IBook insomnia solved!!

Hi!
Since I encountered sleep problems (iBook wont sleep until battery is low) some weeks ago, I tried to find a solution. Maybe my experiences can help some people here, so I post this.
First I tried the usual Mac-Voodoo, resetting nvram, pram and PMU.
(BTW While resetting the PMU the sleep LED of my iBook G3 flashes for some seconds. Is this the normal behavior?)
But at the end this solved nothing.
So first step is to find out if its a hardware or software problem. For that I booted into "safe mode" (press and hold left shift key). If the machine goes to sleep while in safe mode, it is a software problem. This was the case with my iBook.
So it had to be a software problem "aka malfunctioning daemon". So first step is to find out if it is a user related service or a system service.
For this I rebooted the machine and waited for the login screen. Since the machine has to sleep also when not logged in, I waited some minutes here.
If the machine goes to sleep mode while not logged in, the problem has to be a user service, if not a system service is responsible. In my case, the machine refused to sleep, so it has to be a system problem.
My theory was that some services tried to read/write data in short bursts so that the hard disk shows constant activity, preventing sleep mode.
To test this. I logged in and started the activity monitor.
It shows that in one second intervals some 900k of data was written to the disk. This was a constant operation, so this was likely the culprit of my problems.
Now I needed to find out which data was written. For that, I found a wonderful tool named fseventer (http://www.macs.hw.ac.uk/%7Erpointon/osx/fseventer.html). It clearly showed that inside /Library/Cache a file named com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore was created, data written and surprisingly deleted afterwards.
And thats it. Since the /Library/Cache folder can be deleted without problems (it will be restored after reboot, and probably your user icon is lost) I booted into single user mode and deleted the entire folder contents.
After some days of testing I can say that everything runs fine now.
Hopefully this small description can help others with similar problems.
regards,
Alexander

  • Ibook insomnia (it won't sleep)

I just recently installed Tiger and now my ibook won't sleep when I request it through apple menu. It will sleep for about 15 seconds and then wakes up on its own. I have checked my energy saver settings and they are set at 10min.
Additionally, when I close the lid it does the same thing sleeping for approx 15seconds and then wakes up. Any suggestions?

i was reading "Troubleshooting Mac OSX Tiger" and it suggested for sleep issues to check the console log and I did so I put my ibook to sleep with the console log open then once it woke up (after a few milliseconds) this is what came up in the log:

  • IBook Insomnia (Won't Sleep)

    Hey All,
Have an iBook G4 1.2 Ghz which is having a sleep issue. Here is what I have tried so far.
    -Reset PMU
    -http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2083671#2083671
-from this page I deleted the preference files, reboot, repair permissions no good still
-Repaired Permissions, Reboot, Installed Combo Updater 10.4.6, Repaired Permissions, Reboot. No sleep yet
I tried booting to safe mode, and even in safe mode my iBook will not sleep. I have seen some posts elsewhere that say this has been a problem with some recent Tiger point upgrades. I have no idea and any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks All

  • Lost previews in photogallery widget ibook?

Suddenly when I send a preview to my iPad of my ibook and I look at it I can't see the little photo previews anymore When looking at the foto gallery widget.
I see the little squares still but not the photo itself....
Does some else also have this problem (working with 1.1 (190) version of iBook author)

Solved my problem by restarting Ibook Author.

  • About vertical format (iBooks Author)

Hello people! This is my first entry, but not the first time I check for your support. This is because I can't figure something out, so you might help me a little.
This is my problem: some creative son of his/her mother decided to propose vertical covers for the electronic books, my guees is because of the display on the virtual shelf. You following me? VERTICAL
BUT, this creative son of his/her mother, decided to propose only horizontal designs inside the books. Am I the only crazy person who see this (HORIZONTAL)??
iBooks Author solve this problem with a large .pdf ugly thing. I think is a gorgeous thing to be able to design in both formats (call that a smart book? I think it's BRILLIANT!). But to make coherent designs, means to keep BOTH proposals similars. You following me?
So, let's think a little about proposing a vertical format (let's say you already did the horizontal format, or you just don't want to do it): who decided to make an infinite .pdf from start to end, scrolling it down?? Why can't I do the "figer thing" to change the pages like the horizontal version?
I have loose a great deal of my time trying to design correctly a vertical format book. Why? Because it was published that way, it was conceived that way, and it amaze me how difficult all the apps makes my life because of a single thing: a stupid vertical format. And I don't want to publish a .pdf, don't want it to look as an ugly .pdf, don't want it to look like the exported file wants it because it was not designed that way! And I'm in a corner, thinking about my little possibilities left.
Do I have to design my book with a crooked head and tell the people they must block their iPads in order to read it right, and to "scrool" the pages "upside down" istead of "right to left"? How ridiculous is that?
Forget about the rest of the apps: even if they allow me to design a vertical format, when I publish the illustrated book, all the elements will move, no matter how many times I block them. I have done it right and I have done it wrong (like exporting a full size page, image and text included), and it still bothers me how stupid the apps can behave. They are like incompetent employees: totally freaks me out.
Do I really have to design a new app  for a single illustrated vertical book with no interactions at all? It looks idiotic. But I might be the idiot here, though I don't think so (not this time)
Thank you very much and please forgive my english. Hope I make myself clear enough.

