So I've been getting these weird random freeze for a while now, and I'm not sure why except that I think my hard drives dieing.
These are the errors I get when I run smartctl -l error:

I'm not quite sure what these errors mean so if someone could enlighten me, and yes this is the drive my archlinux install is in. All my other drives seem fine with no errors.

MacBookPro got extremely slow recently. Is my HDD dying?

Just about a week ago, my Macbook Pro (13 inch, late 2012, standard configuration) suddenly got extremela slow (although RAM and CPU are both rather low).
I get the beach ball doing very simple tasks like opening a new Tab in finder or even by hovering over the red X from a window.
Apple Hardware Test didn't find anything wrong, as well as the disc Inspector, but when I was running a benchmark (iQuickMark) i got reeeaaaaaally bad results regarding the hard drive (image attached).
Strangely when an app or a process is running, it's running totally fine. I even could play a whole concert with MainStage2 and as soon as the performance-mode was active (after about 10 minutes of loading) -> no more lag at all.
That's why I think there is a problem with my HDD.
Do you think it's dying (after 1 and a half years?) or is there a different problem.

New information...
The Hard drive seems fine!
I exchanged it with a brand new Samsung SSD, and put the old HDD in a USB-case.
Now I can Boot from the USB-Drive without any problem. But the new(!) internal SSD doesn't work.
When I try to format/partition it via the disc manager, I get an error message when trying to format in MacOS extended format (no problem formatting in FAT).
So my new guess is, that it's the Hard Drive Controller that may be problematic.
Is there any way, this could be fixed? Or am I doomed to always have my drive connected via USB?

HDD died, problems woith Final cut registration

Hi,
A couple of weeks ago my G5s HDD died and on it was a registered version of Final cut.
I have the install disks however I want to know if I can I re-install Final cut using the same serial number ?
If not Is their a contact at apple who can sought this problem out?

Equium A300D - possibly my HDD died

I bought my Equium A300D (I think that's the correct model anyway) from PC World in September last year after my old laptop died on me (fried hard drive due to the processor cooling fan breaking).
The old laptop, had been making some strange whirring/screeching noises at times for a number of months, but I'd rather foolishly ignored it thinking it was just a fan that wasn't balanced quite right or something - in hindsight not a good decision to take!
My Equium's been fine until I switched it on this morning, and found it was making the familiar horrible screeching/whirring sound, and I switched it off again rather quickly.
The screeching kicked in almost immediately after I'd switched it on. Three times I've tried to switch it back on, with the same result, and understandably I'm very concerned about it and didn't want to risk leaving it switched on for fear of causing any more damage.
Ill computers are never good news at the best of times, but particularly not at the moment as I'm part way through filling in a rather long and complex form that I have to have ready by Wednesday. I'm completely it on a saveable pdf version of the form which has taken me about three weeks to complete to where I'd got up to last night, and though I use an online backup service, I can't restore files to another computer without overwriting whatever's there already, so I'm panicking somewhat. (Also, my Equium's got a Vista OS, and my desktop I'm currently on is still on XP).
Three questions:
1) Does a whirring/screeching sound as soon as it's switched on sound like it could be another dying hard drive?
2) Would taking it to my local independent computer shop (who usually tend to be able to do minor repairs and put in new drives while you wait) rather than PC World invalidate the warranty?
I'm just not sure what to do for the best, as whatever I do I need to do it quickly, because I haven't long until I have to have finished this form (and although I have the online backup, rather foolishly I don't have an external backup of it), and even if I can get the Equium fixed quickly if it is the hard drive, it takes a number of days to download and restore files from the online backup, which is time I don't have at the moment.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the response. That was what was worrying me, as my last laptop did exactly the same before it died last year. With that one it turned out the strange noises I'd been getting for months (and had ignored) was a faulty fan, which eventually went completely and overheated the HDD. Fortunately as I had the online backup I was able to restore all my data to this new one, though it did take about a week, as the speed you can restore at's limited by the speed of your broadband connection, and I did have around 25GB to restore!
I ended up taking this one to PC World on Saturday morning, where I bought it from, who said they couldn't deal with laptops in-store as they weren't trained in laptops, and that I'd have to contact Toshiba, which with my deadline looming really wasn't an option. The guy in the shop rather unhelpfully advised that I didn't have to do anything straight away and that I could try just using it for half an hour at a time and then switching off for a while and it might be okay if I did that... * rolls eyes *
In the end I took it to my local computer shop who said they could have a look at it within the hour (this was about 12.30 on Saturday) and depending on what the problem was and whether they'd got any parts needed in stock, they should be able to sort it out before they closed that evening.
It turned out that the vents on the underside of it were clogged (I'd been using it just on my lap, and they said it was probably a combination of bits of fluff and fibres from fabrics and dust - I'm now using a lapdesk!) which was unbalancing one of the cooling fans. They cleaned it all out and blew out all the vents with compressed air, and I picked it up again at 3pm. :)
All's working fine now and no more noisy fan (and the HDD's fine), and it was worth paying the small amount to get it all cleaned out to get it sorted the same day. Hopefully now I should still meet my Wednesday deadline, though I have now put the work on a memory stick as well as having my online backup!

