Shldr2thewheel's --- You gave me some helpful information about buying more memory and a faster hard-drive. I took your advice and bought more memory and a new and faster hard-drive from the website you posted a link to. MACSALES.com I recieved my items yesterday and I am getting ready to install them, is there anything that I should know before I do this. On the Macsales web site they have instructions and videos installing new memory and hard-drives and I've watched them but just wanted to know if you had anything to add before I attempt doing this. Like I said before I dont know much about computers and I'm just learning as I go and I've never done anything like this before. I really didnt know what I was buying and I never wanted to get the message START UP DISK ALMOST FULL OR NOT ABLE TO INSTALL A PROGRAM, so I got 16 GB of new memory and the 120GB OWC MERCURY EXTREME PRO 3 G SSD DRIVE. I'm not sure but I dont think I have any problems once I get this installed right??
When this is all installed does that mean anything that was saved on this computer will be gone. Do I have to move everything important to an external hard-drive. I would think so but what do I have to do.
One last thing I cant see a credit card statement because it says MISSING PLUG-INS
I have ADOBE 10.12 and thats what it says I need to view these statements?? I have the boxes checked in Preferences ENABLE PLUG INS....ENABLE JAVA.....ENABLE JAVA SCRIPT
What else do I have to do.

Can't help you with the pluggins. But I download my statements to my computers and view them off line.
As to replacing the memory and hard drive. If you have a fairly new Mac then screws used on the hard drvie are a T6 Torque bit type, not phillips. So it would be a good idea to get a but like that before you start your upgrades.
You meed to remove the screws on the side of the original drive and put them on the new drive for it to fit properly in the computer.
Other then that CLONE your original disk to a external drive using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

Also...I've tried some apps out, but they're audio plugins, which I have no idea how to use. Any help with that?

iMac from late Dec. in 2006 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hadn't thought to check this before (got GB but never use it) but yes, it seems to handle AU VI's and FX just fine. You get a VI slot for Midi tracks, plus 2 FX slots for both Midi/VI (GB or AU) and audio tracks. It even handles Melodyne Bridge perfectly on audio tracks. Don't think it accepts VSTs though.
Fun prog, and very quick to use, if you're just jotting down ideas, I'd only really looked at it because a friend wanted to 'score' an iPhoto slide show - the ease of use and compatibility with iPhoto (and iMovie I'd guess) is really very impressive.

Im looking for a way to add more information to the song tags.

Im not sure where to add the information im looking for. As an example i recently got the new smashing pumpkins 5 disc set. When ripped if shows which songs are from discs 1-5 and seperates them. Whats missing is the information corresponding to the fact that each of the 5 discs actually has its own disc name and not just disc number. is there a way to include this so it shows songs listed as Artist/album/album name/track name? For example, Smashing Pumpkins / Mellon Collie Deluxe Editon / Dawn to Dusk / Track name? I would just hate to lose this information to time in my library, and when a friend asks what disc its on i can just say its disc name. Thank you.

Looking For A Bag Of Some Sort

I have a ibook 12" but have no real good way of transporting it. I need some kind of cover that offers protection as well as alowes some extra space for other things, for instance during traveling and school stuff.

Apple's Store offers various cases but I don't think they have tons of bags. If you do a Google search for "laptop backpack" you'll probably get a bunch of hits. My favorite site is Ebags as they have a ton of variety and constantly offer discounts, as well as excellent customer service and great returns policy. They also have a section dedicated to laptop bags and cases. I wound up buying a bag called Skooba from Roadwired through them at a discount and am very pleased with the protection for my iBook and capacity to carry other school related and personal items.

Second scenario: Our organization firewalls have ids Snort based capable of sending syslog alert or SQL log alert, we would like to have ability to inform some how the nap/nps server with violating IP and have it VLAN isolated.
Third Scenario: unknown device attached to socket wall conf room or somewhere else will be isolated Most of network equipment are based on HP Procurve 2910al ,2920 ,1900
My question to you NPS experts is possible with given above scenarios?

EMac looking for wireless hook up, some confusion

I have an eMac 700 with a bus of 100. So I have to use the original airport card. Pricey. Apple mentioned using a 3rd party wireless card. Could this be it ?

