I5 2400 Voltage problem and undervoltaging

Using MSI Z68MA-G43 Mobo and i5 2400 CPU
This Cpu stock speeds @3.1 and turbos up to @3.4
@3.4 voltage should be less than 1.15V in normal circumstances. If not temperature goes higher which is my case. My CPU draws much more voltage than it should. it draws 1.26v @3.4 according to Core-Temp and a bit less according to CPU-Z and HW monitor. Temperatures are very high. Load temps in gaming are almost up to 80 degrees in summer. Now a bit better since it got cold it is around 75 C. Prime 95 can't be run because it gets dangerously hot if I run it. Same applies for intel burn test. I tried the test however it got too hot. I shut it down not to damage the CPU.
All happens due to high voltage.
I don't know what makes it use so much voltage. Bad MOBO or bad CPU chip... One of them must be faulty.
Anyway I want to try undervolting my CPU. And bad news... There is no undervolting option in my BIOS.
I can only add voltages to default voltage. I can not subtract any value. Or I have the auto option which I use now.
I requested a mod to my BIOS in BIOS section but I am not sure they ll make it.
Do you have any ideas what can be done in this case ?
My CPU is damaged day to day due to high voltage and high temperatures. I am sure its lifespan is decreasing drastically.

Those voltages are well with-in safe operating numbers.
Have you tried re-applying the thermal paste?
How bad is your case?
I suppose you could try setting the vdroop to a very low level if it is available on that board, but I think that is only on higher end boards.

  • Voltage query, and another problem

Just bought a Neo this weekend, and for the most part, I've been having fun with it, and it's been a good board.  However, I have one problem, and one question.  Question first:
In the bios, it seems that my VCore voltages go from like 1.35 to 1.55.  Now, with my A64 3400+, the default voltage is 1.50, which doesn't leave me much headroom to up the VCore.  I've seen in several other locations, however, that the voltage should be able to go up to around 1.7V, and I don't see how that's possible.  I'm wondering what I'm missing, and where I can up the voltage properly (because the CPU will run at 2.4GHz and is almost stable at 1.55V, but I'd like to push it a bit farther).
    Now, the problem:
My Firewire port seems to be Code 10 (Device cannot start), and I can't seem to find any way to get it to work 100% of the time.  Sometimes uninstalling it and rebooting fixes it (I have a 20GB Firewire drive that I use, else I wouldn't care).  Is this a known issue, and if so (or even if not), how do you fix it?  I'd rather not go get a PCI solution if I can help it, but I need some sort of Firewire connection for the HD (it's just a storage drive, nothing critical to the OS).
Overalll, as I said, I love the board (bought it do to a recommend from someone at AMD), but these two small issues pretty much have me stumped.
I did search through the forums and didn't seem to find anything that would help me out, but if I missed something somewhere, please refer me to the proper post and I'll be happy to read through it.    Thanks!

    Dear All
    Hello,
    anybody can help me?
In spite of nearlly10 days i am searchig to find any labview 2010 program for voltage sweep and measure current that works with RS-232, i has not able finde anything exept some exapmle that read single and multiple data. I has tried to learm labview and changed some prorgram from gpib to RS-232 but i couldn't.
In another attempt i find a good "votltage sweep and measure current" VI that work with RS-232 in labview 5.1.1. i converted it to 2008 but it need to old driver (ke24xx.dll) and dont work in my labview 2010 and I could't find old driver.
in these 10 days, my project on thesis has been stopped and i couldn't do anything for our keithley.
    Please helpe...
in following i attached these files:
1-first it is voltage sweep that works with GPIB
2-Vi that i change gpib port to visa (rs232) that i don't know why it dosen't work.
3-it is Vi related to "votltage sweep and measure current" that works with RS-232 but need to old dirver so i can not use it.
4-SubVi needed to run program of 3 (but there is no driver for these subVIs) has been atached in reply post of this post
if any body has this program ("votltage sweep and measure current" that work rs-232) please send for me

The first time you asked this exact same question, you were given the way to get the driver and told that one of the examples does exactly what you want to do. You have chosen to disreregard this and pursue other options for these close to 10 days. If your thesis is stalled, that is really your own fault for not listening to the answers you were given. I have no idea why you would do this but I would suggest you go back to the original thread, reread it. and if you want further help, explain what the problem with the NI driver is.