Time MAchine issue or had WD HDD died?

For the last two years I have had My Book Premium 500gb External HDD partitioned (using Disk Utility) into two equal volumes that I have named MyBook 1 and 2 respectively. I use My Book 1 for for my Time Machine backup drive and My Book 2 for odds and ends and my iTunes library. My Book 2 get
Recently my iMac has been slow booting up. I checked all my volumes (including my iMacs internal HDD) over for errors and found a number of serious errors in Mybook 1. I was prepared to reformat this volume and start over with the Time Machine backups because this volume had corrupted before about a year ago. Anyway Disk Warrior got my MyBook working again for about a week. However I recall that it mentioned DW reporting that it had made 'Volume Wrapper repairs where necessary" or something similar.
Anyway the other day both volumes disappeared from my desktop. I fired up Disc Utility, then Disk Warrior but neither programme could see the MyBook Drive. Then my iMac refused to boot up. I got the 'white screen of death'. The MyBook began making a faint clicking noise about once every second or so. The only way to get my iMac to boot up was to disconnect my MyBook Premium HDD from the Firewire connection. I couldn't even boot from my Disk Warrior DVD unless the MyBook disconnected.
So I am thinking my My Book has died. and wondering whether there any way to recover it even though my iMac won't start up with it connected?
Anyway, next day I got the external HDD working again.
The iMac was off but I noticed that the MyBook was still spinning after several hours so I pulled the power cable out of the drive. The spinning stopped but for some reason the round blue display on the front remained lit up. In fact it only went out when I removed the Firewire cable from the MyBook leaving the iMac end in situ . The MyBook was quite warm but not hot.
I decided to leave it alone overnight and went away. Came home from work this evening. Pondering about the problem I turn off Time Machine in the System Preferences pane and wrote the above account.
An hour later I plugged the MyBook back in with the iMac running. Nothing happened but I didn't expect it too. So, on a hunch, I restarted my iMac. Lo, it fired up immediately. Not very very slowly or stuck at the grey screen. Both volumes appear on the desktop. The only difference is both have the yellow and white Firewire icon, presumably because I have turned off Time Machine.
So my hunch is that Time Machine has an issue - not necessarily with Snow Leopard.

I got it working again by removing and then replacing the cable firstly at the HDD end, without success and then at the Mac end. This time all booted up and both volumes appeared on the desk top.
The Hdd then spent over an hour transferring about 140 gigs (MyBook2) to my internal Hdd. No problems that I could discern. The external HDD spun down but a short while later it was spun up continuosly again. By way of an experiment I went to the Desktop and ejected both volumes. The external HDD spun down.
Now however I'm back to nothing on the desktop and a continuously spun-up External HDD.
I'm looking through the WD Support pages now with a view of interrogating them about this. Hopefully it is only a matter of updating the firmware as was mentioned earlier I think.

My hdd is dying... I would like to know what kind of hdd i could put inside ...

You should be able to put any Ultra ATA drive into the eMac without any problems. It doesn't have a limit to the hard drive capacity so a 120 gig or higher drive would do you well.

P.S. What exactly is your current hard drive doing that makes you think it is going bad? The hard drive manufacturer might replace it under warranty.

Old HDD died, new HDD doesn't have Thinkvantage. Help...

The HDD that came with my T61P died.
I purchased and installed a new HDD, but now the computer is missing a lot of drivers and software that I would like to have back on the computer (namely, ThinkVantage, fingerprint login, Touchpad Navigation).
I visited the T61P driver support page and downloaded all drivers for Vista-32 and installed them, but that did not solve all of my issues.
Things that still do now work:
1.) I don't know how to get ThinkVantage back on the computer (Hidden recovery partition).
2.) Fingerprint scanner still does not work.
3.) "Fn" keyboard Function buttons do not work
NOTE: This is after I have installed all applicable drivers.
I can't seem to figure out what to do next to resolve these issues.
Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Lenovo forum.
I think the easiest way for you to restore the recovery partition(s) is to re-install from a set of product recovery CDs. If you didn't create these before (suppose you didn't since you would probably have used them already) you should be able to order a set from Lenovo.
If you're not dead set on having the hdd recovery partitions, you could purchase a copy of Acronis True Image and use that instead of Rescue and Recovery for whole-drive backups to an external USB drive. I've found such backups and restores to be far faster (about 20 minutes, depends on the size of your disk of course) than using R&R. But the ThinkVantage button won't work on boot.
You're probably missing some drivers that are causing your other problems. The easy way to get them is to install and run ThinkVantage System Update; it will download and install all necessary drivers for your ThinkPad.