Dana,No software upgrade is going to help yet and Airport Extreme (802.11g - 54MBps) doesn't work in the eMac 700.
You either need the Airport 'original' (802.11b - 11MBps) or a USB1 WiFi adaptor. The card you named is a 'PCI' card. The eMac does have a PCI expansion slot (even though you may see it listed in Apple System Profiler!).
The 'original' Apple Airport card are getting expensive as Apple don't sell them anymore so they are going for silly prices!
You need a USB WiFi adaptor like this. Software should be included.
(The eMac 700 only has USB1 so you can't use the USB2 based 802.11g adaptors out there)
Once you have this you can connect to your wireless network.

Request for UI improvments and some more

Hello Raptor Development Team,
Your product is really good, but there are some obvious UI lacks and some possible improvements (sorry, if these lacks/improvements have been pointed before):
1. There shall be possibility to search a text of a function/procedure/package/... without switching into Edit mode.
2. In SQL*Worksheet by parse error no info is provided in which position in the statement - line, column - error has occurred (even SQL*Plus provides similar info). As far as I can remember it is limitation of error-processing of Oracle JDBC thin driver, but it can quite easily be overcome but re-parsing the same failed statement inside PL/SQL block by means of DBMS_SQL package which provides such info (and it is relatively cheap, as statement has anyway failed on parse).
3. In SQL*Worksheet it should be possible to obtain all properties of an object under cursor by means of hotkey/popup menu (likewise the functionality of F4 button in TOAD) and not only by separate "describe" command (which, anyway, provide quite limited info).
4. Navigation in the left explorer-like panel is quite cumbersome, especially when working with schemas with big amount of objects. It would be nice, if alternative interface (e.g. tabbed a-la TOAD) will be provided. The problem may be alleviated as well by providing in the left panel speedbars that allows to quickly switch between different connections and between DB object types (tables, views, procedures,...) in the same connection.
5. If named bind variable is used in SQL*Worksheet and single statement is executed the "Enter bind value:" dialog box is shown for each bind variable as many times as it occurs in the statement (with empty "Object Value" field and "Object type reset to Varchar2 each time). Looks strange and inconvenient as it provide no clue for which occurrence of the variable value is asked.
6. If the same statement with bind variable(s) is re-executed many times or several statements that refer to same bind variable are sequentially executed in "single-statement" mode that it would be really nice if values will be retained between executions and prompted in "Object Value" field of "Enter bind value:" dialog box.
7. The following PL/SQL block fails

1. Has been mentioned before - we do have a bug on it. To search across all your pl/sql, there is a report you can use.
2. We are working on improving errors but I can't make any promises.
3. We have heard this before but it won't be there for v1.0. You can use the Connections navigator to access the details of the objects that are accessible to you while you have a Worksheet open. You can even drag your Worksheet tab down to place it under the Connections details tab so you can see them both at the same time.
4. In a post-v1.0 release, we will be looking at additional, alternate navigation.
5. We have an open bug to not prompt you for the same bind more than once.
6. I will talk to the Worksheet developer about this one. Not sure we can remember the binds from execution to execution but it would be a great enhancement.
7. Not sure why this is failing - I will check into it.

Looking for a way to add more signatures

I'm creating a form that has a standard orginator and approver signature blocks. Is there a button or another way to add additional approver signature blocks if needed? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Catherine -
Depends on the type of signature block you are looking to add. If a secured digital signature, then those do not allow you to add in dynamically from what I see. If the signature block is just a holding spot for an ink signature then you could put in code to duplicate a subform that contains the signature block.
A work around for a digital signature is to create several signature blocks and make them hidden until a check box is selected, or something along those lines.
If ink signature blocks then put your signature block objects in a subform, call it "SigBlock" for example. Make sure the form is setup as dynamic, and set the subforms as flowed to avoid overwirting any info underneath. You could place a button that states something like "Click to add signature" and put this code under the CLICK event:

If digital signatures then you'll want to embed Positioned subforms inside flowed subforms so that all materials flow, but the actual digital signature is in a fixed location. Be sure to set your FILE - FORM PROPERTIES - DEFAULTS to "Manually" on scripting and check the box titled "Enforce Strict Scoping". Then setup all your digital signature blocks, and when all formatted properly you could add in some hidden checkboxes that are set to CALCULATED, and have code under those that check status of a user checkbox to add signatures. If != 1, then the calculated field could tell the form to hide the signature block. If == 1 then the block unhides. Inside that block can be another user selected checkbox to add another signature, another hidden calculate field, etc. I would do this instead of setting up hidden properties in the form INITIALIZE setting since you may not want to hid those blocks everytime the form is loaded.
A tad complicated, but it works!

