I'm still using Snow Leopard because heard too many horror stories about upgrading to Lion. But I can't upgrade Safari unless I upgrade OS. Is Mavericks any better than Lion?

I'm still using Snow Leopard OS because I heard too many horror stories about people upgrading their OS to Lion.  But I can't upgrade Safari anymore unless I upgrade the OS. I get messages constantly telling me I need to upgrade my web browser, and have increasing problems correctly viewing pages (like L.A. TImes, NY TImes) because Safari needs upgrading.
I can't really tell what the advantages are to upgrade to OS Mavericks or OS Yosemite because it seems most are intended for mobile apps, and I only use my desktop.
My last upgrade to SNow Leopard wiped out 2/3 of my iPhoto collection. No idea why and no fix. Macs used to be the epitome of compatibility for upgrades — not anymore.
What are my options? What issues would I encounter if I upgrade OS to Mavericks or to Yosemite? WHat are likely problems, advantages and disadvantages?
Thanks for any help sent my way.

If you do want to upgrade.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

So, here's the thing I just upgraded to Mac OS X Mavericks from SL but since upgrading my mac shuts off immediately by itself so I use it in safe boot. When I was running SL I didn't backup my stuff because I had external hdd, but I just bought one and I want revert back to snow leopard. How do I go back to snow leopard while also taking all my saved stuff even though I didn't backup it back then when I using SL?

    PROBLEM
    =========
After upgrading to maverick 10.9.2 my camera stopped working on my iMac and on my MacBookPro.
First I suspected that it was the maverick upgrade, which was the problem.
After spending several days with searching on the internet and trying all the different suggestions.
Which included re-format hard disk, re-install Maverick again, safe boot, removing old *.kext files, repair disk, check disk with permissions etc. etc. (waste of time)
I phoned apple support, but supporter said that it was a non apple App which caused the problem.
Then I say somebody saying that the AirDisplay was the problem.
    SOLUTION
    ==========
    I finally found out that:
By uninstalling the AirDisplay solved the problem, and now the camera works again.
Here is the link  how to uninstall AirDisplay:

    ==============
When do Avatron have a fix for this particular problem. No update was available today when I tried.
Are Avatron working on the problem?
A lot of people have this problem with AirDisplay and Maverick Update 10.9.2 !!!!!

  • I went to back up my Mac on the same Seagate Free Agent I've been using for a year, but I got a message "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."  I'm still using Snow Leopard like I've always been.  What is going on, and how do I fix it?

I went to back up on the Seagate Free Agent I've been using for almost a year.  I got the message, "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer."  What do I do now?  How can I fix it?

10.7.4 is not Snow Leopard.    10.7.4 is Lion.
Also, is the drive connected via USB or Firewire?
If USB are there other devices on the USB bus?
Are you using Time Machine, Superduper, Carbon Copy Cloner, or another software?.

  • Can I use Snow Leopard?

I have an iMac G5 (1.8 GHz PowerPC G5), currently running OS v 10.5.8. From what I've read in these forums, this model is not Intel-based. Does that mean I can't use Snow Leopard? I'm not especially tech-savvy, and don't know geek-speak, so I'd appreciate simple answers! Thanks for any advice you may have.

10.5 is still receiving security updates, and that will run on your G5.
Considering Apple hasn't sold G5s since 2006, I'd think that's fairly good for a machine that is already out of AppleCare coverage, even if AppleCare was purchased. As long as your machine does what you need, you should have no reason not to run it. There is a large market for used and refurbished machines, that frequently can do things newer machines can not.
For instance your G5 can run Classic if 10.4.11 or earlier is installed on it.
Your G5 can run PowerPC games that have specific graphic drivers only found on your G5. And there are some older versions of Photoshop best optimized for G5s that don't run as well on Intel Macs. There are also some people who run Macs that are twenty or more years old, because it does what they need. So don't feel bad being left out of the Snow Leopard path.

  • Has Apple stopped supporting email on iCloud using Snow Leopard?

Has Apple stopped supporting email on iCloud using Snow Leopard?
As of Friday, 27 Apr 12, I have been unable to load me.com email onto my computer although I can still bring in my other account (sbc), but I am only able to view my me.com email using the icloud web site. It loads ok on my iPhone, and I had an appointment @ an Apple store and all my email came in ok while in the store. I migrated to iCloud last year, but I'm still running Snow Leopard because of the incompatibility issues of Lion and other software, specifically Quicken.
    Any ideas?

    ds store wrote:
Sorry, I'm trying a new OS (not Apple) and having a issue which I went back to edit my post and then the window closed.
Maybe you should re-think that strategy.
I don't know, perhaps Apple found out about Roger's trick and is now banning 10.6 users from iCloud.
iClould still provides standard IMAP and SMTP services: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
IMO, just use a web based email like Gmail or Hushmail, that way any device anywhere that has a web broswer can get it.
But if you use Apple Mail, then you can access your mail wether you have internet or not.

  • How to extract Subtitles from DVD using Snow Leopard?

    Hey there,
this may be off-topic, but I don't know where to ask. Anyone know how I can extract Subtitltes and create an .srt File from a Movie DVD using Snow Leopard?

I too have been looking diligently for something I can use to glean .srt files from DVD's.  Secondarily, .sub/.idx files.  I didn't quite realize how much software would be made useless by my shift to Lion.  Amazing amounts!
Is there any other product, commercial or otherwise that is known to accomplish this task?
If one is found, please update the discussion here!  Thanks.

