IDVD making projects copy protected

The last DVD I made using iMovie and iDVD made my finished project copy protected.  I did not choose to do that.  How can I remove the copy protection?  This is a personal movie that I want to share.

Hi Ziatron.
There are commercial programs that makes a Copy-Protection - but non is 100%.
iDVD and DVD Studio Pro - can not do this
• DVD Studio Pro - has a Copy Protection selection - but this is just a flag to the DVD-makers to remembering them to add this in the bulk burning process. So it doesn't do anything more.
For those that urge a disbelief - try a Disney DVD. They know what they do.

  • Copy Protected CDs and iTunes - long but important

    Hey all, I didn't search all the posts but I haven't seen much mentioned about this topice so I thought I would bring it to your attention. If this is a repeat, I apologize.
    The basic issue is this: some new CDs (especially from Sony) have a program on them that loads on the computer and will only allow you to load the songs as WMA files. This happened to me when I bought a copy of Switchfoot's new cd. It says right on the back that it will only work with Media Player but hey, I wasn't paying attention. Apparently this is not an issue is you are using a Mac.
    Anyhow, you cannot load these CDs into iTunes and therefore cannot load them onto your iPod. This has created a huge controvery over on the Sony boards and if you follow the link I will give you, you can see it. Switchfoot is a very popular band and a lot of people got hammered over this. I was lucky enough that my Christian store took the opened cd back after I explained the problem and I had to download it from the iTunes store. You lose a song this way but what can you do. I guess the new album by Cold Play is the same way but I am not a fan so I can't be sure.
    If you follow the Sony posts, when you get to the 6th page (I think), one of the members of Switchfoot posted and gave us a few ways to get around this. If you have NEVER put one of these copy protected cds into your drive, you do not have the software on your computer yet. He describes a program you can download and then use it after you put the cd in the drive. If you have inserted one of the cds, the little program is hiding somewhere on the computer and that fix will not work.
    You can copy it to Media Player, burn it to a cd, and then load it to iTunes. But.........here you are making copies of copies and are going to lose sound quality. How much and will it be noticable, I have no clue.
    Someone on the board said Sony is aware of the uproar and will have a version of iTunes that will be able to import these cds sometime in November (it is actually Apple that is doing I would guess). It all started because Apple refuses to give some kind of code to the large labels so they made the copy protection so iTunes will not recognize the cd (no matter how many time you put it into your drive......believe me I tried over and over on Tuesday until I found the Sony boards by doing a Google).
    If this is news to you all, I am glad. If a repeat, sorry but I wanted to make sure all iPod owners (especially those of us with PCs) to be aware of this. There is a small alert near the spine of the jewel case that says "Copy Protected" or something like that and then on the back on the bottom it talks about only being able to use in Media Player.
    Some who pre-ordered the disk online did not get the cd with the protection and apparantly some got some copies in retail stores that didn't have it also. I looked at all 400 copies the Christian store I bought it from had and they were all protected. Switchfoot is a Christian rock band but have had tremendous success crossing over into the rock genre.
    One last thing, I guess the Dual Disk version will work in iTunes., at least that was the latest I had read.
    Here is the link to the Sony Board on this topic and if you all can't find the one post about how to get around this, let me know and I will find it and post it here for you.
    http://forums1.sonymusic.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/716102313/m/1331071454/p/1
    Good luck. I don't know how to make the links work on this board but you can copy/paste it into your browser window.
    Hope this helps some of you,
    Mike

    After using Macs for a number of years at both school and work, I finally ordered an iMac G5 of my own. When the DualDiscs came out I bought a few because I wnated all the content I could get. Attempting to play them on my iMac at work however, proved problematic. The audio side would spin for a few seconds then eject. I was slightly annoyed, but settled for playing the DVD audio versions of the albums as I worked. In my car stereo, the audio would work, but any other player it would not.
    When my personal iMac came, I expected the same problem- only the DVD side would play. Imagine my surprise when every DualDisc I attempted to rip (Switchfoot, Bruce Springsteen, Rob Thomas, Ben Folds, The Wallflowers, Oasis, David Gray) in iTunes was read and successfully ripped.
    So I wonder this- is it as much a problem with older Superdrives not being able to read the thicker discs as anything else?
    Or am I an anomaly

  • Failing to import my own audio files (not copy protected files)

