I'm taking the plunge.
I graduated high school last week, and for my graduation present, my mother's friend decided to contribute an astounding $2000 toward the purchase of a new Mac. See, I've been on a PC for a long time now, and graphic designing on Windows wasn't entirely condusive.
I've used Macs before. I took a Multimedia class that used what I believe were the G4 PowerMacs along with Final Cut Pro. I'm writing this post on a 700MHz G4 iMac my girlfriend let me borrow. She herself has a 20" Intel iMac, stock.
However, with the support from my mom's friend, as well as an extra $600 from other presents, I'm finally ready for one of my own. And I couldn't be more happy. I've been reading up on it for the past few days, tracking my order since I placed it on the 26th, and eagerly anticipating the iMac/iPod combo i've placed an order for.
The iMac's going to be 20", 500GB HDD, and 1.0GHz of RAM. Everything else is stock.
I did have a few questions though about the shipping part of the process.
First, why does the shipping for my AppleCare Protection Plan already fall under the Completed category? Does that just indicate that they've processed it, and it's ready to ship with my iMac?
Second, the Estimated Shipping Time on my iMac was today/yesterday (since it's after midnight). Not trying to be too impatient, but with the upgrades stated above, how long would the lead time generally take if I made the order about four days ago?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for the life story. I'm just excited for the Mac, and these forums seem really excellent in terms of population.
~Joseph
-edit: Ouch. They just updated the shipping info on the iMac. Says it won't ship until July 6th, and it won't be delivered until July 13th. Hopefully these figures will drop a little and I can get it a bit sooner. Maybe I am impatient.. >_>
20" iMac Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.6)
AppleCare: When it sais completed it means it was processed, you will receive a seperate package by postal mail probably about one week after you get your computer containing the AppleCare information (Proof of Insurance, etc along with a diagnostic CD)
Shipping: I had the same thing happen to my replacement iMac, it was estimated to ship on July 8th, midnight came and went and i was followed by an email the next morning saying estimated shipped was pushed back to July 14th (making the estimated delivery date the 16th).
Naturally I freaked out, and called Apple. The support person told me that the date they specify in the e-mail is a worst case scenario and it will definately ship by that date, and that it could even ship much sooner. So I was like it could even ship out today? and she sais it's possible.
Turned out later that day my iMac shipped, so I wouldn't worry too much. So it shipped on the 9th even though their email said the 14th.
Congrats on graduating by the way, nice present

