  • HP G70-120EA upgrade HDD problem

I've been having problems with my notebook crashing. A test confirms it's a HDD problem. So I buy a replacement HDD exactly the same as before (WD Scorpio Blue) only this time 320GB. The original was 160GB.
I've fitted the new HDD and tried 3 times to reinstall the software using the Recovery discs. But it keeps failing to install the software properly.
Is the problem caused because the new HDD has a larger capacity or is it something else?
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What is the error. Yesterday, I swapped HDD on one of my laptops from 160GB to 750GB w/o any problem. My suggestion is to check the BIOS and upgrade it.
    Regards.

  • Satellite C665D - Second time the same HDD problem.

I have a C665D laptop. Eight months after i purchase it I got hdd problem (reallocated sector count -> value around 2000 !!).
So I send it to service, and got with new hard drive.
And now, after 7 months got the same problem, (hard drive fault).
So my questions is why it happen twice, this same fault?
Did somebody had this same problem?
Is any problem with this series of laptops?
Can I do something to prevent damage to the disk the next (third one)?
    Thank you for any help.

    Thank you for your reply.
    > Any HDD will die sooner or later
I understand this and agree with that, but what is the average of usage the HDD ?
My HDD seems to die very soon (power on 105 days 9 hours )
    > Also moving the notebook while HDD is in use would affect the HDD functionality.
I'm also understand this, but believe me or not, but I'm very careful when moving the laptop. That is why I don't understand why my disk is gone so quickly. From SMART table of HDD I could see that the value of G-sense error is only 14.
On my wife's laptop's HDD is perfekt, no bad sectors etc. and G-sense errors is over 300. No one is special careful with this laptop, using as normal way, and nothing happen with HDD.
    > By the way: HDD issues have nothing to do with the notebook series
I thought that may be in some way laptop itself is damaging (or not protecting) hard drive - is it possible ?
Or may be if not with laptop, there is some issue (problem) with this series of HDD?
    > ...tool called HDD protection utility.
Thank you for that. I didn't know about this kind of software. Will try it as well.

  • IPod classic displays 'No music' after sync, HDD problem? Geschiedenis • Verwijder  So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn't find any files on the iPod anymore. H

So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn’t find any files on the iPod anymore. However when you look in the settings it displays that ~roughly 90 GB free space is available. Seen the fact that I had about 60 gigs of music this doesn’t seem like a coincidence and I think my music is still somewhere on the ipod but the HDD isn’t recognizing it anymore.
I’ve tried resetting it, and resetting it to factory settings, which didn’t work. When connected to a desktop it won’t be recognized by iTunes, it displays an error message that the iPod cannot be read and that I have to reset it to factory settings.
I’ve spent some time researching this problem yesterday and I ran into a myriad of vaguely similar problems didn’t really offer any help. Currently I’m thinking that formatting the iPod might work, and restoring the software afterwards. However this is a rather bold strategy so I’d like to consult you here first.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for the info, with formatting my iPod I managed to connect it to iTunes again.
However..in the page you linked to there is a section about how transferring large amounts of data can dump your library. That seems to be the problem in this case. It won't even allow me to transfer more than 2 gigabytes of music per sync, if I go higher it will dump everything again. Having over >60 GB of music in my library, this is disastrous to say the least.
Do you think that there is any other solution besides the method you mentioned involving Smart Playlists?

  • IMac 27 Mid 2011 - HDD problems

Hi! I have some problems with HDD (1 Tb Seagate) on my iMac 27.
    - The temperature is so high. 58-60 C with fan 3500, but only Photoshop is running with 40Mb file, thats all.
    - Noize and vibration on any surfaceces.
I checked "Mac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program" and my iMac eligabible for that program.
I live in Ukraine. We don't have Apple Store, just Apple Authorized Service Provider. If my HDD is defective can they replace itunder warranty?

Seagate states that operating temperature for that hard drive is up to 69 Celzius deegrees. See here http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/disc/manuals/desktop/Barracuda%207200 .12/100529369b.pdf.
But I have doubts about HDD temperatures and longevity and would recommend investing in buying iStatsMenus and keeping an eye on HDD temp (put it in top bar).
Whenever I notice HDD going over 45 or 50 I turn on fans to higher speeds (iStatsMenus has built in rules but you can add your own too). After few minutes everything cools down.