    I'm having trouble getting external audio files to import properly into GarageBand, most specifically MP3 files. These aren't copy protected audio files, these are files I've created myself in other programs and unprotected MP3 sound effects clips downloaded from various web sites.
    Here's what happens, I open GB and create a new project. I find the audio file that I want to start with, an MP3 file that plays just fine in QuickTime and iTunes. I drag the audio file into GB to create a new track. GB begins a conversion/import process or whatever it does to be able to edit an MP3 file. I see the progress bar filling up as it does this. When it is complete a new track is created with the MP3 file's name, however the track itself is empty. I don't see any content and there is no audio when I hit play. I don't get any sort of error message either.
    I've tried playing with the MP3 file settings, changing them to mono, adjusting bit rates, compression, etc. but every time I try to import into GB this same process happens with no results. These audio files I'm creating play in all my other audio playing apps, so I'm confused as to what could be wrong.
    Can someone tell me how I can get GB to import these files properly? Thanks in advance!

  • Copy-Protecting DVDs against piracy in DVD Studio Pro; or otherwise ?

    Copy-Protecting DVDs against piracy in DVD Studio Pro; or otherwise ?
    I'm about to start encoding to MPEG2 a very important project that I've edited in Final Cut Pro.
    It is vital that it cannot be copied by the client or I could lose a lot of money.
    In the past this has never been a concern, but in this case it is very important.
    What is the best way to prevent a client/people from copying your DVDs?
    Is there anything I can do within DVD Studio Pro or is there anything the Replication house can do at the Glass-Mastering stage?
    I'm sure this topic has been covered, but a quick search found nothing.
    Thanks guys.

    Common problem but no easy answer. It's simply too easy to get around.
    If you want to prevent finished master disks being copied in the same way commercial disks are then you will need to get them made at a duplication facility. Not cheap. You can't do it in DVD studio, it's to do with the disk burner.
    On a feature film it is very important to prevent copies of work in progress. What a lot of cutting rooms do is make dvd's with the name of the person burnt in and a copy number. Often a large X with 30% opacity is put in the middle of frame.
    This can't stop copies being made but at least you will know where they came from. It also seems to make the person who's name is burnt in take more care.
    Sorry but thats the best I can offer.

  • Fillable forms question - FrameMaker to PDF - Without losing copy protection options

    Hello,
    I'm looking for a solution that will allow us to integrate fields in a Chapter Review-style question area where users can comment their answers (instead of using StickyNotes). It must disallow printing/copying etc to meet content protection requirements. I've dug through all of my options and can't seem to find any viable method without allowing the "Edit Content" option which allows users to copy the content.
    We're currently using FrameMaker 9 but will be jumping to TCS5 soon.
    As an example, we would want something like the following question, which exists in a FrameMaker document, to be commented on:
    2. Which DID/DNIS mapping is recommended for mapping a single extension?
    Thank you in advance for any assistance with this.

    > It must disallow printing/copying etc to meet content protection requirements.
    ebook format copy protection is largely an illusion. Leaving aside the availability of euphemistically named "password recovery" software, the widespread availability of low-cost (often bundled free) OCR software means: If you can see it, you can recover the text, unless it's heavily CAPTCHA'd.
    Even if the user is blocked from reading the computer's frame buffer (i.e., prevented from using the PrintScreen key on Windows), most cell phones now have cameras with more than sufficient resolution for full text recovery. Some users even know how to turn off the flash .
    If the supposedly eyes-only document is available on the web, I would not be the least bit surprised to learn that one or more search engines has already OCR'd and indexed every word in it (you can be sure that the NSA's has).
    Managers asking for copy protection need to realize that they are making the authoring task much harder for little benefit, and often creating pointless annoyance for end users. Copy protection might briefly deter casual copiers, but is no obstacle at all to anyone the least bit tech savvy.
    If copy prevention really matters, each copy of the document needs to be computer-generated for the specific licensed end user, with user-customized, easily traced content.
    All that aside, and assuming management can't be dissuaded on the copy protection issue, does TimeSavers support insertion of form fields while preserving security settings?