Taking the plunge - external drive and exclamation points
Okay...
I have cried for help on this forum before about the somewhat common problem of iTunes 7 having a strange relationship with music on my external drive. The drive in question is a Lacie 250 GB Firewire drive.
A few months ago, out of the blue, one day I opened iTunes to find a sea of exclamation points. Though all the music I had added after a particular date was there, most of the music I had added prior to that was tagged with the exclamation. When I'd try to play one of these songs, iTunes would say it could not be found, though I could manually locate it and things would work fine. I tried a few fixes recommended on this forum by well-meaning but misguided people that resulted in a few sets of duplicate playlists but no fix to the problem. Then, one day, out of the blue again...it started working fine.
I don't even recall having restarted the computer. iTunes had just fixed the problem somehow.
Well, now the problem is back, and I've dealt with it for about a month. But I'm not convinced that it will just go away this time. So, even if I destroy my painstakingly cultivated hundreds of playlists, ratings, play history and comprehensive information (artwork, composer, etc.), I am determined to fix this problem without manually locating over 10,000 songs.
I am posting my attempts here as a record that will hopefully help those struggling with this problem in the future. Though I would welcome any and all comments or questions, I have frankly come to expect very little assistance or even the willingness to assist from this forum (that is to say, I imagine my unresolved question will languish for awhile as a monologue until I either fix the problem or die).
The first thing I will do (after doing a final backup, of course) is to determine whether it makes a difference if an updated version of my iTunes library file and .xml are in the Music folder (on my hard drive) or in my Musica folder (on the external drive). The latest edition of the file is currently on the external drive.
So, here we go...
Grant
Dual 1GHz G4, 1G RAM, 80G HD Mac OS X (10.4.9) iPod (1st Gen), iPod Shuffle (1st Gen), iPod Mini, External HDWell, I've made quite a mess of things. So I have 14,000 songs. Most were added years ago. Looking at the date added in correlation with the exclamation points, it seems as though iTunes forgot the location of most of the songs added before 5/9/06. Mind you, iTunes worked fine (with the exception of doing this whole thing once before) until about a month ago. So, in May 2007, iTunes forgot most of what happened before 5/9/06.
(For reference purposes, the gap seems to exist between two songs I downloaded. "Help Me, Ronda" by the Beach Boys is the last song with an exclamation point in the date added list (see two exceptions below). "Proud Mary" by Ike & Tina Turner, on the other hand, is exclamation point free and only a couple of songs added after "Proud Mary" have exclamation points. They are:
Freedom, by Richie Havens, added 6/3/06.
Slow Free Bird, by Geesekey, added 12/17/06, a song I made in Garageband.
Now, don't let me give you the impression that there is a solid wall of exclamation points up to "Help Me, Rhonda." Maybe about every 10/20 songs, there is a song with no exclamation point that plays fine. Following Jase's lead before (his advice to another user), I have investigated some of these songs that work fine, but can't find any reason why these work and others don't (any difference in the iTunes Library.xml, files created with/without track number, etc.).
So, here's what happened in the past couple of days: I dragged my "iTunes Music" folder (located in my "Musica" folder on the external drive) into the iTunes source list). Most everything was duplicated, with the new songs playing just fine but lacking ratings and play history. Also, the new songs were not included on any playlists.
What I did next was poorly executed. I sorted iTunes by the Date Added and selected the first few thousand (roughly, A-J; seeing them according to the Date Added reveal that they weren't added in exactly a linear fashion). I hit the delete button and selected "Remove", but I then told iTunes to "Move to Trash." What I should have done, I imagine, is told iTunes to "Keep Files". So, my A-J songs are now deleted off the External Drive and gone (though I have backup DVDs generated by the iTunes "Back up to Disc" feature).
What should I do next? is the pressing question. Should I rip everything out and start from scratch with my backup discs? I guess the question I would have with that approach is this: if I restore from backup discs made three months ago, will I still have all my playlists, ratings and play history as they were when I made the backup? If that's the case, that'd be fine with me...I just want to make sure that's what will happen. Also, I have a backup of my iTunes Library file before I've done all this crazy stuff of the past few days, so if that enters into the equation, let me know.
Otherwise, let me address your comments, Jase.
Anyway, here's a question. Can you export your
playlists, even though they're made up of songs with
exclamation marks? If so, you could try exporting one
of them as an XML file. Then import it--you'll
probably wind up with duplicates (playlists, not
songs). Does the newly imported playlist play, or
does it still have the exclamation mark problem? I
wouldn't know what to expect, but it might be worth a
try.
My playlists themselves are all still the same as they were (though there are exclamation marks all over the place). From what I can tell, they look fine when exported to an .xml (the music folder seems to have the correct path). When I import it, it's the same deal: exclamation points at the same places.
If your playlists are exportable, you might want to
export them to XML files, just so you'll have those
little databases of them. Then, if worse came to
worse and you had to give up on your current Library
file and reload your Music folder into a new library,
at least there's a chance you could import your
playlists and not have to build them again from
scratch (assuming nothing has changed in terms of the
organization of your Music folder).
I'm not willing to export every playlist, because I have hundreds and it would just take too long. Is there a way to export all or a lot of playlists at once? Anyway, I figured that my playlist data was stored somehow in the iTunes Library file, so I felt I had a backup already. I could be wrong about this, though, as I really don't understand much about the iTunes Library file and .xml and the like.
Can you drag songs that have exclamation marks into a
playlist? Somehow, I doubt it. But if you can, you
could use new playlists to make a record of some
information that you might want to save if you had to
start all over again with a new Library.
Believe it or not, I can add songs with an exclamation point into playlists and they're added just fine (though, they still have the exclamation point). How this works is: I can't drag and drop them into a playlist. However, I can control-click and select "Add to Playlist" and it works. There's another mystery for you.
Have you looked at your iTunes Library.xml file --
specifically at the location information for
individual songs -- to see if the location
information exactly matches the information you see
in the Finder? I have found mismatches when
investigating some exclamation marked files. I didn't
know how that happened, and I didn't know what to
about it, but it was intriguing to see evidence of
some iTunes mischief.
Is the iTunes feature to start music file names with
the track number turned on? To my mind, fewer missing
song file problems occur when this is on.
Yes and yes. Based on what you told others, I have looked at the .xml of some of the problem songs and the working ones and could find no difference, but I didn't really know what I was supposed to be looking for. I also use the Add Track Number feature and always have.
If you still have the 28,000 songs in your Library
and want to go back to the 14,000, you could sort all
your songs by Date Added and delete the ones you
added on June 21. Or, if you saved a copy of your
iTunes Library file before you dragged your iTunes
Music folder into the library, you could just throw
out the more recent Library file and reinstitute the
back-up copy.
I probably should have done the latter (just restore the backup of the iTunes Library file). Oh well...
Some advice for future experiments. Try them with a
small sample if possible unless you're absolutely
sure they will work the way you want them to. For
example, drag one album in your Music folder into
iTunes rather than the whole Music folder.
This is a great idea. I wish I would have checked my sample more closely or done more tests before I plunged off the cliff.
Back up your iTunes Library file, as well as your
Music folder. (You might already do this.)
Check.
Those are a few things to think about. They probably
will not be helpful. Like I said, I don't think there
are clear answers to this problem. The best I can
wish for you is that iTunes will magically fix the
problem, like it did once before. Then, maybe there
are some preventive measures you can take.
Since iTunes did fix it once before, I would not
throw your current iTunes Library file away, no
matter what. If you decide to start a new library so
that you can actually listen to your music, rename
this Library file and keep it around, since it has a
lot of your metadata in it. You can try it every now
and then and see if iTunes spontaneously revives it.
Okay, I will post what I do next, provided that I don't hear any compelling advice and make my own decision (though I should be even more gun-shy after my recent blunders).

