If CD-R's no longer play read this as possible fix

Hi,
After going round and round with Applecare and CompUSa the
store that sold me my eMac 1.0 ghz (stock 128mb ram) 40 gb HD.
Issue was no longer able to play any type of burned CD's or burn CD's (photos/music etc)
Comp USA at point of sale upgraded the ram (at my request and purchase) ti 1GB of Ram (two 512 sticks) well on the last contact with Applecare A hardware test was run (use your included Emac (or Imac ) Hardware test cd , one stick of ram
failed and I got a error code and
that read:
* eerror* /3/4/: Dimm1?J1601 (top slot of two for ram)
Applecare refused to take responsibility for the ram as it was not Apple Ram, Comp USA failed to take responsibilty
for the failed ram as I did not purchase a extended warranty for ram that had a lifetime warranty, fortunately the service person gave me the 128mb stick of ram, I changed out the bad 512 mb stick of ram, inserted the 128 mb ram (now have 640mb and guess what CD-R's now play and I can also burn to Cd-r (Comp USA quoted me over $400.00 for service
data back up and new ram. I spent zero. I do have to go back
after the manufacturer of the failed ram (good luck) but if I can locate them the 512mb stick of ram cost $130.00 so hopefully I can recoup that. Comp USA kindly said they would help me ID the manufacturer's location and customer service
of course being installed 3rd party ram I have no box or package just a receipt but I and the family are happy!
We have 4 macs. I will not waste my money on Applecare
though in the future.
Hope this helps as I noted about 30 similiar posts with CD-R
issues in this forum
Best of Luck!

dwwave,
I'm not aware of any OS X system setting or user preference that would distinguish between a commercial (pressed) CD and a burned (dye layer) CD-R. The is a physical difference in that the two types of discs reflect the CD laser LED light slightly differently; commercial pressed discs are in general more reflective. If there's a thin coating of grome or dust on the CD optics, especially the lens, that could account for reading commercial CDs but failing on burned CD-Rs. A pass or two (or three) with a CD lens cleaner kit may suffice to restore operations. If a lens cleaner doesn't help, then by all means contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider since the Mac is under warrenty. If the drive's LED power putput is failing, that would give the same symptoms and no amount of lens cleaning would help; replacement of the drive would then be called for.

Do you use Glimmerblocker, or any other advert/content/security blocking/filtering software ?
Yes, I use Sophos.  But, recall that with another browser (Chrome), video plays fine.  So the issue is not with Sophos per se.
Safari-Preferences-Extensions is set to OFF ?
I just turned Safari-Preferences-Extensions to OFF.  Video will sill not play.

check System Preferences - Flash Player - Storage tab to see that 'allow sites to save information..." is on.

I did this, but, I an unable to delete all the Site Data; I get an error box:  "Flash Player was unable to delete all local storage. The files may be locked by another program. Close all browsers or restart your computer, and try again."
I get this error even with all the browsers are closed.
I think this points to our bug:  Only in my Mac OS user profile and only in Safari there seems to be some Flash Player file which is either 'open' or 'locked' to deleting.
Where could that pesky file be????

My videos on iPhoto no longer play ... the message reads OSStatus error -54.    anyone any idea what this might mean?

    Hi Terence,
    FWIW...
I just restored my entire iPhoto library from Time Machine.  I'm running Yosemite.  After opening iPhoto for the first time after restoring the DB, it asked me to confirm my library location.  Then it proceeded to update all the thumbnails.  After this was completed, I observed what the OP reported: all photos work normally, but all videos were a.) missing thumbnails; and b.) yielding this error code when attempting to open.
HOWEVER.  Doing a Reveal in Finder showed the videos on disk, and they were playable.  After quitting iPhoto and restarting it, it *again* said it was updating thumbnails, and now all the videos both have the thumbnails and play correctly from within iPhoto.

You would call Apple Support, for which you would probably be charged for the support.
Note that just because those CDs work with your old computer doesn't mean that it's still not an issue with those CDs and the burner in your newer system. Some CD brands just don't work well with some optical drives. If you haven't tried a different brand, and if you're using CD-RW trying CD-R, I would suggest you give that a try just to eliminate that possibility.
    Regards.

I have similar problem, my apple tv which has always worked properly with my Samsung tv will no longer play any audio after the latest 5.1 upgrade. Very frustrating as it was working perfectly before. I am starting to not trust apple upgrades until proven for example ios6 on iPhone with that stupid map app instead of google maps.
I just want to buy and hear my iTunes music and videos on my apple tv, could before cant now. Thank you apple. Time to pack up the apple tv and start torrenting without the ios-bs.
    Disheartened apple fan.