Already done. But on the iPad I only have a large vertical book, can't "change pages with the figer", but scrooling up to reach the bottom.
What do you mean with "satisfy both"? Landscape and portrait? (sorry, I really must check everything because of the language). Why I would disable portrait when I want it to be in that format (and luckily ONLY in that format)?
Poor KT, you look so helpless in your photo. I'm really sorry if I sound that dumb

  • I can't scroll the lists in the Purchased page in iBooks on my iPhone 4

That says it really. I go into iBooks, tap Store, then Purchased at the bottom and I have two lists, All and Not On This iPhone. Which ever of those I select I can see the first two books and most of the third, but  can’tscroll any further down - there's just no response to my finger. Oh, and I'm running iOS 5.1 and iBooks is up to date. It's been like this for a while and I keep hoping an update to iBooks will solve it, but not so far.

Try restoring your device as new and test it that way. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If it still doesnt work then you may have water dammage or just a hardware issue. Device needs to be replaced.

  • HT4059 ibooks on your mac

how can i read ibooks on my mac (macpro 2.66 quad core) 10.6.8 I have adobe digital editions installed but do not have ipod ipad iphone. i have the books on my mac but they are just greyed out when i try to open in Adobe digital editions

This has something to do with copyright. Apple could easily port the iBooks app to the Mac if it wanted to. Apple may be under a contract with some ibook publishers that prohibits use of ibooks on a Mac out of some fear that illegal copying will take place (as though it doesn't anyway).
Before I knew all of this, I bought a specialized programming manual as an ibook thinking I could use it on my Mac, which is where I need it. I've been very angry about this ever since - there was no warning I could not use it on my Mac, and reading it off my iPhone is essentially impossibly - this isn't some fluffy "page-turner" novel, it's full of diagrams, screenshots etc. that cannot be viewed properly on an iphone.
You can't read it on Adobe's software because the encryption scheme is different.
After my ibooks frustration, I investigated further and actually found a printed version of the book which cost me twice as much as the ibook but solved the problem.
I will not buy another ibook without being able to read it on a Mac.
Too bad for the publishers, as I buy a lot of books, especially technical ones.

The problem is when we create and then publish to ibooks review it can not be shown completely. How can I solve this problem?

If you are saying, that you published the book to  the iBooks review team and cannot be seem in the store.
Use your iTunes Connect account > Manage your Books to check on its status. It takes time so you need to allow a few days.
If its a problems viewing on your iPad Follow  the above advice and another option is is export your  book, open iBooks on your  Mac and drag the  book into  iBooks.
You can iTunes > add to libray and sync to your iPad.

  • [solved] iBook 300 MHz PPC and archlinux

    Hello everybody,
I just want to ask if archlinuxppc works with this IBook (300 MHz, maybe 366 and in best case 400 MHz). I'm using archlinux since about 3 years on my desktop (x64) and in the past on my old notebook (Intel 2,6 GHz 512 MB Ram) ... currently I'm trying to buy this ibook and I want to install archlinux too (since I've heard from archlinuxppc). I just want to work with it (writing, Internet, a little bit music and, if possible, watching simple movies). As I've heard, you can't compare a 300 ppc with an 300 MHz Intel computer. It seems as if a ppc is a little bit faster than an intel, isn't ist? I've worked successfully with archlinux an an 1 GHz Notebook and it worked fine. So the simple question is, how does archlinux will work in this item?

