I made a text nav bar using CSS, and I am trying to get downdown menu's from it?

Hello,
I am working through a tutorial book and just created a text navbar with CSS, which I have never done before. Basically it was an Unordered list and then I used the float property right to make them go next to each other. Then created a few more styles to give them padding etc.
I thought I could go after each list item and now add a group of unordered lists items to pop up when I mouse over., but whatever I try in a new CSS style doesn't work to put them underneath.
Here is the code  and the style sheet code thus far, and I have colored in blue, the items I wanted to have dropdown menu's come from. Can anyone help me or guide me to where I might find this info? I want to get to the next level, but this is as far as the book goes.
thanks!

Perhaps it would be helpful for you to view the page source code of this page

As you can see, the submenu code links are immediately below the top level code, and are
wrapped in their own  <UL> </UL> tag pairs.
Hope that helps

  • How do I create a horizontal nav-bar with CSS, set to an exact width?

    I have a problem that I need help with. All I need to do is
    to create a simple text-based horizontal navigation bar using CSS.
    I have seen many CSS tutorials online about how to make a
    horizontal navigation bar using unordered lists, but they all seem
    to either set the bar to be centred or to the full width of the
    page, or if they do set it to be a certain width, then the buttons
    within that width are centred within pre-defined widths for each
    one.
    Unfortunately none of these help me - let me explain my
    scenario...
    I have an area that is exactly 700px wide. In this area I
    want to put 5 text hyperlinks.
    I want the first text-link to be aligned to the left of my
    700px width, and I want the last text-link to be aligned to the
    right of the 700px width.
    I want the spaces between each of these text-links to all be
    the same.
    The only definite known width is the overall 700px. I will
    not know the width of each text-link, as (a) they are all live
    text, and (b) the phrases for each could change.
    I have mocked up a quick diagram showing in more detail
    precisely what I mean:

    Can anyone please help me with this?
    Thanks.

    > Wrong, wrong, silly comment and wrong.
    >
    > To elaborate: firstly, with regards to design,
    everything can be done, it's
    >simply a matter of how.
    Only in your fantasy. In practice there are always some
    limits enforced
    by the used material or technology. You simply can't violate
    such basic
    rules and laws, even if you would like to.
    >Whether you use text, images, tables, CSS, or even
    >Flash, the objective is first to design the site with
    both your client's and
    >their customers needs and expectations, and then to build
    it, regardless of how
    >difficult-to-code that design may or may not be.
    It always looks good on paper, but not every design can be
    turned into
    practice. This not only applies to web design, but to almost
    every kind
    of development. Often enough you have to find compromises or
    workarounds
    if the engineers say "won't work". The problem is that many
    designers
    don't understand this or don't want to. They're just thinking
    and living
    in their perfect theoretical world, but have no idea of how
    things work
    in the real world. And many theoretical things simply don't
    work there.
    Each medium has its own rules and laws. Some things may work
    well for a
    printed paper for example, but not in the Web and vice versa.
    Of course
    you can try to break these rules, but you'll definitely fail.
    >You should not compromise your
    >design because of a lack of coding knowledge.
    It's not lack if coding knowledge if you refuse to try things
    that are
    impossible or don't make sense. It's quite the opposite,
    because you
    don't have to waste your time with something that won't work
    at all.
    >If you don't know how to do it
    >yourself, then find out how to do it (which is what I was
    *originally* trying
    >to do here, remember?).
    Quite easy. Surf the web, and if you see something like what
    you want,
    just have a look at the source code or post the URL here. If
    it can be
    done, then it already has been done. Just show us an example
    and we'll
    happily explain it to you.
    > Secondly, no, a client does NOT have to accept that
    "some things simply can't
    >be done or don't make any sense in the Web".
    Sure they have. The client is not always king. And if they
    insist on
    stupid things and always know it better - why the hell are
    they hiring
    you instead of doing it themselves? If they want their work
    to be done
    by an expert, they should also _listen_ to that expert and
    let him do
    his work properly instead of telling him how he should do it.
    That's not
    going to work.
    >Like I said earlier, some clients
    >are not interested in hearing about how what they want
    cannot be done, and any
    >attempts to tell them so only serve to convince them to
    take their work, and
    >their money, to someone else. Most clients, thankfully,
    are adaptable and
    >willing to reason. However, some are not, and if these
    clients take their money
    >elsewhere, you lose the job and you don't get paid. It's
    that simple.
    Let's say you want a little film to be made about whatever.
    Would you
    tell the director where he should position the cameras, the
    lights and
    all the stuff? He already knows _what_ you want to get, so
    why don't you
    just let him decide _how_ to do it? It's his job! And if he
    says that
    filming directly towards bright sunlight usually doesn't work
    well, you
    should respect his expert opinion.

