I Think I Broke My Printer

I have a 1510xi All-In-One printer that I have always liked.  I have a Mac PowerPC G5 running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard). I don’t have an Image Zone icon in my dock, but I have an icon named “HP PSC 1500 series (1 job)”.
It needed a new black-ink cartridge so I bought one and tried to install it, as I have many times before. When I tried to snap in the new cartridge something went wrong and my hand may have done damage. I got ink stains on my hand.
At rest, the cartridge assembly is docked on the right and the “Check Print Cartridge” lamp is flashing.  Nothing happens when I open or close the device door. If I turn off the power it goes through about 30 seconds of moving heads and making clicking/popping/snapping sounds, some unusually violent. The same thing happens when I turn it back on and also if I press the “Cancel/Resume” button on the Control Panel.
Did I hopelessly break my printer? Is there anything I can do?

FIXED!
The short of it: it was the RAM.
The long of it:
Switched out the RAM for known good RAM and booted up no problem. Looked at the original RAM, looked OK but Scrubbed (gently) the connectors with a clean toothbrush, then dusted it. Re-installed and booted no problem on the original, cleaned RAM.
As for the optical drive problem...It still wasn't ejecting properly. After playing around with the optical drive for a bit, I concluded that the entry to the optical drive itself and the slot in the case were not quite aligned properly. Like the optical drive was sitting a little too high, or alternatively, the slot was too low.
To fix it, I tried sitting the optical drive lower, but that didn't seem to work. What did work was a bit of force. I put a quarter in the slot of the case and pried it open more along the length of it. I did look a little like the top half of the slot was arching very slightly down in the middle of the slot. Anyhow, it worked. The quarter trick is also a good one for getting the disk out in the beginning when I wouldn't eject.
That's it...problem(s) resolved!

re: 8220 printer.  Thinking of buying this printer.  Some reviews talk about excessive ink use, especially on start up cleaning.  Comments?

I upgraded from the Canon MP990 to the MG8220 a few weeks ago. I upgraded for the native AirPrint and Google CloudPrint features.
The print head in the MG8220 is the same as the MP990. Ink usage is about the same between the two units. The first three sets of ink replacements will happen faster than the future ones. I could explain why in a short essay, but basically it has to do with proper head maintenance. A good amount of ink is used in the initial setup of the machine to align the head and also fill the head and its small internal reservoir between the tanks and the actual head.
I printed six 4x6 photos and about 300 pages on plain paper before I had to replace any ink tanks from the inks that came with the MG8220.
I print almost every day and learned with my MP990 to just leave the machine on 24/7 unless I know I will not print for days as the MP990 and MG8220 prime the ink tanks every time the machines are powered on.
If you want to get the MG8220, get it ASAP as it is a discontinued unit and at this time Canon does not have an exact replacement successor unit. I do not think Canon will have a 2013 AIO model with film scanning, CCD scan sensor, etc. The top of the line model looks to be the MG6320 with the lower quality CIS scan sensor.
Usually new Canon printers are first posted on Canon UK’s website. The new MG6320 and MG5420 for example were posted there in early September, but were just announced on Canon USA a few weeks ago.
Compared to HP’s Photosmart machines that have 564 ink tanks, the ink usage is better on Canon’s CLI-226 machines by far. The same if you want to compare Canon’s ink usage to what the Epson Artisan units use too.
To sum it up; Canon is a better bang for the buck when looking @ OEM ink usage, machine features, quality of built and you get actual USA-based support and service.