    Get Leopard.
    System Requirements
Apple ID (required for some features)

Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.5.8 or later

I have to downgrade from Yosemite to Snow Leopard because of compatibility issues with some of my software.  Can I use PS Elements 12 with snow leopard?

PSE12 became a 64 bit app for the first time on Mac. The recommended system requirements are Mac OS X v10.7 through v10.8.
Are you not able to use lion or Mountain Lion?

Mail application is still there. All of my emails and folders are gone since iCloud. How can I get them back using Snow Leopard? Or can I? Do I have to wait for Mountain Lion?

I need to check a few other things...
Click on 'Mail' in the upper left corner next to the Apple ()
    Click Preferences
    Click the 'Accounts' tab
Make sure your iCloud account is highlighted in the column on the left.
In the account information section what does it say next to:
    Incoming Mail Server?
    Outgoing Mail Server?
Also, did you use MobileMe before the iCloud?

I currently use Snow Leopard with Microsoft Word, Excel and Entourage on my iMac.  If I upgrade to Mavericks, can I still use those applications?

If the Microsoft Office is 2004 then no.
    Mavericks System requirements.

Note I would recommend a minimum of 4GB RAM.
You need to check all you software and hardware including any peripherlas you use, printers etc that they are compatible with Mavericks.
Any software that is PPC and uses Rossetta will not work with any OS X verson later than 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
If you decide to upgrade have a tested backup of your current system in case of problems and you could return the computer to its previous configuration.

  • Print to PDF - using Snow Leopard (Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose

i have a PDF form that i created that is used as a custom proposal that my company sends out to potential clients. the form in its editable state is only used internally. we recently upgraded to snow leopard, but prior to the upgrade, we were able to fill the custom proposal form out using adobe reader, and, as you well know, we weren't able to save that edited document as a PDF with the custom form fields filled out. our work around using adobe reader was to print to a pdf using the adobe pdf printer in the printer dialog. with the addition of snow leopard, however, instead of choosing the adobe pdf printer, we were to choose PDF from the bottom left corner, then Save As PDF, and it would spit out an uneditable pdf that then allowed us to email it to the potential client without them being able to edit it as well as have an internal, digital copy for our records instead of having lots of paper floating around (i know this is also doable using security that disallows the client certain editing privileges, but printing to a pdf is much quicker and more efficient, and the pdf security isn't really that secure at its best).
in any case, i came across this gem of a post here on the support forums that installs another option from the PDF drop down on the bottom left of the print dialog menu that reads Save As Adobe PDF and is supposed to do exactly what i am trying to get it to do...print to a pdf file from adobe reader.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html
once i updated to acrobat 9.2 (as the link above suggests 9.1), however, the Save As Adobe PDF does appear in the print dialog menu, but it still gives me the same error that acrobat 8 - 9 gave me while using Snow Leopard — Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose File > Save — and as i've already explained, you can't save an edited pdf form in reader (as i am the only one in the office with acrobat) and still keep the fields as you've entered them in. the only work around is to print to a pdf but is apparently having some recent problems.
using acrobat, however, i know that i can save the editable pdf as a new file with the fields customized as i have left them, but it still saves it as an editable pdf and the print to a pdf option still remains the best option...that way we have digital copies internally that are uneditable that can be printed at any time or emailed to the client.
how can i do print to a pdf, based on what i've written above, using snow leopard and acrobat and reader?

A simple way is to flatten the form fields, which converts the field appearances to regular page contents. You can do this with JavaScript or PDF Optimizer (Advanced > PDF Optimizer > Discard Objects > Flatten form fields). A very nice script that adds a custom menu item can be found here: http://www.uvsar.com/projects/acrobat/flattener/

  • Will the new MBP still run Snow Leopard?

I am considering buying a new MBP, but I need to know if it will run SL?  Does anybody know?

The Early 2011 MacBook Pro being sold can still run Snow Leopard, I have such a machine here.
There is no hardware/driver difference as yet, perhaps not for long. Apple is keeping it's downgrade options open for now.
Just c boot off the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard install disk, use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the whole drive (deletes the Lion Recovery Partition) and install.
Make sure to make bootable copies of the Snow Leopard install disk
    http://www.walterjessen.com/make-a-bootable-backup-snow-leopard-install-disc/
As you know, the Retail Disks of OS X don't contain the free iLife that comes with new Mac's (in the past on the grey disks or now on MAS)
I don't care much for Lion, less than stellar GUI's can be had for a lot less in hardware costs.

  • If I use iCloud on my iPad, will it change my MobileMe functions like iWeb on my iMac? My iMac uses Snow Leopard.

If I use iCloud on my iPad, will it change my MobileMe functions on my iMac which uses Snow Leopard. In other words will it disable functions like iWeb on my iMac?

As a follow-up . . . I downloaded and installed Virtual Box, purchased a legal issue of Windows XP (not easy since Microsoft doesn't sell it anymore), installed it, installed Quicken 2009 in "the Box" and then the problems began. Trying to migrate my Quicken data files from my laptop PC to the Virtual Box Quicken program turned out to be the most frustrating thing I've been through for quite awhile. Error after error without any explanation of what I was doing wrong (or not doing) kept me scratching my head and re-reading the VB manual for nearly two days. Today I finally had success and all three of my Quicken accounts are comfortably residing in my iMac and working perfectly (so far . . . knock, knock).
It was well worth the effort because now all I need to do is open VB (about 3 seconds), click open Windows (about 5 seconds) and open Quicken ( <5 more seconds) and I'm ready to go to work.
    Thanks for the advice typod360 . . . it's much apprecoiated.

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well.