    to make enemies. I am
    >here to get help with a coding problem. When people offer
    "alternative advice"
    >that hinders my progress in finding a solution, I tell
    them so. I give back
    >what I get.
    You asked for advice and you got proper answers. We really
    don't need
    people here just looking for the answers they want to hear.
    Often enough
    people are coming here looking for a cure to a particular
    problem, while
    it would be much easier to avoid that problem right from the
    beginning.
    Of course if they don't want to hear such alternatives -
    their problem.
    > Secondly, I was not aware that "regulars" to this site
    had any special
    >"insult-free privileges" or suchlike that newcomers did
    not.
    It's not the best idea to bite the hand that feeds you. It's
    the group's
    regulars who answer almost all of the questions here. And
    most of them
    also know how to use a killfile.
    >I don't care if
    >someone is a regular or a newcomer - when I ask a
    technical question and
    >instead of either potential advice or even silence, I
    instead receive
    >un-warranted "design advice", I'll make my opinions
    known.
    So do we. If someone wants something that's not possible or
    not going to
    work, we'll "make our opinions known". After all that's what
    a free
    discussion board/forum/group is for.
    > As for the "just leave" suggestion for supposedly
    "insulting regulars", I
    >could very well say the exact same thing to you, for the
    reason of not actually

    > Please either propose a solution to my original CSS
    problem or just leave.
    > There, how was that?
    Want to try again?
    With pure CSS and text links it can't be done within the
    given
    constraints. I even doubt that it's possible with a table. So
    either
    drop the fixed 700px width or the equal space between the
    buttons.
    > P.S: Seeing as though pedantry seems to be something
    you're interested in,
    >judging by the "rant" tag comment, I thought I'd point
    out that you spelled
    >Santa Clause wrong.
    You can keep the 'e'. In German we have more than enough of
    them.
    And if you would be familiar with web design, then you would
    have known
    where this ironic "error message" came from.
    Your turn.

  • Organising text into columns using CSS?

    Hello again guys,
    Another day another problem.
    This community has been really friendly and helpful so far with what I'm sure must appear to many of you to be really simply problems, so I'm hoping that you can bear with me and help me out again!
    Basically, I'm designing my page using CSS, and I've come to a part where I would like to have 3 columns of text, of a fixed width, with a fixed gap in between. Using my very limited knowledge and experience, I inputted the code that I thought would work, but whenever I go to enter more text, it doesn't jump to a new line when it reaches the maximum width of the column, it carries on on the same line and pushes the rest of the text across.
    How do I sort this out?
    I can't actually upload my site until Monday, but I've included some screen below which I hope will help.
    Thanks again guys.
    Text in columns:
    http://i51.tinypic.com/2s9vyhg.png
    When I type some more, it doesn't stay in the column width:
    http://i55.tinypic.com/dlno7b.png
    The code that I thought would work:
    http://i54.tinypic.com/yjoed.png
    http://i56.tinypic.com/2dax46c.png

    Hi Murray,
    Apologies. I had made a mistake. I've got it working now. Thank you.
    Another tiny thing, if you check out this screen:
    http://i54.tinypic.com/elcep.png
    you can see that the line starts right near the top, and goes all the way down to the bottom.
    Is there some way to amend the code that you gave me to adjust the height of the line? I tried adjusting the size of the image but that didn't seem to have an effect?
    Ideally, I would like to line at the top of the 'T' of 'This is a news story', and finish at the bottom of the 'M' of 'More'. That height.
    Something else which has confused me. I have that 'More' link aligned to the right, and in my design view in DW it is so aligned, but then when I preview the page, it jumps to the left hand side of each column. The alignment seems to disappear when the page is 'live'?
    Thanks again for all of your help. You really are a star!