    You changed processor recently?
What is telling you about the voltage? And, why did you wonder about the voltage?
What RAM memory have you got?
Clear CMOS. Pull power-cable out first.
    Thanks for replying fredrik.
    I didn't change the anything.
I used CPU-Z to know the voltage & I wonder about the voltage because it's high for my CPU.

  • Macintosh Plus endless reboot (voltage problem?)

    Hi all,
I bought a Macintosh Plus about an year ago: for the first months, everything was perfect, until something happened: the Mac continued rebooting. Thinking it was a dead PRAM battery, I ordered it from U.S. and replaced it, but the problem wasn't solved: I managed to know it was a voltage problem. So I tried to fix the 5v line on the hole on the right side (after checking the low voltage from the floppy drive port, in fact it was 4.5 instead of 5). The REAL problem is: the voltage hole fixes not only the 5v line, but also the 12v one, so when I bring the 5v to his normal state the 12v line becomes 13v if not more (Apple says it should be between 11.90 and 12.75). How can I fix the 5v line without "affecting" the 12v one? It's a bit complicated, but I would be glad to re-explain this a thousand times. Thank you all,
    tommijazz91
P.S. PLEASE show your e-mail if you want pm: in the previous post I couldn't contact a user because of this! Thanks.

I have a few Plus machines, the power supply is fun to fix. There is a very good tutorial on how they work, pm me and I'll send you a copy.
Basically, the power supply is all linked so adjusting one rail (12V or 5V) changes them all, there is no separate adjustments possible. Also be aware the EHT on the CRT is derived from the 12V rail so turning up the 5V rail will also increase the very hight voltage on the screen which is not a good idea.
There may be a component failure on the power supply, I have repaired many, the doc I refer is superb.

  • CPU Voltage problem...anyone??

hey all, i'm not sure if i have a voltage problem here.  should my cpu voltage be at 1.5?  it currently runs at 1.35 by default.  This is in my Neo4 Platinum board.
    Update:
I went to increased the voltage to 1.4 via CPU VID (in bios) however, CPU-Z is showing my voltage as 1.3 which is lower than before.  is this correct?  Also, watching the voltage readout in CPU-Z i'm noticing the flucuation between 1.36 to 1.408 after setting my CPU VID to 1.4 in bios..  is that ok?
    ...anyone?
    -free

Just using CoreCenter my 12v is a steady 12.14, 5v at 5.05, 3.3 at 3.33 but vcore which should be the steadiest runs between 1.37 and 1.42 with jumps or drops of up to .04. Prior to wed it never made it past 1.39 so maybe it will even itself out at 1.4  +- .02. My other MSI board a KT6V with a 2500 Barton runs a steady 1.63 with a cheaper PSU and a slight oc and the combined price of the 3 is around what I paid for the neo4 board. Maybe I'm expecting to much to think that if you pay more for something the quality should be better. (this might be old news but look at the class action suit against ABIT for using a defective capacitor on their boards http://www.abitsettlement.com )Quote from: Apple renegade on 18-February-05, 01:25:52
@home I have a good Volt meter. It cost me more then my mobo. So don't expect the world out the accuricy
Apple that is like comparing apples and oranges  there is a big difference in a volt meter which has to handle a large range of voltages and amps and a dedicated chip on a motherboard. The CPU is designed so that at 1.4 volt and a given frequency it gives you a signal strength at the transistor that determines a 1 or 0 bit. "undervolt"only increases the chances of bad data if there is a weak transistor and raising the voltage is only needed if the signal strength drops from the increase in frequency.