  • Copy Protection without DLT - Link does not work

    I'm trying to find out how I can protect DVDS with Encore. Or if anyone knows of reasonably priced software to do this. I see there is a link to something called, Protection without DLT, but the link does not work....
    Help!
    Jessica

    CSS keys are only licensed to replicators, player manufacturers, etc. so it is highly unlikely that there will ever be a free solution for creating encrypted DVDs.
    CSS encryption is worthless, by the way.  It has been compromised for over a decade.  There are more complex copy-protection methods available that work by creating malformed structures on the DVD meant to confuse "ripping" programs.  However, they are an additional cost from third parties and, more significantly, they run the risk of making your product incompatible with older players or with some computer DVD-ROM drives or software players.
    Your replication facility can tell you which additional copy-protection methods they offer and what their cost is.

  • How did my own video become copy protected?

    I just copied some AVI files that I'd recorded with a Canon S60 digital camera. I opened the files using QuickTime Player (QuickTime Pro 7.0.4), trimmed some of them, and saved them as .mov files.
    I then attempted to place the newly-saved movies into iDVD and received a message that I couldn't do so because this was "copy protected video."
    Now, when I open the converted files with QuickTime Player, the Save, Save As.., Export, Copy, and Trim to Selection options are all dimmed.
    To make matters worse, I uninstalled Flip4Mac, in case that was interfering, and now when I open the files in QT Player, the video is blank. (It still shows and plays properly when previewed in the Finder, however.)
    I can't go back to the original files, because I deleted them from the camera card and from my hard drive once I had "clean" QuickTime versions.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks...

    Hi Eustace,
    Thanks for the suggestion but it doesn't work. I go to Users/myself/Library and there is only a file named Preference Panes and that file is empty. There is no plain Preferences file.
    I then did a search in my Finder for "mouse" in the file name and no .plist files came up. Here's what did:
    DOMMouseEvent.h (haven't a clue what this is but it originates in the Developer files and there's 2 identical files)
    mouse_preferences.html (this originates in the Audacity program and I've never touched it)
    preferences_mouse_extended.png (originates in Audacity too, doesn't open)
    mouseevt.tex (looks like a blank page and doesn't open. Originates in the Developer files.)
    and
    XF86MiscGetMouseSettings.3 (both of these originate in the Developer files)
    XF86MiscSetMouseSettings.3
    I have restarted my computer, my mouse, my keyboard. This is really driving me nuts! lol It is also grabbing files on my desktop and moving as I move the cursor...which is NOT good at all. If it's not grabbing a file and in a blank space on my desktop, it grabs like it wants me to select a portion of the screen for a screenshot! Truly bizarre.
    Could it be that my wireless mouse is simply "kaput" and I have to buy a new one? It never dawned on me that it could happen but...
    Thanks again for your help. I'll keep trying things.

  • Inserting Copy protection

    I am relatively new to Premier Pro, but I believe that when compiling a movie that it is possible to insert some form of copy protection system.
    If this is the case, could someone inform me how to go about doing this. I can find nothing in our users manual about doing this.
    We would like to be able to have the project completed and burnt to a DVD sometime today if possible.
    David

    Don't bother asking in Encore about copy protection on a burned disk... it is not possible
    The only way to do copy protection (which is done in Encore) is to create a DLT Tape output with a "special flag" which is then sent to a replication house
    That replication house then inserts the copy protection code into the file you send... creates a glass master... and then will PRESS, not burn, your DVD
    This is the same way the big Hollywood studios do copy protection... and it is not cheap... and it also doesn't really work, since there are products that remove CP from pressed discs

  • DVD +Copyright/copy protection

    I am a sports videographer. I use Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 to edit and burn game dvds for my customers. My customers are telling me that they are unable to take clips off my dvds to create highlight dvds or video files to send to college coaches on the internet because my dvds are somehow "copyright protected" or copymaking proof signal embedded or whatever the technical term is for what is keeping them from achieving their project. I am not wittingly clicking on any feature to make this happen on purpose. I tried to find the problem and solution in the manual but could not find anything. I hope I am describing my dilemma correctly. Is there a way to disengage this feature so that my customers can do anything they want with the footage on the dvds I make for them?  Thank you for your help.

