I started to back up my computer using Time Machine...

I'm trying to prevent losing my photos. (If someone could direct me to how to really check if I've lost my photos that would be helpful too) but in the meantime this is what has happened:
1. I "tried" to back up my computer (21.5 inch mac) with a brand new hard drive (2TB) two nights ago using Time Machine and the OS was Mavericks. (*I have never backed up using TIme Machine before so this is very new to me)
2. This backup "seemed" to have worked (it looked as though there were 2 of everything and I was not confident my photos were really there because I could not figure out how to navigate the Time Machine window and I would have liked to partition that hard drive but couldn't find where to do that either and that's another discussion )......, however the "encrypting" was taking forever and my computer was running SO SLOW (barely over half as of this morning) so I shut off Time Machine, quit and restarted the computer. I went to Apple Support and searched for Time Machine directions which I found, but were in video(Mac OS X: Time Machine Basics  Quicktime) format and was told I needed to install QT, really??
3. Since QT wasn't working I checked on software update and saw that there was one for OS and now I'm running on OS Yosemite
4. And with that I had to upgrade iPhoto
5. and when I try to open iphoto I get this message "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."
6. If I hit "upgrade" will everything be OK? I am 100% NOT confident in anything I am doing at this point.
7. After reading up on the QT problem, I tried opening the same page, Mac OS X: Time Machine Basics in Safari and it worked fine. Regardless of what I was doing, QT would not play the same video whilst using Chrome.
Please and thank you.

All you need to know to use TM is how to switch it on. Nothing else is adjustable.
You'll need an external drive to store the backup. When you connect it you will be asked whether you want to use it for TM, say yes.

  • HT203177 I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

No. TM has to look through your entire drive contents and copy them all. This will take some time.
Once the first backup is made, then subsequent backup will be much quicker, depending on how much data has changed since the last one.

  • I just bought and backed up my computer and time machine with a "Seagate BackUp Plus for Mac". Now my time machine is empty. Panicked. can anyone help?

I just bought and backed up my computer and time machine with a "Seagate BackUp Plus for Mac". Now my time machine is empty. Panicked. can anyone help?

    Lets start over...
Please restart the network.. shut down everything..
Restart in order.. modem.. router.. if different to TC.. or TC.. client devices.. wait 2min between each startup.
If the TC does not show up on the computer, in finder.. then we need more info.. what OS are you running?
Does the TC show up in Airport utility? Are you running wireless or ethernet?
If you still have issues.. plug the TC directly into the computer by ethernet.
Do a full factory reset of the TC.. and see if it now shows up.
Please tell us exactly what model TC it is and how old.. the A1xxx model number from the base will help if you don't know.
You take a screen shot of the TC opened in finder.
    eg..
My TC is named Tardis4.. click on it.. and then open the data folder.. on this one called Tardisdata.
Then take a screen shot of it so we can see what the problem is.. screenshot.. with area selection.. control + shift + 4 .. the picture goes into the desktop.. and then you click the picture icon in the posting web page controls and select the picture.

  • I have backed up my disk using Time Machine.  Now I want to delete the backed-up files from my hard drive.  But when I do and reconnect the external hard drive, the files are also deleted on that.  What do I do?

I have backed up my disk using Time Machine.  I then deleted the back-up files from my MacBook hard drive.
I then reconnected my external hard drive and find the files I deleted from my hard drive are also deleted from
my external hard drive.  Can someone tell my what what happened?  I'm confused.

    Hello,
Time Machine is not a good way to do that, when it eventually needs more room it deletes old Backups to make room.
If you really want to keep Files but remove them from the Internal Drive, then I'd get another external drive to copy or clone them to that is not used for TM.

Buy an external drive 320G or larger (much larger is preferable). I do not recommend you use TM for this, instead download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and make a clone of your drive. Once this is done you have 2 choices, you can download and install Lion on your internal drive just as you planned or download and install Lion to the external clone, the 2nd method allows you to test the Lion install before committing to it. If the clone with Lion is to your liking then just clone it back to the internal.

  • Backup entire computer using Time Machine

I was wondering whether anyone might be able to help. I am sending my Mac in to have a couple of hardware issues looked at and need to make sure that I have everything backed up before I do this.
I use Time Machine and an external hard drive to backup usually, but wanted to double check that I can restore my entire computer (3rd party apps and all) to how it was before should the HD get wiped during the repair. Is there another piece of software that anyone can recommend? I am looking for something that with one click I will be able to restore the entire computer to how it was pre-wipe.
Many thanks. Look forward to any helpful answers!

As Matt says, Time Machine will do that easily (it's not quite one-click, but it's simple). See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

Yes. If you have another external HD, by all means make a "bootable clone" of your internal HD, just in case there's a problem with your TM backups or HD (all hardware fails, sooner or later, and no backup app is perfect.)
You can use the Restore tab of Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder), or 3rd-party apps such as [CarbonCopyCloner|http://www.bombich.com> (donationware); or [SuperDuper|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html] (a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling).
It's rare, but does happen on occasion that a backup drive will fail during a restore, and everything is lost.

