IDVD freezes while burning

I had iDVD 5 and it worked fine for burning DVDs. But I upgraded to iDVD 6 and and am having some troubles. The first DVD I burned with idvd 6 was one with no video and just a slideshow. Now i'm trying to burn my second dvd that actually has video on it and iDVD always freezes when it gets to the end of "Process movies." I've tried twice now and it's quite time consuming because it takes about 4 1/2 hours each time, and it just freezes! Anyone now what's happening?

Have you searched this group? Seems someone had a similar problem, but I don't recall his/her solution. May be the .plist.
Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

I'm trying to burn a DVD and it gets to Processing DVD Menu (2 of 2)(I think that's the wording) and just freezes.
I've let it sit there for 10 to 20 extra minutes and nothing happens. I get the "beach ball" every once in a while yet nothing else. I can't force quit and the only way to get out of it is to hold down the power button until the MBP turns off.

  • IDVD freezes after burn

After many successful DVD burns, my iDVD has developed a problem! It only allows 2 DVDs to be burnt. Then, it freezes. The display is: "burn" highlighted with blue "task" bar complete. And, message is "cleaning up" followed by "done" underneath blue bar. However, at this point, I cannot cancel or close iDVD window. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Just to add to Sue's excellent advice ..... might also be that your burner is over heating after multiple burns. try allowing more time in between burns to avoid system freeze (that or invest in an ext. DL FW Burner).
You can make your own burner like I did from a pioneer S-Drive 110U, 111, or 112 mounted within a standard FW enclosure like this:

or you can buy one preconfigured for you:

  • IDVD freezes when burning

    Hi all,
My iDVD is playin up. I've created a beautiful movie (12mins long) but when i tell iDVD to burn it does all the processing and encoding but it freezes just before it starts burning. I tried to burn it 4 times and nothing I did helped. I did close down all the other programs not needed to free up CPU space but it didn't help.
I also had the problem of I was using a DVD-R which disk utility said was locked and unwritable but, in system profiler, the CD drive says it will burn DVD-Rs and that the media in it is a DVD-R and that it is writable. I dunno what's wrong. please help
    thanks,
    Sam

when I start the burning project until it gets to the audio, then i get the spinning disc icon and the application freezes. I right click on the idvd icon and it says the application is not responding, so I force quit...
Please don't 'panic' - it really HASN'T frozen. Let it alone and ignore the application is not responding thing - it's lying to you.
Encoding can take several hours and often seems to stall during the audio encoding process. Have patience and let iDVD do it's thing!

  • IDVD freezing during burn process

I was trying to burn my DVD project onto a disc and iDVD kept freezing during the middle of it. It just so happened to always freeze during step 2 of the process, but Im not sure if that is just a coincidence or not. Any suggestions at how to get the program to burn my project without freezing up in the middle ?
    Thanks
    I am using iDVD 4

Thanks dispatx.com, that page was of immense help. I found much of it very encouraging simply knowing that someone has gone through the exact same thing, missing deadlines, sleep, etc.
I gathered as much info as I could and have successfully burned a DVD image now using the "Easter Egg" hurz & pfurz. Why doesn't apple include that in the program?
I cleaned up my powerbook prior to burning with OnyX. I trashed the iDVD preferences. I created a new project in iDVD using the same footage I had exported from FCP as QT movies, not self contained. I included songs I downloaded from the iTunes store (debunking the myth that the protected songs foul up the burning process). I held down ctrl and clicked burn, named the image, and then it went to work.
    Timeline:
6:00am started step 1, 10 secondes later, step 2 begins.
9:00 Step 3, Asset Encoding begins (Hallelujah, I never could get to this step)
    9:50 Step 4 begins, mulitplexing
10:20 Image is ready and iDVD is asking me to name the image again, I finally figured out this gives me the option of burning several copies, I did and it only took another 15 minutes to create another image instead of starting the whole process over again.
10:40 I drop it into disk utility and burn a 3.7 GB DVD in 20 minutes.
Oliver Luker accurately observes and records CPU usage at each of the steps so that helped me know NOT to cancel even when Activity monitor showed iDVD as not responding.
I went with best performance because too many people were reporting over 60 minutes and best quality as not working well, and I need this DVD done. I had an extras section in the DVD that I yanked. But I don't understand why we are limited to less than 60 minutes. This angers me a bit and I'm determined to find a way to have a good looking DVD with over 60 minutes of footage that will burn through iDVD. I don't want to buy DVDSP, yet.
    Good luck everyone.

