I uploaded Canon VIXIA HF R400 footage at Full HD 1080 35Mbps 60p, 1080 17Mbps, and 720 4Mbps MP4

I took the time to upload a Playlist of Full HD 35Mbps 60p, Winter Scenes 17Mbps 30p, the horrible Samsung HMX-F90 vs the Canon at 1280x720 4Mbps. So it covers the bases.
Meanwhile I hope you enjoy my efforts of what this cam can look like:

… is the ability to record in MP4 an advantage in any way for editing in FCP X? …
I dare to say: NO.
I'm lacking the 100%-in-depth-engineer-lingo knowledge, but basicly, mpeg4s main advantage is a less demand of processing power for playback.
but do you just playback?
no. you edit.
and FCPX offers optimized and proxy media to unload your Mac.
secondly, what I've read so far, h264/'AVCHD' is a much 'better', effective codec. so, in tech terms, a 28mbps AVCHD should offer a better pic than a 28mbpsMP4 ..... (aside all other criteria which affect quality)
I'm using a Pana707, an anchestor of your choice - a beast!
I'm in the middle of some editing of a show, my friends asked for a first glimpse, click here.
most shots you see are done with the Pana, the noised ones are done with a Canon DSLR 650D (wrong settings, the other guy using it had no idea …).
Before that, I used a Pana FZ38, which offered mpeg4/avchd too - made a few tests (quality control by eye, not by tool): no 'plus' for the intra-frame codec vs. inter-frame codec …
imho, the really (and only …) important factor for noticeable differences in 'quality' is cinematography, your skills in wisely applied manual settings …
PS: never mix mpeg4 and AVCHD on one media/SDcard! FCPX can not read such media …

  • How to view what I am recording on my pc - Canon Vixia HF R400

Hello. I purchased the Canon Vixia HF R400 to record arts & crafts tutorials that will be uploading on YouTube.  I would like to be able use my pc as my screen, as opposed to the the 3.0" LCD Screen on the camcorder.  Is it possible to connect the camera to my PC with some interface software or equipment?
This is all very new to me and I greatly appreciate any help provided.

this is some MAJOR BS..HUH?..It's 2015 and she cant plug her camera in to her computer?  I see Canon Adertises LIVE STREAMING through the wifi....How does she stream video live to the computer? or on the HFr50 with wifi if hers doesnt have wifi DOES CAMERA ACCESS HAVE A PC APP OR is there better options for this SOFTWARE????...Does the HFr50 do what she wants??HE SAID WHILE RECORDING. Cant she view what the camera is veiwing  like a webcam through the USB? veiw and record into some capture software? and not record on the camera at all?? How do you get the camera to be recognized as a working video capture device to use it as a webcam??? I was doing this in the over 10 years ago with a consumer sony camcorder.

  • My computer wont detect my Canon vixia hf r400

Please Help me. My computer wont detect my Canon vixia hf r400 im running windows 8 and I tried everything from installing the drivers to the USB ports, I have my ports in legacy mode and still wont detect. I have USB 3.0 ports but I can't imagine it not being backwards compatible. What can I do to get my computer to recognize it. It only detects when I have a memory card in the camcorder but that is like just having the card in a SD slot on my computer. No software that come with it will detect it either.

Put the camera into AVCHD mode before connecting it to the computer.

  • What is the premiere sequence preset for canon vixia hf r400?

I'm new to the world of editing.  I shot a project on a Canon Vixia HF R400 with all the factory presets.  Is the correct Premiere preset sequence AVCHD 1080i30 (60i)?
    Thanks!

Yes that is the correct sequence setting.

  • Canon Vixia HF R400

I have a new Canon Vixia HF R400 and I am using Premiere Elements 11. When I add video to my timeline the audio plays fine, but my video drags or stops altogether. Any suggestions?