Looking for 7200 RPM HD with more than 500 Gig capacity

My MacBook Pro's 500G internal drive is nearly full. I want to upgrade to something larger (640G would be fine) but I would like to not step down to 7200 RPM. Does anyone have any recommendations. I have been looking around for one but can't find one.
I wish Seagate would release a 640G version of its Momentus XT 7200RPM - I would snap that up. Any chance that will happen soon.

While it's more than the 500GB Momentus XT if you really want the speed of an SSD and the capacity of a SATA drive it's a much more worthwhile investment to go this strategy. The drawback, however, is you lose your optical drive. It's just another option.

Looking for volunteers to write application comparison articles

There are a number of "what's the best?", "easiest to configure", and "lightest", questions that come up frequently in the forums: Image viewer, PDF/document viewer, tiling window manager, floating window manager, desktop environment, text editor, IDE, web browser, terminal emulator, ETC. And while there's very good documentation on some of the individual pieces in the wiki, there isn't as much on comparisons between them.
In order to help keep the forums from an endless cycle of repetition, we're looking for volunteers to add some application comparison articles to the wiki. The entries don't need to be comprehensive on individual programs, and there should be every attempt made to not unnecessarily duplicate what's already been written. Basic information on things like keyboard friendliness, lightness, text and/or graphic mode, and the like is encouraged though.

How do I make itunes look for my media files on the external hardrive

I've moved as far as I can tell all my music, videos etc. to an external drive but even though I've set itunes to look for it there in edit-preferences-advanced it still won't go there. In my list everything has the exclamation next to it and when I try to "get info" it says the original can't be found and I have to "find" it. I obviously can't do that for thousands of songs. I just updated the software on both my ipod and itunes and still nothing. I also reset my ipod and it still won't pick it up. My media files are under I:\My Music\iTunes Music\iTunes Music
Any ideas?

As implied above, iTunes struggles if you move the content around by hand. Changing the location under Edit > Preferences > Advanced tells iTunes where to put new content, not where to look for the old stuff. That said, if you move the library files and the media at the same time, keeping the relative paths from the library to the media unchanged then iTunes usually manages to work everything out.
If you copied the iTunes folder over already, then the steps above should sort you out. If not it might be time to get your library sorted out propery.
The path you mention, I:\My Music\iTunes Music\iTunes Music, looks like it has one too many levels and is the older name for the media folder. Ideally you want your library files at the root of the drive, e.g. I:\iTunes and the media folder inside that at I:\iTunes\iTunes Media. Again, ideally, your folder structure should look like the one on the right in this detatil copied from one of my older posts:
If you have upgraded from version 8 (or earlier) to iTunes 9 (or later) at some point, then your media folder (everything inside the red outline) may still be called iTunes Music instead of iTunes Media. The extra Music folder inside the media folder is used if you have allowed iTunes to Upgrade to iTunes Media Organization (iTunes 9) or used File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (iTunes 10). Depending on your choices for Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library plus a little bug in which one build changed the name of the file storing the choice of layout it is quite easy for some of your files to be organized according to one layout and some the other.
If everything is set out like that then iTunes should be able to find things by itself, but if it needs a hand my script FindTracks should be able to relink any files that iTunes can't locate.