HDD died, replaced with a larger drive and can't restore from TM/TC

One of my kids managed to fry the HDD in my trusty MacBook. Luckily, I have everything backed up via TM onto our Time Capsule.
I installed a new drive and formatted/partitioned it with a 10.5.2 MacBook boot disc. The problem now is the disc will not open TM so I can run a complete data restore from the TC. When I select the TM utility from the pulldown, nothing happens. The machine just sits there, although I've verified that it is connected to the TC via our home network.
I also receive a dialogue that System 10 cannot be installed on my machine, although it was running 10.5.6 perfectly before the HDD crashed.
I've just purchased a Leopard retail full install disc, thinking that will be the solution to successfully moving all the data from TC back to my machine.
I wonder whether there's a quick(er) solution to this whole thing, and whether I didn't waste money buying a new Leopard install disc.
Thoughts?

If the disc you're using gets as far as the option to restore from backup, it should be fine. After selecting +Restore from Backup+ you should get another screen allowing you to select your TM drive, or search for a Time Capsule.
Do you not get that screen at all, or do you get it but it's empty and can't find your TC?
I don't know much about Time Capsules, but can you connect it directly to your Mac via Ethernet?
That might get the installer to recognize it, and if so, the restore will be much, much faster.

I think my Mbp's HDD has partially failed. It is the original 100gig drive , which was 95% full.
It started getting incredibly slow so I decided to reboot it. It has not been possible to boot.
I have managed to connect the internal drive to another mac using FireWire and T on startup.
The drive shows up and the data can be accessed albeit slowly.
I tried to repair the drive in disk utility and it came up with a lot of " invalid node structures" and " invalid record counts".
The disk utility seemed to not complete the process so I had to quit it.
I can't boot from the cd , but I may be doing it wrong.
Can anyone help me with the next thing to try?

Slow access even with Target Disk Mode (TDM) can indicate a failing drive, but it's possible that drive can be rehabilitated by continuing to off-load files and keep trying with Disk Utility. Sometimes, enough DU runs can restore sanity.
I'd check the SMART status first (try: SMART Utility at Apple OSX Downloads ). This can be done from the other Mac while the MBP is in TDM. If the drive passes and you can off-load some of the load, then a directory repair utility like DiskWarrior might be worth a try.
However DiskWarrior is US$100 and you can get a new 500GB SATA 2.5" hard drive for less than that. The advantage to disk Warrior is that it's easier to install in an MBP than a new hard drive.

Lenovo U410 - HDD died

I have a Lenovo U410. The HDD is dying. I want to replace it with an SSD. Here are the problems:
1 - I try to enable BIOS and save my changes? When I boot up again? nothing.
2 - I replaced the HDD with an SSD - black screen.
3 - I cannot access BIOS, and when I install the BIOS update? it still doesn't work.
4 - I am at my end and about to throw this thing into the trash.

Reinstall Elements after HDD died

I purchased Elements 7 some time ago, to go with my XP setup, but did not register it with Adobe; thinking that I would soon move to Windows 7 so would upgrade to the latest Elements which would probably not work on Xp.
However I have decided to stay with XP for the moment even though the current setup seems to have been corrupted wiping out my Elements 7 installation among everything else; the other Elements 7 installation is on my laptop. I could not get the Windows XP to repair so have had to do a complete reinstall of XP; this now seems to be working but of course wiped all the installed software.
Will I be able to install Elements 7 on my resetup XP machine even though I have previously used two instalations already, one of which was on the "deceased" Windows XP setup?

Late last night I got my Xp machine setup in Windows; left it doing 72 updates!
Later today I will load in PSE 7 and go to my backup to load in my catalogues.

If I had PSE 9 and my Windows died so that I could not deactivate PSE 9 how would I get another install, having already used the first two?