    Welcome to the forum.
    As ATR states, PrE cannot create a DVD-Video with Copy Protection. No burned DVD-Video can have Copy Protection, as such, but only replicated DVD's, and PrE is not capable of producing such material, even if one is going to a replication house. That is not the issue here.
    Now, are you providing the clients with DVD-Video (with the VIDEO_TS folder structure, to be played on a computer with DVD software, or from a set-top DVD player hooked to a TV), or are you providing DVD-Data discs, where you are just Copying the AV files to a DVD disc, for distribution? The discs would look the same, but have different folder structures burned onto them.
    How are your clients trying to extract the files? With a DVD-Video, the media files will be in a VOB container, and those might need to be ripped from the DVD-Video, to be used. PrE can do that ripping, providing that the DVD-Video is 100% DVD-compatible. The VOB's created by PrE should be 100% DVD-compatible. Not all NLE (Non Linear Editor) programs CAN Import and work with VOB's. In those cases, other software is needed to rip the MPEG-2 DVD AV files from the VOB containers, to Import and edit those. This might mean an additional step for the clients, but that will depend on the software that they have access to, and might differ, client to client.
    As a test, though limited to PrE, I would take one of your DVD's, Copy the VIDEO_TS folder to an internal HDD, then Open a New Project in PrE (NTSC, or PAL DV would be the desired Project Preset, and either Standard 4:3, or Widescreen 16:9, depending on which you shot), and then Import the VOB's into that Project. Do you get any errors? Remember, that will ONLY tell you, if you have created the VOB's, such that PrE can Import those. Depending on the clients' software, they might, or might not be able to use the VOB's directly.
    Good luck, and sorry to add more questions to ATR's, but the answers to all, might tell the story.

  • Changing TV Standard - CRASH! Opening iDVD'04 project  - REVISITED

    I raised this some time ago:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7488339#7488339
    Basically opening an iDVD '04 project in iDVD '08 fails. Either hangs or quits.
    This still happens with 7.0.3. despite the fact that Apple support acknowledged the error over 6 months ago.
    Have emailed the first line people on the case but last time I tried that I never got a response, I suspect they have left.
    Anyone know of a general email address I can use, I do have a case number.
    I have not tried the Archive option yet as suggested by someone in referenced thread.

    As far as I can see, your question was answered in your earlier thread.
    iDVD 4 is pretty old, and much has changed in iDVD 7/8.
    I would suggest using your copy of iDVD 4 to complete the project.

  • Set Copy Protect?

    Any idea how I can turn ON copy protection for a Quicktime file? There used to be a utility that did this, but what I've found doesn't seem to work with OS 10.5 (or Intel procs?). I also haven't found anything helpful in the xcode tools.
    The QT no copy bit would be fine. DRM sounds interesting too. Really, just how to go about enabling that?
    thanks
    it really isn't necessary to point out that copy protection can be bypassed. My search here indicated that many times over.

    There is no "copy protection" available in QuickTime files. Best you can do is to make them "un-editable" via AppleScript. Those that get a copy of your QuickTime .mov file can only view it. They can't export or edit it.
    There are pricey applications that can use the "Media Key" (password) feature of QuickTime:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/QT4WebPage/samplechap/special -8.html
    The link above shows some other methods for making it difficult for viewers to "steal" your QuickTime files.
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/F/index.html
    One of my QuickTime files that is saved as "un-editable". It also uses a "skin" track so viewers couldn't use screen capture software to make a copy.

  • Basic copy protection?

    How can I add some basic copy protection to my published
    captivate files?
    I don't really know what techniques are available for this.
    Can I have the flash file prevent itself from playing if not
    downloaded from or connected to the website? Can I have it check a
    cookie? Is there some basic way of putting flash on the html page
    that prevents users from being able to link to it directly or copy
    it? Is there a way to prevent caching?
    Are there any down-sides to this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ari