Tiger to Snow Leopard -taking the plunge
Hi, I was wondering if I can have some advice re uprgrading my Dual Core iMac 17in, please?
I'm still running 10.4.10 -with very good reason ... I have a full version of Photoshop 7, Flash MX, and ProTools with Mbox 2 hardware which are essential (and which I can't really afford to replace at this time -ProTools at least is non upgradable). So firstly is there a way of partitioning Tiger for these apps so that I can still use this hardware/software when needed?
And secondly, I rely heavily on iMovie, iPhoto, iWeb, and of course Mail. Will I be able to import any existing data into the new iWork/iLife suites, or will it be unreadable (of course I have the jpgs and .mov files backed up as raw data too).
Thanks for any help.First, update to 10.4.11. Then, get an ext FWHD, format and partition it into two pieces, use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, and put a backup/clone of that onto both partitions. Boot with these backup/clones and ensure they work exactly like the original. Then, erase and reformat the int HD into two pieces and restore one backup/clone to each partition. Buy Snow Leopard and install it onto one of those int HD partitions. Set it up to do what you want and then update one of those clones on the ext HD. As for the iApps, I don't use them, so can't provide any help.

Well, I've finally done it... ordered a video ( digital I guess you'd call it ) underwater camera.... or at least waterproof until your ears pop.
anyone have any hints or suggestions how to make the most of this...speak up !
eg. shots you've taken in pools, at beaches, on boats, in thunderstroms, etc ??
This fairly new camera ( olympus TG-1 ) is something totally new to me, as I've never shot any digital stuff ( except the red tests I did a while ago ).
My mousey computer had a tough time dealing with red raw ( winxp and cs3 )...so I had to use redcineX to convert to SD. But this camera... maybe I will have to use cineform or something...??
My plan is to make a vampire movie...or a zombie movie...
I'm hoping I can get someone to star in it for a reasonable amount of $$...
My first choice would be Colin..if he is anywhere near MN. For example, if he can make THIS FACE while wearing vampire teeth, UNDERWATER.... HE'S HIRED !
Hope you are well, Colin, and I often think of you.
It's amazing that my first digital camera , a powershot S10 ( which cost like $800 at B&H on 9th Ave. and was worth about 25 cents a month later ) was way less capable than this new Olympus camera that you can use while drinking all the coors lite in town...cause if you drop it, nothing bad happens.Crocodile Dundee, eh? I saw that, plus at least one of the sequels, but did not recall such a shot? Maybe I need to revisit that film. As I recall, it was rather fun, though I seem to remember the sequal (set in NYC?) was less so.
Maybe it was Greg Norman, reaching into the water hazard, when the croc struck? Do not recall him having tattoos, but perhaps Chris Evert can verify that?
If your actress does not already have a "tramp stamp" at the small of her back, perhaps you can use one of those temporary tattoos, and have something like a pentagram in the center - that could establish her link to the occult, hence why the vampire golfer chooses her.
You could then do a tangent on "devil-worshipping golfers," who sell their souls for better scores, only to have to finally "pay up," when Little Nicky shows up, just before the "club championship."
Let's see, the soundtrack could start with Ry Cooder's theme from Southern Comfort, and then go to Charlie Daniels' The Devil Went Down to Georgia.
Now, playing Art Director, I see a logistical problem. I see the golf course in the Deep South, with plenty of Spanish moss in the oaks, and maybe even some cypress trees at the edge of the water hazard. The "clubhouse" is an old, antebellum plantation house, and a Civil War battle was fought on what is now the golf course. Of course, there WERE slaves, and dead soldiers involved. No one in the plantation was happy, all of the way, up to the "master," who missed the cut in the 1863 British Open Championship...
Now, I have not figured out where Ollie, the "vampire eel" got HIS start, Maybe a first cousin to the Loch Ness Monster, but from Transylvania (Corund - Praid - Sovata)?
OK, there ARE some continuity issues, but nothing that we cannot work through.