  • Will external hard disk with firewire help me to back up my laptop using time machine?

    Hi,
I have macbook pro from 2011 with 750GB hard disk and I try to back up my hard disk using time machine for the first time.
I used time machine before in the previous OSX versions but I had to format the external disk.
I have an external Western Digital hard disk with 3TB space. It has only usb connection.
When I try to backup all my data (650GB) the speed is 25GB per day, so it will take me about a month to backup my disk.
It's my work laptop, so I can't leave it for backup for more than 2-3 days.
I read a lot of forums and tried to see if the small speed is only at the beginning of the back up.
I also tried all the tricks with turning off the spotlight indexing and so on.
Nothing really helps, so my question is:
Is it going to help, if I buy an external disk with a firewire connection? Will I be able to backup my data in 2-3 days?
    Thanks,
    Arshavski Alexander

A Firewire drive would only be about twice as fast as USB 2, so you're still looking at 15 days. Something isn't right.  I'm usinge FW800, and my my 1TB backs up overnight.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do it, but it's not recommended to use a Time Machine volume to store other files. In this case, you can create a second volume on the external drive, so you will be able to use it to store data and transfer it to other PCs.
As you are going to use the external drive with other PCs, you can make the volume and format it in "MS-DOS (FAT)" with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Finally, you will be able to copy files to the external drive.
If you copy files to a Time Machine disk, you may damage the Time Machine file structure, so you shouldn't do it. It may not happen, but it's better not to try that. Also, you won't be able to read the Time Machine drive in a PC

  • Can I "roll back" entire computer using Time Machine?

I have VMware installed on my computer. Went into Time Machine to replace the users/documents/virtual machine folder with an earlier file; for some reason, VMware didn't recognize the virtual machine file. I went ahead, and restored teh original vm file, and prog still didn't recognize it.
I am used to using the "Goback" rollback program in windows, and thought a complete rollback would restore my original virtual machine file, but am not sure how to do this with Time Machine.
    Will Time Machine do rollbacks?
    Thanks.
    Marc

to do a full system restore, boot from the install DVD, once past the language screen go to the Utilities menu, select "restore from Time machine" and follow the instructions.

Yes. See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Also: can not seem to start up using my install CD (Leopard)
To restore a Snow Leopard backup, you must use a Snow Leopard Install disc.
and my partitioned drive is also Leopard, not Snow Leopard. Mysterious.
If in doubt, re-format it in step (c) of #14.

  • How do i restore my computer using time machine to how it was a few days ago?

I installed Maverick.  It was not a horrid idea but I cannot sync my iphone and ipad mail/contacts etc except through icloud.  And that just doesn't work for me.  The solution seems to be to restore my HD to its state prior to when i installed Maverick.  But that was a few days ago.  Luckily, I do have Time Machine.  Things are backed up, but I am a little unclear how I go about restoring to a previous incarnation of the harddrive, rather than the current one.  When I got a new HD it was easy, just plugged it in and TM transferred everything.  But I don't want to transfer the current version, I want the version from a few days ago.  How do I do this?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
To restore a Time Machine backup, hold Command and R keys while your MacBook Pro is starting up to start up in OS X Recovery. Then, plug the external drive with the Time Machine backups, and choose the option to restore a Time Machine backup.
It will let you choose which backup you want to restore, so select it and follow its steps. The hard drive will be erased

  • HT201250 Can I back up multiple volumes using Time Machine on Snow Leopard?

I have a fault with my time machine software where it is no longer able to perform incremental back ups of the volumes (partitions) I have created on my internal hard drive - every attempt results in a full back up. However incremental back up of the Mac HD is working. I have had it working perfectly in the past. I'm backing up to a dedicated external hard drive.
I have just been told by an apple support manager that Time machine on OS 10.6.8 is not designed to back up multiple volumes (partitions) on my internal hard drive, only the current Mac HD drive - is this correct? He said it shouldn't be backing up the other volumes and the reason it is doing so and has done so in the past is because of bug!
Surely this is not the case?

I would read and try this.  Pondini is very knowledgeable about Time Machine:

  • Cant back up to NAS using Time machine

    Can anybosy help
I have a 1TB Network drive, I bought after being burgled and not wanting my backup in the same room as the PC I thought this was a good idea until I moved to Apple recently.
I can see the drive in devices but it wont pick it up in Time machine
if I put a USB stick in it picks it up in devices too and shows it in Time machine!
What am I doing wrong or has Apples failed to resolve a problem that has been on going since 2007 ?
Im beginning to wish I hadn't bought this PC all the most basic things seem impossible.
