I suspect I know the answer to this question...

...which is: You'll need a new one soon, my friend. BUT, I'm in an optimistic mood so maybe someone can help me with a different, less drastic/expensive, answer. My MBP's Optical Drive, a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J, symptoms are as follows. It has always been a noisy unit but it has become particularly loud when burning and reading (oddly, louder with CDs than DVDs, although data vs av media doesn't seem matter).
But, far worse, is that when I copy files and folders onto discs for burning (using Apple's on-board Burn interface) it has started to time-out during the copy, particularly when handling larger folders upwards of 200-300mb, and displays the "spinning pinwheel of destruction". Only Relaunching the finder can exit this state but usually the Burn folder will show that the target folder did, in fact, copy completely.
I've tried copying from a variety of source drives and it always happens so I'm fairly confident that the fault lies with the Optical Drive itself or the interface and isn't a hard drive problem. Nevertheless, I've run Disk Utilities on everything, fixing both Permissions and Repairing Disks, as well as running Onyx. I'm having no other problems, just the burning hang. I have a bit less hard disk space free than the 10% of my 140 gig drive I usually keep but still have over 8 gigs free and the problems started just last week, after I'd burned a number of discs for as archives.
If the consensus IS that this is a dying Optical Drive (it is several years old and I use it often, but have used other Mac-installed drives, in my towers, far more and expected this one to last as long as those) -- is it the type of thing a user is able to access/replace oneself? I have always expanded and updated the hardware in my Mac towers but have not yet opened up my MBP.
I'm also quite curious to know why burning data to a CD would be so much noisier, suddenly, than to a DVD, if there is any logical explanation for it.
Thank you!

Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? I believe that it tests the optical drive.
You could always consider using an external optical drive, preferably firewire.
If you decide you want to replace your internal drive, here is a link that will give you instructions:
http://www.ifixit.com/
Whichever route you decide to go, you might want to research optical drives first. I have read many complaints about Apple's notebook optical drives, and it may be you can find a better one to use as a replacement.
If you do open up your Mac to replace the optical drive, you might also want to replace your hard drive with a larger and faster one. It sounds like you could use more hard drive space. You can get up to 500 GB capacity and some are available in 7200 RPM.
Good luck!

  • Nobody knows the answer to this question...

    Alright, so yesterday I deauthorized all of my computers for itunes.  I copied all my music files from my previous computer and then copied them to the new computer.  All the work seemed to be done, however, I tried to play a particular song and it said that I had reached my 5 computer limit.  Then I noticed that I have several song files in the same situation.  How can I authorize these songs?  Help!

    If it is only doing this on some of your songs then it is likely those songs were purchased with a different account. If this is the case you will need to authorize those other accounts as well. If the songs were all purchased under the one account you just deauthorized I would suggest contacting itunes store support at www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact and ask then to help with the deauthorizing because it doesn't seem to have worked. They are email based so it may take some time.

  • I should know the answer to this question but I just forgot..please help

    Hello,
    My daughter has an iphone 5, she has had it since July and has never plugged it into the computer. If I plug it in itunes asks if it should be backed up from a previous backup or set up as new phone. I don't want her to lose all her info, pics, imessage conversations etc. Should I even bother plugging it in? We share the same itunes account but she has her own apple id.
    I know I'm being forgetful so I appreciate any help.....I need iphone for dummies!
    Thanks so much

    It is both prudent and recommended to Backup on a Regular Basis.

    If it's a 2011 model, the limit is 16GB. If it's a 2010 model, the limit is 8GB.

  • When running an xml publisher report the xml output leads to 9 mb and the excel output file leads to 20 mb.But the output records is originally 4000 records. When copy to new excel it is showing 3.5 mb only. Does anyone knows the answer for this issue?

    When running an xml publisher report the xml output leads to 9 mb and the excel output file leads to 20 mb. The records contained in excel file is 4000 records. When taking the excel records and copy to new excel file the excel file size is 3.5 mb only.Why does the oracle software generates 20mb file?
    Does any one knows the answer please advice?

    Hello,
    This issue is because the Excel output from BI Publisher is MHTML (XML Publisher generates XHTML) not binary .xls.
    MHTML and XHTML are more verbose formats than binary .xls.
    It will be large because the current Excel output is just an HTML and not compressed like PDF. Please use the workaround (save it as .xls file).  This is a known limitation of RTF layout templates.
    BI Publisher Enterprise has a new feature True Excel Templates. The layouts generate binary Excel output.
    Excel Output File Size Generated By BI Publisher is Very Large (Doc ID 760437.1)

  • What is the answer for this question?

    For a tree T, let nI denote the number of its internal nodes, and let nE denote the number of its external nodes. Show that if every internal node in T has exactly 3 children, then nE = 2 nI + 1.