  • Using CSS and Javascript to display a div with flash in it, mozilla reloads the flash file!

    I am using CSS and Javascript to display a div with an
    embedded flash object in it. Mozilla Firefox reloads the flash file

    unexpected functionality, my expectation would be that the flash
    file would not change it's state at all, and would remain in
    whatever state it was left in.)
    I was wondering if anyone has come across this issue and is
    there something I can do to prevent this from occurring?
    To be more specific, I have a single HTML page with 8 flash
    files embedded in it (yeah I know, it's a bit much). I am then
    using CSS and Javascript to display (via a numbered link (with an
    id)) an equivalent numbered div tag containing the flash file.
    Mozilla Firefox reloads the flash object that is in the div.
    Internet Explorer will not do this and will instead, load the flash
    object only upon initial view of the flash object. All subsequent
    links (in IE) will NOT reload the flash object on the page. I'm
    guessing this is some kind of difference in the flash player as an
    Active X object and the plugin, or is it just IE being clever? Or
    am I way off?
    Anyway, here is the code...

  • Using the paste options randomly misses out text, don't use it and use the 'Paste Special...' option instead (MS Outlook)

    Also there seems to be no obvious way to report Office bugs.  This is leaving little room for improvement.  Not sure if there has been any planning on this front???
    For example, [MS Outlook] using the paste options randomly misses out text, (don't use it and use the 'Paste Special...' option instead).  But how do I communicate this to the Office team without knowing at least one of the team personally (which I
    don't)???

    Hi,
    Do you have this issue when pasting in other programs?
    If you are pasting something into Outlook, some formats and images may get lost, especially when you choose the Paste Options as Keep Text Only.
    Once you have this issue again, please try with "Keep Source Formatting". This may keep the Sour Formatting and you may not get the text lost.
    If you have any feedback when using our products, I suggest you press Ctrl + Alt + 7 or Ctrl + Alt + 8 to submit it. Microsoft will always listen to users' voice and make the products better and easier to use.

  • I have created a Fireworks nav bar with drop down menus. Can't get the weblinks to save.

    I have been trying to add the web addresses in my Fireworks nav bar drop down menus. I can't get them to "take". I add the address, click done and some of them save and some don't. I am pulling my hair out! HELP!

    the easiest way is constructing your menu with frame labels
    now i have no way of knowing how you are constructing it ..so
    this may not work for you ...i assume that you have created a main
    button ...that has been converted into a symbol & then
    duplicated to create all other buttons
    okay here it goes ..i hope i dont confuse you
    i will explain how to create 1 button with 4 submenu items
    with the trems that i mentioned above
    but iam not going to explain all the details of creating a
    whole nav bar
    because it just takes too much typing ...i assume you already
    know this
    sooo ! ...lets say this is the Portfoio button ...inside the
    symbol now
    create 8 layers ...the order is going from top to bottom
    actions
    labels
    submenu Logos
    submenu Illustration
    submenu Animation
    submenu Coolstuff ."you will name your button items how you
    like" ...
    main button....lets just say Portfolio !
    invisible btn for main button
    so now on with the hard stuff
    create 20 frames ...stop action on frame 1 ...frame 9
    ...frame 20
    on the labels layer now ....name frame1 "Closed" ...frame 10
    "Open"
    on the submenu Logos layer ...create a keyframe on frame 10
    all frames before the 10th frame will be blank frames
    repeat that for the rest of the submenu items
    on the main button layer you will just place the main
    Portfolio button on frame 1
    & on the invisible button layer ..the inv btn is going to
    be placed on frame 10
    all this is iam hoping your have converted everything into1
    symbol
    all you need to do know is attach code to the main Portfolio
    button & the invisible button
    so click on the Portfolio button
    on (rollOver) {
    gotoAndStop("open");
    invisible button
    on (rollOver){
    gotoAndPlay("closed");
    & that should be good ...very simple !
    then just repeat this process for every button that makes up
    your nav bar ....& it doesn't matter if your inv buttons
    overlap each other or your main nav buttons are touching each other
    peace John

