Illustrator cs6 halftone question

1. I create a gradient filled circle
2. Apply color halftone effect
3. Expand
4. Image trace with 'Ignore white' option turned on
5. Expand to make it vector
6. But when I try to change color of the halftone, this happens
What am I doing wrong?

The quality of Tracing of the the same circle I've seen in tutorials is way better than this. It captures every dot and has no problems with changing of a fill. The difference in results is tangible that's why I think I'm missing something.

Illustrator CS6 Halftone Dots are Printing as Gradient

I am printing to my Epson 4880 for screen printing film.
I have recently upgraded to CS6 on Windows 7.
I can choose the seperations option in the print window and edit the dot frequency and angle options.
When the film is printed, the graphics are printed as grayscale NOT dot pattern.
This will not work when exposing screens.
There is nothing new that I am doing so I must have some settings overlooked.
What am I doing wrong?

I can guarantee the reason why it's not printing halftones from Illustrator is because you do not have a PPD in place. You do a have a postscript printer, but that doesn't mean the postscript driver is installed and since you just reinstalled everything I can only assume that is what happening. I'm assuming you have windows 7 64 bit? download and install the driver here then do a test print. Definitely do not make halftones in photoshop. They are not true halftones and will look funky once you print. You want your rip or Illustrator/indesign to do this.
I can offer you two options to fix this so you won't have to apply frequency and angle each time in Illustrator. You can re set up wasatch to print halftones like before. This will require some reading and testing http://www.scribd.com/doc/38569787/WASATCH-QUICKSTART-SP. I haven't messed with wastach in about 5 years though as it's far too expensive for simple film screen print separations, but I recall you have to mess with ink droplet size/print head alignment and all of that stuff not just setting the frequency and angle.
Option two you buy accurip that is built specifically for what you do and your epson 4880 and costs around $500, never has to be paid to be upgraded and has full technical support. You basically install your print driver and install accurip. It automatically finds your printer and installs an accurip to epson 4880 driver. You can then go into settings to select any frequency/angle/droplet size, weight, etc that will override any other program like Illustrator. Once set it you can forget about it. I'm not a salesperson for accurip. I just work with a lot of screen printers and I can swear by that software. It is the best for what it does. I'd also recommend switching to refillable cartridges and use onyx black. The standard epson black is for cmyk prints and isn't as dark as you'd like for burning screens. It's also far cheaper.
If none of these options work for you and you cant figure it out take a screen shot of the printer preview window and I'll look it over to see if any of the settings are messed up. I'll need to see the general tab and the output tab.

Color management in Illustrator CS6 and InDesign CS 6-settings & workflow questions.

I've read the color management posts and the Adobe help file regarding the Pantone + libraries and the new differences between CS5 & 6. However I'm still a bit confused as to just what my settings should be, and a few posts offer different pieces of advice, so I'm looking for clarification. I don't need to work with legacy CS files, so I don't want to swap out the old Pantone libraries for the Plus ones. However I still have my old Pantone Solid, Coated and Uncoated swatchbooks and until I can afford the new Plus swatchbooks, I'll depend on those. I'm hoping the difference between Pantone 321U and Pantone+ 321 is not great.
If I'm preparing a file for print and to be placed into an InDesign CS6 document for print, I know both document color modes should be CMYK—got that. In Illustrator CS6, I'm assuming I would use a Pantone+ Uncoated swatch (remember I'm using the old Pantone Uncoated swatch book as a visual guide and praying that the difference isn't too noticeable.)
1. In the Swatch settings pallette, should I set the Spot Color option to use the first choice—use LAB values specified by the book manufacturer, or use CMYK values from the manufacturer process books.
2. In the View menu, should I select Overprint Preview to get a (more or less-I know the drill) closer monitor color to what will be printed.
I don't want to fool around with trying to set the CMYK values as listed in Pantone Color Bridge CMYK EC (found on Scribed here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/33104/Pantoner-Color-BridgeTm-Cmyk-Ec ), and I'm not even sure of the point in doing so or what it would do for me.
What I want is to depend on a swatch book, select the named swatch from the Pantone library, have all my settings set properly, then place it in InDesign, then send the file to a digital printer and get as close an approximation to the swatch book selection as possible. I need monitor color settings to reflect the swatches as best possible.
When I can afford it, should I opt for the Pantone+ Coated and Uncoated swatchbooks, or the Color Bridge? I'm usure of the difference, and if there are any Illustrator or InDesign settings that would need to be changed depending.
As a corollary to this questions, once the settings are OK in Illustrator, what do they need to be in InDesign? There are settings for Ink Manager (all spots to process or use standard LAB values for spots, the Color palette has check options for LAB, CMYK, RGB.
I'm not sure what needs to be set in InDesign to make sure colors are consistent between what is set in Illustrator and then what InDesign does.