I've just bought this ibook clamshell and so I'm currently trying to install archlinuxppc on this item. But there were some problems, some of them I've already fixed, but now I'm not getting forward.
First of all was a mechanic problem, disassembling the ibook for installing a new hard disk. So the current configuration of this item is:
    300 MHz ppc processor
currently 170 MB RAM (I already ordered 512 MB Ram, so I'll get 544 MB Ram on this item very soon)
    40 GB harddisk
the first step was to download a working archlinuxppc ISO. I've got the "wrong" one, just about 30 MB for installing via ftp (2008 core dump ftp iso). But I successfully installed archlinux on an intel machine via ftp so I thought, this will be nearly the same.
Configuring the harddisk was not as easy as usual. I've always used cfdisk for preparing the harddisk, but this doesn't work in this case, so I had to use another, textbased, program. But I solved this problem after a while.
Setting the mountpoints was no problem. But there was one thing that I was worried about during the whole installation until this step. An error message appeared every 5 minutes, saying:
INIT: Id "c0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
The next step was to select the packages. At this point I recognized that I've downloaded the wrong iso image for the first time. After chosing "CD" as source for the packages setup mounted the cd from /dev/hdc in /src but was not able to find the needed packages. So I started the setup again with the help of ftp installation.
When I got to the point of selecting packages there where 3 Servers available:
    ftp://ftp.archlinuxppc.org
    ftp://xentac.net
    ftp://ftp.archlinuxfr.org
by chosing the first ftp I was able to download the package list. Chosing the "base" package list and all of its contents I got the error
    unable to download pacman
so I returned back to the ftp choice and tried the 2nd and 3rd ftp. But the setup was not able to download the package list from these servers.
Error fetching package list from server
(I checked the network connection and it worked)
I've decided to get the complete core Image with the packages inside (instead of using the network installation). As I've seen there was a new version from 2009 so I downloaded this one.
Everything works fine until I got to the packages choice. setup was not able to find the /src/core/pkg directory. I've checked the cd (after mounting manually on the ibook and now on a second machine), there is no directory called "core" neither a subdirectory called "pkg".
I was a little bit confused so I've downloaded all pacakages manually on my Desktop and copied them to an usb-stick into a directory called "core/pkg"
After chosing "SRC manually mounted" instead of cdrom setup was able to find the packages.txt (list of contents) so I checked the whole "base" list. Now setup was able to unpack the pacman-package ... but there appears the next error message:
    Installing packages...
    /arch/setup: line 955: pacman.static: command not found
    Package Installation FAILED.
so ... what now? currently I got 2 questions.
the first one: how am I solving the last error to be able to install the packages?
the second one: is my processor an 686er? I don't know if this description is the same like the intel processor description? Is this at ppc processors the same?
    with best regards

  • I created a book at the Ibooks author. But there are pages where the number of the page does not appear. How I can solve this problem? I thank you very much for any tip.

I created a book at the Ibooks author. But there are some pages which the number of page is not visible. What can I do to see the number of the page?

    Have you changed the template?
Some pages may not have numbers in place as default.  If you have changed the page or the template page, you may have added a object which as pushed the number out of view, or an image may be in a layer on top of the text.
If you select one object on the page...then go to Edit, select all, you should see the outlines of any content no matter that content may not be seen. Look at the bottom for a page width rectangle outline.. IF its there, you need to shuffle the content until you find that box, and use Arrange > bring to front.

  • I can't open the iBooks after I downloaded an article. How do I solve this?

My iBooks start giving me problem after I downloaded an article. Think it could be due to the article but can't delete it since I can't open ibooks

Did you try to remove the book you downloaded by deselecting it in iTunes and  sync the iPad again?
If this does not help, set it up as new device again.

There is no know virus threat for iOS devices, unless you run modified software on them.

  • IBook suffering from 'insomnia'

My iBook is no longer going to sleep when the lid is closed. I haven't changed any settings on my computer...the latch is still working on the lid... It just happened yesterday for the first time so I turned it off before bed, hoping the reset would help. But alas, today still no luck...

    Katherine,
It sounds like your reed switch isn't working. If you'd like to read more about the reed switch, check out this link:
    http://www.smalldog.com/newsarchive/techtails_display.php?id=194
Disabling the reed switch produces the behavior you are seeing:

So it looks like this is what happened to your iBook.

  • IBook has insomnia

My iBook G4, running Tiger, is having trouble falling asleep.
Used to be, I'd close it and it'd go to sleep immediately. You hear the drive spin down, the little flashing light comes on, and there, it's asleep.
Now, I've been noticing a problem.
It doesn't go to sleep right away. I haven't really documented its behavior much, but I've noticed that after closing the cover, several minutes later I'll hear it do it's sleep spin-down. Even closed it's easy to wake up as well.
I'm afraid I don't have much more than that at the moment.
Anyone got any ideas on what the story might be, or what I might do to correct it? Short of reinstalling the OS, with the lengthy series of upgrade installations that would entail?
    Thanks.

I have about 0.5 GB at the moment - a few large files waiting to xfr to another drive.
I just noticed something tonight, however. I think it has to do with the trackpad button. I closed the cover, and as I pressed down, the Apple light came on and I heard the drive activate. Opened it up, and it went to sleep. Close it, it's fine - until I press down on the front edge enough to click the trackpad button. Light goes back on. Open it up, wait a few seconds, and it's back to sleep.
Also, if I close the lid but don't press down, no light until I open it again.
It seems my iBook is momentarily ignoring whatever instruction tells it to ignore the trackpad button when the lid closes.
I think this is due to a delay in switching over to full sleep mode. I've timed it. Close the lid, light goes out, open the lid, light comes back on, then in 30 seconds (from initially closing the lid) it switches over to sleep mode. Screen goes black, flashing light, etc.
Does this sound like a good estimate of what's causing it? And any thoughts on why this might happen?
    Thanks

  • How do I solve the embedded font issue that ibook proofer does not accept?

I have several books I created in ID 6 and am now trying to prepare them to sell on iBookstore - and as others have noted ID creates a file for embedded fonts - I cannot find a way within ID to defeat this option when exporting to EPUB 3.0.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

In EPUB Exports Options/Advanced/CSS Options you could uncheck Include Embeddable Fonts.
