I need to reset my apple tv due it not working following system update. I cannot reset onscreen, so need to factory reset via iTunes. However, upon plugging into iTunes with the micro usb cable, iTunes is not picking it up. Any ideas pleas??
All that happens is the light on the front of the apple tv flashes rapidly. Itunes is not recognising the apple tv being plugged in, so I cannot attempt the factory reset. Help!
Welcome to the Apple community.
Have you made sure that you have removed all the cables other than the USB cable when connecting with Apple TV to iTunes. Also make sure that you have connected the Apple TV to a powered USB port.

HT5706 Is there a way around updating your Apple TV without the micro usb cable?
The light is just blinking at me and the tv shows a picture that I must need to connect to itunes.
Unfortunately, in that case, you will need the micro USB cable.

Why the micro usb cable doesn't come in the box
When I bought the apple tv the only this that came in the box was the power conector the remote and the apple tv, I been using my apple tv for month or maybe a year and never had a problem, but today when i wake up and tried to turn on the apple tv, it shows that i have to connect the micro usb to my computer to restore. So why when we by the product, if we need that cable why doesn't come with it?
it's one of the most common computer cables out there all smartphones but apples use them for sync and charging
all supermarkets sell them and it's only something you need if something goes very wrong
so it would make much more sense to include a hdmi cable -
I have tried reseting it through itunes ! But it does not recognise the apple tv and the itunes hasnt got any apple tv tabs? help
It is telling you to restore by connecting to iTunes. Did you follow the steps exactly?
Unplug all cables, then connect micro usb. Make sure to connect directly to the computer and not a leyboard port or USB hub.

Reset an Apple TV 3 but I don't have a micro usb cable right now. What to do?
So, I want to reset an Apple TV 3 but I don't have a micro usb cable right now. What to do?
I have mini USB cords but no micro USB cords. The instructions on the Apple website assume that the customer has a micro USB by stating, "Connect one end of the micro-USB cable to the back of your Apple TV, and the other end to one of your computer's USB ports." As a customer, I understand by the language used that I should have the micro USB included with the Apple TV. If we are to supply our own micro USB cables, a re-wording of the instructions would alleviate any misunderstandings. Apple should start out by writing, "You will need to obtain a micro USB cord separetely from the Apple TV."

At the end of a recent apple tv update, a picture appeared showing a connection - micro usb - to apple itunes. I don't have this micro connection. I now can't watch apple tv. what is going on?
Many newer cameras have the Micro USB cable you can use.
Otherwise, you will need to buy one to restore your Apple TV. -
Would someone give me a link or model number for the "micro USB cable" that specifically goes from the Apple TV 2/3 gen to a MacBook Pro 13 2012? Thanks!
You would want something like this.
Although you may well have one around the house, they are very popular for cameras, satellite navigation systems etc. -

After updating my Apple TV, there is only an icon on my TV screen, requesting me to connect to iTunes. But what do I do, if I don't have a micro USB cable. There HAS to be another way, since Apple TV is sold without this cable.

The same just happened to me and despite living in the US with plenty of stores to waste your time finding the right cable it is more than annoying that I need to buy a cable to finish an upgrade that did not suggest such a step in the beginning.
Tonight I am ******* mad about Apple.
This is just very bad product design
You only need the cable if something goes wrong with the update. Your update failed. Who knows why. Corrupted download, who knows. This procedure is the rescue so you don't have to take it in for repair.
For the record, my Apple TV 2 updated without issues, no cable needed. I found out long ago that restarting (rebooting) your Apple TV just before updating usually prevents such trouble. The Apple TV is a comuter just like and iPhone or iMac. -
HT4367 I don't think I have an open outlet for a micro USB cable on my apple tv
I understand that I need to connect a micro usb cable from my apple tv to my computer to restore, but i don't have an outlet on the back of my apple tv to do so. Am i missing something?

Take it to the nearest Apple Store, they'll be more than happy to restore it for you. If the nearest store isn't all that near, take it to a friends house that iTunes on their computer. -
My apple tv3, serial no. C07JWBZ9DRHN is not powering on. Connected with Computer, with micro USB cable with power on, it is not shown in Devices. How to rectify
You have to remove all cables before connecting to your computer with micro usb. Power is only connected when using a 3rd gen device and done after the initial connection.