You've written that you put your video files on an external drive.  You didn't say anything about that drive or how it is attached to your new laptop, but I suspect a major bottleneck.  Your computer may not be able to read those huge files off an external hard drive fast enough for smooth preview.
    Bill,
This is a very good point, and were I Nancy, one that I would explore.
There are two prime elements, that will affect video performance, with HDD's (internal or external): the disc's speed (both RPM and transfer speed), and then the connection type. Many externals are 5400 RPM, where at least 7200 RPM is needed for smooth playback. Next, if the connection is either USB 2.0, or FireWire 400 (IEEE-1394a), then the transfer of data will be too slow for really smooth playback, and especially with HD (High Def) material. If the connection is FireWire 800 (IEEE-1394b), it should be OK, and if USB 3.0, or eSATA, it should be good to very good.
Your computer is also new if it has Win 8 on it.  Windows 8 is new to video editing too.  The combination of Windows 8, PrE11 and editing 35Mbps files is new territory.  You chose a computer with an Intel i5 processor and 6 GB of ram.  I do not mean to be rude, but that is "mid grade" for editing "high grade" video files.  I had a similar laptop with Windows 7.  Doubling the RAM made a huge difference editing 28Mbps video files.  If you are going to do a lot of video editing, you may have to upgrade the RAM.
An i5 will struggle with HD material w/ the H.264 CODEC, even without that high 35Mbps Bit-Rate, as H.264 takes a lot of CPU power to process. The only way around that is by having a very fast CPU, or more of them.
With Win7-64, 4GB of RAM is just about enough to run the OS, with almost nothing left over for programs, and especially an intense operation, such as video-editing. Six GB is certainly better, but I have not seen any benchmarks on RAM with Win8, so do not know if it's resources usage is equal to Win7, or perhaps a bit more. I recommend 12 - 16GB RAM as about the minimum for video editing on a 64-bit OS. This will cut back on the OS's need to rely on slower Virtual Memory, when running a program, like PrE.
Also, with a new computer, unless it was home-built, or built specifically by someone, who knows about video-editing, will have tons of bloatware - programs that might seem neat, but load at bootup, and sap resources, often getting in the way of the utilization of the computer's resources for video-editing.
Some very useful programs, like real-time scanning anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-anything, can really get in the way, keeping a video-editing program from being able to work, unobstructed. When doing video-editing, I turn all of those off, and just do not have an Internet presence, and do not check my e-mails. I only will do that, after the editing session. When I get a new computer, even if custom built for me, the first thing that I do is remove any utilities, etc., that I will not need to run, from the boot loading with MSCONFIG in the Services, and Startup Tabs. I can still run them, when I need them, but do not want them running in the background. Then, before I start the editing session, I turn OFF Norton, StopZilla, and anything else, that is basically protective, but will not be useful, when I am editing. When done, I turn those back on, or just reboot. I want to diminish the CPU cycles, the RAM access, etc., to the minimum, so that most resources are available for my NLE (Non Linear Editor) program.
Thank you for taking the time to offer some great tips and observations. Nancy will benefit from those.

  • Canon Vixia HF R400 - USB Mass Storage?

I recently purchased a Canon Vixia HF R400 and was wondering if there is a way to make the camera appear as a USB mass storage device (like an external hard drive or flash drive).
When I plugged in the camera using the provided USB cable to a Debian (Squeeze) system, Shotwell Photo Manager appears as an option but it never successfully gets any data.
I've looked through the manual but found no reference to USB mass storage.  Am I limited to Windows/Mac for accessing the files via USB?  That would sad, as I have neither available to me at home.
    Thanks in advance!

    FYIGMO63:  I'm using Linux -- Debian (Squeeze). I don't own a Windows nor a Mac system.
I've seen mention of other models of camcorders where the user is apparently asked to select their USB mode, but my camcorder doesn't seem to prompt for that.  I poked around the settings menus as well and didn't find any where to specify USB connection mode.
Just so that I'm looking in the right place, could you give me an example for how you would do that on your camcorder (and what model you have)?
It would REALLY be nice if a CANON representative could look at this thread and tell me what I might be doing wrong to mount the camcorder as a USB Mass Storage device ... or if it's even possible under Linux.
I have 6 days left to return it at BestBuy, which I'd like to do if I can confirm that this is not possible for me, as I mentioned above, I have no Windows nor Mac computers here so I would need a generic USB Mass Storage solution that works in Linux.
    Thanks!

