Icloud? erases x number of contacts
Please help.
I used to sync my contacts with icloud without any further ado, but all of a sudden i got like quadruplets of every contact.
I cleaned that up using "look for duplicates" in contacts.
But afterwards, a bunch of names were missing, due to the cleaning up or to icloud syncing? i dunno...
I would like to visualize a time machine backup in order to skim throuh the missing names, wihtout importing it in contacts, because this would erase the existing one, resulting in more data loss!!.
Is there a program other than contacts that can open .abbu files, or is there a way to convert .abbu files in CVS or another format?

If you are trying to access your contacts in Time Machine, you need to look in your user Library. Hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/Sources. Then enter Time Machine with the folder highlighted.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.

You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

Icloud erased new contacts and brought back old?
I turned on icloud on my iphone 4s and it brought back old contacts i deleted 3+ years ago and erased all my newer contacts. I had always had my phone backed up on my macbook at well, but now when I open the contact book, I have the same exact problem on my phone, and not only has it brought up old contacts, but it has listed any number/email address I have contacted but did not have saved (bunch of random craigslist ad emails and old teacher's emails) How do I get my old contacts back?

It's not really clear from your post. Do you have a back up of either your phone from when the contacts were correct or of your computer when the contacts were correct. -
I have accidentally erased my iPhone 3 Contacts when I toggled to OFF and thught the data was saved in iCloud. The contacts are already duplicated on my iPad2, and if I could send them to my iPhone3, then I could reclaim them all.
If you turned contact sync off, you'll have to turn it back on to sync it back to the phone.
It's extremely unclear what you did where.
Do the contacts still exist in iCloud? -
What is the maximum number of contacts in a group that will send in an iCloud email? I'm sending from MacBookPro.
Limits on Sending Messages
iCloud has several safeguards to ensure that only iCloud members can send messages using the iCloud outgoing mail server. Among these safeguards are reasonable limitations on:
The total number of messages you can send each day (200 messages)
The number of recipients to whom you can send each day (1000 recipients)
The maximum number of recipients per message (100 recipients)
The size of incoming and outgoing messages (20 MB)
You can send 10 emails to 100 people each in a day, for example, or 198 messages with, on average, 5 recipients (and five ninety-ninths). -
The number of contacts on my Macbook,iPhone and iCloud are all different. So when i tried to import contacts which i thick are called vCards from my address book on to my iCloud through the options menu on icloud a message came up saying "invalid vCards"? Any ideas? Really want to get this sorted if i could

Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.

Today I was looking through my contacts and I realized that I had all of my moms contacts on my phone. So then I told my mom about it and so she asked me to erase all of my contacts off her phone, so I went through it all manually, going to their name editing and deleting. but then I realized that by deleting all of my contacts off her phone, it deleted them off of mine too! Really Apple!? so then I tried to fix the problem by syncing my phone to my computer and it did nothing, and all I had left was my moms contacts so then I went to iCloud, and turned off contacts and it asked me if I wanted to erase all the other contacts that I had received... and I clicked yes. because I didn't think it would be ******** any more, so now I have zero contacts, and them I checked on my moms phone, and now all of her contacts have been erased off her phone! ***!? how do I fix this because a lot of my moms contacts are very important to her job so she needs them back and I'm in a lot of trouble right now.

I deleted a large number of contacts on one iphone when i got a new one. icloud must have automatically synced to the old one, then synced my new one to that, thus deleting many contacts. can i restore them? can i retrieve a snapshot of my icloud as it existed yesterday?

In other words, the contacts are deleted everywhere. Also, any iOS backup to icloud does not include contacts or any of the other Apple data, like calendars, reminders, etc. The only way you can get that data back is if it was on a computer which has been frequently backed up. You restore the data from the backup. (This reference to "backup" is a local backup, it has nothing to do with icloud.)