Took the plunge today!!!
After much consideration, I finally took the plunge and got an iPhone today, and now I'm wondering what took me so long! I was on a S**t family plan and painlessly transferred to an AT&T plan. Porting my number over was SURPRISINGLY and blazingly fast, taking less than an hour! It's always taken much longer in the past whenever I switched providers. I'm simply amazed. Everything seems to be working perfectly. I wish the Apple BT headset came with instructions though. It took me a while to figure out how to power it on and pair it, but I got it. Bye bye S**t, hellooooooooooooooooo iPhone!
I don't know what to make of the headset just yet. I had one for the old phone, but didn't use it often because it tended to literally hand on my ear and look more like a digital tumor than something useful. The Apple headset has no moving parts other than the switch, and it's just one earpiece rather than a pair. It doesn't fit my ear very well, but I think a sponge cover over the earphone will fix that. I will play with it over the next few days.

Re Time Machine
I have an external hard drive with files I backed up manually over the past 2 years 1TB of memory.
I am finally taking the leap to use Time machine to back everything.
will I have to reformat that drive, thus wiping my previous back ups?
can I split it the drive in two partitions?
Also
as I have two separate Macbook Pro's- one older than the other.
OSX 10.68
the other is
OSX 10.75
can I back them up separately?
or even synch and merge files and folders etc? between the two?You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up. -

Hi.
Is there a way in Captivate 5 to prevent someone from clicking on the quiz to take it, without having gone through the content?
CB.Hi.
Regarding preventing someone from taking the quiz without going through the content...
I decided to separate the quiz out of the project as a separate item.
We are going to use a Learning Management System which will house the module to control the access.
The LMS can be set to not allow people to click on the Quiz link, until they have gone through the content. (So they cannot by-pass the content and just do the quiz).
I was trying to find a way to control this from within Captivate 5 and keep people from being able to click on the quiz without going through the content. (And keep the quiz inside the original project).
However, this LMS solution will work for this module.
Thanks everyone!

My ipod nano 5th gen. won't play movies or tv shows but it plays them on itunes. When I click on it the screen flashes black. I have tried taking the videos off my ipod and then putting them back on but it still won't work. what should i do?
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Why is it, every time I click send e-mail for instructions on resetting my security questions, I don't get them? I just want to play minecraft. I already put $15 in my balance and I can't even spend it. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Either they're being sent to a different email address, or got caught in a spam filter, or something's wrong at Apple's end. If you can't find the email, you need to ask Apple to reset your security questions, which can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.

The Informatica maps are not taking the parameters from dac
Hi All,
The Informatica maps are not taking the parameters from dac. We have tried setting the parameters at DAC level, task level. The parameter file is getting generated by DAC and has correct values as we expect. But when we run a full load from DAC, the initial date in Informatica is being taken as 1/1/1753. Do we need to specify the parameter file name at workflow level?
Is there any setting that we are missing. Please guide us and let us know the steps we should take to make sure that the parameters that we set at DAC level get passed to the Informatica maps. Also mention this is happening only with dates and other parameters like data source num , soruce and target database information is getting passed to Informatica maps.
The version of Informatica as 7.4.1 and dac version AN 328, Build date Aug 8 2007.
Please Help me in this issue.
Thanks in advance for all members.Hi Ananth.v
Try to make sure that your parameter file's path in Infa is in-sync with the path of DAC files being generated.
The date you are getting seems strange - which are your Source/Target DB platforms?
In general take a look at [this thread| http://forums.oracle.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=3405906#3405906] , it may make some thing clearer for you.
Hope it helps,

im trying to connect my ipad to my connection at home and its taking the password but still wont connect and doesnt tell me why?? .i even tried to reset network settings
Try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, my guess is that it's a router issue. You'll need to get administrative access to the router and determine if it has a firewall. If one is present, turn it off and test the iPad. If that solves the problem, don't leave it that way. Turn the firewall back on but weaken it a notch and test again. Repeat as required.
For what it's worth, a router firewall can stop iPad communication without affecting computer communication. I do not understand why the difference.
Edit...
I just saw the post from Diavonex. An off/on is certainly worth a shot. Leave it off for ten seconds.

Hi, I'm a runner who bought a fifth generation ipod (mainly for running) in late 2005. I am interested in the Nike+iPod system but was disappointed to learn it is only compatible with iPod nano, though many nanos use OS 10.3, like the fifth gen. ipod