  • Canon Vixia HF R400 User Interface Demos

I also had fun recording (with a SONY that makes autofocus noise!) some GUI of the Canon Vixia HF R400. It's feature-rich (197pg PDF manual). Once you play around with it it makes sense and is fun to use. The Edit icon should be 'Delete' in the Indexes becuse that's all it does. The pen and stamp mode is fun. But it begs the question. It has a feature that allows the toolbar to be hidden like a toggle swutch. Why isn't there one on the main cluttered GUI? Anyway I hope you enjoy my efforts :

  • Canon Vixia HF G10 Footage Request

    Hello All,
I'm thinking of investing in 2 Canon Vixia HF G10 camcorders.  Before I do I would like to demo some of the footage on my computer.
Is there anyone out there who owns a Canon Vixia HF G10 camcorder that can send me some sample footage:  MXP Mode, 60i ?
Any comments/experiences on this camcorder would be helpful as well.  I'd like to get two, 4 of the bigger batteries, 2 chargers, and 4 32GB cards.
    Thanks,
    Erik

I love this camera.  I do have one gripe and that is the viewfinder.  I am used to shooting with an xl h1 for work and it has a nice big viewfinder.  The other day I was hiking and tried to get a shot of an eagle in the sky and could not track it looking through the small view finder and light was leaking in too.  The fold out LCD is hard to work with in the bright light. I’m currently looking for a fix for that problem.  But beside that it is a good solid camera in most all conditions.  I shot some video at night over Christmas and it came out pretty well considering there was little light.
I have been using batteries by Wasabi Power I got at amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004THA2OE/ref=oh_o02_s00_i00_details
And they seem to work very well I have been getting about two hrs of use out of each one.
The audio is awesome too.  Use both an external and on board microphone and for the most part I have been using the onboard without getting any machine noise from the cam because everything is solid state.
I looks like I cannot attach a video file for an example, but I can tell you this that the lower res FXP is what I have been using and it work great.

  • Canon Vixia HF R400 Stops Recording?

    Hello!
For some reason, my Canon HF R400 Camcorder (probably a week old) stops recording in the middle of recordings.
This has happened to me multiple times.
Today, I was recording a Piano cover, and it stopped recording around 2 minutes into it! I didn't even know until I watched it later on.
I tried it again, with the same result.
I read that it could be some sensor overheating, but the cam isn't turning off; It's just stopping the recording. Anyone know why?
    Thanks!
    Sahil

Same problem here.  After approximately 20minutes of recording it will stop and start a new recording all it's self.
    Any ideas?

  • Canon Vixia HF20 AVCHD footage - Do I need to backup the originals

    Hi folks.
I have a Canon HF20 HF20 which records in AVCHD. I always import footage into new events on iMovie 09 at "original size".
    My questions:
    1. Does iMovie cause any degrading in the quality of the movie clips when importing/converting them?
    2. Do I need to backup the CANON folder as well which contains all the data for the AVCHD footage or are those files the SAME quality as the iMovie ones once imported?
    3. a little unrelated: am I better off (quality-wise) recording in 1080 30p or the camera's default 1080 60i?

I suggest before doing anything else, I make a "Disk Image" of the camera contents. In fact, I save those copies in two places.
Use Disk Utility, located in Applications/Disk Utilities to create disk images.
I use the default settings for the image file: compressed, no encryption (none).
I then work from the disk image rather than from the camera (double click it, and it turns into a pseudo disk mounted on the desktop which is indistinguishable from the actual camera).
With iMovie, you may have to select Import from Camera, although in most cases, if the pseudo disk is mounted on the desktop when iMovie is launched, it will be recognized automatically.
I have copied the resulting data both back into the camera and onto a flash-drive. Both work as you'd expect. For example, I can plug the flash drive into a PS3, and it thinks the camera is plugged in.
Note that my Canon HF10 format is FAT32, which is preserved by the disk image builder.
Once you have this copy of the raw camera data, you can always return to it. It also takes up minimum possible storage space, unlike the results of iMovie import.

  • Does a Canon VIXIA HF R400 have Firewire capability?

I'm just wondering so I can use it on a program called iStopmotion for Mac. If it doesnt have it, I'm willing to pay $500 for a camera that does. Thank You!

    The specs found here:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/consumer_camcorders/vixia_hf_r400#Specifi...
mention high-speed USB but not FireWire.

  • Computer wont detect my Canon vixia hf r400

I have windows 7 and the computer won't recognize the canon camera. It's in avchd mode and still nothing. I tried it on my laptop also and nothing. I switched out several usb cables and still nothing. What do I need to do? I can only playback on the device.

