IChat "Whiteboarding" in Leopard, the future of Apple's tech support?

As many have seen in the Keynote on monday, iChat in 10.5 Leopard will include a "whiteboard" feature that lets users display pictures, video, and even their live desktop in iChat. Presumably to do desktop sharing you won't need a built-in iSight as it would just take the feed from your monitor and display it in iChat.
That begs the question, will AppleCare and the whole Genius Bar system be "iChat-ized?" I forsee that instead of calling AppleCare, you open iChat and join a queue for a tech support person to open an Audio chat and a desktop sharing session. This would make it much easier for them to troubleshoot your problems, giving you a hands-on visceral way to see what they're doing.
Thoughts on this, anyone?

Hi Alex,
iChat answers are avaible to a selected few Applecare services based on what you actually bought.
I am not sure exactly which ones though.

  • Hello.  I upgraded my MIFI 2200 (had no contract on it) to a Jetpack (with a contract) when customer service told me this 4G device would use less data because it was faster.  This was not correct.  Anyway, I got the device, had problems, did tech support

I upgraded my MIFI 2200 (had no contract on it) to a Jetpack (with a contract) when customer service told me this 4G device would use less data because it was faster.  This was not correct.  Anyway, I got the device, had problems, did tech support, re-activated my MIFI.  1.  Decided to return the device. Spent hours with Customer Service, then finally up to Management, they agreed to take it back and void the contact, I sent it back immediately – and instead of voiding the contact they transferred it to my MIFI! Please cancel the contract on the MIFI. 2.  During the short time I had the Jetpack I continually received overage alerts, took it all the way up to 30 GB, each time I backdated the new data plan except twice when customer service did and failed to back date the increase, and once the computer locked customer service out and could not increase.  The end result is I have a $495 bill, many of these alerts were false since I ended up with only 14 MG for the month, etc.  I am asking that my bill be reduced significantly to reflect no overage and to compensate for these problems. Please open up a ticket for this.

I had Verizon JetPak and you will find it will eat data like crazy. I opted to sign on to ATT Uverse and configured my phones and other devices to the WiFi on the Uverse system. It took about 5 minutes to completed the configuration.  I was using 10 to 12 GB monthly to support 5 devices. Even if you use Verizon DSL, you are still subjected to same GB allotment.  In my area, Verizon DSL is not available. With Uverse, I have 250 GB monthly to use, and I have not even come close to using anything of that magnitude. I reduced my GB package with Verizon to 2 GB per month and since having ATT Uverse, I never use more than 1GB a month with Verizon.
I have no problem with Verizon cell phone service as we get a much stronger signal where we live than you can with ATT or any others.  It is just my opinion, but if you are running multiple devices off Verizon Jetpak, you will eventually spend a fortune to keep pace.  I pay $60 a month for 18 Mbps speed, although ATT have packages that cost much less. But, it saves me a bundle each month. The cost of Uverse alone is worth not having to run everything through a Jetpak.
If you have the  option to use another DSL service provider in your area, I recommend dumping the Jetpak and sign on with another carrier.

  • Mirror desktop now or in the future with Apple TV?

I have read that with iOS5 and the iPad 2, one can mirror their iPad screen onto their HD TV with the Apple TV2.  I have not read anything about mirroring desktop screens onto their TVs yet, and I have played around with this on my own Apple TV2 to no avail.  Can one mirror desktop content (e.g., a web browser)  to their HD TV through an Apple TV2, or do I have it right in that you can't do it?  It's always fun to speculate, so could this maybe be something to look forward to in the future?

No that,s not currently possible on the Apple TV.
This is a user to user community, no one here will know whether it may become possible, if you have any suggestions that you think might enhance the Apple TV you can send Apple your feedback here.

  • Apple service/tech support WOES

I'm posting this here because I can not find an e-mail to send it directly to apple (a big reason I'm upset). I have an Ipod shuffle (one of 3 pod currently owned) that locks up my computer when it's connected, which really isn't a big issue in and of itself what is an issue, tech support that is barely understandable, thick Indian accent, this lack of clear support will keep me from purchasing another Apple product, I’m currently looking for a notebook for college, which means no Pro book for me, nor will any additional Ipods be in my future nor will i recommend and of my friends/family to purchase any apple products.
Thank you, Apple for limiting my choices before I purchased a 2,000+ dollar laptop.
    -Paul

Welcome to 2007. You should try talking to the people in Pakistan about your electric bill. Let me know which laptop you buy where the tech support is all in the US and all speak perfect english.
There are other threads here about no email support offered, and a lot of other companies have gone in the same direction. From my experience with companies that do offer it, the support was merely a series of pre-programmed responses and wasted a lot of time. I'd much rather talk to someone on the phone.
Also, I have no hesitation if I can't understand someone on a support line telling them exactly that and asking to speak to someone else. And they have never hesitated in transferring me.
Finally, I have a Powerbook and I have had occasion to call for support. I have never talked to anyone that I could not understand and I don't think I was ever outside of the country. I can understand why Apple would outsource support on an $80 device and limit the calls, otherwise the price would have to be much higher.
Good luck with your shopping and if you didn't solve your problem with the Shuffle you can find a lot of help here. Do a search for your problem first.