Let me try to help you further:
1. In Illustrator's Swatch settings pallette, should the Spot Color Mode option be set to use:
a. CMYK
b. LAB
c. Book Color (not sure if this refers to the pantone swatchbook)
- I would use "c" - Book Color. This is the file going to the printer which will use Spot Color on press. For a copy of the file to be output by your Canon, use "a" - CMYK.
2. In the View menu should Overprint Preview be checked, and why, and would it differ based on the settings for #1.
- Only if the color was transparent ( which it isn't ) would overprint preview be of any use or you use a tint value of the Spot color and a black, but even then you may not be able to detect any change in the screen view. I typically do not use any overprint preview and I do not rely on the monitor for any color deisions. You could be different and that is OK. Let me know if you are able to detect any deviates using overprint preview.
I'm sorry for being a little short. There is a lot of confusion about these issues and Adobe and Pantone are not making things any easier.
The key is your Canon will not be able to print accurate Spot color without a RIP for the necessary color tables and conversions for that particular printer. In your case, it will be necessary to build a CMYK file to print a somewhat approximate representation of that specific Spot color. Another frustrating part of this matrix is CMYK cannot match all Pantone Spot Colors.

Illustrator CS6 beta GRID question.

Can someone who is beta-testing Illustrator CS6.. Does it yet allow you to change the grid to Thousandths?
I use Illustrator with CADtools plugin for architectural drafting. I need to adopt a drawing to 1/8 (.125) or 3/8 (.375) scale. As it is, CS5 can only change it to .12-.13, or .37-.38 respectively. This throws off the scale of the floor plan.

PS, I did put in a request when both CS4 and CS5 were out, so hopefully this was looked into. With the increased power and features of Illustrator, allowing draftsman to use it as a CAD program would be very beneficial.

People might actually start complaining if they get to see the 14+ accurate decimals *everywhere*' as that is what Illustrator does its internal calculations with.
Actually, Illustrator's internal calculations are far worse than that, and it's a reason Illustrator doesn't show a lot of digits.
The main problem is that all coordinates in Illustrator are represented internally in the rather awkward units of 1/2048 of a point. While convenient from a binary standpoint (11 bits for the fraction), this value -- suppose we call it a 'zip' -- means that many values, both in points and in other units like mm, cannot be represented precisely.
Since there are 2048 zips in a point, and 72 points in an inch, there are 2048*72 = 147456 zips/inch. Values like 0.25in (36864 zips), 0.125in (18432 zips),and 0.0625in (9216 zips) can all be exactly represented. But something like 0.1in cannot, since it would be 14745.6 zips and the number of zips must be integral. The closest we can come is 14746 zips, or 0.10000271267in.
Millimeters are even worse, since even 1mm cannot be exactly represented in zips (1mm would be 5805.35433071 zips; we must be content with 5805 zips, or 0.999938965mm). 0.125mm (725.66929 zips) gets changed to 0.125056966mm (726 zips).
Generally the values in Illustrator are shown in the user interface rounded to three digits, so you don't notice the slight inaccuracies. They're still there, though. For example, draw a 0.125mm square and scale it to 10000% -- the resulting square will be 12.506mm, not 12.5mm.

Illustrator CS6 click dragging artboard question

Illustrator CS6- When click holding the mouse while holding down the spacebar to move the artboard, it no longer shows the artboard and artwork moving as it did in CS5 & earlier. When I release the mouse the artwork just jumps to where the hand is. Is this a setting that I don't have set correctly? It's not a big deal but it is nice to see where things are moving in relation to the monitor.
Any help is appreciated.

I have been struggeling with this for over 1 month now. This is what I have done, and so far it has worked perfectly for me. (fingers crossed)
I changed my units to pixels under <<Preferences
When I create a new artboard, I use Pixels for the units.
I change the preview mode to <<Pixel instead of <<default
and I check the box that says <<Align New Objects to Pixel Grid
I've been able to create new artboards within an existing document as well with great success.

How can I get Illustrator CS6 to update? I get Installation error code U44M1P7

I have a windows 8.1 machine. When I installed Design Standard CS6, I got error messages for Illustrator CS6, Photoshop CS6 regular and Photoshop CS6 64-bit.
I checked for Adobe updates, and after installing all of these, I still get an error for Illustrator.
It tells me "Adobe Illustrator CS6 Update (version 16.0.3) Installation failed. Error Code: U44M1P7
From some of the other message boards, I have seen the thing to do is re-try the update.
I have done this three times, but Illustrator still has the same problem.
What can e done to troubleshoot? I am directed to contact customer care for this issue.