In this case the homework probably needs to be proven using a piece of Java code.

  • I can't buy music on iTunes because I don't know the answers to my questions

    I got a new computer and when I go on itunes and try to purchase music it makes me answer my questions.
    The problem with this is I don't know the answers and the email that I'm supposed the send the answers too is deactivated. I had this happened before and I fixed it I just don't remeber how, help.

    If you don't have access to your rescue email account (you won't be able to change it until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support or Apple to get them reset.
    e.g. you can try contacting iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management , and then 'Forgotten Apple ID security questions'
    or try ringing Apple in your country and ask to talk to the Accounts Security Team : http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down this page to update your rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312

  • HT5312 I forgot the security answer also the email is incorrect. So can i use the other email to know the answer of security question

    The reset link will only work for the rescue email address that you currently have on your account. If it's wrong (you won't be able to change it until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

  • HT201303 I don't know the answer to my questions

    Hi I'm asked questions and can't remember the answer.

    If you have a rescue email address set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
    If you don't have a rescue email address set up then go to Express Lane  and select 'iTunes' from the list of 'products' in the middle of the screen.
    Then select 'iTunes Store', and on the next screen select 'Account Management'
    Next choose 'iTunes Store Account Questions' or 'iTunes Store account security' (it appears to vary by country) and fill in that you'd like your security questions/answers reset.
    You should get an email reply within about 24 hours (and check your Spam folder as well as your Inbox).
    Or you could see if the second half of Kappy's reply in this thread helps : https://discussions.apple.com/message/20357006#20357006

  • I hope you know the answer for this "easy" question

    I created a package for my JSP and import it to be used in a JSP. It works great, but for some reason, it displays an error message saying it can't find the class in import. Can anyone explain that? Thanks.
    null

    Have you "registered" the class in the JServ.conf file in the JServ directory under the Apache install? The JServ engine will not know where to find the class that you want if it is not in any of the paths that were set up suring the install (CLASS_PATH environment variable). To register a class, look in the file for directives named wrapper.classpath= . Add the jar file that contains the class that you wish to use. This should fix your problem.

  • Currency Conversion Rule Does Anybody know the answer to this?

    Hello All-
    I am trying to understand a script for currency converison planning application. I am 9.3.1 and its is a out of box application. I was going through the following script :
    1st part of script is simple
    FIX("Actual","FY10",jan,feb,mar,apr,may,june,july,aug,sept,oct,nov,dec,"HSP_InputValue","Final",@LEVMBRS("Accounts",0),@LEVMBRS("Entities",0),))
    DATACOPY "Local" TO "USD";
    DATACOPY "Local" TO "GBP";
    ENDFIX ;
    2nd part of script :
    ELSEIF (@ISUDA("Entities","GBP") AND @ISMBR("USD"))
    "Local" * "Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_GBP" / "Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_USD";
    ELSEIF (@ISUDA("Entities","USD") AND @ISMBR("GBP"))
    "Local" * "Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_USD" / "Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_GBP";
    I am concerned about the second part where in for all the entities that has UDA GBP converts the values in USD & vice versa.
    I went to the table in plnning web where we store the FX rates. At the top i can see a drop down for "To currency" which is USD, and in planning terms my guess is this is the base currency for the application? Then in row i see GBP and
    in method it says "Multiply" and going forward it has all the avg and end rates stored for the Time periods. I want to know what this "Multiply" means? i retreived the rates on spreadsheet and found HSP_Rate_USD ==1. So above in the
    second part of the script for USD entities and memeber GBP it divides USD rate by GBP Rate (1/ GBP rate) and i am not sure what rate we get by doing this division. I was assuming that it would take the local amonut and divide directly
    with "HSP_Rate_GBP" ? For rest of the currencies as well its doing the same math. The 1 for "HSP_Rate_USD" is this a default value stored when application is created ?
    Please advise!
    Thanks!

    Seems to be OK - assumptions:
    - USD is your base currency ("Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_USD" = 1)
    - exchange rates are defined as so that when you multiply them with the USD value, you receive the value in the given currency
    Let's simplify the formula:
    "ELSEIF (@ISUDA("Entities","GBP") AND @ISMBR("USD")) " means
    If the local curreny is GBP and my reporting currency is USD
    Then USD = value in "Local" currency" * exchange rate GBP
    Calculation steps:
    (1)
    - Local" * "Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_GBP" / "Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_USD";
    - and ("Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_USD" = 1
    (2)
    - Local" * "Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_GBP" / 1;
    (3)
    - Local" * "Version"->"Currency"->"Entities"->"HSP_Rate_GBP" ;
    Simple or not?