  • Apple and tech support unresponsive

I want to know how to get action from Apple. I have spoken to over a dozen techs and 'product specialists', some of them more than once, and written two letters and I am getting fed up. Apple wrote back to me after my first letter, saying they would have called but I hadn't included my phone number. My second letter did include my phone number along with a lenghty list detailing the phone calls and attempted fixes for this Mac. I sent that letter two weeks ago and they have not responded. I have left voicemails and sent emails to some of these product specialists and I get no response. One guy said he was over-night shipping an item to me, that he would track it, and contact me when he saw that it was delivered. I found out several days later that it was on back-order, and I did not hear anything from him. Last Wednesday another guy told me he was over-night shipping the system software to me. I called again last night (Monday) to find out where it was. I was on hold for 50 minutes and spoke to two individuals for a total of maybe five minutes. I finally hung up. Today I called again and the guy said one disk is BACK-ORDERED and the other disk had been sent Sunday and gave me a tracking number. I found out when I tracked it that it was sent Monday and won't be here until Friday!!! I am on a merry-go-round here. If I get no answer to my letter, what else can I do? What recourse do I have? To whom or what department can I address my issues?

iMac G5 2.1 GHz with iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The original problem was minor - when connecting to the internet after the computer was asleep, all was generally fine. After startup, however, the modem would 'unexpectedly disconnect' and I would have to connect a second time. It was arranged for me to take it to my nearest authorized service center. Here's the long story, from my letter to Apple (items in parentheses edited):
On October 3, I took my computer to (XX) in (XX), 35 miles away. Ten days and several phone calls later, I picked up my computer unfixed. I called Apple Care when I got home and spoke to (JJ) who updated my case number to (##) and connected me with (TT). My case had not been updated with the information from (XX) - (?) so I read the comments from the repair order verbatim. He ordered an Airport Base Station and said I should email him when it arrived (on or before 10/19) and that he would track it and contact me when he saw that it had arrived.
On October 19, I called Apple Care wondering where the Airport was. I spoke to (AA) who said the Airport was on BACKORDER!! Please recall, the external modem I ordered with my computer was backordered for several weeks!
On October 23, (AA) emailed me a ‘Capture Data’ program. It did not work.
On October 24, I was able to speak again with (AA). He guided me through backing up by Home folder, and installing the system all over again. Unfortunately, we did not back up programs copied from my other computer and those were lost.
On October 25, (AA) arranged for Apple Field Tech, (BB), to come to my house and change the motherboard (new case number 70033395, Dispatch number D9828309).
On October 26, (BB) installed the motherboard. The problem persists. (BB) called Apple.
On October 28, the Airport arrived. There was no power cord. I emailed and called (AA), leaving a message. I called Apple Care and spoke with (MM) who connected me with (GG). He ordered the necessary power cable and adapter (dispatch # DXXXXXXXX). I set up the Airport. While I was online, the computer froze. I could not force quit. I had to shut down using the power button. I emailed this information to (AA).
On October 29, the G5 froze again. I called Apple Care and spoke with (MM). I told him I want a new computer! He connected me with (GG) who ordered a new hard drive and replacement memory. (Dispatch number DXXXXXXX). I almost immediately emailed him the following:
    (GG),
While you're at it, why not send (BB), the service tech, the tool he needs to unclip the computer case at the top (a rectangular piece of ice cream pail doesn't seem official, and it doesn't work very well). And backup cds, and in the event my system software is buggy, which it appears might be the case, send him that, too.
On October 30, I emailed (GG) asking him where I would find settings to notify me of incoming calls. I have not heard back from him.
On October 31, I emailed (TT), (AA) and (GG) asking if they had any new information for me. I also stated that the Airport would not connect until I unplugged it and plugged it back in again. I have heard nothing from them.
Last week (I didn’t take note of the date), (BB) called and said he had the parts. I told him we would have to hold off because I would be working every day and I would call him when I am going to have a day off.
On November 5, I re-emailed (GG), as I had not heard from him. I still haven’t.
I will say that almost without exception, the people I spoke to over the phone were polite, congenial and- knowledgeable, and seemed genuinely interested in helping me. They sounded almost as puzzled and frustrated as I. (AA) was especially patient and persistent in trying to solve the problem. I have no complaint about them except for their lack of response recently and the Airport power cord and adapter issue. And, of course, the lack of a fix.
I tried everything your people suggested. I requested a modem before taking my computer to the shop in order to eliminate that as the problem. The answer was no. Several of your product specialists thought it was a software problem. I requested new system software. The answer was no. They directed me through lengthy diagnostic attempts, etc. that failed.
I have taken off work for this. I have spent many hours on the phone for this. I have spent money on DVDs for backup, which I will have to do again before hard drive replacement. I have a folder of emails I have not mentioned here. The only person who ever emailed back to me is (AA). I will forward the emails to you if you want to see them.
I am tired of calling and leaving messages and not getting responses. I am tired of being stuck on the phone repeatedly for an hour or longer at a time I am tired of being on hold. I am tired of repeatedly explaining the problem. I am tired of trying things that do not work. I am tired of not being informed of progress, or the lack there-of. I am tired of this whole ordeal, PERIOD!
I am one of your biggest fans, but I have endured enough. I want a new computer.
It freezes more frequently now; this morning while shopping on line, the screen went white with lines forming a rectangular pattern. I shut it down with the power button. I apologize for the length of this saga, but it tells the story pretty thoroughly.