Error when installing Adobe Illustrator CS6 (64bit)

Hello everybody,
I've been trying to install all packages inside Creative Suite 6 Design Standard CD but the installation fails, then decided to install one by one and noticed the error comes only when installing Illustrator CS6 (64bit).
My PC is runing windows 7 64bit and the error it appears says: win32 cabinet self-extractor stopped working.
Could anybody give me a hand with this issue, I already look on the web but couldn't find something that really helps me.

Surface Pro 3 with Illustrator CS6/CS3

Hi there,
before I want to buy the Surface pro 3 I have a few questions. The main reason I want to use it for is to work with Adobe Illustrator.
1) I've installed CS6 student edition on my desktop pc at the moment. Is it possible to use CS6 student also at the Surface by using the same license as on the pc.
2) Can I use the pressure sensative of the brushes in Illustrator CS6 with the Surface 3 pen?
3) If it's not possible to use CS6 on both devices, I have also the older Illustrator CS3 student edition. Has anyone tried to use this pressure option in the Illustrator CS3 on the Surface pro 3?
4) Could you generally advise to use Illustrator on the Surface pro 3. I've read that the GUI symbols are very small. Has anyone experiences?

You shouldn't have much problems with the surface. The only thing I can think of is the issue of the higher resolution. Since illustrator is an older version is is lacking the features for higher resolution monitors. You may need to lower the resolution to make it easier to see and use. Other than that you should be fine.

Firstly great tutorial.
Anyway I initially started a thread in the forums which lead me here regarding the use of opacity masks, I'm having real problems finding a solution to my specific problem.
I've got 2 issues I'm trying to solve, the first is how do I show just a portion an object above another even though it sits in a layer behind.
The second is I have an object with a linear gradient applied and I want to add yet another gradient just to a certain part of that object in order to make it fade out in a certain way.
I've spent hours pouring through the help topics but nothing seems to fit my exact problem, sorry for asking questions here but I'm really stumped and I think an opacity mask would do the trick, I'm just not sure how to execute it.

You can install it on two computers simultaneously, so uninstalling is not needed if it's the only other installation.

Illustrator CS6 "not responding"

Illustrator CS6 (MAC OSx) constantly freezes for no particular reason, and states "not responding", leaving the only option to "force quit" and restart. I have tried resetting the preferences and various other options, with no success. Is there a way to fix this?

I am using a Mac Mini, with MAC OSx, and a Phillips screen. There does not seem to be a pattern that I can decipher that helps me figure out why Illustrator CS6 does this.
Here are a list of some of the times it does this, and a few things I have tried.
When opening Illustrator, I then create a new document. If I choose the default setting (Print / A4 etc) then it opens a new document without a problem. If I however change the settings to web, it freezes. If once I have a blank print cmyk document open, I then try to open a previously saved illustrator file (.ai) of any variety - big or small, old or new, print or web etc, it freezes. When I say it freezes I mean that it won't do anything, and on clicking on the icon, it says Illustrator not responding. This does not change over time. I have waited hours to see if anything changes. It does not. I have to "force quit" and restart it.
Other times, I have tried to directly open a previous illustrator file / document from finder, with illustrator closed, and it does the same "not responding" after it opens illustrator
I have tried opening illustrator, and then opening a previous document from the file > open command. It also freezes at this point.
But then there are times when illustrator opens, and opens files (big or small, print or web, old or new) without a problem, and I haven't seemingly done anything different.
Other times that is freezes are when moving the swatches panel from one side of the screen to the other, with a document open (any type of .ai)
I usually work in .ai files, but have had the same problem with .eps and png's etc too.
It has also frozen when embedding a png image into a .ai doc.
In general my documents are not large, they average anywhere between 200kb to 2.5 MB usually.
I have tried switching off my computer and rebooting it, still no luck
I have tried closing all programs, and only opened Illustrator, still no luck
I have done software updates with no change.
I have tried resetting preferences by holding down the shift, cntrl, apple, alt keys on opening. This has helped once or twice, but I have had no luck with it for the past few months.
Does any of this information help?
My next option is to delete and reinstall illustrator, but I am a bit nervous to do that in case I have other complications with installing it for a second time.
Happy to answer other questions, just not sure what other info would be helpful.
