferences for custom functions and be able to set up and fire a whole series of either HDR brackets or a series of focus brackets...
Is this the sort of functionality your pro would expect/want?
Then you are in for a world of hurt...
The system level support for thee functions are a big investment of engineering support per camera. Exactly which cameras would you expect this sort of support for? Pro level cameras? Mid-level cameras? ALL cameras? Camera Raw/Lightroom support over 230 cameras at this stage (more cameras added each version).
Do you expect this professional level support to be free? What would you pay for this? What would the pros you work with it be willing to pay? Did I mention this would be a massive engineering effort? What features in Lightroom 3 would you be willing to give up to get this sort of hardware support in Lightroom?
Just asking cause what you are asking for has some pretty massive ramifications...

  • I'm angry about my upgrade options, so I need some help --

So I just sold my Canon HV30's (HDV) and purchased a Canon T3i DSLR.  I have found my system very lacking when it comes to editing the footage captured from the T3i in PPro CS5.  HDV was fine, but I'm in a world of hurt now.  With the playback resolution set to 1/4 and no effects applied, I can just about get it to playback in real time.  So, I intended to just throw a whole crap ton of RAM at the problem and see what happens.  Found out my Dell is A) Limited to DDR2 for no good reason, so no DDR3 love for me, and B) capped at 8 GB total RAM.
So my question is, with cash in short supply, what upgrade is going to give me the most tangible benefit to real time playback while editing T3i footage (I am not as concerned with rendering times, but it is always nice to boost that as well).  The options are:
    1. Go to the max 8 GB of RAM
    2. Get a CUDA video card to support Mercury Playback
    3. Get an intermediate codec such as Cinneform NeoScene
    4. A reasonably sized SSD for the OS and Application data
The downside of option #1 is that the RAM is a waste when I buy a new i7 system in a year or so.  With option 2, I can re-use the video card in the new system when that time comes, so little is wasted.  Plus I like to game, so that's a double bonus with the right card.  I cannot afford to do all 4, or even 2/4.  So I'm looking for the single one that will benefit me the most right now in smoothing out my editing.
    My current system --
    Dell XPS 420
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 Ghz
    4 GB DDR2 PC2-6400 RAM
    Nvidia 8800 GT
2x500 GB WD HDD, no RAID (though RAID supported)
    Thanks in advance.

As Bill and Harm stated, any upgrade to that system would be a waste of money at this point. And although your GeForce 8800 GT is technically a CUDA GPU, the card that you have simply does not have enough VRAM to even enable MPE's GPU-accelerated mode (most 8800 GTs had only 512MB of VRAM). This is because the MPE GPU mode requires a minimum of 765MB of free, unused VRAM (and no, a 768MB card will not enable the GPU mode because Windows itself eats up a few MB of that 768MB of VRAM).
There are at least three problems with your system: the CPU, RAM and the fact that the system is a consumer Dell (which allows absolutely no overclocking of the CPU at all whatsoever) to begin with. Plus, IIRC that XPS 420 uses the old Intel P35 chipset from way back in 2006, which is only PCI-e 1.x compliant (newer systems have PCI-e 2.0 slots). All of those conspire to effectively limit your system's editing resolution to 720x480p videos maximum. And even HDV editing performance is marginal on that system (it is "easier" to edit than DVCPRO 50 on a lesser system only because the resolution of HDV is only 1440x1080 compared to the 1920x1080 resolution of DVCPRO 50).
So in other words, don't waste your money on any upgrades until you earn enough money to purchase an entirely new system.

  • Boot device not found, hard disk not exist.... does that mean my computer is dead?

Suspecting that Im in a world of hurt here. I tried turning on my computer and it says "boot device not found" - run in test failed... when I hit F4 and run a hard disk test it says "hard disk not exist". The memory test passes, but under the boot device not found it says in blue "please install an operating system on your hard disk"... and to make matters worse it's making some funny noises when it tries to boot.
Is there any hope at all that this computer will work again? Is there any chance that any of the things I had on my hard disk can be recovered?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    You're very welcome, Jonathan.
dv5 still isn't enough info for me to provide the service manual (in case there are differerent ones for the different dv5 models).
However here is the link to the service manual I randomly pulled.
    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01550108/c01550108.pdf
Assume it is safe to say all dv5 models come with SATA notebook drives.
So, if you want to spring for $15, you can get this enclosure which apparently has very good reviews.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182138
From what you are describing (noise and stuff), I would say you don't have much of a chance to recover data but that is up to you if you want to try the enclosure or not.
    Here is what I recommend:
Yank the hard drive, and power on the notebook.
If the odd noise you heard is gone, then you can pretty much safely assume the drive was the cause, and that replacing the drive, and reinstalling the operating system will solve the issue.
If the noise is still there, then there could be another issue, and it might be risky throwing good money after bad.