  • Iphoto--I think I broke it

I just purchased the macbook with iphoto 6 and have never used iphoto before. I copied some of my pictures folders from my windows machine to the pictures folder. I then imported them into iphoto. I didn't know it would put everything into the library sorted by years and the last roll folder. I wanted the folders sorted the way I had them in the pictures folder. So, I proceeded to delete all 800 pictures by holding the delete key. Iphoto crashed three times while doing this. I then imported one folder and attempted to drag and drop the pictures into some albums I created in the source pane. Drag and drop wouldn't move the pictures. I restarted my computer and drag and drop started working but now select all does not select anything. I am selecting the last roll, clicking edit so the thumbnails appear then attempting to select all the thumbnails but select all only selects one picture. I tried shift-clicking to select a group of them. When I drag and drop it says I'm moving however many I have selected but when I click on the album I'm moving the pictures to, only one or two pictures have been moved. I tried rebuilding the photo library but that didn't solve the problem.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I don't think you broke iPhoto, but have you
considered using the Help at all?
    1. To duplicate your folder structure in iPhoto,
simply drag the folders to the Source (or left-hand)
pane in iPhoto. There they will be automatically
saved into Albums. If you start at the bottom of your
folder structure, you can create the enclosing
    folders in iPhoto.
    2. When you tried to remove the 800 photos by using
the delete key - well it might have been better to
seclect them and move them to the iPhoto trash. Then
got to the iPhoto menu and empty the trash.
Now your photos are removed from iPhoto and the
    iPhoto library folder.
    3. When you're trying to operate drag and drop and
select, first make sure your in the library, not in
an album or smart album. Is it possible that you were
trying to drag the photos into a place they already
    were?
I have used help extensively but can't find the answer to my questions.
No, not possible. I'm in the library attempting to select multiple photos and drag and drop into an album. I can drop them one at a time but I can't select all nor is it moving the number of photos indicated. For example, I selected 8 photos, dragged them to an album. A +8 appeared as I dragged the pictures but when I looked at the album there were only three pictures there.