  • Apple iPhone tech support says, "Synching photos not supported."

I just got off a marathon (>1 hour) call with tech support on several issues regarding photos not synching and synched photos being corrupted on the iPhone (see here and here). At various times during the call (with several levels of tech support) I was told that:
    1. Photos must be modified using Adobe Albums for them to synch properly.
    2. Photos that don't synch properly must not have been created correctly.
    3. There must be something wrong with the camera that created the photos.
    4. The resolution for the photos must be incorrect.
    5. The Windows operating system must have something to do with it.
There were some others thrown in there, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head. It was a rather frustrating call, perhaps made moreso by the fact that this was my first interaction with Apple tech support and I had high hopes of something other than the lackluster tech support I receive from most other tech companies out there.
In any case, the outcome of the call was that I was unable to open a trouble ticket. I tried insisting that this was either an iTunes defect or an iPhone one, but Apple disagreed saying--and this is a quote--"Apple makes no guarantee that you will be able to view your photos on your iPhone."
    Meh. :-/

Very nice, PTBoater! That did indeed seem to work for both the problem of photos not synching and the problem of synched photos being corrupted. I wonder why I haven't seen this suggested before? In any case, if you'd like to head over to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1034293&tstart=0 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1017827&tstart=0 with the answer I will mark you as the answerer so you can get the answer points.
    Thanks again! Excellent.

  • What is the problem with Adobe Customer/Tech support for Premiere Pro?!?!?!

Today Adobe closed the NINTH support ticket - since mid-January - on my problem with Premiere Pro CC - it crashes on startup (just after the splash screen loads). From what I gather on here, I am not alone with this problem. It's apparently rather common!
I've left message after message and, as I said, NINE tech support tickets (most recent #0185443350). All have been closed or withdrawn without ANY help, reply or solution. Yet my monthly Cloud charge is reliably withdrawn from my bank account!
I need access to a working program! I use this in my studio business and my customers have been waiting since the end of January! This is now costing me money and customers!
Adobe - Apparently you don't particularly care about your customers. I am NOT impressed and, at this point, I'm starting get a little pissed off. It's been almost six months and.....NOTHING!
And YES, all of my drivers are up to date, etc. I've reinstalled. Updated drivers. Etc etc etc, ad nauseum!
    NOTHING WORKS!
    -Rowen Poole

    Hi Rowen,
I sent you a PM. I hope I can help you resolve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Does Apple have tech support people coming here regularly?

I note that there are several questions with zero replies. Does this mean that Apples does NOT populate this board? Isn't this supposed to be part of their tech support strategy? Why aren't there more answers here?
    Beth

    Thanks Zevoneer,
That answers my question which is more than I can say for tech questions I've had. Not ONE of those have been answered by the boards. I have found my own answers in the book I had to buy to teach me how to use my touch. I had problems this am getting Shuffle to work and couldn't figure out what to do to fix it. Got my trusty book out and figured it out myself before anyone could answer my question. Strange that such a simple question had no answers on this board. Or maybe everyone is busy with their holiday weekend? Could be! Anyway, it's fixed and anyone wanting to know how to fix a shuffle problem can check my other thread with the word 'shuffle' in it.

  • Anyone used Apple's tech support ?