    You'll get a faster, more effective response to your questions by including as much relevant information as possible upfront. This should include:
    <li>Full APEX version
    <li>Full DB/version/edition/host OS
    <li>Web server architecture (EPG, OHS or APEX listener/host OS)
    <li>Browser(s) and version(s) used
    <li>Theme
    <li>Template(s)
    <li>Region/item type(s)
    With APEX we're fortunate to have a great resource in apex.oracle.com where we can reproduce and share problems. Reproducing things there is the best way to troubleshoot most issues, especially those relating to layout and visual formatting. If you expect a detailed answer then it's appropriate for you to take on a significant part of the effort by getting as far as possible with an example of the problem on apex.oracle.com before asking for assistance with specific issues, which we can then see at first hand.
    Thanks for posting the complete code, it makes it so much easier to understand the problem, but always post code wrapped in tags<tt>\...\</tt> tags to preserve formatting and special characters.

    when others then

    Commits should be issued by end user/client software on completion of a transaction. This means <tt>commit;</tt> should almost never appear in PL/SQL code. The main exception to this is in <tt>dbms_job/secheduler</tt> scheduled processes that have no client or UI. If this code is executed from APEX, then APEX issues more than enough commits anyway.

    Could it be that you are using your account on more than 10 devices? Or that more than 10 devices are still connected to your account?

  • Placing rollover nav buttons using CSS

    Hi. I'm creating my first website using DW CS3 and I'm having
    problems working out how to include all of the graphics as part of
    the CSS so that I can use different CSSs for different devices.
    I have a set of images I'm using for the navigation buttons
    and I want to add them to table cells using CSS with tags for
    placement but how do I then get the rollover effect without ading
    anything to the actual html code?
    any help gratefully appreciated.
    Thanks.

    If you need to do this then here is an example:
    www.taste-in.com
    The buttons are show/hide with css.
    .rollover {display: block;height: 100%;}
    .rollover img {width: 100%;height: 100%;border: 0;}
    .rollover:hover { visibility: visible; }
    .rollover:hover img { visibility: hidden; }
    #home, #contact, #taste, #about, #tasting, #terms{height:
    92px;}#home {width: 139px;background:
    url(../images/nav/hover/home.jpg);}
    #taste {background: url(../images/nav/hover/taste.jpg);width:
    129px;}
    #about {background: url(../images/nav/hover/about.jpg);width:
    128px;}
    #tasting {background:
    url(../images/nav/hover/tasting.jpg);width: 126px;}
    #terms {background: url(../images/nav/hover/terms.jpg);width:
    128px;}
    #contact {background:
    url(../images/nav/hover/contact.jpg);width: 140px;}--

  • Help with Nav Bar using Action Script 3

    I am a flash NOOB to say the least.  Trying to teach myself.  Thank God for YouTube! LOL!  Anyway, I have build a Nav Bar for a site that has a sliding bar on the bottom of it that follows the mouse.  The problem with this nav bar is that when you change pages inside the site, the slider resets back to position X/Y = 0 and you really don't know what page you are on for sure without me having to identify each page in the page body itself.
    Does anyone know of a way using action script to have the URL of the page sent to flash and in turn use that URL to set the X and Y position of the slider to the appropriate X and Y of the button on the Nav Bar for the page the user is on?
    I have heard of using flash.external.ExternalInterface but now for sure how this really works nor if I can assign it to a variable for reference inside the action script.
    Any help would be appreciated greatly!!

    The Flash Nav Bar is at the top of each page.  But yes, when you click a button inside the flash nav bar it takes you away from your current page and loads a new one.  I am trying to tell the swf file which page it is on so I can set the X and Y position of the slider.
    You will have to excuse me if I am so noob that I loose any of your replies to this as just as Flash is new to me, so is the lingo.
    Thank you for your help.  I will research FlashVar but if you have any other ideas then I am open to them.

  • Graphical navigation bar using css

    I am trying to create a navigation bar for a page I am
    designing. Unfortunately, I am new to HTML and CSS and the little
    code I do know is not working for me in this regard. I found a
    tutorial that basically fakes an unordered list and turns it into
    graphical blocks The end result, however, is (1) not centered, and
    (2) messes with the layout. I want to contain the navigation bar
    within the nav_bar div. In a way it is, but with the navigation bar
    present, the div the encloses it moves down the page. Any
    suggestions?