  • 780 SLI - "Voltage Limit" and "Utilization Limit" Flags

    Hello,
I'm trying to pinpoint an issue I'm having with my video cards, and wanted additional advice before I make purchases. My questions will be: is there anything else I should try? Is there anything I can do to pinpoint the problem?
    My setup:
    Core i7-950 - OC'd to 3.84 ghz
    ASUS P6X58D-E - mobo
2x MSI n780 TF in SLI
    Corsair 850AX Power Supply
Also drawing power: 5x Hard Drives; Typically only 2 are running at one time (OS RAID), the other 2 are a backup RAID I only use to archive stuff, and the last is a Linux drive that Windows doesn't even see
    Issue:
Most games run without issue; but Metro Last Light is unstable. I run at 1920x1080, Advanced Physx, 2x AA, Very High quality and Very High Tessalation. There are times when I get 60 FPS (V-Sync); however, there are times that the performance drops to 6 or 14 FPS. When it is at 14 FPS it is still playable, but 6 FPS is terrible. I use Afterburner's OSD to monitor GPU Usage, Temp, and FPS. When it is at 6 FPS, it is only using 12% of either GPU at most.
While investigating, I noticed a few things in Afterburner that stand out when this occurs.
    1) The Core Clock drops down (throttling?)
    2) The "Voltage Limit" and "Utilization Limit" flags are both set on both GPUs.
    My thoughts:
I'm thinking that my Power Supply isn't quite big enough. I thought this may become an issue when I first bought the two cards (I was previously running 2 460's on SLI, then upgraded to 780s).
My question is if the video cards are pulling the power supply's limit - will this trip the two flags? I would have thought the Voltage Limit would indicate the voltage going too high; but power supply being strained should drop voltage.
I have not changed any of the voltage settings to the card - they are whatever MSI has them set to for the stock OC.
If I buy another PSU, I don't like to go cheap - so it will definitely be beefy. Before I drop a few hundred on it, I want to be sure the Power Supply is the issue. Is there anything else you guys/gals can think of that may be an issue? Any tests I can do to confirm?
The new Thief seems to run fine; also Kombustor runs without issue (but only runs on one GPU - does not SLI). I have no other stability issues - the PC doesn't randomly shut down or reboot. It just seems to be Metro Last Light - but Metro is also the most demanding game that I own.
Any assistance or feedback will be greatly appreciated!
    Edit - Update:
I tried disabling SLI to see if the issue would improve by only loading 1 GPU. No difference at all - no better or worse. Same flag (just only on the one GPU), same exact FPS 6.4.
I installed GPU-Z to be able to monitor core voltage. It normally runs at about 1.1 volts. However, once the issue occurs it is as low as 0.875 volts. Seems to confirm the PSU may be an issue. Any feedback or additional confirmation is still greatly appreciated!

Apologize for the bump - I could not see a way to edit the original post. However, I wanted to make sure this information is available in case others had similar issues.
I found an even better solution. NVIDIA has an updated "Physx" driver - you have to download it from the NVIDIA site (i.e. Other NVIDIA drivers, not GeForce). Look for Physx version 9.13.1220 or later. 9.13.1220 was release on 1/27/2014 - but an older version is included in the most recent GeForce drivers for some reason.
The patch notes from Physx 9.13.1220 specifically state:
*Changes & fixed issues in this release
**Fixes a bug that caused the Metro Last Light to not be GPU accelerated on some systems.
With this software update I can enable Advanced Physx and max settings in Last Light and still run at 60 FPS.

  • K8NGM2-FID CPU core voltage Fluctuations and instabilities-- Bad caps!!?

