IDML File Help

Hello,
I have sent an IDML file to a client that was created in CS6 and they are unable to open it in CS5.5 getting the error "Cannot open the file ______ Adobe InDesign may not suport the dile format, a plug-in may that supports the file format may be missing, ort he file may be open in another application". I have no problems opening the IDML file, which was created by "saving as" an IDML file.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Did you allow it to export fully? How large is the file?
And, it’s also good to check with the recipient to make sure they’ve got a fully patched version CS5.5. I think it’s 7.5.3.

  • ID CS5.5 IDML file and missing plug-ins...need help

I'm currently running ID CS5.5 and trying to open a CS5 file, ( I think). However, even after converting it to a IDML file extension it just hangs and forces me to shut down. The whole purpose of this is there are several plug-ins including InBooklet SE that I no longer have access to. I'm unable to find the other plugins as well but need to be able to work in this file as the original creator. Any help or suggestions?

You can't convert to .idml by changing the file extension. You must export the file from the oringal version as a .idml file.
That said, you can use jongware's script to identify the version of the file, even if it won't open: Adobe Forums: [Ann] Identify Your InDesign File
That said, InBooklet SE was part of InDesign CS3, but I see it listed inthe plugins used. I also see a number of what look like third-party plugins listed, and that may be the problem. What's happening when you try to open the file?

  • Can't open IDML files on CS6 or 5.5 Please help

I just purchased and downloaded IDCS6. I have updated all the plugins. I "saved as" IDCS4 or old, a document I was working on. Now I can't open with either version of ID. Please help! How can I get this document to open? I am using Windows, 64-bit OS

I received the .idml fileyou sent, and it won't open here, either. It looks to me as if it may not be complete. Since you didn't send the .indd file I can't do much more.
I see though that you managed to get the file to export properly. In spite of it being listed now under the Save As menu, making .idml files is an Export function and it is a background task so even though the dialog closes and you can go back to work immediately, the file may not be ready. There is a samll inidcator icon of scrolling horizontal lines that appears on the right of the Menu bar while background tasks are in progress, and you can open the Background Tasks panel from Window > Utilities for a real progress bar. I suspect you may have simply tried to open the original .idml file before it completed.
As far as opeing as Untitled, that unfortuantely, is expected behavior, and it is a pain in the neck. You are creating a new file as far as ID is concerned, so it names it Untitled. When you save, you should probably use a new name to avoid overwriting the original .indd file.

  • I need help to open an .idml file after translating it with Dejavu!

    Hi everybody,
I'm not used to work with InDesign, I only have to check a big problem: I'm a translator and have been working the last 4 weeks on a InDesing-Projekt from German into Italian. I changed the format of the files from .indd into .idml an imported the three files into my Computer-Assisted-Translation Ptrogram DejaVu. I've been working well till now. Now I tried to export the first File and wanted to open the .idml file with Indesign... The program began to work, but then came a warning "syntax error". Please, is there anybody who knows the program better than I (the agency which should know everything about this kind of files gives up at the first problem)??? This is very important to me. I speak german an italian very good, my english is rudimental....
Thank yopu and have a good day (tel. +49-(0)9208 588316)
    Alessandra

Sorry for the delay, I had a lot of other stuff going on today. This kind of work is somewhat laborious so I put it off.
I needed to send you the file, because I don't understand what you mean with opening the zip file and so on...
An IDML file is just a .ZIP archive of a bunch of XML files.
In this case, it turns out the problem is pretty obvious. Some story files, instead of containing valid XML, contain "MATTONELLE".
Like this, in the Terminal on Mac OS X, but substitute as appropriate for Windows:
    $ ls -ld *idml

So, it's probably obvious what you should do with your tool to fix these...
u3cf is an example of a normal file. I sort the files by file size to find the ones that are far too small to be normal XML.

  • IDML file crashing InDesign...Need help!

