I need help setting up my Apple wireless network so that there are no conflicts with IP addresses for any of my devices.

I have 2 Airport Extreme Base Stations, 1 is a 5th generation 802.11n and 1 is a 2nd generation 802.11n.  I have 2 Extreme Express Base Stations which are 2nd generation 802.11a/n.  The idea is to create a network that works throughout my 2 story house and extend into the garage.  It's not a large house 1400 sq ft wood construction.  The internet feed comes into the Hughes Net modem upstairs.  This is where I want the main base station (5th generation). I eventually will connect a network drive and printer to it.  I then want to place the second base station in the room directly under the upstairs room where the main base station is and connect my desk top computer to it.  In the living room I will have one of the Express Base Stations connected to the Micro Cell and house stereo system.  In the garage (50' away from the living room Express Station & 75' from the Main Base Station) I will place the other Extreme Express Base Station to be connected to the garage stereo system.  All of this is with the idea to extend the range of my network for all my devices and airplay to my stereo systems.
Ok, so I have a lot of wireless devices. 2 2nd geneartion iPads, 2 iPhone 4s's, 3 Wi-Fi enabled Sony TVs, Apple TV (near the house stereo Extreme Express), AT&T Micro Cell connected to house stereo Extreme Express, Lorex Security DVR system (connected to main base station upstairs), Whole-House DTV Network system,1 Macintosh Quicksilver Desktop computer, 1 MacBook Pro, and 1 Mac AirBook.  As you can see I need a lot of DHCP IP addresses.
So, how do I go about setting this all up?  I have read countless articles and discussions but I still have conflicts.  It usually mostly, but not limited to, effects my wife's AirBook.  Not good at all!  I used to have a WDS setup but I understand that the 802.11n Airport Extreme's do not support this.  And when I try to distribute a range of IP addresses I run into problems.  So can someone please help me resolve this headache?

Configure the Extreme connected to the Hughes Net modem as your router. In other words in AirPort Utility, Network tab > Router Mode should be set to "DHCP and NAT". It will provide IP addresses to all the devices on your network.
All other AirPort devices on your network should be configured as bridges: Router Mode "Off".
You may want to configure static IP addresses for any equipment that is likely to be permanently installed. For them, there is no reason to have the Extreme issue an IP address, and they can keep the same one forever.
The Microcell may be able to connect to the Express's LAN port such devices that have to handle voice or other real time audio or video streaming are generally best installed using a strictly wired connection. The same applies to the Sony TV and AppleTV. Keep them on a wired LAN served by the Extreme, avoiding any reliance on a wireless link if at all possible.
The way to implement a complex network like yours is to add one device at a time. Ensure it connects reliably, then add another. You have a lot of work to do.
WDS can be implemented even with new Extremes but its performance is likely to be so unacceptable that it would be nothing more than an exercise in frustration for you.

I need help setting up an apple id for my son's phone. It seems his email address has been taken and/or we cant get the password.

    Two different things
    If you forgot the password
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
If the email ID you want to use is in use by someone else - then you may need a new one
The iCloud ID's are usually unique and may be of help if you set one up

  • HT4259 Q: Can I use an older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

Q: Can I use my older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, Are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

  • Need help setting up WRT54G as wireless bridge/repeater

I currently use a WRT54GS as a wireless router.  It is located downstairs and can't be moved.  I have a few devices upstairs that can't connect to the router because of a weak signal.  I can not run a cable upstairs and have a second WRT54G router that I'd like to use as a wireless access point.  Can I configure it to work as a wireless bridge or repeater?  If so, will the 4 LAN ports work in addition to the wireless ones?

No.  You cannot connect the two routers wirelessly, at least not with Linksys firmware.  Perhaps there is third party firmware that will convert the WRT54G to a wireless bridge, but this will void your Linksys warranty.
Another option is to add high gain antennas, such as the Linksys HGA7T, to your WRT54GS.   Also, try to align the router and wireless adapter antennas so that they are parallel to each other, but perpendicular to the line between them  -  this should maximize your signal.

  • Very new user needs help setting up a three user network plus server

    Hi,
I'm an owner/manager of a recruitment company in the UK and we use three mac minis in our office to run our recruitment software (on a filemaker database) internet, mail and MS Office 2008.
We currently use one of the mini's as a 'server' in so much that it has a external HDD attached and shared across the network. We use Airport Extreme to share the internet.
Although to begin with this set up has served us well the amount of data travelling across the network and the prospect of a couple of new employees starting has made me think it's time to invest in a network and server of some description.
With my very limited knowledge i'm proposing the following but would greatly appreciate some assistance from the forum users!
Install OSX 10.5.3 Server on one of the Mac Minis
Get an ethernet switch and cable the three minis together
Use the external HDD as a time machine backup and store all files on the 'server' HDD
Continue to use the Airport Extreme to share the internet over airport.
I have a couple of questions:
Can the Server computer still be used as a desktop or do we need to buy a new mini
Does this set up make the airport base station redundant
As we grow I would envisage enlisting the help of a specialist Mac IT support company but in the mean time any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you again in advance.

I would get something better specified than a mini to be my Mac OS X based server, and although you can run it as a desktop I wouldnt advise it.
You ought to go out and buy the book Mac OS X Server 10.5 Essentials - The only Apple-certified book on Mac OS X Server - which Ive found to be a godsend of a book in getting Leopard Server going. Make sure you get the 10.5 version. Im in the UK and got it from Foyles in London.
Your approach is fine, but Leopard Server isnt as plug and go as the rest of Apples products. In particular it just doesnt function correctly if you do not have working DNS before you start. Period. If you dont understand DNS in your office or If having read the book you find its too technical you might be better off buying a no-brand Network File Store/Disk or even a Time Capsule from Apple if its mainly shared disk space that you need.