I think the hardrive died on me... (Can anyone help confirm)

I think the Hardrive (80Gb) in my 17inch G4 1,5Ghz powerbook died on me.
When I try to restart it doesn´t go beyond the grey screen, then it shuts off again. There is no sound of the disk starting up either.
And when I start it from the OSX Start-up DVD and try to reinstall the OS, It doesn´t locate any disk to install to.
Just before this happened, a game that I play frequently (Medal of Honor: Breakthrough) failed to start because it couldn´t locate some files, also the disc utility would take forever to verify the disk, but when it finally finished it claimed it to be ok.
Luckily I decided to back up all my personal data, when I got the above symptoms, so all my stuff is savfe on dvds.
1) Now before I purchase a new harddrive, is there anything else I should try first?
2) And secondly, when I buy a new harddrive can I buy a larger one than the 80Gb that came with the powerbook (Will the internal stuff support it?)
3) What is the appropriate type of drives that will fit (This I will probably find on google, but since I am here I am throwing it in...)

Yes, this should be no problem. Look at http://www.ifixit.com (or any other website) for DIY guides of how to replace the harddisk and also find some offers for harddisks suited to your computer.

Ick.. think my battery died? not even a year later.

I've had my laptop hooked up next to my pc for a few weeks (bout 2) plugged into the AC outlet. Not a problem at all.
Always had a green light...
So this morning I go to unplug it to bring it into work with me, and bram it shuts off. Odd... replug it in, hrm.. check the little LED indicator on the bottom of the battery... showing as dead.. even though the adapter shows it as charged.. Works fine with adapter just not with battery.
Leopard shows my battery as "not charging" however.
Think my battery is kaput. Battery shows 75 cycles.. charge remaining 0.. fully charged no.. chargng no.. full charge capacity.. 0.. battery health poor.
Is it dead jim? I am under warranty so i'm not concerned really, but I find it odd it died this way. Going to try resetting the usual first.

No charge after only 85 cycles sounds like a dead battery or a "stuck" charging circuit not letting it charge. Try [resetting the SMC|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319] and [resetting the PRAM|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238] and see if that gets the charger to go into fast charge mode (yellow/orange light on the plug LED) and the battery manages to get and hold a charge. If not, warranty replacement seems in order.
While it is considered bad to keep the portable plugged in all the time, without letting the battery exercise itself, and a battery recalibration (which carries with it a full discharge/charge cycle) is recommended every couple of month, two weeks of continuous plug-in shouldn't cause a complete battery failure, unless it was already weak from the start.

My late 2011 MBP lost its drive due to some mystery physical damage, so I popped it out and replaced it with a Crucial SSD. I thought it was weird that I couldn't reboot from my time machine backup on a WD My Book 3TB external, I had to get a friend to make a bootable Mountain Lion flash drive for me. That worked like a charm, but the problem is actually with the time machine disk... it's dead too.
What's happening is that when I plug it in it will mount for maybe 30 seconds... I can see one or sometimes both partitions and it will sometimes appear in Disk Utility, sometimes not. Sometimes the files appear on the drive, sometimes not. Whenever I try to do any action on the disk, whether its open a folder or repair permissions or whatever, the computer hangs up until it's disconnected. No matter what I do, the disk will dismount "improperly" after 1-2 minutes.
The drive itself is an ex-government USB 3.0 external. I have a spare identical drive around, so I took that apart and used its SATA hookup on my time machine drive, which didn't fix anything. This extra drive fully assembled also mounts and works fine. So that rules out the computer and the SATA connection, I think.
So what can I do to save my data short of mailing in to a recovery place? Are there any utilities that can pull data from an unmounted drive? Any tricks to keep it from dismounting? Running out of ideas here. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

This seems to be a common occurance with Western Digital external drives. More than like the physical drive inside the enclosure is fine, maybe not, but the enclosures electronics are failing. Only way to tell is to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it to your Mac with a SATA to USB adapter. If the drive is fine you will then be able to read from it and restore your Mac from it.
NOTE:
The late 2011 model and beyond can use the Apple Online Internet Recovery system. That is where you boot the system from the Apple server from over the internet. To use that you have to hold down the Command + Option/Alt + r keys at startup and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen.

HDD died, need a new one - Satellite A35-S209

I have a a35 s209 satellite (2.80GHz, 2048MB of ram) and my HD just died and took with it 4 months of my life. there is nothing like listening to the wonderous billy Holyday one sec and the next listening to the grinding suicide of an HD full of work that I had only selectivelly backed up.
I am currently in Lisbon Portugal and I need to know ASAP (as in yesterday) where I can find a new HD for my satellite and have it and windows installed with a partition. It is saturday night right now and obviously, there is no place I can call but I need to have this taken care of as of tomorrow. PLEASE HELP!

Hi JP,
You can obtain a replacement hard drive from any Computer retailer/repairer. Just make sure you get one which matches the characteristics of your existing drive with regard to physical dimensions.
You can also obtain one from many internet retailers although you will then have to wait for delivery.