  • Macbook pro 13" late 2011 stuck up at apple logo and spinning wheel, changed HDD problem still exists

i have a macbook pro 13' late 2011 unit and its not starting up, found out that the HDD was defective, but when i changed the HDD the problem still exists, what may be the problem?
    thanks

Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD and running Disk Utility and checking to see if the HD needs repairs?
Restart holding Command + r and at the recovery screen select Disk Utility. Then select Macintosh HD and click  on 'repair disk'. If anything gets altered click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu. More info here about the Recovery HD:

    @pok0j
You best bet at getting the most uncorrupted data out of that disk, is to stop using it until you get a new disk that is at least twice as big as that one. The reason is that when you get a new disk, you want to try to do a full disk image in one go and get as much data out as possible before more data corruption occurs or the disk stops working at all.
The twice as large requirement is because you can then take your time to extract the files you want from the image and have enough free space to store them. After that make a backup strategy if you don't have one yet.
    @drhill1
Has far as I know, both Current_Pending_Sector and Offline_Uncorrectable attributes start out at zero and 1) increase when there is a problem with a sector, 2) decrease when the problem is solved either by overwriting the affected sectors or when the sectors get reallocated thus decreasing the count, which should return to zero when there are no more sectors with problems. This implies that the count should never exceed the total number of user addressable sectors. Like I said, I have never seen any disk where those attributes didn't make sense, if those attributes weren't defined they wouldn't be reported I suppose.

  • HDD Problem from Boot Camp

Hey, I just got some problems trying to set up Boot Camp. On my MacBook, I have a good amount of HDD space used about, with about 60gbs left. So I wanted to set it up so that half of that would go to the new Windows partition. So I set that up, it partitioned the drive, told me to restart, but when I did, it was as if nothing happened. The new partition is nowhere to be found. But now I'm just missing 30gbs. It's as if it took out the 30gbs, went to put it in the partition, but just forgot about it. Now whenever I try to do anything in the Disk Utility that would use that 30gbs, it gives me an error. What can I do to fix this, aside from wiping the hard drive, I have a lot of stuff on here that I can not lose. Thanks.

Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • HDD problem on IDE 2 (or IDE3)

    Hi,
I have a problem with my HDD. It's not recognize in the bios when i plug it to the IDE 2 or 3. I have my burner and my dvd on the IDE 1.
What can i do ??? It's a problem to have a HDD and a CD driver on the same nap ???
THx a lot for the answer.

    False.
Some optical devices will only work (or work more reliablyt) if only on the end connector.
Others like to be on the middle connector.  That's true even if you have the jumpers set for the correct position on the cable.
So, for example, if you have two optical that like to be on the end, you might have problems with one in the middle, even if the jumpers are set correctly.
Thats why i suggested you try with just one optical.
You may be able to eventually get everything sorted out but it is much better to get your system up and running with the HDD on IDE1 and one optical on IDE 2.
When that works reliably, you can then experiment with adding the second optical back in and find the position for it that results in the most stable system.

HDD diagnostics program says ERROR code 0000: Read verification failed
If I let the normal start  up take place I will get the blue screen of death.. stating umountable boot volume
I tried the Rescue and Recovery CD  - I hear CD loading but don't get past the black "ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery" screen.. which I now know probably is because the "safe" UBUNTU corrupted the HDD.
So , I suspect that I might have to reformat my HDD. .. But on the T60 I am not sure how to do it with the "hidden" partition that is on the Think pad laptops.
Any advice.. WILL BE GREATLY APPREACIATED
    TIA
    RIch

I am not going to worry much over the PSU, my comp seems to run pretty cool.
Anyways I solved the boot problem and it was not the IDE cable backwards or jumper locations. It was because the drives i was trying to boot from were secondary drives on a dual boot system, i just did advanced install on the new drive and tried using that drive as master. Both 40 gigs are now working...Lesson learned. I am not an expert, but i am getting there
Now i have to figure out the IDE RAID thingie..I know there is already a host of info on it so i will do a search.
Thank you all for your help, and I will probably be here again with something or another, lol.