Has anyone used Apples tech support for the iPod ?
both hardware and software support ?
did you have to do the pay option since it was past 90 days ?
was it an ok experience ?
I am just trying to decide if it is worth the call and $$ or not

It's cheaper (and often more effective) to post your problem here before paying for phone support.
    Cheers!

  • Look at the Future of apple TV

Download the 300 HD trailer from the Quicktime site and copy it to your apple TV. Now yo see video quality. So hopefully apple will start delivering product in 720p and get rid of the horrible Near HD quality videos, tv shows and film it is selling.
On the other hand I bought this mostly to incorporate my itunes and iphoto into my main Home entertainment set up. So I'm happy. If I need to watch TV I use my HD DVR and for Films my Blue-ray PS3.

    k-man55 wrote:
Given the ability to now rent HD TV shows on the computer I wonder what the likelihood is that eventually you'll be able to rent HD movies on a computer?
Undoubtedly a question of when rather than if.
I realize there is a price difference, etc. But I'd be willing to pay a few hundred extra more for that flexibility.
Most consumers wouldn't - Mac Mini is closer to a perfect HTPC type device than many with lots of benefits, but price is a huge factor - ever since DVD players have almost come free with the groceries, most consumers really eschew more expensive devices in favour of value for money provided adequate function. Yes a smaller group will prefer the versatility of a PC/Mac in the living room, but in the US at least AppleTV is a fraction of the cost of a Mac Mini, and still about half price in the UK.
The Mini is a bit long in the tooth now - an HDMI out would be very welcome on any new design IMO. You could almost envisage some convergence between the lines - better AppleTV hardware in the next generation with an updated mini as the next step up with an in-built DVD/BluRay player to cover those bases.

  • HT1438 All of a sudden, my IPhone (3G) "turned off" and I can't get it to power back up.  I'm, therefore, reluctant to take the SIM card out to even check the serial number to contact tech support.  Any ideas?  Is there a reset button to try?

All of a sudden my IPhone (3G, I think) "turned off" and won't power back up.  I know it's not the battery, but I have it plugged in anyway.  Any suggestions?

Hold down the power and home buttons at the same time for 15-20 seconds. You should see the Apple logo and it should re-boot.

  • I am considering buying apple's tech support for my iphone3GS

I upgraded my iphone to 4.1.0 which deleted all my new aps and am considering purchasing the ability to talk to their tech people whenever I have a question.
I am not technically gifted and can use help on several fronts.

"One is how to organize contacts into groups"
You do this on your computer.
"s why didn't the new aps promised when I ugrgraded to 4.0.1 did not appear."
What are you talking about? 4.0.1 was a bug fix update. There are no new anything associated with this update.
    4.0 had new features:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_iOS4_UserGuide.pdf
", I am leary of putting more aps on if I'm just going to lose them when I upgrade again."
On the iphone or any device/computer, you should ALWAYS backup/sync BEFORE you upgrade any software, so you do not lose you information if something goes wrong.
If you do this, then you can just sync them right back to the iphone if there is an issue with the upgrade.

No, Apple does not. What other companies might provide what you're looking for I don't know. Try searching the web for "karaoke software" or something similar.

  • What is the future for the enterprise server line from Apple?

    Hi.
I work at a company that is looking at several choices for our services. We've had a Xserve G5 for quite a while and we've been very pleased with it. Although it hasn't been a smooth ride, there haven't been any major issues that have blocked the evaluation.
However, now we are currently comming to an end of our evaluation period of different systems, and now we have to decide. The Xserve/MacOSX have it's advantages, but one issue that currently is a major questionmark is the future for the Apple enterprise line.
I'd really apreciate feedback regarding what you think will be the future for Apple's enterprise line, will it die slowly or get a new boost with the Intel switch, as I've read that Steve has stated time upon time that Apple is not an enterprise based business. Is it worth investing in Xserve/Xraid hardware or should one steer clear of Apple and choose other enterprise platforms such as Sun products based on Solaris for example.
    Thx,
    /Mysteron

Unfortunately, speculation pertaining Apple's future directions and unannounced products are forbidden here, as is discussion of their policies and procedures.
Also, it's hard to really give you a solid answer without knowing more about your particular situation.

  • Will the airport express in the future also be available with the 802.11ac?

will the airport express also be available with the 802.11ac technology in the future?

Apple as the most secretive company in the world keep their loyal customers in the dark and feed them a diet of .. well .. I cannot write its proper name.. but are you feeling like a mushroom??
They never tell until it is released.. but you can assume yes.. but the latest express was released last year.. in June.. the previous model had a lifespan of 4 years.. and the one before that, 4years.

If the pattern holds true there will be a new one in June, 2016.