    OK, now I have this working AFAIK.
    Can anyone see a way for users to get around this?
    I'll paste the code below if anyone wants to implement this
    in their own projects.
    jbradley88 was right about the _root reference being needed.
    quote:
    You might try appending _root. to all references and see if
    that helps (as in _root._url and _root.getURL and
    _root.unloadMovie)
    He was also right about the need for using
    unloadmovie instead of geturl. It I use geturl, a user can download
    the swf file and play it back locally b/c they can ignore the
    security warning. If I use _root.unloadmovie() then the movie
    unloads even if downloaded and played back locally.
    Also, I was using "FALSE" and "TRUE" as boolean values for
    variables before and it didn't work. Seems flash wants them in
    lowercase instead.
    I just replaced the actionscript in the preloader that
    shipped with Captivate with this code:
    //Check to see that it is playing from mywebsite.com domain
    //just set the url to your domain
    //The localURL's are for allowing the movie to be previewed
    on the local machine it was made on
    //just set the variables to reflect your folder structure
    okToPlay = false;
    siteURL = "
    http://www.mywebsite.com";
    siteURL2 = "https://www.mywebsite.com";
    localURL1 = "D:\\captivate working folder\\Published";
    localURL2 = "file:///D:/captivate working folder/Published";
    localURL3 =
    "file:///D:/captivate%20working%20folder/Published";
    if ((_root._url.substr(0,siteURL.length) == siteURL) ||
    (_root._url.substr(0,siteURL2.length) == siteURL2) ||
    (_root._url.substr(0,localURL1.length) == localURL1) ||
    (_root._url.substr(0,localURL2.length) == localURL2) ||
    (_root._url.substr(0,localURL3.length) == localURL3))
    okToPlay = true;
    if (okToPlay == false)
    _root.unloadMovie();
    //Called when the preloader displays, useful if you need the
    size of the movie
    function initialize(movieWidth:Number, movieHeight:Number)
    function onProgress(loadedBytes:Number,totalBytes:Number){
    var percentDone:Number = Math.round((loadedBytes /
    totalBytes) * 100);
    //Load 20% before starting movie.
    if(percentDone > 20)
    this.done = true;
    percent_txt = percentDone+"%";}
    function isDone():Boolean{
    //by default the preloader will show until all frames are
    loaded
    //this function can override this bahavior
    if(this.done)
    return true;
    else
    return false;}
    Now, AFAIK, when I publish Captivate files using this
    preloader they'll only run from my domain or from the local machine
    they were edited on (for previewing).
    Thanks for the help,
    Ari

  • Copy-protecting a DVD studio pro (DVDSP)

    I am new to DVDSP and wanted to check that I have properly copy-protected an authored DVD that I created.
    (NB I realise that dedicated hackers will be able to copy it, but I did want a basic form of protection).
    This is what I've done so far. When authoring the project I ticked the box that says that only one copy of the DVD can be made, and then successfully burnt the project.
    From this DVD I've just created, how many copies can I now create? Is it just the one? Or can I create as many copies as I like, but each copy cannot be copied? Or, maybe none of the above answers?
    Your help for a novice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    J

    As Jeremy indicates all you did was create the flags. Protected discs must be made by replication, as opposedto "burning." however, there are now some processes out there that put pretty strong anti-copying protection on burned discs. I have one vendor who does my short runs for me.

  • Copy Protected DVD's?

    We use Final Cut Express and iDVD to create event DVD's, however, we have had some people make duplicates of our work, inhibiting sales.
    Anything we can do to make the DVD's copy-protected? Any other ideas?

    DVD Copy-protect
    Hi
    No there is non.
    The most common solution is to put a loggo that stays on the full movie.
    eg. Copyrighted. Or "Made by " etc.
    Not even if You buy FinalCut Studio and get DVD-Studio Pro. You will not get this.
    The Copy-protection in DVD-Studio Pro is just a falg set to allert DVD-producers
    to make this in DVD-burning Companies.
    There is such protections to Commersial materials and to astronomical costs.
    And one can figure to what need, when there are no really secure Copy-protection.
    What also is possibly is to apply some uniqe-ness to each DVD, than log who got which one
    then if an illegal copy can be obtained it can be traced back to whom let it to be copied.
    One can only plead to respect the Copyrights

  • Sony (Columbia Records) copy protection

    I grow tired of waiting for Kate Bush's Aerial to show up on iTunes. I bought the two CD pak at Best Buy. I never connected Columbia with Sony, so I didn't give it a second thought. I launched iTunes on my Windows XP Professional (SP2), the import process continued without warning. No software was downloaded to my machine, so I thought I was golden. Until I looked and saw that every other song was 3K (or 739:00 minutes long in iTunes). I made several attempts to import the CDs all fail. However, I was able to import into iTunes on my iBook G4 without failure. All tracks converted flawlessly. Sony and Apple better get their act together or the next revolution will be televised... on an iPod.

    Kate Bush is on the EMI, not Sony, label.
    For what it's worth, I successfully imported Aerial into iTunes without any problems.
    The only "copy-protection" on the EMI Canada release of the record was the following notice on the back of the CD's booklet:
    This recording and artwork are protected by copyright law. Using Internet services to distribute copyrighted music, giving away illegal copies of discs or lending discs to others for them to copy is illegal and does not support those involved in making this piece of music - including the artist.
