Illustrator CS6 gradient mesh

I've got two objects that I would like to apply a gradient mesh to. They're both compound paths and despite lots of mentions on the internet that you can't apply a gradient mesh to a compound path, you can. When I select one I get the option to create a gradient mesh. When I select the other I also get the option. However, no matter how I try to join the two objects (releasing compound paths, selecting everything, creating new compound path) when combined, they won't allow me to create a gradient mesh. What's weird is that even after I've done this each object still allows me to create a gradient mesh but when I select both of them together they won't. I've tried everything, pathfinder options, reversing paths etc. but nothing works. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Yeah, I tried Unite, Exclude and Divide to try and achieve what I was after however none of them worked.
Let's say it's this logo. It isn't but it will do for illustrative purposes as it is similar to the one I am working on. Let's say the logo itself is one of the objects and the 'TM' underneath is the other object. In my case the 'TM' is the brand name so it's a bit more important and much larger. I can select the logo and apply a gradient mesh. I can select the brand name and apply a gradient mesh. However I can't select both and apply a gradient mesh. In the case of the starbucks logo, how would I knock out the crown i.e. make it white out of the green, without using a compound path? Using pathfinder commands result in a compound path.

  • Illustrator cs6 gradient mesh issue

Trying to work with gradient mesh colouring the nodes and every few nodes I colour the selection stops working and i cant select the mesh. Doesn't matter if which selection tool I use or even the gradient mesh tool its still the same issue. I can see the mesh lines and when i click with any tool on the mesh lines will show up in black but i cant select it to see the nodes. The only way that i've found around this is to save the work, close the file and reopen it. It's starting to be a pain as im having to do this every couple minutes.
I've done all CS6 updates and still getting the same issues so now im stumped.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

  • Get Rid of Illustrator CS6 Gradient Banding

    Hello:
I am very new to Illustrator and I'm having a problem.  I have a gradient on a business card I'm making but it's banding.
I've uploaded the gradient background illustrator file here: http://f.cl.ly/items/2L0C0S3v1Y1U2U3D2F3r/GradientBanding.ai
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks,
    Garrett

    a) AI calls its workspace "Preview" for a reason
    b) Monitor limitations myay contribute further (limited gamut on LCDs)
    c) There will be banding once it goes to print
In conclusion: You can't fix it unless you change your design. Large, uniform gradients are always problematic.

  • Problems printing placed gradient mesh graphics

CS3 Illustrator and InDesign. Whenever a drawing is created in Illustrator using gradient mesh, and placed into an InDesign document, our printer (Ricoh Aficio 2232C with postscript) all the gradient mesh areas print from InDesign as solid black. I have tried changing every print setting I can think of, but it always comes out the same.
There are workarounds of course (like saving the illustration as a tiff) but I'd like to work with the original file if possible. Any ideas in how I can proceed in fixing this?

I wouldn't worry too much about trying to keep the original file intact. ... Of course you should, but there is nothing wrong with making a version "specially for print". It takes some discipline in that you have to edit the original file and always remember to save a flattened copy to update in your document.
You have to consider there are printers out there (the guys with the weathered faces and hot lead-resistant calluses, not the buzzing, ink-eating and paper spitting type -- okay, maybe they do that as well) with older RIP software or hardware that may have similar problems with very (very) complicated graphics. It's better to play safe than to re-make your image until it can just be processed by your own local printer.

Is there a way to acheive the same or similar results by creating gradient meshes in Flash the same way that Illustrator offers?
I created some images in Illustrator using gradient meshes and when i bring them into flash it automatically converts my vertor art to bitmaps.
just wondering if there was a way to stylize objects in flash using something similar to a gradient mesh,

  • Give comprehensive API to access gradient mesh elements!

Illustrator's gradient-mesh feature is a powerful and has created a completely different type of artwork.   We can see some of it by searching with Google search engine "gradient mesh image".   There we can see what some people have done with the gradient-mesh feature.    However, working manually with gradient-mesh can be very time-consuming and that has block this form of art.   It's very time-consuming and not economically efficient.
I suggest that you offer an extensive API to get access to key elements of gradient-mesh so users can create their own scripts to speed up whatever they are doing.