I Have K8NGM2-FID bought 6 months ago and started having stability issues since last month.
    Here is my configuration
K8NGM2-FID ver 2.0 Bios 3.73 now, used to be 3.5, experimented both, but did not help
    Onboard video, Onboard Lan, firewire
    Memory : 512 x 2 Corsair DDR400 in dual channel mode at 2.65v 64MB to Video
    CPU: AMD64 X2 3800+
    HDD WD 160GB SATA150
    Winfast TV2000 Expert Tv Tuner
Drivers, tried many version ( currently using latest Nvidia Video, MB drivers)
Now, the description of the problem.
System suddenly hangs with or without load, intermittenly. Nothing to do what we are working on. Even when System is idle.
Hangs means, it could happend two ways,
    1. simply it would not respond, screen simply freezes,
    2. sometimes, you simply see horizantal lines on monitor( Typically happens when cpu core voltage drops below it can handle). I know this because
I am using RMClock on my Turion laptop, and when we try to find lowest stable voltage we see this behaviour.
Now, some other observation,  from the day one CPU core voltage has been fluctuating a lot. Used to fluctuate anywhere between 1.37v to 1.304v( at default 1.35v).  But still has been stable. Ran 24hour prime95, so no problems.
Recently I am seeing voltage fluctuations is more, as low as 1.28v to 1.39v at default 1.35v, so I tried RMCLock and raised the voltage to 1.4v, but it seems that did not help much.
Now, As per the MSI PCALert4  voltage is changing anywhere from 1.28v to 1.38v, but also I get core voltage field empty( that is right no CPU core voltage shown) and alarm sounds. It seems, CPU does not get voltage at all and gets very low voltage for a second or so.
Things I tried,  Changed the powersupply, changed the Memory, but no use. I am lucky enough to have exact same configuration I built for a friend. So, I checked voltages on his PC and I do not see this behaviour.
Now, I ran out of options.... any idea anyone had similar problem, and if they solved?
Now, here are PCAlert 4 images
    http://img171.imageshack.us/my.php?image=128vatdef135sp5.jpg
    http://img256.imageshack.us/my.php?image=novoltageif5.jpg
    http://img406.imageshack.us/my.php?image=132vredbi3.jpg
Also, another weird behaviour with Bios, even when I change setting in bios, they did not take effect, even loading default does not help, so I have to press CMOS reset button.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the quick reply.
First to clarify, these things has been developed a monrh ago only. It has been fine for more than 5 months.
1). Yes Memory is insalled in closest DIMM sockets to CPU,
2). I think you mean mem voltage. The memory I have is Corsair Value series and it even runs fine DDR400 at 2.55v, but I bumped it to 2.65v and also tried 2.75v ( 2.65v is typical I have been using with this MB).
3). Memory has been tested with Memtest for 24 hours and ran Dual Prime95 for 24 hours when system is assembled.
Also swapped from another PC I built for my friend with same components( same corsair value series memory) Also tested my memory on his PC, no probs. BTW I also tested my memory at 333, freezing even happens even at that speed.
4). PSU has nothing to do, because I have been monitoring all PSU rails with SPeedFan none of of the rail voltages moved at all. I even monitored with Digital Multimeter to ensure. Anyways I even tried 3 psus, one ANtec 350W smart power supply, ThemalTake 420W, Ultra 400 Watts. All have more than enough juice to power this setup. (onboard Graphics card).
5). Yes, freezing happens in simply desktop too. Nothing to do with CPU load or graphics load. It could happen even when just idling.
6). I use stock CPU cooler in Antec 1650B case with 120MM Fan running in the back( approx 50cfm) and CPU temp never exceeded 47c and MB temp typically around 28c and NB temp around 50-60c using a digital probe and 55-70c using Nvidia Monitor based on load vs no load.
7). As per Dual core patches, I applied AMD Dual Core  optimizer quite a while ago. As per the MS Patch, No I have not applied( But I doubt it helps because it has been stable without that for all these months). I may try that.
Now, what I am trying, I  disabled CNQ, and logging Core voltage fluctuation with speedfan( no monitoring).
as of yesterday night the core voltage was varying from 1.28v to 1.39v( I think that is insane 110mv fluctuation in CPU core voltage!!?) at default CPU voltage of 1.35v. BTW it has nothing to with CPU load, all these logs generated when it was idle. I remember fluctuation even when MB was new, but lowest I observed was 1.304v.
SOmehow, I suspect VRM is pretty bad on this MB.
Anyways, see the response and let me know if you think I am missing somethings. Appreciate your help.

Meaghan, I already responded to your topic. Plus, it is simply not good to bury your post in other people's topics, and just for the future, if you have a problem without a good answer, don't post what has already been said in a thread. I know, the discussions take a little getting used to, but it is easy to get the hang of it after a couple of visits. You'll get it sooner or later. I know you will.

  • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom has encountered a problem and needs to close. (ver 1.4.1)

I completed a search for this problem here and other forums, and found very useful information, however, I still need help. My laptop is an HP Pavillion dv1000, Intel Centrino, Windows XP, 1.24G of RAM; Camera is a Canon 5D, shooting JPEG only.
After a couple of weeks enjoying a vacation in the Caribbean, it was time to load all the new pics in the computer. I removed the card from my camera and using windows explorer, downloaded all pics in MyPictures folder. I created a new folder for this trip, and while I was there, I decided to reorganize several folders from previous trips. I renamed and moved folders around, deleted pictures, etc. (I believe that all the changes that I made created my problem.)
Once I finished all the changes with my folders, I launched Lightroom (ver 1.4.1) with the idea of synchronizing the folders and start working on my new pictures. After apx 8 seconds, I got the message: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.
After a google search, I found a lot of potential answers to my problem, including this one, which I tried:
"It might also be worth trying a temporary test catalog, just to see whether it's specific to that catalog. To do so, go to File menu > New Catalog and create a new catalog somewhere easy - Desktop perhaps - and just try importing a few photos into that test catalog and see if you can get it to freeze. I'm wondering if the catalog's been damaged slightly by that initial unexpected close, and if so, we'll see if we can get that sorted out for you."
I did exactly that (created a test catalog) and I don't get the error. I am not clear on what does that mean. Could you help me understand it? What do I need to do to use my old catalog? Is it damaged? How can I fix it? Did I loose all the work that I did in my previous pictures?
If I go back to my original catalog, I still get the error.
Thank you in advanced for your assistance.
    Tony