Upgraded to itunes 7.3 . Opened itunes and tried to burn a playlist. It began going through the usual steps, then started to burn the 1st song. Thats it. Freeze. I've trashed 3 cd's now. I have repaired permissions. Was looking for itunes preferences to trash but can't find it.
Anybody else having problems with the upgrade?

Never was able to get repaired.

  • IDVD is giving an error during multiplexing or it will force close while burning. Please help!

I've been using iDVD to burn videos for awhile now. This time around it is either force closing while burning or near the end it gives a error while multiplexing and will not continue. Is there something I can do to fix this? Or another program I can use to burn the videos to DVD.

Read Bengt Wärleby's post in this topic for possible causes: Multiplexing Error: Apple Support Communities.
Also follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Change iMovie project while Burning in iDVD?

I use iMovie to import and process football game clips from our games and scout games. I change some clips, add titles, etc., and then ship it to iDVD for making the .img file. This process works really well.
My question is once I start the .img burning process, can I close the source iMovie project and import a new set of clips (game) into a new project without harming the iDVD burn process?
I'm very hesitant to do this as I'm not sure of the relationship between the iMovie project and iDVD when burning the DVD/.img file. I don't want to harm the iDVD processes by going to another project. Yes, I know that I can probably recover quickly, but this is normally a time driven process done in the wee hours the morning after the football games. I don't want to have to recover and start anything over at that time of night.
My suspicion is that they are independent and I can import a second project while burning the first.
    Thanks

    ... I guess I got a bit dramatic there...
that is the question... (besides the actual "what is showtime?" in about 30min???)
I think, this is a typical Karl Petersen question..
    my knowledge stops at:
iDVD uses the .imovie file as a reference, to collect all items needed for conversion; the conversion itself is a step-by-step process (menu, audio, video...); if you now change anything WHILE encoding... e.g. change the ref.mov by editing the project, or, better, delete something (a music file)… then?!
that is a vry tricky process, a kind of "collaboration" as programmers would call it...- I'm no programmer, I'm a user: when finished, I quit iM, launch iDVD, tell my Cube "nitynight" and next morning (450MHz here), my .img is ready to burn on my disk....

  • Idvd keeps freezing during burn of slideshow

    Any suggestions?

    Hi
Can be a zillion things. Please tell what You've done - It's so very hard to guess.
    • Can it be so that there are more than 99 photos per SlideShow - iDVD limit
    • Free space on Start-Up hard disk. Less than 25Gb free space ?
    • photos used of a strange format as .bmp etc.
    • audio used in a strange format as .mp3, .wma etc
    • Does it freez - in iDVD test mode - or while burning DVD - or when DVD is played
    • DVD brand used
    • DVD type used
    • Burn speed - set down to ?
And many many more things need to be asked if You don't share a step by step description on what You've done to help us understand where it went wrong.

  • IDVD doesn't burn discs properly!

    Hi all,
First of all I'm new to this so if I've missed out any info please let me know. I've always downloaded a lot of films and in the past, have had no problem burning them to discs since I got my mac in 2006. I used to burn them using the "Create New Project" and add in movie, sort menu's etc, but after a while I realised there's no point in all that cause it takes longer and all I really want is the movie on a disc anyway. So I started using the "One Step DVD from Movie" and I would make the discs that way, which I never had any problems with either. I hadn't made any DVDs for a while, possibly 3 or 4 months and when I tried the other day it seems to go through the movie ok, converting the video and audio and then goes to burn the disc, which is where I have the problem. It normally goes to writing video out and things like that but the last couple of times I have tried to burn discs it goes to that as usual then spits out the DVD before going through the entire process. I then have to cancel the process and the DVD I was trying to burn is no longer usable because it seems to have written parts of the movie to it, but not the full movie so it's not possible to watch on a DVD player or even in the mac DVD player. It's very strange, I don't get any error message or anything coming up, it just spits out the DVD and then iDVD freezes and I have to force quit out of it. I'm wondering if it's maybe the version of iDVD that's the problem. Obviously as I've not used the iDVD for a while it will have been automatically updated via the Software Update which I run at least once a week. I'm unsure of the version the last time I used it to make a DVD but the version I have now seems to be the latest one for my system (version 6.0.4). After a few unsuccessful tries at making the DVDs using the One Step DVD, I tried to do it by creating a project first, but it seems to do the exact same thing, go through the whole process (which takes about 2 hours, sometimes longer) and then burn only part of it then I can't use the disc again. Please help, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Debz