    Playboyesquiere,
When connecting the camcorder to a computer via a USB cable, if the camcorder is not recognized by the computer, please check the following points.
Remove and reconnect the USB cable, and then turn on the camcorder again.
Connect the USB cable to the computer properly.
    - If there is more than one USB terminal on the computer, try to connect the USB cable to the other USB terminals.
    - Disconnect any USB devices other than the camcorder, keyboard, and mouse.
    - Connect the camcorder and the computer directly with a USB cable. Operation using USB hubs is not guaranteed.
    - If software is running in the background, exit them and connect the camcorder again.
    CAUTION
When the camcorder is connected to a computer:
    - Do not open the memory card slot cover and do not remove the memory card.
    - Do not access, change or delete any of the camcorders folders or files directly from the computer as this may result in permanent data loss. Always use only the supplied software to save your recordings on the computer and, if necessary, to transfer back previously saved video files to the camcorder.
Observe the following precautions while the ACCESS indicator is on or flashing. Failing to do so may result in permanent data loss.
    - Do not open the memory card slot cover.
    - Do not disconnect the USB cable.
    - Do not turn off the camcorder or the computer.
    - Do not change the camcorders operating mode.

  • Importing Canon Vixia hf m301 video in full hd

i was very disapointed that i can't just look at the videos from finder, but i was able to download the videos in imovie. unforchunately it ended up in 960 × 540, and i want it in full hd. any ideas?

If you still have these clips on your camera, import it to iMovie again, and this time choose Full rather than Large in the import options. Save it to a different event. Once all is well, you can delete the first event.
An even better plan is to go to the Import Screen and choose "Create Archive". This will make an exact copy of what is on your camera, so you can then import to iMovie or to Final Cut Pro from the archive. Then you can erase your camera.

  • Best setting for Canon VIXIA HF R21 for YouTube

I am looking for the best or most optimal setting for shooting video with my Canon VIXIA HF R21 camera.
I am using a MacBook Pro laptop and Adobe Premiere Elements 10.
My goal is to produce the best quality videos for a "YouTube" channel. The videos will be for a teenage car show shot outdoors and narrated.
    The current DEFAULT settings are:
    Recording Mode = SP, 1440x1080
    Bitrate = 7Mbps
    Codec = MPEG4-AVC/H.264
    Frame Rate = 60i
    Digital Image stabilization = standard
Here are possible "alternative selections" - please let me know if any of these settings are better than the Default settings for YouTube.
    Change Recording Mode to
    1. MXP = 1920x1080 @ 24Mbps
    2. FXP = 1920x1080 @ 17Mbps
    3. XP+ = 1440x1080 @ 12 Mbps
    Change Frame Rate to
    1. PF30
    Digital image stabilization
    1. Dynamic
    2. Standard
    3. Off
I will use Adobe Premiere Elemebnts 10 to upload the final edited video - what setting are the best upload compression settings if I want to upload for the ebst quality?

BillFlorida, I'm not sure what you're not getting here. Have you tried any of the things we've suggested?
There are two settings you need to worry about. One is your PROJECT setting. That must match your original footage, as I've indicated. If it doesn't, you're going to get poor performance and video quality.
The second setting is your OUTPUT setting. That's the only setting YouTube is interested in. If you use the output settings I linked you to above -- working from a project that's been set up properly -- you will get excellent YouTube results.
    Try it. You'll see.
You'll also see, if you experiment a bit, that there's virtually no difference in the quality of FXP and MXP -- especially if you're going to display your video online. The important thing is that your PROJECT settings match that 1920x1080 AVCHD footage and that you use the YouTube output settings recommended in the FAQs.
    Try it. You will see.

  • Canon Vixia hfm31 videos (MTS) won't import into Premiere Pro CS5

I have a lot of footage on a Canon Vixia HFM31 HD Camcorder. Yesterday I tried to import into Premiere and got an error message saying the MTS format was not supported.
The clips DID import with iMovie.
Do I need to purchase a converter from a 3rd party vendor to be able to get MTS footage from the Vixia into Premiere. Seems strange that it worked so seamlessly with iMovie.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Deanna

When you open the New Sequence dialog, does it look like this:
...or do you have significantly fewer presets available? If you have less, your installation has been reverted to trial mode--this is a problem that occurs after updating Premiere. If so, the only way to get back to full operating status is to reinstall the software.
Specifically, what you need to do is:
Deactivate your installation (Help > Deactivate)
    Uninstall Premiere/Production Premium/Master Collection. Reboot.
Download and run the Adobe CS5 Clean Tool. Reboot.
Repeat step 3 at least once more, preferably two or three more times
Reinstall and reactivate Premiere, and then update
It's a pain, indeed, but it's the only way to get back up and running.
If, however, you do have all the presets, give us some more detail on the files and how you're trying to import them.
