IChat program is fine, but not it's connection to AIM.

the iChat program is running fine, but not it's connection to AIM.
When the program loads it shows my status as Offline. When I change it to Available, it changes back to Offline with a squiggly line next to it.
The account settings are correct because it did work once but now doesn't.
I'm on a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 4GB iMac that I just got from Apple, Jan 2012. There were no CDs in the box to reinstall, so I haven't tried that.
How do I fix it?

Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443(press return/enter(you might have to tick and untick SSL for 443 to stick)).
Log back in again.