Thanks for quick reply and I'm sorry about the long message, I was just trying to explain everything that had happened. Not touched the media at all since I got it, I didn't change any settings or make anything different from when I used to burn discs before. I have about 10GB free on my mac at this moment, but at the time I had about 30GB free, maybe just under. I have been reading other posts on here about discs not burning properly and a couple of the things that have been said is to not have any other applications open, which I didn't and have more than 15GB space free, which I always have had when burning discs.

  • MSI P35 Neo-F (MS-7360): Computer randomly freezes while playing games

    Hi there,
I have reached the end of my technical knowledge right now and I'm not even sure if this area of the forum is appropriate. The problem:
While playing higher-end games like Crysis 2, Anno 1404, Mass Effect 2 etc. my computer randomly freezes and the last few milliseconds of sound are being looped on my speakers (kind of like a buzzing sound).
By "freezing" I mean that my computer becomes unresponsive to any action other than pressing the Reset-Button or holding down the Power-Up-Button (no reaction to Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+F4, Alt+Tab, no mouse movement... you get it).
There's no exact timing as to when these freezes occur. The fastest freeze happened after less than a minute of playing a game, slowes one (just today after switching to my newer case with better cooling) took about 2 hours.
This freeze only occurs while my System is under load. No freezes while browsing the web, using office programs, listening to music or watching videos.
    System Specs:
        Mainboard: MSI P35 Neo-F (MSI-7360)
        CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @2.4GHz
        RAM: 4x 1GB DDR2-800 Corsair XMS2
Graphics: Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti, 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620W (upgraded from Xilence XP600, 600W)
New CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 13 Pro (upgraded from OEM Intel Boxed Cooler)
New Case: Zalman Z9 Plus w/ 4x 120 mm Fans (Upgraded from a Case with only 1x 250mm side Fan)
        2 Western Digital HDD (1x 2TB, 1x320 GB)
1 DVD Reader/Burner (unimportant for that error I guess)
        OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
        2 Screens: 1x 24" Asus VS248H and 1x 21" LG Flatron Wide W2240T
Since this error is bugging me for quite a while now and since this is not the first forum I'm trying to get help from, here's a list of steps i already took to get rid of it, obviously to no good use:
reinstalled games where the freeze occurred
updated all Drivers (including cleaning old versions in safe mode; also tried older drivers)
        updated BIOS to v1.A0
        Reinstalled Windows
bought new Case and CPU Cooler to improve Air Flow/Cooling
checked Seating of all components (took out, cleaned, reapplied thermal grease where neccessary, re-inserted)
cleaned old case of dust (obviously no problem in the new case, which is 2 days "old")
ran 7 sequences of Memtes86+ without any errors
ran Prime95 without any errors for about 45 Minutes
ran Furmark for 15 Minutes under full load (burn-in test) without any problems, even though my graphics card hit the 100°C frequency-cut level
ran Furmark and Prime95 simultaneously without any problems
took records of component temperatures and system voltages without noticing anything unusual (at least not after i switched to the newer PSU, which is about 1 Month old - yet didn't resolve the problem)
tested with cyclic removal of 1 RAM device to further rule out RAM malfunction
tested with only 2 RAM devices in dual channel mode (Slots 1 and 3)
tried to reduce RAM clock (800 MHz --> 667 MHz) to no avail
checked S.M.A.R.T. values of HDDs, no issues reported
        tested without any background programs
raised/lowered voltages to RAM, CPU and Chipset in BIOS to increase logic circuit stability/decrease heat production
I need to mention: After I transferred my system to the new case, i was able to play longer than average compared to my old case. So I am guessing that improper cooling was part of the problem, yet improving cooling obviously didn't resolve it.
Since these freezes are really annoying and nobody could help me resolve this so far, I'm hoping to find some new ways of narrowing down the problem or even getting rid of it here.
    Regards
    Sebb

Lets be realistic. A system with a 560TI is recommended to have a around 31Amps under full load, a CX500 would be sufficient.
Have you monitored your CPU and memory utilisation ?
As suggested before, test the GPU in another computer to see if the behaviour is the same.
Whew, I thought for a second there that my common sense had left me when I saw that 60-Amp-Post ^^
Yes, I monitored CPU and RAM usage, there is no recognizeable pattern to be seen and it almost never happens under full load.
I will see if a friend of mine can test my GPU on his computer, and I will test it underclocked right away.
Though one more question regarding that: Should I only underclock GPU Core Clock or both Core and RAM clock?