Looking for SQL Solution to Very Unique Problem

New here, thanks. I have what I think is an interesting problem. I really don't want to post it because the background and explanation is rather lengthy. It has to do with one table that holds some general info; there is a unique numeric primary key. Associated with this table are three different tables identical in structure, having only two fields: the primary key, and a code. The three tables correspond to test results performed by a different individual. For each entry in the main table, where there is one and only one entry for the primary key, the same test could have been performed one, two, or three times. So there could be one, two, or three different sets of codes describing the test results. Only one set of the test result codes is the correct one. And there is a hierarchy that determines which is the correct set of codes. Say the main table is called LR. LR is linked to three different tables, each of which has the exact same structure. The relationship between LR and each of these three tables is one to many. Call the three tables that hold test results SCR, QC, and PT. Some assumptions can be made. In the table LR there are two flag fields: Q_STATUS and P_STATUS whose values each are either Y or N. If P_STATUS=Y, then we are guaranteed a set of test result codes in the table PT, and this set of codes is always the final word; always the correct results. If P_STATUS=N but Q_STATUS=Y, then we are guaranteed to have a set of test result codes in the table QC, and if this is the case, then this set of codes is the final word. Now if P_STATUS=N and Q_STATUS=N, then we know there is a set of test result codes in the SCR table, we know there is one and only one set of test result codes, hence this set is the correct one. Another assumption that can be made, for any row in the LR table, there will ALWAYS be at least one set of test result codes in the SCR table. There may or may not be a set of test result codes in the QC and PT tables, and the flags in the LR table indicate if either is the case. Hope this makes sense so far. For many years I have been trying to figure out one SQL statement that will return the correct set of test result codes. Often I have to analyze data that relies on the results of a test (e.g. how many tests had the code 850 in the year 2011?). That's a simple example, but you get the idea. Since I have to determine which set of test result codes is the correct one to use, I've always had to rely on writing a PL/SQL procedure anytime I have to work with test result codes. I tend to use a conditional: IF (P_STATUS=Y) THEN /*the right answer is in the table PT*/ ELSIF (Q_STATUS=Y) THEN /*the right answer is in the table QC*/ ELSE /*the right answer is in the table SCR*/. I have a document with a little more detail, and an example. Or maybe this makes absolute sense to someone out there and they know exactly what to tell me! And let me say this is not a critical issue for me. I've been searching for this SQL statement for about 10 years now. I consider myself pretty proficient with SQL, but definitely not a guru. I'm thinking the solution I'm looking for might rely one some kind of full outer join on all three of the tables SCR, QC, and PT and then if those results could be linked to the LR table, and then maybe in the SQL statement use of DECODE might do it. I want one SQL statement that will return me the correct set of testing result codes. Hope this all makes sense. To anyone who has read it I thank you very much. I would be very happy to provide my document with further explanation and an example. Any response is greatly appreciated. Guess I have to keep coming back here now to see if anyone responded. Oh, I might add that we use a very old version of Oracle (8.0.3) but, if all goes according to plan, we should migrate to the most current version within the next year.

Why do I keep three tables. Each sample that is evaluated is always screened by what I will call a "tech." Every so many cases the test must be repeated for quality control. If the findings of the initial testing or of a quality control test are found to contain abnormal results, then the test must also be repeated, this time looked at by a doctor. So I have what I refer to as the "main" table; the one that holds final data, which in my example I explained the two "flag" fields that indicate if the test was repeated. Every time a test is evaluated it is done by the same person, and the findings of an individual testing, or screening, are a set of test result codes. There is the "main" control table which I have called LR in my example. The reason I have the other three tables: one is used to store the test results of the initial screening (always done); one is used to hold the test results of a quality control case (may or may not be done); and one is used to hold the test results of an abnormal case that was screened by a doctor (may or may not be done). There is a separate table for each individual who may have done a screening.
Let us consider the results of just one case. In the table LR we have something like this:

By default, for any entry in the LR table there is always a set of codes in the SCR table. We know a quality control was performed because QC_STATUS=Y, and we know it was screened by a doctor because P_STATUS=Y. So we would have three different sets of findings, each in one of the three tables:

And if P_STATUS=N and Q_STATUS=N then I would want {014, 13R, 150, 160}
Of all of the sets of test results codes, only ONE is ever the final word (i.e. the right answer).
So what I was trying to do is find a query that would give me what I want. And my apologies if there is a major design flaw. I always thought it was not that bad. But then I am no SQL guru either.

What is the Firefox start page looking for when it tells me I'm not using the most current version and need to update Firefox? The check for updates button says my version is up to date, but the start page disagrees. Is there a setting I need to adjust?

Okay: My start page is the one Google provides: http://www.google.ca/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official and frequently it has a note underneath the search box that "You're not on the latest version of Firefox. Upgrade today to get the best of the Web!" But when I check for updates on the About Firefox window, it says my Firefox is up to date. So what is the start page looking for? Is there some setting I need to adjust? Or is this a Google marketing ploy to get me to switch to Chrome?

I tentatively think I have the solution; this is for when the session id value 'thing', in about:config, referred to in other answers is already on the default/rest state.
I am assuming, I don't what to imply certainty in-case there is a value wrong in our browsers, that the problem stems from the fact that our homepage is no longer the default for Firefox.
So, go to 'Options'>'General' and delete the homepage. This will reset it to the new address, which is 'about:home'.
I hope this helps some people.