    Hi all,
verry good suggestions. The note The specified item was not found. solved my problem, nearls ;-).
    How it came to this?
It has been a propper installed and working PI 7.10 SPS 6.
After or during patching to SPS 7 anything went wrong in communication with the SLD. During investigation the user registering to the SLD was not allowed to do this any more and the entries inside SLD Administration for the two RFC connections were not available any more:
    1. SLD setting: NoneUnicodeGatewayRegistrationId for SLD_NUC was gone (deleted during patch)
    2. SLD setting: UnicodeGatewayRegistrationId for SLD_UC was gone (deleted during patch)
    3. SLD setting: StartRfcServer for true was gone (deleted during patch)
    4. User for SLD access was not alowed to access SLD
This Blog is quite good /people/venugopalarao.immadisetty/blog/2007/03/15/adapter-engine-cannot-be-found-in-integration-directory but did not fit 100% my problem as well.
The problem on my side was based on the fact that my system was upgraded from PI 7.00. It looked like that the users had not all permissions needed for a PI 7.10 system with SPS 7. I changed the permissions of the following users: PIRWBUSER, PIREPUSER, PIDIRUSER, PIAPPLUSER und PIAFUSER and added the following roles but I think that the main role is this one: SAP_BC_WEBSERVICE_PI_CFG_SRV
    SAP_BC_WEBSERVICE_PI_CFG_SRV
    SAP_SLD_ADMINISTRATOR
    SAP_SLD_CONFIGURATOR
    SAP_SLD_CONTENT_SYNC
    SAP_SLD_DATA_SUPPLIER
    SAP_SLD_DEVELOPER
    SAP_SLD_ORGANIZER
    SAP_SLD_SUPPORT
    SAP_XI_ID_SERV_USER
    SAP_XI_ID_SERV_USER_MAIN
Maybe I will check later which one was really the reason for my problems.

  • Illustrator CS6 to CS4: White lines along edges of semi-transparent gradient meshes

    Hi,
I recently invested in CS6 Production Premium and I've just tested legacy support by saving an Illustrator CS6 image in CS4 format.
The image contains a number of semi-transparent gradient meshes used for highlights.
Having loaded the saved CS4 .ai file in CS6, white lines appear along my semi-transparent gradient meshes (see the attached screenshot).
What's happening is that the anchor points with 0% opacity in CS6 suddenly have 100% opacity when I load the saved CS4 files in CS6.
    Is this a known error?
If so, how/where do I report it?
Here are the relevant CS6 and CS4 files:
    http://snk.to/f-chcig8s9
P.S. There are no white lines when I save the image in CS5 format and load it in CS6.

The image contains a number of semi-transparent gradient meshes used for highlights.
CS4 doesn't support semi-transparent gradient meshes. So they are simulated by using opacity masks. The masks are generated atuomatically from the meshes in the file, so they have the exact same size, which causes the fringes. If you would create this manually, you would make the opacity mask slightly larger in order to avoid fringes.

Because it was not possible to apply a gradient to a stroke in CS5. When you open the file in CS5, it is reduced to something that can be rendered in CS5.

  • Illustrator CS6: How to convert a mesh from (white- grayscale) to (white- alpha) ?

I just finished a bunch of graphics, using almost entirely gradient meshes at varying levels of transparency. I used "screen" for the transparency mode, and every mesh point is a grayscale color ranging from white (bright spots) to black. This combination achieved a "glowing effect;" the black and gray colors appear as transparency when my designs are shown against a colored shape.
However, when I removed the background colored shape, the black and gray gradient points, which originally appeared as varying levels of white transparency, now appear as grayscale pixels. I'm definitely a beginner to Illustrator, but it surprised me that the gradient/screen's black and gray colors appeared differently without a background.
Attached is a simple example: A gradient mesh shows up with transparency against a red background. But when the red background is removed, a black color appears. I would like to convert the varying levels of black/gray to varying levels of alpha, as they appear when shown against a red background
Is there some way to convert the red to alpha, or the grayscale pixels to varying levels of white / transparency, without needing to click every gradient mesh point?
Original effect on one background color. (this is the desired transparency effect, only I would like it to be the same without a static background color)
But when I slide the background color away, grayscale pixels replace the transparency. (I wanted to keep the transparency where grayscale pixels were in the gradient mesh screen)
Without a background color, any export to PNG will have black pixels, instead of transparent pixels. (I wanted transparent pixels here.)
I'm software designer, so the reason I want to remove the background while preserving the gradient transparency is so I will be able to dynamically insert different background colors at run time, and/or insert other images between the background color and the gradient. Yes, it's true I could generate every combination of colors, but in my case that would mean exporting 36 images from Adobe Illustrator, as opposed to exporting just 6 images. Packaging 36 images would also increase the space required by my compiled application.
Is there some way to keep the desired transparency effect, while exporting for use against any background color?

