Imac died, running out of fix ideas

I have an iMac G5 with 1.8Ghz, and it is my workhorse. It died and I am not sure what to do to fix it. I've tested the RAM, it's fine. I can't start it from the disk, it doesn't get far enough in the start up. What it does is once it gets to the spinning screen, strange pink and blue lines appear in erratic patterns on the screen. It goes no further. However, I am able to start it in Target mode and get my files off it. This happened all the sudden, I was having no problems before. What to do?

With a 1.8 GHz iMac G5, you're likely looking at an issue involving defective capacitors on your logic board.
Write to the address in my Personal Profile and I will reply with a description of how to diagnose this issue, and determine if your logic board is affected.

  • Early 2008 iMac mysteriously running out of storage

    Running out of storage.  I have a Early 2008 iMac desktop with 2GB of memory, L2 Cache of 6 MB.  Using OS X 10.8.5   I have only 4.11 GB free of 319.21 GB.  Referencing the More about this Apple storage tab, it says my largest user of memory is "other" which uses uses 279 GB. By contrast my photos uses 1.58GB, Audio 4.13 GB. Movies 10.7 GB, Apps 7.95 GB, Backup 0.  It seems obvious that OTHER is eating up all of the space.  I cannot figure out what this catagory is.  I assume it is the OS X system, but that cannot be that big. Does anyone have advice.
    I also have a Seagate Backup Plus drive of 2 TB where I back up my iMac.  It has 1.59TB free of its 2 TB capacity
    Also would adding another 2 GB in memory be advised.  Thanks for your help from a Senior Citizen with limited understanding of how my computer works internally.

    This was very helpful SO FAR.  At first I only found lots of little things to delete but it made little difference in the total memory gained.  The I realized I was only scanning my files.  I rescanned with it looking at only my hard drive and I got the result with 80% of the visual filled with big and small units lmost all appear to be Backup/Home Folder?    /INcremental.  The files date from 1/1/2012 until 11/11/2013.  Everything should be backing up to my SeaGate external drive.  Should I now delete or trash these older files and how do I do that?

  • Problems Running out of IDE (Netbeans) LDAP SSL

    I am kind of new to Java and I have a problem with a code that is using a TrustStore. Basically if I run the code within Netbeans everything work but if I do the "Clean and Build" and execute the JAR file when I check my logger out when running out of the IDE I am getting the following exception.

                catch (Exception e) {
                    logger.info("Bind error: " + e);
                    System.exit(-1);
    And from what I have found the Bind error could be caused because the code is not able to use the Certificate, here is how I call the truststore
         String keystore = "C:\\Program Files\\Java\\jre7\\lib\\security\\securitycacerts";
         System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStore",keystore);
         System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStorePassword", "12345!");
         System.setProperty("javax.net.debug", "all");
    I know that my LDAP is works with the SSL because I can connect using the LDP.exe and in fact if I run my application using netbeans everything works.
    Does anybody know how to get around this?

    Maverick and Your System message
    I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps (Pages, Aperture, iPhoto, Numbers & iMovie, too) in the process.
    On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory message. But it's not Calendar, it's Mail that not only won't open, but when it does now, it takes the entire system out with it.
    I open Safari, and it works. I open Firefox, and it works and Safari still works. I open Calendar and it works, Safari and Firefox continue to work. I open Reminders, and everything still works.
    I open Aperture, and it opens Finder instead, showing the 3.5 update that was installed two days ago (and Aperture has functioned), but doesn't seem to update the app; after about 20 seconds the update disappears and I can now open Aperture and it shows I'm now opening the updated Aperture, which it didn't show before.
    I click on Mail, and the cursor spins for ten minutes. The mail window finally opens, but the cursor spins and does not connect to upload new mail, and I finally Force Quit Mail. Since the Maverick update, even though Mail was not updated (and maybe because Mail was not updated), I have been able to receive emails twice, and then the program crashed.
    Besides the Aperture app, Pages didn't fully update on the iMac, and I had to remove the old Pages icon from the dock after the new program loaded up from Applications.
    Any ideas?

    Nothing works at all. When I spilled the coffee I shut it down, unplugged everything, turned it over and put paper towels beneath it to drain. Made the mistake of turning it back on after a couple of hours. It worked but emitted strange noises from the internal speakers. Turned it back off, but have not been able to turn it back on since. I disassembled the entire macbook yesterday, found coffee stains on the keyboard components. Tried to turn it on and get nothing. The only sign of life is the battery indicator. When I press the button the series of green lights come on, but that's it. Thanks for your responses. Jaylloyd

    Welcome to the Communities.
    We want to help you but unfortunately you have given us insufficient information.
    Please find a moment to tell us more about your machine, the model identifier, the OS version, and the total amount of RAM you have.   It also helps to know where you are, nothing specific, just the country.   Macs do not run on iOS 6.1.6 as your profile says.
    Then fill those same details in your profile for future use

  • How do I fix message "computer has run out of application memory" even tho all apps are closed

    Since loading Mavericks my iMac 27-inch (2009) 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 stays almost out of virtual memory and often pauses all apps and messages "computer has run out of application memory." I have run spindump, but no significant difference is made.

    Spindump is a diagnostic tool used by Apple. It doesn't fix anything.
    There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
    A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
    Not enough memory for your usage pattern
    Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
    When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if it's not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
    View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
    If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
    The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
    Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
    The System Memory tab of the Activity Monitor window shows how physical memory is being used. "Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
    If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
    The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
    sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
    where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

    If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

    Edge has very clear restrictions, one being that you must have 6 months of clean payment history which you don't. Either wait until April 14, or good luck at Sprint.
    I am unsure how it can be determined the payment mix up was the fault of CS, but regardless, the mix up was done. There can be any number of reasons why a payment could be missed without any fault on your part, however you are still the responsible party for the account and must live with the repercussions.