  • 10.5.1 broke wireless printing to HP 6210 All In One

    That's my educated guess.
I got a MacBook in Nov. last year. It came with 10.5 pre-installed.
I disconnected my existing HP 6210 All In One from my wife's blueberry iMac and plugged it into the USB port on our Airport Express.
Wireless printing worked two or three times. We don't print that much or that often. I was so excited that we could print wirelessly.
At some point I installed to 10.5.1. Pretty soon actually. Probably less than a month after getting the computer. I'm almost 100% positive that it was AFTER that point that this problem started happening and I've installed 10.5.2 (which was supposed to fix wireless printing issues.) It's still happening. Here's what happens.
    • While connected to the Aiport Express, The printer shows up in the list or printers. Several times I've deleted it and re-added it since this problem started. It shows up as a BonJour printer and it's the only way one can add it. The Mac even picks the right driver.
    • System preferences shows the printer in the printer list, and it shows a green light next to it, and it says "Ready, Idle" (or something to that effect.)
    • I send a print order from say, Safari.
    • The print queue for the HP opens.
    • The print queue shows "Opening printer connection" and "Connecting" and it stays like that for a long time until the queue stops itself. The "Pause printer" button turns into "Resume".
    • If, while the print queue is trying to connect, one plugs in an Ethernet cable into the MacBook, the printer all of a sudden begins printing any and all print orders in the queue. Note that the Ethernet cable is connected to the same Ethernet hub as the Airport Express.
    • One could also send print orders while the Ethernet cable is connected, and this works just fine, but that's not the problem.
    • If, while the print queue is trying to connect, one plugs in the USB cable that is connected to the printer directly into the MacBook, this does absolutely nothing. The print queue just hangs.
    • I went to the HP website, and downloaded what appears to be a new set of drivers, and setup software. Installation went fine, BUT I could not "set up" the printer until I connected the USB cable that is connected to the printer directly into the MacBook. Again, that's not the problem.
    • The HP website also says that Mac OS X 10.5 has the necessary drivers and no installation is needed.
    • The HP website also has a page that lists instructions to set up an HP device on a Wireless network. The instructions involve making sure that the device is set up for wireless capabilities, and connecting to it via BonJour and some other stuff. I can't get very far into this process, because I've been over all the menu options on the printer itself and I can't see anything about wireless setup. I've also looked at the manual (PDF) and there's only one single occurrence of the word "wireless" and it has nothing to do with setup. I forget what it's about right now. It's on the second to last page or somewhere near the very end.
    • So that's where I am right now. New drivers, no printing. It worked with 10.5 and I strongly suspect that 10.5.1 broke it. And that 10.5.2 did not fix it at all.
    • I would like to test my theory by reverting to 10.5 but I've already had to re-install the OS once and recover from a backup once after re-formatting the internal HD. Better not mess with that.
Any comments and/or questions that would help me fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Good news. It appears to be fixed!
Of all the things I've done, I'm convinced that what fixed it was resetting the printing system. A forum linked to from another place I posted this question mention that it helped others. I found how to reset the printing system in Leopard by searching for it online.
I went to System Preferences > Print & Fax and right clicked on the left had sidebar. The contextual menu had the command "Reset Printing System". This warned me that it would delete all my printers. I said OK. Sure enough all my printers were gone.
For good measure, did the following:
    - I re-installed the new HP software.
    - I re-set up the HP 6210 while connected directly through USB using the HP setup Assistant. This process adds the printer both as a printer and as a Fax in System Preferences > Print & Fax.
    - I opened the print queue and the utility and print a test page using this direct method.
    - I disconnected the HP 6210 from the computer and connected it to the Airport Express.
    - I went back to System Preferences > Print & Fax and clicked on the plus sign to add another printer
    - (additional note) In the resulting dialog box, I tried adding the printer as an IP printer (using the Airport Express' IP address) but for some reason could not find the right driver (I was looking for one with the term "OfficeJet"--more on that below). I picked a different driver knowingly and got a weird message about the software being incomplete. Sure enough, printing to this new printer added this way with the wrong driver did not work at all. I decided to try the OS's own automatic way to add the printer (see below).
    - In that same dialog window referenced above, I clicked on the leftmost icon (I think it says "Default") and the (at this point wireless) printer was already on the list as a BonJour printer. I made sure to give it a different name than the already added, direct USB connected (same) printer by adding the word "wireless" so in the printer list and print dialing windows and it's print queue it's called "HP OfficeJet 6200 Series wireless" as opposed to "HP OfficeJet 6200 Series" which is the original direct connected (same) printer. And the driver the OS picked automatically is "HP All In One 5.3.1" (as far I can remember--it could be something a little different).
    - I sent a print order from Safari, and boom! I started to print almost immediately! After about 5 minutes, I sent it again, and it printed again! Then I printed page one of an email from Mail, and it worked again!
    - So far so good. We'll see if this holds up.
Thanks for all the comments, suggestions and links that helped me (apparently) solve this.

  • Firefox 19 Beta and the Latest Acobat updates Broke PDF Printer

Details at Bugzilla:  https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=837369  (Not Responding Error)
In a netshell, in FF 19 beta I can only now create PDF's if I do it from the Print Preview Pane.
In the previous FF update prior to FF 19, PDF printing was sporatic, BUT I could usually print to PDF if after choosing the fiename to print to, and minimizing Firefox.
It appears that the Dialog "Creating Adobe PDF" is being blocked and hidden.

Yea, I know it does appear to be a hit or miss situation and, for me, mostly miss.  The "Creating Adobe PDF" window gets really burried.
Sometimes it never, ever completes, but the document does.  Other times it will appear just as you Kill Firefox.  Somtimes the docuament names are even wrong.
In short, it's really messed up.
There is Firefox doing things, Windows doing things, Distiller doing things and they really all need to be on top, but not on top of each other.  I think Firefox is monopolizing the desktop.
It's painfully obvious that the PDF prnter file dialog should come to the front automatically and it doesn;t.  It hasn't for a while.  Again, Firefox wins.
Notice that when you move some of the Adobe dialogs, the Firefox screen underneath leaves holes.

  • I think I broke my CD drive...