One of you will need to migrate to a separate iCloud account, then you can delete the other person's data from each account.
To migrate to a new account, start by saving an photo stream photos that are not in your camera roll to your camera roll. To do this, open your my photo stream album, tap Select, tap the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward pointing errow), then tap Save to Camera Roll. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, choose Keep on My iPhone when prompted, provide the account password to turn off Find My iPhone when prompted, then sign in with a different Apple ID to create the new account and choose Merge to upload your data.
You can then each to to your iCloud accounts on icloud.com from your computer and delete the other person's data from your account. -
Is there a maximum number of contacts in an Address Book group?
I have 4,367 contacts. I'm trying to create two different groups, one for my wife and one for me. The majority of the 4,367 contacts will be in my group.
I've tried several time but keep getting the same result.
On the iCloud website I create a new group with my name.
I copy several letters worth of names (say the As through the Cs) from All Contacts lists to the David list.
Everything works fine until I finish the Rs, with about 3,800 contacts. I've tried it signing in and out and everything sticks and looks fine.
From then on every name I add appears under the R banner (see below) and, once I sign out and sign back in, disappears.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
I'm using a 6 month old 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 running OS 10.7.4. Not experiencing problems in any other area.Thanks for the link. I don't think it's a space issue. When I look at my iCloud account through System Preferences it shows that I've got 24.99GB of 25GB available (it's just the Contacts and a personal Calendar).
The rules on limits, though, are really confusing. Total number of contacts 25,000 - I can understand that. Maximum size of a contact card 256KB - ok, I see how if you have War and Peace in the notes section that would be a problem. But what does it mean that maximum size of a contact group is 256KB? That's the same size limit as a single card so I assume they're referring to the size of the list of contact cards in the group. But how many contact cards equals 224KB?!? Based on experience, I'm guessing it equals about 3,800 contact names (which frankly doesn't seem like a lot to me - I've been collecting contacts since I got my first Palm Pilot in 1996, which comes to around 225 names a year, not a lot if you're in business).
Anyway, thanks for the help. If I run across a solution somewhere, I'll post it. -
A simple way in sending message on a large number of contacts?
Is there a simple way in sending a large number of contacts? I mean, i'll send my message on a group, i.e. "hello" to "classmates" group. I know it is present during ios4 & 5 version? Why now on ios7? How's that? Some of my contacts are changing new numbers so i can't add them to my inbox.

i have erased my all phone contact list and then the message comes that it will be deleted with in an hour. but now my phone is not starting and only the apple logo appears on the screen. what should i do now..!
That number is for an apple server in the UK that is used for iMessage activation. A hidden SMS is snet to that number when you turn iMessage on and is used to verify your phone number. I suggest you turn iMessage off. In settings/phone turn on dial assist. Check with your carrier to see if you can send an international SMS as you end that possibility to activate iMessage. Rest your phone (Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).) then turn iMessage back on.

My Ipad2 has a message: Ipad disabled connect to itunes. The trouble is I am out of the US now and cant connect to my my home mac or any computer it is synced with. What can I do? I cant even access the serial number to contact apple. Help!
Call Apple anyway. If the device was ever registered with then they will have the serial # on file and can look you up by other info such as your name or phone number.
To re-enable an iPad any computer with iTunes should work. However, if your data was not backed up to iCloud you will not be able to access it until you get back to your home computer. -
I have a large number of contacts in my Outlook account. As long as that account is active on the iPhone (6 ) the contact are available on the phone but disappear when that account is removed from the phone. How do I transfer the contacts permanently to the phone?
Archive the contacts you have in Address book, then delete them, they will be removed from iCloud as well. Restore the archive

Hi, after updating my OS to iOS 7.1, all my contacts are showing up twice on whatsapp. Also in the contacts, every contact seems to be linked twice to icloud. Any solutions?

It seems you are experiencing an issue with contact syncing and management. It seems you've removed an email account which contained a number of contacts that are not associated with your iCloud account. You may want to consider importing the contacts from the email account you removed. You can do it easily by following the steps in this article:
iCloud: Import a vCard
You can import an electronic business card, also called a vCard, into iCloud Contacts. If the vCard contains contact information for more than one person, each contact becomes a separate entry.
In iCloud Contacts, choose Import vCard from the Action pop-up menu , which appears at the bottom of the All Contacts list or a list of group contacts
Select a vCard to import.
The contacts from the vCard are added to the All Contacts group in Contacts. You can add the contacts to any other group by dragging them to the desired group.

From OSX daily:The easiest way is through your iPhone or add a semicolon ";" NOT a comma in Mac Address book .
Though you’ve long been able to add automatically dialed extensions to contacts on the iPhone, the newest versions of iOS handle extensionsmuch more intelligently, allowing you to create a “Dial Extension” button to any specific contact. That extension dialer can be activated manually, making the navigation of telephony menus infinitely easier, here’s how to quickly add this to a contact:
Open Contacts and tap the contact name to add the extension to, then tap the “Edit” button
Tap the phone number entry, place the cursor at the end, then tap the “+*#” button to access additional options
Choose “wait” then enter the extension afterwards, it will add a semicolon and the extension afterwards to the address appearing like so: 1-888-555-5555;123
Tap “Done” and exit out of contacts
Now dial the contact to discover a “Dial 123″ button has appeared, tap that whenever you want to dial the extension
The extensions can also be added from a Mac in Contacts (Address Book) by adding a semicolon to numbers followed by an extension, just be sure to sync it through the same iCloud account or it won’t go over to the iPhone.
Anyone who frequently uses extensions to reach specific people at an office, or anyone who has battled an automated phone system knows how useful this can be. You can even set a string of numbers, though the Dial button remains the same.