Welcome to the  discussion forums.
Try going to synching in the sources menu on your tv and selecting 'change itunes library', when it gives you the passcode check itunes to see if the tv is showing up as a new device, if so try entering the pass code. It may be that your tv is seeing itunes as a different library because of a recent upgrade.

  • Movies no longer play in iTunes or ATV

I installed the software update for iTunes 11.1.5.5 and now movies (m4v from Handbrake) stored on my PC no longer play in iTunes or Apple TV. These have been playing fine for years, so I'm guessing that 11.1.5.5 has something in it that suddenly doesn't like this format anymore. I can still see my whole library in ATV, covers and all, but when I hit play, I just get the spinning icon. In iTunes, it's just a black screen with the timer staying at zero. Music still plays fine on both devices. I'm frustrated at myself to no end for installing the update. As well, I cannot fine a single complaint of this same issue. I'm hoping that might be because there's a simple fix (long shot I know). Anyone else having issues? Any ideas? Please remember that this file format has been playing without issue for years, so please don't suggest that I change the format unless you know for sure that is a new concern with playback. Thank you.

Well, in case anyone is reading this and willing to offer ideas, I did uninstall iTunes 11.1.5.5 and re-installed the last full version I had saved 11.1.1.11 (not really sure of the last version I was on before everything stopped working). Nothing was lost during the re-install (all libraries, playlists and such are still as they were....I was expecting this not to be the case). However, this process didn't change the video playback problem. I'm at a loss of what this could be. I went through the audio issues mentioned on another thread and did the recommendations, with no change. I did manage to find a few videos that still do play. The only difference I could see is that they are listed as "low complexity" and in stereo. I suppose it probably is an audio thing, though I have no idea why it's an issue now, when it never has been in the past. Please help. Thank you.

  • Video will no longer play, cannot add video content either.

Since this afternoon, iTunes video will no longer play. Not movies, not TV shows. I checked and music and podcasts still play. I thought it might be a conflict between purchased video vs video I added from my DVDs, but no such luck. Purchased content will not play. Nor can I add any new video, whereas I added a new TV show episode this morning.
If I go into the iTunes LIbrary file and select a video and choose "Play with Quicktime" the video plays just fine. But if I select "Play with iTunes" nothing happens. At all. Not even an error code. It's like I didn't select anything. If I try to add content by the keystroke "command O" and choose the file … again, nothing. No error. Just no response at all. When I open that file on my computer, select "Play with Quicktime", then choose "Share with iTunes" inside Quicktime I do finally get an error. "This file cannot be shared (error 206)". I looked up this error code and found this: "The filename or extension is too long." This does not make sense. The file names are fine and the extensions are exactly what I always use to add content to iTunes.
So it's like the entire video portion of iTunes has ceased to function. Any clues?
    iTunes 10.4.1

There are a g-zillion posts sharing your problem... but still no answer from Apple. The odd thing is that it is not affecting all of us.
I share your problem and it's doing my head in... if somebody mentions the 5 bloody R's again...!!!
Before updating to 1.2, ask yourself... how bad do you you really want Tetris????

  • Lots of my music will no longer play after latest update

    Hello,
I have a lot of music that will no longer play in my iTunes after the last update.  it doesnt happen with all my music, but a lot of it, and as far as i can tell, movies and tv shows are still good.  when i click on the song, it just skips forward over a lot of songs that it cant play until it gets to the next one that it can play.  to make things stranger, i synced my iPad to my iTunes, and the ones that cant play in my iTunes will play on my iPad.  when i try to open the song using QuickTime player, i get the following error: error -2002 a bad public movie atom was found in the movie
what is a bad movie atom and why am i getting the error when trying to play an audio file, and why wont they play in my iTunes but will on my iPad.
    System: Win7 Ultimate 64bit AMD A10 8GB RAM
    iTunes : 11.4.0.18
    QuickTime : 7.7.5
    any ideas?
    thanks

The contacts is saved on Google or Backup Assistance (Whichever you are using) and you can use ES File Explorer like I posted at http://community.vzw.com/t5/Android-Apps/Simple-way-to-Backup-apps-for-Hard-Reset/td-p/658707 , so you really wont loose anything but apps data...
BUT, I am not saying that you do this if that is your only issue...  I was just pointing out that this is a good ideal to do with any Major Updates..
If the contacts isnt linked again you should get the option to link them again once the OS boots, normally it checks and then prompt to link again..