  • Sorting out an HDD problem diagnosis

In the topic I staryed on "Safari Beta 3 locked up now iMovie won't run" in the Safari beta 3 group, the discussion changed from an iMovie/Safari 3 issue to one of HDD reliability. Previous experience suggested to me that my problems may be related to a clash between the HDD controller firmware and the OS.
It's also been suggested that the problems could be image related. However, I have considerable image experience on Windows boxes and I while I have seen the occasional corruption, I've never seen these sorts of issues.
    I have had:
Lockup with trashed OS on hard restart -- archived and reinstalled OS. The machine was only a couple of weeks old with only a few apps (Aperture, Quicken, and iWorks) loaded.
    Then after the OS reinstall:
Some transfered JPEG files that were OK on my old PC, were unreadable on the iMac. Repeated transfers using alternate methods, succeeded in bring all over successfully . . . eventually. This was a problem before and after the OS reinstall.
Transferring application data also corrupted, but in a "neat" fashion, i.e. the data was completely wrong, but also completely readable. This was a problem before and after the OS reinstall.
System files go missing in IOBluetoothUI yet they are still there when copy and replace is attempted.
Emptying the Trash resulted in a restore of the earliest versions of many, perhaps all, of the files in the trash.
Folders going empty for no apparent reason.
When copying files into folders, I end up with nested folders of the same name instead, with the copied files either at the lowest level or at both levels.
Locksup requiring a hard restart keep happening, usually resulting in file damage somewhere.
My surviving data is now well backed up so I'm tempted to do a format and reinstall of the OS, however, before I go to that effort, I'd like to get some sense from the experienced people here if I'm likely wasting my time and the HDD needs replacing.
    Thanks

Because it isn't clear that you've ever reformatted the drive in the past nor attempted to repair the drive prior to reinstalling OS X there's no way to know if the drive itself is defective or if you may have some other hardware defect such as bad or defective RAM or logic board. Inasmuch as that's the apparent situation I'd suggest you at least do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
In your case I would NOT omit Steps 4-6 because zeroing the drive will discover and spare out any bad sectors that may have developed and will also assure the drive will be totally cleaned. After completing the formatting you can quit DU and return to the installer to finish reinstalling OS X.
I also suggest that you run full diagnostics on the machine. Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostic tests several times. Note the full output of any reported errors discovered during the testing.

  • Toshiba P10-304 crashing, hdd problems?

    Hi All,
I have a Toshiba P10-304 and its recently been going a bit mental.
I am running XP Pro and basically it first started crashing frequently and then later it came up with the error : media test failure, check connection , etc. As a result, I figured the hard drive had died. Since then I have bought a new hard drive (seagate momentus) and it formatted fine and was working well for 2 days. But now on the 3rd day, it has started to display similar symptoms as my old oem toshiba drive. It tends to crash frequently, the hard drive continues to make a horrible ticking noise even with the system has crashed. It also for the first time displayed the same 'media test failure..' error messages but then on reboot booted fine, but only to crash again about 5 minutes later.
Ive just finished university and am doing a spot of web design and its really annoying me so I would appreciate any help.
    Cheers,
    Idnan

  • External Hdd problem with macbook pro 13" i5

I bought a extern hdd last week and i have detect that it doesn´t initialize when my early macbook pro 13" i5 come back from sleep or i turn on the mac. I must reconnect the hdd´s usb cable. My question is... Thats it normal?

Very true that if you don't see it in Disk Utility, you also won't see it on the desktop.
It sounds like you have an intermittent contact somewhere. It might be worth trying a different cable and a different port. Also try that cable with some other device.
No idea if the problem is with the drive's port, the Mac's port, or the cable, but you might be able to chase it down by trial and error. It may be something like a cable that is not fully engaged in the port and not making good contact.

  • Ideapad U510 Touchpad problem

I have bought a lenovo ideapad u510 a week before. From the very begining I am facing toucpad problem, The cursor jumps everywhere in the screen and make automatic selection all by itself. I am totally unable to control the cursor.
I have tried installing Synaptics driver after unistalling default Elan driver, but it wasn't solved a bit. I have tried by changing various options from the  Elan menu, also disabled 'Multi-finger' option.
I have bought it from Canada but now I'm far away from there. So if anyone knows the solution please help me.

Please reinstall your default touchpad driver (ELAN). According to Elan: The main cause of unexpected cursor moving or click is the accidental palm contact with the touch pad. You can adjust your Palm Tracking setting to maximum to make your touch pad insensitive to "palm contacts"