    Hi Guys,
We are working in a studio full of Macs, some on CS4 and some on CS5.5, we have had a problem occur in the last week.
We are saving IDML files on CS5.5 and trying to open them up on one of our Macs running CS4 and it starts to open, stalls then crashes completely. We have tried opening it on another mac using CS4 and we have no problems at all.
The mac we are having the crashing issues with hasn't had any updates in the last week and we haven't had any other problems.
    Any ideas?
    Regards

Maybe a bad font. But if you post your crash report on Pastebin.com, NOT HERE, then put a link here, someone may be able to interpret it and see the cause.

By the way, Peter, I had meant to note. In the other thread you cited, you say:
    >

This kind of crash at that location often means a bad font, or so I've been told.
This is actually an incredibly common failure, and it is much much more generic than bad fonts. It could be caused by bad fonts, but it could be caused by almost anything.
This indicaets a program has tried to defeference a pointer whose value is zero. That is, some function was passed a reference to some part of the program's memory (typically pointing to some data structure. It could be a number, a string, an TexttFrame, another function, a file, really anyting), and instead of that reference being an address, it was zero. And the function didn't check to see if thie address was valid, it just tried to read from address zero. Which, under many operating systems, including OSX, generates a trap and causes a crash.
So it's necessary to look at the stack trace to see what function generated the error. And that function was probably called be some other function by anothre function etc., and the fault is probably further upstream. If, e.g., the IDML export code calls the system's fprintf() function with a null pointer, the crash might be in fprintf(), but it would be the fault of the IDML export code.
Sometimes the faulting address might be more unique. Like if the pointer not zero but say, 3. There probably aren't too many cases where a pointer gets initialized to 3 by accident, so it might usually be the same thing. But address zero is incredibly common. (So are fun ones like 0xdeadbeef and 0xfafababe and 0xcafecafe).
Cheers. I wonder what happened with bizcomm...

  • Can't open .idml file in cs5

My client created .idml file in CS5.5. I cannot open it in CS5 or CS4. I open the application, click open, select the document and NOTHING happens... no error message, no document, nothing. Help?
Here's the file if someone wants to give it a go: http://pdgrafiks.com/fileCopy.idml.zip
    It's a small file.

I'm having the same issue, however my file size is 2.5 MB, so it shouldn't be empty. File was 5.5, had them save as .idml file, and when I try to open I get the following message:
Cannot open "filename here" Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade to the latest version of InDesign.
Everything seems to be up-to-date, is there something I'm missing to be able to open this file?

  • When I save a CS6 InDesign file as an .idml file InDesign crashes and sends a report to Adobe.

When I save a CS6 InDesign file as an .idml file InDesign crashes and sends a report to Adobe.
When I restart InDesign the .idml file is in the directory as well as a locked InDesign file.
I cannot open the .idml file, instead I get the message:
Cannot open "" file. Adobe InDesign maynot support the file format,
a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing,
or the file may be open in another location.
I can however open an InDesign .idml file that was saved from InDesign CC software.
InDesign CC software is also unable to open the .idml file that I created in CS6.

It seems to be a corrupted IDML file. Does it happen with every file or only with that one.
What is the content of that file? Did you embed images or graphics or did you ink them? Size?
Maybe that this would help you: Re: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.

  • In Design CC Back saving IDML file is crashing CS6

I have done all the updates for CC and have the latest version, but when I try and export or save as an IDML file, and try and open the IDML file in CS6 it keeps crashing In Design.
    Please Help!!

Do you mean have I updated CS6 to the latest version? That would be a no, but I have just got off the phone to adobe and I think, the problem has been sorted file was perhaps corrupted, created a new in-design document in CC by moving the pages and then saved as IDML and that seemed to open in CS6. Very strange, working now so am happy

  • Is there anyone with CS4 that could convert my CS5 idml file to inx so I can open in CS3?

Is there anyone with CS4 that could convert my CS5 idml file to inx so I can open in CS3?  My school upgraded to CS5 and now I can't work on documents on my own computer at home. I want to work on a particular project at home but need it converted I do not own CS4 or know of anyone with it to help me.   The file is fairly simply layout and shouldn't have special features that would effect the down grade.  If you can help please reply or email me at   [email protected]
    Thanks

  • How to test an IDML file?