    Tony,
    Here's something you might try:
Create a new, empty catalogue and try File->Import from catalog... and specify your broken one as input. With luck the damage will be left behind.
If that doesn't work, try deleting or renaming your preferences file. Look here for its location.
And if that doesn't work, try deleting or renaming your presets folder. See that same website for details.
Let us know how you make out.

  • Adobe Audition has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I have been using Audition 2.0 on this computer for quite some time and suddenly now when I open it, I get the cryptic error dialogue:
"Adobe Audition has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.  For more information about this error, click here."
When I click for more information, it's something useless like:
AppName: audition.exe    AppVer: 2.0.5306.2    ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0   Offset: 65726168
Nothing on my computer has changed.  There are no viruses.  I have not added any new audio plug-ins.  I am completely up to date with all critical Windows XP SP3 updates and none have been downloaded and installed recently anyway.
I searched the knowledgebase and found a document that suggesting many things to try.  I tried them all, including running the Windows hard disk "check disk" tool with options to fix file system errors and recover bad sectors. I also defragmented the hard drive.  Lastly, I completely uninstalled Audition, then  manually deleted any remaining files, including registry entries as suggested in another knowledgebase article.
I then re-installed Audition 2.0 and it did exactly the same thing!  This it maddening.  Now it gets even more interesting.  I discovered that if I start up the
Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit that Adobe Audition installed also, then try to launch Audition from the toolkit, IT STARTS CORRECTLY!  I can then close the toolkit and use it like normal.  Weird work-around.
What the heck could possibly be going on?  Anyone have any ideas?  I've attached the error log file that is generated by the error but I doubt it will be of much help.
    Thanks!
    Steve in Chicago

stevefoobar2: I may have found a solution for you.
I had the same thing happen to me today. I was using Audition 2 this morning without any problems. But this afternoon, it started giving me the exact same error with no apparent reason. Nothing on my system had changed.
So I uninstalled it and installed Audition 3 in its place. Audition 3 continued to have the same problem that Audition 2 had, so we can assume that this is not something that was changed between versions.
But my attention was brought to the fact that you and I are both running Windows XP SP3 fully up-to-date. So I thought I'd try seeing it from the angle of a problem with Windows instead of Audition, and see if I didn't get a better result -
First, I logged on to Windows as Administrator. This may or may not be required, but you'll probably want to do it just in case (you'll see what I mean later). At this point, Audition still crashed the same way when I opened it, so I moved on to my next troubleshooting strategy -
Instead of opening Audition directly, I right-clicked the Audition icon and selected "Run as..." This may seem odd since I was already logged in as Administrator, but it proved to be the solution in my case.
In the "Run As" diolog, there are two main options: run as current user, or run as another user.
Since I was already logged in as Administrator, I could safely select the first option (run as current user). But here's the catch: selecting the first option allowed me to UNcheck the box underneath that says "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" (see the attached picture)
Audition opened without any problems when I did this.
This makes me think that one of the Windows security features suddenly decided to block something that Audition was trying to do, crashing the program in the process. By turning off this security feature, the problem was solved. And I only had to do it once. Every time afterwards, Audition has opened without any problems when I simply open it from my desktop. Perhaps Windows now remembers not to block Audition in the future.
However, I have not restarted my computer yet, or logged off as Administrator. You may need to tweak this solution if you plan to do either of these things. You may end up having to "Run as" Audition every time you restart your computer or log off. You may even need to select the SECOND option, and run the program as Administrator with the appropriate password.
Anyway, this was the only post I could find on Adobe.com concerning this problem, so I thought I'd post my solution in case it helped someone else.