This is the best solution. It worked, and all my "glowing effects" are now working correctly with transparency.
However, this requires copying the background shape over and over again, as well as clicking on every mesh in the layers window. My project has something like 100 mesh objects. I really wish there was some faster way to do this, especially since the "screen" transparency option implies it is a software setting. (It is much faster than clicking every gradient point, though.)
    Thank you for your help.

  • Thoughts on automation for gradient mesh illustrations....

So I've been looking around at various tutorials on creating gradient mesh illustrations. The general theme that keeps popping up is how time consuming it is to colourize the mesh, point by point. Some clever programmer out there could surely find some way of automating this process no?
The way I see this potentially working would be to initiate a filter of some kind that would take a selected object, in this case a gradient mesh, collect all of the x/y coordinates of all of the points into an array. Then, using that array of points, one by one, determining what the visible CMYK values are of the pixel that is below and then setting that point to said colour. Sure, the user would likely have to go back and adjust some points manually here and there where a point is on the edge of a fold between a light and dark area - but I have to think that the bulk of the points would be visually correct on the first pass.
This can't possibly be an insurmountable task? Clearly well beyond my skills but if such a thing could be created it would drastically speed up the illustration process associated with this tool.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
    Jeff

...and aside from what Monika said, consider the limitations of transparency handling in web image formats as well as what impact the differences in handling of transparancies between browsers may have on the web site design.

  • Illustrator CS6 crashes ,on my mac, when I use the gradient tool. Any help out there?

My illustrator cs6 crashes when I use the gradient tool. I'm using a mac with mac os 10.9.3.
This driving me mad... any help out there?

    mr.roo,
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

I've spent about 12 hours trying to get this stupid thing to look right.. What i had to do is make each "gradient section" a different "shape", and make it exactly the right angle to contour with the flag. (IF anyone knows an easier way to do this, let me knowww)
Anyway, the part I cant figure out is... I can do up and down gradients fine (even though it takes forever)
What I cant figure out how to do is the gradients that dont go up and down all the way.
I could do this in about 3 seconds in photoshop, but I'm just about ready to give up in illustrator....
This is what I wanna do in illustrator...

Thanks for any help or advice <3

What i had to do is make each "gradient section" a different "shape", and make it exactly the right angle to contour with the flag...
Traditionally, that's part of  what you do to render realistic shading in vector drawing programs. Before features like transparency effects and gradient meshes, such drawings are basically a combination of the gradient fill types provided by the program (in Illustrator, limited to the most basic two: linear and radial) and object blends. In an illustration like your sample, with compound curvature surfaces, a key to that is understanding that you can create blends between grad fills.
So that drawing could be done using nothing more than those techniques: grad fills and blends. It would not be unusual for it to take 10 hours for a beginner not yet familiar with the tools to accomplish. An intermediate level user could do it in an hour or two.
Transparency effects and gradient meshes provide more options.
The trade-off with use of transparency effects is that you have to be aware of and vigilant about the fact that such effects often have to be rasterized as soon as they leave the drawing program, which--depending on the intended usage--can obviate the whole purpose of doing it in a vector program to begin with.
The trade-off with gradient meshes is that the interface for using them is quite unintuitive and particularly frustrating to beginners.
Beyond that general advice, you'd be asking for specifics on how to draw that partricular image of that particular flag; you'd essentially be asking for someone in a user forum to draw it for you as a custom step-by-step "tutorial".

  • Illustrator CS6 Saving to PDF Gradient Problems HELP!!!

Im trying to export an illustrator CS6 document to PDF but whenever i export it the gradients within the document turn nearly sold. On the screen it looks fine. have changed the transparency in the document set up to high res but still, nothing changes. Does anyone have any idea?

Keep in mind i did not have the links, so it is without the links.
Problem was buildup of your file.
Black in your backround was in 4 sepparations and the circular gradient is black only. I adjusted background to black only.

  • Gradient mesh -- CS6

I am working on a tutorial using the gradient mesh tool.  In the tutorial I draw a rectangle, and with the gradient mesh tool select one point of the rectangle to turn it into a gradient mesh.  The problem is that in the tutorial the mesh stays colorless, but in mine it automatically fills with white, and I can't make it transparent again.
I hope there is just a setting that I need to check or uncheck