I have created an IDML package that is very basic. It has a couple of spreads, each with a single page and some guides on the page. Schema validation against the package schema passes. However, when I open the file in InDesign it tells me "Cannot open then file 'foo.idml'. Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that suports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."
It is not open in another application and helloworld-2.idml opens fine even through it fails validation on several counts.
I suspect there is something very minor "wrong" with my IDML file. However, given that the schema is not catching it; is there a way to determine why InDesign chokes on it? I don't see any log file, nor is there anything in the Windows event log. Does anyone know how to determine what it is about the file that InDesign can't handle?
    Thanks,
    Gareth.

It sounds like you've hand-coded an IDML file. This is something we can't help you with in this forum. I think you should ask in the InDesign SDK Forum.

  • InDesign CS5.5 freezes when creating an idml file

    Good Day All,
I have been using inDesign since it started and have never come across this problem. I have a file that I intially created in CS4, converted to CS5 and now CS5.5. I have been trying to convert it to an IDML file and EVERYTIME it hangs and freezes. It actually produces a file but non-useable. I have been struggling with this for the last two days.
    I have;
    removed cache recovery files
looked at all styles to ensure optical kerning wasn't on (seems like a common problem)
rebuilt the file and renamed it
replaced Adobe Garamond Pro with Garamond Premier Pro
    tried it on another machine
    Re-installed CS5.5
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with CS5.5 the document is about 11 pages long and packaged and zipped is 34.0Mb
I am starting to pull my hair out here!! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks!!
    Curtis

Thanks for the reply, but it didn't work.  I tried to move the jpg but as soon as I get to that page or click on it in the links panel, I automatically get an error code: 3 message and then the software just cascades from there.  When I try to relink the graphic in the links panel nothing happens.  I even get an error when trying to unembed the graphic.  I've tried just about everything.  I'm think that if maybe I could just delete that entire page without actually looking at the page, I may be able to recover the rest of the document.  This has been one of the biggest headaches I've ever had to deal with as far as software goes and I deal with it every day (I'm a developer).  Any other suggestions are more than welcome.
Oh, and I wasn't sure how to "open as a copy."  I made a copy of the file and tried to open it but it reacted the same as the original.  Perhaps I misunderstood your meaning?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • CS5 cannot open .idml file exported from CS6

I've seen this question before from people having problems with other versions of InDesign. I, too, am having an issue with plug-ins that do not allow me to open an idml file. I downloaded the script that verifies the version used to create the idml to be sure it really was made from CS6, not CS5.5. It's not an empty file as it is 3.3mb Interestingly, when the customer packaged the file it came up with no links. It's a 32-page document with lots of photos, graphics, etc. How it is possible that it would not have any links? Any suggestions short of having to upgrade to CS6 would be helpful. Thank you.

    Hi Peter,
I'm guessing it might have been a network corruption problem. She brought in her laptop, we made another .idml file and loaded it to a USB stick, then transferred it to my computer. The file opened just fine. And yes, she had pasted all her images, so we have her collecting the bits and pieces for me to review and relink everything. I believe I have the patch, but will double-check. Thanks!

  • Image location in IDML file?

I am creating an IDML file by using the properties from a MIF file. I have an Image object in MIF file. Its location is represented by using Left, Top, Height and Width. But in IDML file location representations are different. How can I include Image location in IDML file?

Have you read the specification? Try example 15!
Have you exported an sample Indesign document?
Coordinates are pasteboard (not spread) coodinates in units of points,
per section 10.3.3. You need not apply any transformation and can use
    the identity, ItemTransform="1 0 0 1 0 0." But you could do othre
    things if you wanted to.
Your PathPoint anchors will correspond to the 4 corners. So you'll use
Left for the X values of the upper-left and lower-left corners, top
for the Y values of hte upper-left and upper-right corners, and
sum Left+Width for the X values of the right corners and sum Top+Height
for hte Y values of the bottom corners.
This is pretty well-documented stuff. Please take the time to read the
    documentation before asking for help.