Broken Cd drive + finals week approaching=not good
    Here's the deal:
I was ejecting a Cd, and I think something was blocking it, so it could not get out. There was a loud clicking noise.
Now, the cd drive does not take cds. I am able to insert them, but usually it "takes" the cd without me having to push it all the way in. Now it doesn't "take" cd's, and everytime I turn on my computer, there is an awful clicking noise in the disk drive. If I manually push a disk all the way in, the drive will not eject it unless I restart and hold down the eject key.
I seriously doubt it's something I can fix myself, and it's probably really expensive to replace a drive.
Does anyone know how much it costs? Would it be cheaper to buy an external burner?
I know someone will ask, so I will say it now - No, I do not have applecare or any sort of warranty to my knowledge. I bought this computer used on Ebay, but it's been wonderful until now.
    I can't believe I broke my drive
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #88275 on Troubleshooting the slot load disc drive (Portables). I don't know how much it will cost because we don't know what happened. The only people who can really tell you how much it is going to cost you is an Apple Certified Technician from your local Apple Store/Reseller.
Buying a external burner will probably be cheaper then having it replaced.

  • Security Update 2008-002 Broke Cups/Printing

This may look like a duplicate topic but read on.
It seems that there were some "fixes" done to Cups that has now created an issue we had to deal with in 10.4 and 10.3. Sending user names and passwords in plain text as authentication will allow users to print but using the authentication box will just return an NTSTATUS_LOGONFAILURE among other things.
People have been theorizing that it is Audio Hijack Pro or Air Foil. I have neither of those programs. I have already tried using Pacifist to replace a possibly corrupt pstop file in /usr/libexec/cups/filter/, but this has fixed nothing.
This is an example of a working print pulled from the console. This is where I have put my password name as smb://name:[email protected]/printername. When I am prompted (yes, unlike 10.4, it will prompt you for a name and password) I put in guest. This is a restricted printer, so guest would not work unless I had ALREADY put in my name and password plain text above.

This is the same crap cups/OSX pulled in 10.3 and 10.4. This is the same crap that required that we have our users put in PLAIN TEXT passwords. Leopard was AWESOME in that it fixed this flaw by allowing authentication, but apparently somebody's flaw is another's working system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I will be rolling back to 10.5.2 in the mean time to see if that works.

Alright, Guest printing does not work. I have not tried it at home, but it certainly does not at work. Printing to my Windows 2k3 box with a printer hooked up to it via USB and shared does not work anymore as well as this problem of not being able to print to any work printers. I get the same errors as before.
I will have to get back to you on our samba box. The people that deal with it are out at the moment.
instead of using Guest, what if you had an account on the PC for the Mac and used that, without creating the smb queue with account details?
I think you will have to elaborate a bit on that, I am unsure if I understand. I have several accounts on the pc and any one I try will not work. I have tried many different users, test accounts. They won't work if I authenticate as guest, unless I have inputted their information in the samba queue. So, it does print, but only if I authenticate as guest while printing to a printer added with the usr:pwd already in the query.
What tells me that it isn't a samba server issue, is that my macs at home will refuse to print anymore. If it was a windows update, that doesn't hold water, because a few of our print servers are running on nix (I think solaris, but I could be wrong) as well as a windows based print server. I get the same set of errors on everyone. I would test this out on my 12" PB, but software update on it seems to have broken, so I have no way of checking to see if it has the next update.
Thank you for ideas and help. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you. As far as your question as to what samba server I am running, lets assume that it's a Windows 2k3 box with file and printer sharing turned on. It has no other quirks about it (I am describing my machine at home).

  • Hp printer update on aug 8th broke my printing capability

I have a MacPro running Lion... all latest updates.
The HP Printer Drivers release on 8/8/2012 has now made it impossible for print anything.  I have an HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP.... which is connected via Ethernet.
Anything I attempt to print - whether from Safari, textedit, Microsoft Word, anything... the print options screen appears asking for what pages you wish to print, and once I click on "Print" everything freezes for about 40-45 seconds, then the application (Safari, textedit, Word, etc) crashes and closes.
The error report window appears with its usual info and saying it will send the report to Apple... and that's as far as I get.
I have turned Mac OFF, turned printer OFF, etc.
The sad thing is.... my wife can print to the printer from her Windows PC laptop.... but I can't print from the Mac.