  • Need help connecting to my home Wireless Network

I need help connecting my LaserJer M1212nf MFP to my home wirless network. I would like to use Apple's AirPrint, and be able to print from my iPad.
I've spent a few hours following the directions I found on the manuals through hp.com and I've had no luck. I've already unistalled and reinstalled the printer. I've also updated the firmware. If anyone can provide assistance I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

This is NOT a wireless printer (see product spec: http://www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/pdf/ce841a.pdf), you can NOT add the printer to the wireless network. This printer do support LAN connection, so if your wireless router has LAN ports, you can added it to your home network by connecting a network cable from the printer to a LAN port on the router. You need then reinstall the printer as a network printer, to use airprint.

  • Need help adding 2nd AExpress to wireless network

hey peeps, i'm adding my second AE to my system, which contains a Macbook, a wireless DSL modem and another AExpress which is wireless and is connected to a stereo. I am having trouble connecting the 2nd AE to the system. Everytime i try to configure it it asks me if i want to switch networks, which i don't want to do. When i do that i lose my connection. I need to tie the new AE in to my current system.

Ok, let's double-check the 2nd AX's configuration to join the wireless network provided by the 2wire.
Temporarily connect AX to your Mac Pro using an Ethernet cable, and then, using the AirPort Utility check the following:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing 2wire's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

how do I add another device on to my apple ID account so that I can download movies etc.. from my icloud to any of the 3 devices on the account?   I already have my iphone and ipad on the account and for some reason my 3rd device (apple TV) dropped off.   If you can help, greatly appreciated!!

    Hello there, HannaGriffin.
Since the Apple TV (1st Generation) is the only one that has storage, I would recommend the following Knowledge Base articles for troubleshooting issues with authorization:
Apple TV (1st generation) may not play content purchased from the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1359
    or
Apple TV (1st generation): Apple TV repeatedly asks for password to play iTunes Store rentals or purchases

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • I just created an iCloud email and I want to use that email for my iTunes account as well. I need help suiting the old apple I'd because I do not remember anything associated with that email and I don't know the security questions

I just created an iCloud email and I want to use that email for my iTunes account as well. I need help switching the old apple ID because I do not remember anything associated with that email and I don't know the security questions or the login for that old email.

You cannot do that.  The AppleID you used to create the iCloud account is an active primary email address.  The email address you created with the iCloud account is also an active primary email address (all Apple domain email address automatically become AppleIDs as well).  You cannot replace the primary email address on one active AppleID with the primary email address on another, active AppleID.
You can use your iCloud email/AppleID with iTunes, but it will be a separate account, so all your previous purchases remain tied to the other AppleID you have.
I don't understand your statement that you could not remeber your old AppleID password, as you would have had to use it to create the iCloud account in the first place (the first step of creating the iCloud account required you to login with your existing AppleID and password)?

  • Need Help Setting Up Wide Area Bonjour

    The subject says it all.
Please assume I am a newbie.
I need step by step procedure.
Do I need a registered domain?
Is there a web page with simple instructions.
I want to be able to share files with family across the web - so they can download full resolution photos etc. I want to host these locally as there are many photos and it is not practical to put them on a server.
I have tried setting up ftp on my computer and cannot access it from outside my LAN - previous question on this has not come up with any answers.
    Please help

I don't think there is an all encompassing single source or information for you to go to. There are too many variables and choices for any one solution.
Unless you have a static IP number from your ISP, your IP address will change on occasion. Your guests won't be able to find your machine without knowing what your IP number is. I get around this by using the service at dyndns.com. The service is free and you can get a domain name that doesn't change. You run a program on your machine that updates the ip number for your server automatically (there are a couple of consumer level routers that provide for this kind of service and you don't have to run a program on your computer).
You will need to have an FTP server program running. You can probably do it with the OS, but I never bothered to figure out how. I just use a program named Crushftp which is a standalone FTP server with a fairly simple setup and full controls over users and groups. Ben at CrushFTP has pretty good support and keeps his software up to date.
In addition, you will need to setup port forwarding in your router. Almost every router used in the home environment has a NAT firewall that blocks incoming connections on most ports. FTP uses port 21 TCP and the service or port must be forwarded to the Lan IP number of the machine that's hosting the FTP server.
There are several skills you will need to learn to make this all come together and work right. You will need to install a couple of programs, learn to setup your router, create user accounts and passwords on your FTP server, and then teach your users how to use an FTP client program like YummyFTP. The machine that runs the FTP server will need to be running 24/7 so that it can answer users when required.
Or, just use a hosting service for this kind of activity, like .Mac - give them the $100 a year, unload your pictures, build a couple of web pages that are based on their fairly simple templates, and get on with using your Mac. Using a solution like this means you only have to learn how to use one service, and you don't have to dedicate a machine for the task. You will still have to read their help menu's and understand the system, but you don't have to setup, maintain, and backup the server.

  • HOW TO?: Need help setting up 3 different iCloud accounts for my kids (so each has own iMessanger)using same Apple ID (mine) ....they don't have their own separate email addresses to work from...how do I do this?

Need help setting up 3 different iCloud accounts for my kids (so each has own iMessanger)using same Apple ID (mine) ....they don't have their own separate email addresses to work from...how do I do this?

Any devices connected to the same icloud account can sync all the data on that account.  For this reason an icloud account is really for a single user.
On a mac, if each user has their own account, then the itunes for that mac account should be set up to connect to that user's icloud account (System preferences>icloud).
