I gave my old ipod to a friend, but we are both unsure if he can use it. I reased all of my songs, so it was blank. HIs wife has itunes but he is afraid to plug it in for fear that it will somehow affect her ipod. Do I need to somehow find the serial # (no idea how to do that) so he can register th ipod on itunes?
He does not need to register it and it will not affect her iPod. Just don't connect both of them at the same time. The serial number is on the iPod and when he connects it to his computer he can also click on the iPod in iTunes, move to the Summary tab to the right and the serial number will be displayed.

Unless you want to go through the full routine of deleting the Apple ID and any personal information...and keep in mind, all content is owned by the Apple ID used to download it so nothing on there can be updated.
Go to Settings > iTunes and App Stores > Apple ID and remove the ID.
Go to Settings > iCloud or any other place you will have links to your own account and remove the links.
Go to Settings > Mail, Calendars and Contacts and remove all account information.
Go to Settings > Messages and remove all account information
Go to Settings > WiFi and remove all account information.

i am about to upgrade my ipod and want to give my old ipod nano to a friend. what do i need to do so thay can use it on their computer and create their own itunes account?
Connect it to iTunes, select the Nano in the "devices" column and click "Restore". The warning window you get will ask you if this is what you really want to do.
Your very lucky friend will essentially have it in the same condition as if she bought it new.
One more thing: if you registered it in My Support Profile, make sure to un-register it. Only you can do that. Have your friend register it under her own Apple ID.

You can copy any purchased items that aren't already on your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. If you want to copy everything over to the new iPad then you can back up the old iPad by right-clicking (command-clicking on a Mac) the iPad under Devices when connected to your computer's iTunes, and you can then restore that backup onto the new iPad.
When you are happy that eveything has copied over you can log out of you account on the old iPad by tapping on your id in Settings > Store and then wipe its content via Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Setings. -
I want to upgrade my iOS 4 to 5 on my Ipod Touch but I no longer have the original computer I used to sync with so it keeps saying I will loose all of my apps and stuff on my new computer..... Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
Also:
If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone and use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
You can also wipe the iOS device by installing the FindMyiPhone app on another iOS device and using that app to wipe the device. -

IF (and only if) the iPod was previously configured with the "Find my..." function, you can attempt to send a message to the device. If an honest person has located the iPod, he/she will presumably return it to your daughter. Otherwise, she's out of luck.
Change your iTunes (Apple ID) password along with any other password that was stored in the iPod. If any passwords are associated with credit cards, contact the CC company and get your card replaced (with a new number). If any passwords are associated with your bank or any savings institution, contact them also and discuss approprate action with them.
The "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief. All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself. This requires action before the device is lost/stolen. If the device has significant personal information, it should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries. -

What I would like to know is how do I get to keep my stuff different from my husbands, there are things that we both like and things that we don't. I dont want him to delete off my old IPOD if it means i have to keep installing again. I dont want to set up a new account because we want to share music and videosYou'll notice that each iPad is identified by name. See image below. Highlight the appropriate iPad and configure iTunes the way that you wish. The second image below is an example for apps. You'll see something similar for movies, TV shows, etc.
The only minor problem is app updating. IF you choose to do it from inside iTunes, it's a minor nuisance. Each app is permanently associated with whatever Apple ID was originally used to obtain it. If you're logged in to the wrong ID, you'll need to log out and back in again. On the bright side, if you update from the iPad, all you need is the password for the correct ID. The iPad takes care of the rest.
Mail is a special case. I use Mac Mail and the setup is pretty much automatic. What are you using? -
My old ipod classic will charge when I plug it it in but my computer will no longer recognize that it is plugged in and Itunes will not pop up. Is it time to retire this 5 year old classic?

Thanks in advance for any help. This really is important to me.A "1st Gen ipod" did not have photo capability, so it must be at least an iPod Photo (4th gen iPod) or later. The information I provide below applies, as long as your iPod is NOT an iPod touch.
The iPod's screen is quite small, so when you sync photos to it, iTunes converts them to a special format that reduces the resolution of the photo to fit the small screen. This saves storage space used on iPod. If you were to transfer the image back to your computer, the low resolution would make it look horribly pixilated when blown up to computer display size. I think there are third-party utilities that can convert and transfer the images files back to the computer, but there is no way to do it using iTunes.
If you used a specific setting when syncing the photos to the iPod, then you can retrieve them at the original resolution. The setting is on the Photos tab for the iPod, in iTunes when you select the iPod in the sidebar, under DEVICES. It is a checkbox that says Include full-resolution photos. If that setting was enabled when you synced the photos to the iPod, then you will be able to retrieve them at the original full resolution.
What you do is Enable disk use, which is a setting on the Summary tab. This makes the iPod's storage appear as a "disk" to the system. You can then use your computer's OS to open the iPod, like it was a flash drive, to find a folder called Photos folder inside. In that folder, you can find any full resolution image files that were previously synced, which you can copy to your computer's hard drive. But again, that Include full-resolution photos setting needed to be enabled at the time you synced the photos to the iPod. -