  • About 1/3 of my 4100 tunes will no longer play.  Please help!

Over the past year I have spent countless hours painstakingly adding appropriate track information, cover art etc. I like the tracks to be attached to the original album, not a best of. I also have a lot of extended versions, remixes etc which then have to be attached to the specific 12" or cd-maxi single etc and a lot of hard to find - hard to attach stuff. Needless to say - I don't want to do it again.
Anyway - I just noticed that a large quantity of tunes (looks like about 1/3 of the library) will no longer play. Double click on them and nothing happens. No cover art - it's as if the song is not there. A look at the "get info" shows the track in the right place with everything pointing to where it should be ... but no play. To add insult to injury, I can't get them back by double clicking on the track itself in Explorer. It still will not play. And these songs are not corrupt. I have been playing them for some time now without issue. How can I save my library and information and get these tracks to play again.
Side note: this has happened before, usually after an iTunes update and typically with only a few tracks, never this widespread.
    Please help!

I have made it a standard practice to keep a copy of all music files - tracks under the Album -- at a separate folder location.
Do you have such a back up location of your music tracks? If you do, I'd suggest to try this:
Delete all tracks, that are NOT playing, belonging to one Album in iTunes. Then locate the folder in your backup location where this Album's tracks are located, and ADD this folder to iTunes. Then check to see if these play OK.
If they do, then repeat the process for all the rest.

  • Help please: iTunes will no longer play downloaded songs

ITunes will no longer play songs that I've downloaded from the iTunes Music Store. It used to play them, but now it won't play them at all. It will play only songs in the library from my CDs. I only have these downloaded songs on one computer, the same as I've always had. I can see the files in the folder My Music/[artist]/[album]. I have QuickTime 6.5.2 and iTunes 4. I don't know of anything that's changed on my computer since the songs were working.
    1) Is the problem that it's an old version of iTunes?
    2) If I switch to a newer version, will I lose all my downloaded songs?
    3) If the version of iTunes isn't the problem, any ideas about what could be wrong?
Please help! I've only had iTunes for a few months and have barely been able to use it. (I can't understand why it would become so outdated so quickly.) Thanks in advance!

Back up your purchased music before you upgrade, I've read at least 5 cases where purchased music has just gone.....missing.
That is not supposed to happen, didn't happen to me or thousnds of other iTunes users, but you don't want to be the 6th person, do you?
There are two things to try before you upgrade:

  • After upgrading iTunes I can no longer play my songs.  It says that "The song  ________ could not be used because the original file could not be found.  Would you like to locate it?"   I have NO clue where to look.

After I recently Upgraded iTunes I can no longer play any movies or songs.  It says that "The song ______ can no longer be playe because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"   I have no clue where to look as I'm not tech savvy.  I did look in previous itunes libraries file and it's empty.  Any and all help is appreciated.

The links below illustrate how your iTunes should look if you use default settings in preferences.  If you don't use those settings then you have to know what you're doing.
Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/13025536 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/17457605
The above links also illustrate the Media folder and its subfolders.  Look for a file in there in the logical structure by folder artist and album.  If you're lucky, linking one file will get an offer to link others and it iwll all come together again.
I see you are running OSX 10.5.8  it would help to know which version of iTunes you use now and which one you used before.

  • Itunes will no longer play some of my songs

Any info will be appreciated. I no longer can play my converted songs in itunes after last update. Everything was working fine until the update. itunes will ask where there located but after i show where there at. it still won't play them. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP!!! I about to throw itunes and my ipod out the window.

Sorry, it won't work. Won't even open the file.
It shows me where it is, but when I click on the file, it only gives me the "open"/"cancel" options. If I click on "open" it takes me back to my iTunes library but without the selection. Shows me the song but gives me that exclamation point and says it can't be played.

  • Itunes will no longer play one album.

I have an album, which I was previously able to listen to through itunes is no longer working. I tried reloading the album, but the problem still persists. I can listen tot he album through my ipod, as well as Windows Media Player.
When I try clicking on any of the songs in Itunes the song just does nothing. I tunes can still see the file, it just doesn't respond to the double-click or the play button.
Anyway to fix this? I was also thinking that could this be an Apple response to acquiring some songs through other means other than the itunes store?

But all of a sudden I cannot get my libraray or any playlist ti play more than one song at a time automatically. It just stops after each song.
head into your itunes main library window. are all the little boxes to the left of your tracks unchecked?
is so, hold down Ctrl and click on one of those boxes to recheck all the songs. (this may take a little time.)
do you get continuous play once all the songs are rechecked?