Delete the printer and re-add it.
Then do a software update check before you try and print.

  • Can't Install a Fax Modem - Snow Leopard thinks it is a printer

We have 4 computers on a network three of which are running Snow Leopard. The fourth is a G5 running tiger with an internal modem. I have set this up to send faxes and allow other computers to use it and Printer sharing is enabled.
When I try and install the Internal Modem in the Snow Leopard machines it comes up as a printer, not a fax machine and defaults to the "Generic Postscript Printer" driver. Any ideas how to install this as a Fax?

I was not able to repro with latest Vipre 2014 build. Please ensure your virus definitions are upto date.

I have a Brother HL-2140 hooked via USB to my Mac Mini and have printer sharing enabled. My Macbook pro cannot see this printer when I try to add a printer in system preferences.
Prior to upgrading to 10.8.2 I was able to share this printer.
The mac mini is hooked up directly to the Arris router provided by the cable company via ethernet cable and the macbook pro is on the wifi network setup on the router.
Any way to get printer sharing working again? thanks.

Try enabling File Sharing on the Mini for starters. Then from the MBPro, with Finder open, do you see the Mini in the Shared section of the sidebar? If you do, then try to add the printer again. If not, then check the network settings on the MBPro and compare to the Mini. They should have the same IP subnet (typically the first three sets of numbers) and the same subnet mask and router address.

  • URGENT PLEASE HELP! Think I broke my eeprom

    Hi there,
after getting a good manual for setting up a RAID-1 on my Netra, I broke something.
I set two new devaliases for the existing hdds. like the manual said.
After rebooting, it said Can't find boot device.
It went to the ok Promt, there I tried a devunset, followed by a reset-all.
Now, it won't boot, I always reach a
Boot device: disk File and args:
    Fast Data Access MMU Miss
    ok
    That's it.
    Please help me out.

Couple of things to try. Can you boot off the net or CD/DVD ? I noticed that you have disk and disk0 to be same. You mention that you mirrored root. Do you know what the other disk was ? If so you can try booting the other disk.
    ok> boot disk1

  • Going insane - I think I broke my system!

I'm totally freaking out right now. I was resizing my partition via GParted on SystemRescueCD and I think I deleted everything on my Linux partition when I accidentally cancelled! Oh my gosh I need that stuff (I don't have an external backup!). My dad has all his students' things on there he needs.
How can I fix this? Grub gives me like error 2 or something. I'm on a Puppy livecd at the moment. I'm freaking out more than I can ever remember freaking out. Please help if you can!
    (Kubuntu 7.10, gnome installed too)

sajro, that sounds awful... Anyway, I have never heard of anyone cancelling a resize (not that I've heard that much, so don't read too much into that), so I have no idea in what state a system like yours could have ended up in. If you're lucky (well...) only the partition table was killed. Maybe TestDisk can do something for you? Or Foremost. I have never used these tools myself, but have heard good things about them. For instance, recently there was a thread where an unfortunate dd command was rectified with TestDisk. Before you start fiddling with these tools, it is important to make a complete copy of the ruined disk, in case you fail on your first try to fix it.

  • I think I broke my mini

I decided to install Linux (PC Linux OS) along side Mac OS X because... I wanted to. I booted my mac mini into a PCLOS live CD and installed it on an external firewire drive. When it was done installing it said something about doing something to a bootloader, which is where i think the problem lies. When I shut down my computer the PCLOS disc ejected, and when I turned it on i got a flashing "?" mark on a folder, meaning my mac wont boot from its internal HDD. I put in my OSX install disc and formatted the internal HDD and then reinstalled OSX, but it still wont boot into OSX. Also now the OSX disc wont come out.
Now I really don't care about installing PCLOS on this machine. Can any one help me get my OSX back? Please?
    -Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi
I would try smc and pram first, if won't help then start from Leopard install disc and go Disc Utility. There you can format the HD in zeros and then install os again. It may be helpful:
