Toshiba P10-304 crashing, hdd problems?

Hi All,
I have a Toshiba P10-304 and its recently been going a bit mental.
I am running XP Pro and basically it first started crashing frequently and then later it came up with the error : media test failure, check connection , etc. As a result, I figured the hard drive had died. Since then I have bought a new hard drive (seagate momentus) and it formatted fine and was working well for 2 days. But now on the 3rd day, it has started to display similar symptoms as my old oem toshiba drive. It tends to crash frequently, the hard drive continues to make a horrible ticking noise even with the system has crashed. It also for the first time displayed the same 'media test failure..' error messages but then on reboot booted fine, but only to crash again about 5 minutes later.
Ive just finished university and am doing a spot of web design and its really annoying me so I would appreciate any help.
Cheers,
Idnan

Hi,
it can be that the IDE controller is defective, this explaines why the new HDD have also problems!
The only thing you can do is contacting a Serivce Partner for a checkup!

  • Toshiba P10-504 Motherboard Failure

I recently had a major problem with my Toshiba P10-504. I have no idea how it happened but according to the people at Toshiba who are fixing it the motherboard has failed. This meant that when attempting to power up all I got was the blue light and the sound of the fan and possibly the HD whizzing round and no display at all. The cost of fixing it has been quoted at about 450 and it will take a couple of weeks. As you can imagine I never want to run into this problem again and would really like to understand how it happened. Any information would be great. To help heres a list of everything I did and didnt do before it crashed that may be relevant:
    Before the crash
    1) Installed a new memory module: 1GB DDR333 SODIM (pqi brand?) - I installed the module a week before the system failed and it was running fine. Im obviously worried about re-installing the module when the laptop is returned (advice?).
One the day of the crash
    1) Set processor scheduling to background services To increase the performance for audio software
    2) Turned of all the power schemes and hibernation modes Always found these annoying
    3) Fixed the swap file for the virtual memory to about 1.2GB Just experimenting with different performance settings, although that was probably a bit excessive.
    4) After doing the above three things I simply shut the lid, no applications were running and the system had not yet been shut down and was running off batteries. Thats the last time it worked.
The laptop had not experienced any physical damage.
Thanks for reading through all that - hope Im making sense. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Chris.

    Hi Chris
Looking at the list of things you done I cannot see anything that would damage the computer.
Installing hardware (memories, PC Cards and so on) are always a 'risk', but as long as you keep to the standards and use your head instead of force you should be pretty safe.
Since the memory had been running in your machine for a week it seems very unlikely that it can be the cause of the problem.
My very long experience with notebook hardware service tells me that I in but a very few cases have seen software damaging hardware. In theory it is possible, but in real life - it's the last possibility on my list anyway.
Stuff in the computer breaks most of the time for no visilible reason - means that it does not break because of misuse, bad handling or bad software. It just breaks.
Looking into the number of 'parts' 1 computer have inside (not counting just Motherboard, memory, harddisk and so on but counting connectors, transistors in the big chips, solderings on the big chips and so on) I (my personal point of view) feel sometimes that it is good fortune that they don't break.
So to answer your question: just take normal care of your computer, stick to hardware-options that are manufactured for your computer (prefer Toshiba originals) and you've done your part of the deal :)

  • Satellite P10-304 Won't power up now

    Hello,
Got Satellite P10-304 machine which won't power up after 2nd attempt. What happened:-
Machine powered up from cold start - booted up Window XP ok. After 5 -10 minutes, machine screen went dimmed (looks like backlight have gone) and couldn't power off machine by pressing power button, so had to remove the battery pack to kill the power into machine.
Now, machine won't power up (even battery pack fully charged), When I pressed the power button, I do get a orange light flashed once inside the blue light circle area around power button.
Leave machine powered off for about 1 hour and machine started up in BIOS screen and then after 3 mins screen went dimmed again. Machine won't start up again! Checked AC adaptor and getting 19.3Volts and 6.1Amp so power supply unit ok.
Sounds like the motherboard is playing up and needs replacing? Dose anyone come across this problem before?
    Many thanks

    Hello
    > Sounds like the motherboard is playing up and needs replacing?
    Yes, it seems so :(
Maybe its not the mainboard but another hardware part. But to be honest you should go to an authorized service provider. The technicians can check the notebook to determine what is exactly wrong.
And here you can search the nearest ASP:

    Hi
Did you check the user manual of the P10 Satellite?
Sometimes the compatible CD/DVD drives can be found in the user manual which should be installed on your notebook.
If you dont have the user manual then you could download it from the Toshiba page.
However, if you will not find the right info in the user manual then I would recommend contacting the ASP in your country for details.
Usually you could order a supported drive from these guys.
Its important that you know what drives are compatible due to the different master\slave\c-sel settings.
    Bye and good luck

  • Crashed hdd data recovery

Running 10.8.5, I dropped MacBook Pro 2012 and HDD never rebooted again.  Replaced with SSD and MacBook Pro works fine.  Tried crashed HDD via external USB but neither Disk Utility nor Data Rescue 3 recognize crashed HDD.  Have also tried leaving crashed HDD installed and booting from remote HDD or from Data Rescue in DVD drive, in both cases where damaged HDD is left installed and an alternative boot method is used, I get from the all gray screen to the Apple with a progress bar on bottom.  Progress bar hits about 15% and then screen goes black (but unit does not shut down).  Damaged HDD makes no noises.
My question is:  what's the best way to recover data off of the crashed HDD if neither Disk Utility nor Data Rescue 3 recognize it?  I have some accounting docs and home movies/photos that are lost and don't want to spend thousands to recover.  I've heard of Linux (Ubuntu) programs to read and transfer directories or is this a Genuis Bar or Disc Savers type problem?  Thanks!

many HDD companies have data recovery services such as:

  • HP G70-120EA upgrade HDD problem

I've been having problems with my notebook crashing. A test confirms it's a HDD problem. So I buy a replacement HDD exactly the same as before (WD Scorpio Blue) only this time 320GB. The original was 160GB.
I've fitted the new HDD and tried 3 times to reinstall the software using the Recovery discs. But it keeps failing to install the software properly.
Is the problem caused because the new HDD has a larger capacity or is it something else?
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What is the error. Yesterday, I swapped HDD on one of my laptops from 160GB to 750GB w/o any problem. My suggestion is to check the BIOS and upgrade it.

  • Satellite P10-304 DVD/CD-RW drive to slow

    Hi
My P10-304 has a 24 x speed dvd/cdrw drive. Burning a full cd takes 10-12 minutes. That's far to much. I'm using Nero Burning Rom, but i think, that has nothing to do with it.
ps. I use highets burning speed, have a lot of free space on hdd, use good cdr.
    Can anyone help?

    Hello
I have the Satellite P20 and it has, I believe, the same drive like your P10. I can really not say that the drive burns too slow. I dont know which kind of data you burn but in my opinion 10 min is normal time for burning whole 700 Mb on CD-R/RW.

  • USB malfunction on P10-304

I have P10-304, well it was workin fine till a couple of days back when while printing, the printer showed an communication error msg. thought i tried to switch it on n off it didn't work, i tried to unistall n then reinstall the printer but on installing the computer does not recognize the printer, though the printer can be installed on other comp. i tried an alternative printer but it too won't be recognised, the device manager reveals the usb ports are ok, but still the comp doesn't recognise new hardware i try to install via the usb port.
    whats wrong guys

    Hi
I guess you tried defferent USB ports? I mean connect the printer to the other port/s you might have on the PC?
    Same problem?
If yes, then please try something more simple like a USB mouse or keyboard. Still same problem? If yes, then it smells of a hardware problem but to be sure recover the PC. !!!Please note!!!: all data will then be lost!!
If No to closest above question, is Your printer also drawing power from USB? Maybe you should try using a AC Adaptor-driven HUB between?
If No to the topmost question, then try a different USB port and then check the other tips in my text above.
    Good luck

  • Unable to send crash/error problem report

    Hi There,
I have recently noticed that when a program I am running either force quits on it's own or I have to manually force quit the program, I am unable to send crash/error problem report to Apple. This has happened for all my programs from Safari and iTunes to recently Microsoft Word. The crashing messed up my internet as I had to give up using Firefox (because it kept crashing and wouldn't send a report) so I downloaded Chrome.
Yesterday, Microsoft Word had to force quit because I manually quit the program but it never closed. It kept running in the background at 192% under my operating processes. When I force quit Word, it gave me the option to report the problem or ignore it. I chose to send a report but once that Problem Report screen loaded, it would not let me send to Apple, stating "Your submission could not be submitted. Please try again later."
I have tried numerous times since all to no avail. As I mentioned, this happens on a lot of programs lately and I don't know what to do to fix it. Below are the specs of my Macbook. I can copy the problem details, but is lengthy.
    Any help/feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Apple is apparently no longer accepting crash reports for 'Leopard' OS X 10.5.8.

Typical disk-maintenance activities when crashes occur include using Verify, and Repair Permissions on your hard drive (probably labeled Macintosh HD), using Disk Utility.
10% to 15% of hard-drive capacity is generally acknowledged as the minimum amount of free space needed for adequate performance.

Time machine should have a good copy - how are you determining that it is corrupt
If you want the thumbnails as photos right click on the iPhoto library and make a copy of the data folder and then import it into a new iPhoto library - it contains your thumbnails

  • Satellite C665D - Second time the same HDD problem.

I have a C665D laptop. Eight months after i purchase it I got hdd problem (reallocated sector count -> value around 2000 !!).
So I send it to service, and got with new hard drive.
And now, after 7 months got the same problem, (hard drive fault).
So my questions is why it happen twice, this same fault?
Did somebody had this same problem?
Is any problem with this series of laptops?
Can I do something to prevent damage to the disk the next (third one)?
    Thank you for any help.

    Thank you for your reply.
    > Any HDD will die sooner or later
I understand this and agree with that, but what is the average of usage the HDD ?
My HDD seems to die very soon (power on 105 days 9 hours )
    > Also moving the notebook while HDD is in use would affect the HDD functionality.
I'm also understand this, but believe me or not, but I'm very careful when moving the laptop. That is why I don't understand why my disk is gone so quickly. From SMART table of HDD I could see that the value of G-sense error is only 14.
On my wife's laptop's HDD is perfekt, no bad sectors etc. and G-sense errors is over 300. No one is special careful with this laptop, using as normal way, and nothing happen with HDD.
    > By the way: HDD issues have nothing to do with the notebook series
I thought that may be in some way laptop itself is damaging (or not protecting) hard drive - is it possible ?
Or may be if not with laptop, there is some issue (problem) with this series of HDD?
    > ...tool called HDD protection utility.
Thank you for that. I didn't know about this kind of software. Will try it as well.

  • Satellite P10-304: WLan card replacement - Do I need the same Wlan chip?

    Hi all,
got a satellite P10-304 from a mate here.
He said the wireless has never worked on it and hes had it years and someone else has already looked at it and changed the wireless card TNA.
Basically it just acts as if the wireless switch isn't working and it stays permanently off although the drivers install fine and the card shows as ok. Just disconnected.
Now I thought, ok, i'll take a look as I'm pretty good on the old hardware. Took it apart and what do you know, the switch was bent and not in place. I put the switch back into place, checked in the on and off positions with a multimeter to check the switch was working and it was doing its job perfectly.
Now it still does not work.
I am guessing this is now due to the fact that as I said, the card has been changed from its original to an intel pro jobby.
My question is, am I right, do I just need to get the same card that was originally in it. I assumed that when the switch was put back correct I would have it solved.

    Hi
The WLan card should be enabled bu switching the switch to ON position (the LED should light up) and additionally you should chose the WLan antenna using the key combination FN + F8.
    Please check this!
Note; go to device manager -> Wlan card properties -> Advanced tab
There you can check if WLan is enabled as well.

  • KT4 Ultra crashing/rebooting problems

Hi all, I've been having computer crashing/rebooting problems when I play 3d games since I got this board. It can happen between 1-40 minutes during a game session and when the computer crashes, the screen would garble up and reboot along with the garbled screen until I cold boot it. I thought it was a heat problem at first but the cpu heat displays at between 34C-39C. Also, when I tried switching out the video card with an older one, the computer works fine during gameplay, and my newer video card ran fine on a friend's computer. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?
    System specs are:

  • Samsung 1.5TB External HDD problems - very slow and crashes Mac

I recently bought a Samsung 1.5TB Story Station External HDD, to supplement my full iomega 320GB drive (firewire). The Samsung is USB 2.0, and I quickly realised that the Mac only has USB 1 - i.e. very slow. The HDD took about 15mins to even register in Finder and transfers were inevitably slow.
I bought a new USB 2.0 PCI card, with 4 external and 1 internal USB 2.0 connectors. Installed securely and correctly, it should be plug and play right? Wrong. Firstly I checked with a Compact Flash card that the USB 2.0 was working and it is - very fast upload of images to the Mac. Then I tried to move a group of files from the Samsung to the iomega drive and it started off transferring really fast, saying under one minute to perform the task. Then it froze, and slowly worked it's way up to 2hrs remaining. I had to crash out of it in the end. I tried a few simpler transfers, but it froze in finder each time. Now the Samsung drive is not even getting recognised by the Mac.
What am I doing wrong? Is there a shut down/eject order that I have not been doing? I usually just shut down the Mac with the HDDs on, and that has never been an issue for the iomega drive.
Any help or links appreciated. PSD

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
External drive controller chipsets vary greatly.
Along with this, and a big problem for PPC Mac users, is that the makers don't take PPC Mac architecture into consideration.
The first mistake is to rely on USB/USB 2.0 for connection.
Firewire is +the surest+ bet for an external drive for a Mac.
USB 2.0 is for WinPC machines, which often don't have firewire.
It is NOT a reliable connection method for hard drives.
Second, these ready made externals are often a problem with PPC Macs.
WD MyBook, Seagate FreeAgents, and others, are often just no good.
I don't see why the Samsung would be different.....
The best way to use an external drive, is to get a firewire drive enclosure kit that has an Oxford chipset, and then install the drive of your choice inside.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW91UAL1K/
These all have drives installed, but the case and controller is definitely no problem:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATAFW800_FW400USB
    I would return the drive.