    Inside code view, place the curser where you want the menu.
    Select the spry tab, and choose the fourth button from the
    right. It should be right under the Data button. Then select the
    horizontal menu from the pop up menu.
    Next hover over the new menu and click the blue spry menu tab
    that shows up. The properties menu will allow you to edit what is
    in the menu. If you do not need the drop down children, select them
    and click the "-" above it.
    With the menu item selected in the properties menu, on the
    right side you can name each one and also give it a link, title,
    and target.
    Then play with the css file that dreamweaver generated for
    you and you are in business. One safty thing, make a copy of the
    css file as a back up. So if anything does happen, you do not have
    to start all over. Also if you print out the css code, you can get
    an idea of what everything is doing by reading the comments.

  • Creating nav bars using layers

    I am trying to create a nav bar on the left hand side of a web page.
    I have created it how GoLive CS2 seems to suggest, so each option that will appear in the nav bar has been created as a seperate layer. I have positioned these correctly, then added actions to each of these so things will happen when the user mouse clicks on an option.
    It has 5 main links in at the top level and each of these have sub-sections. At the moment when the user clicks one of these options the sub sections appear beneath it and the other options that were previously in the way slide down to allow these sub-sections to appear.
    The issue is when these sub-sections need to open out into sub-sub-sections. I have succesfully worked out how to get these to ShowHide on a mouse click but I cannot, for the life of me, work out how to make the options below it to then slide further down to accomodate the appearance of these sub-sub-sections, despite managing to make it happen for the sub-sections.
    Perhaps because they have already slid down already and now cannot do it again? Surely not?!
    Anyways, I hope that is all clear. If no-one replies I shall assume not and try a a re-post.
    I would be grateful of some help.
    Thanks!
    Simon

    ok, I have put the nav bar up at this address http://www.simonpeel.co.uk/leftnav/leftnav.html
    Obviously, 'View Source' to see the code.
    To re-create another problem I would like a solution to, do this:
    Click 'Come & See' and then click 'Sunday'. Then click 'Welcome' and then re-click 'Come & See' and you will see it does not revert back to the original state but keeps the spaces where the sub-sub-sections are. I may be able to work this problem out myself but I lost patience and thought if someone was going to look at it anyway, you could save me some hassle!
    Many thanks in anticipation,
    Simon
    p.s. feel free to take a look at my site by deleting
    /leftnav/leftnav.html! I'm quite proud of it, although there are some dead links lurking around.

  • Nav bars rollover stops working when there is a drop down menu

    I am making a navigation bar bar that has about 5 links on it
    all with rollovers. Their is one rollover that uses a drop down
    menu. That rollover doesn't give me a rollover just a drop down. I
    want to have both happen.
    Also does anyone know how to keep the rollover in the down
    state? I want to make it easy for the user to know where they are
    in the site by just glancing at the nav bar.

    Add a swap image behavior to the button you want to rollover.

    Remove the normal state button image from the linked in page.

  • How to use CSS and images in a plsql-dbms_output reports?

    Hi.
    Windows 2000 SP4
    SQL Developer 1.2.1.32.13
    Java 1.5.0_07
    Oracle 9.2.0.6
    I'm trying to create a plsql-dbms_output report with HTML that uses a stylesheet (CSS) and an image. These seem to be ignored by the report viewer.
    The following example works fine in Internet Explorer 6 but the stylesheet is ignored by the viewer and the viewer does not show the images (shows broken images instead). I've tried with various image types (PNG, GIF and JPEG).
    <!--
    begin
    dbms_output.put_line('<head><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="file://c:/temp/core.css"/></head><body>');
    dbms_output.put_line('<H1>This is Level-1 Heading</H1>');
    dbms_output.put_line('<H2>This is a Level-2 Heading</H2>');
    dbms_output.put_line('<p>This is regular paragraph text.</p>');
    dbms_output.put_line('<img src="file://c:/temp/fig01.png"><br>');
    dbms_output.put_line('<img src="file://c:/temp/fig01.gif"><br>');
    dbms_output.put_line('<img src="file://c:/temp/fig01.jpg"><br>');
    dbms_output.put_line('</body>');
    end;
    -->
    Is the HTML viewer limited to not support stylesheets and images?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

    It also seems that links don't work. The mouse cursor changes to a hand when hovering over links and the links are shown in blue and underlined but nothing happens when clicking on them.