  • An error occurred while burning the disc.

I tried to burn some stuff onto a DVD today with my PowerBook. Here's the info on the burner:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E:
    Manufacturer: MATSHITA
    Model: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E
    Revision: DMP2
    Serial Number:
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
I bought some DVD's on sale at Radio Shack, and when I tried to burn a movie and a few photos onto a disc, the progress bar showed it starting to burn, then it stopped and I got this message:
"An error occurred while burning the disc. This disc cannot be used."
A little research here at the Apple forum brought me to this site:
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
And after downloading a little program called DVD Media Inspector, I was able to classify the DVD's I had bought as:
    "4TH CLASS MEDIA:
Pathetic garbage media, landfill material, about 0-50% success rate...."
OK, off to Mega Lo Mart, where I bought some nice, expensive Maxell DVD's.
Media Inspector doesn't see my fancy new DVD's. When I try to burn stuff using the Finder, I get the same result as before.
Getting desperate at that point, I located and downloaded updated firmware for my model of Matshita superdrive. I'm not sure what firmware is, and there was a free range one and a standard one, so I went for the standard one. There were dire warnings in the readme file about "flashing" a superdrive being on the same risk level as open heart surgery. I flashed my superdrive. (You can say that here, and it's not dirty.)
I also tried burning using iDVD, and after much preparation, it started to burn, then spit out the DVD. I tried three of the landfill DVD's and two of the Maxell ones. I'm out of things to try. Any ideas?
I have never tried burning DVD's before. Am I doing something wrong?

I tried again using iDVD's One-Step DVD making feature. It will let you make a one step from a movie file, and I had a .dv version of the movie I want to burn.
It encoded video for a while, encoded audio for a little while, then started to burn. The superdrive made some noises, then the DVD was ejected and I got an error message saying:
    "Burning Finished
Errors were found during the burning process"
I hit OK (though it really wasn't OK) and got another error message box. This one said:
    "Multiplexer error
    (some message about multiplexing problem)"
The message didn't make sense to me, and I was unable to remember it. What's a multiplexer? I would have guessed an avid movie-goer, but somehow I think that is not it.

    Hi
    Four thoughts
    • Brand and type of DVD/CD Media
    • Burn Speed ?
    • Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
    • Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
Brand and type of DVD/CD Media: MATTERS
    - Memorex, NoName and other Cheap brands - most probably works for other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO.
    I only use Verbatim
    - DVD-RW - usually do not work OK but with various kinds of problems. DVD+R is a more modern sort and use to give problems on older DVD-players
    I only use DVD-R
Burn Speed (in iDVD or alike): Matters
    • Best or Max - is not best
I set it down to x2 or x4 Max
Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
I use one WITHOUT Liquid but with brushes from time to time
Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
    - Due to that Mac OS X - is UNIX - it behaves likewise. It needs lot's of space on Boot / Start-Up Hard Disk for it's and the applications temp files.
I never go less than 25GB free space - If HD-Video material is used then 4-5 times more is a good thing.

  • New MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard 10.6) Freezes while playing Portal, WOW, etc,

I have the new macbook pro that came out February 2011 with Mac OS-X 10.6, and I have encountered multiple problems with the computer running sluggish and freezing up in some applications. For example while playing Portal, the computer will get extremely hot and everything will freeze while the fan slows down, then it will come back, and about 5 minutes later it does it again. Same thing happens with WOW and I'm sure with many other applications. Even will run slow while watching tv on Netflix. It's ridiculous and unacceptable. Is there a news release with a factory defect or an update available to fix this overheating problem? Thanks

Is there a news release with a factory defect
Not that I am aware of. Check Google or call Apple Care as you are still under warranty.
or an update available to fix this overheating problem?
User Tip: How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
Per your user manual: Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.
From MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface. Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.
    with Mac OS-X 10.6
Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.7 or you can go to Apple's download website to install the combo update. Also, update everything that is listed in Software Update that pertains to your computer.
