IMac G5 Leopard Install (New Question, Old Problem)

I've been through a number of the boards over the last two weeks, but I have yet to solve my install problem. I bought the Leopard family pack and promptly installed on my intel mac mini (no problems). However, I have not been able to install on my iMac G5. After I insert the Leopard disk, go through the various prompts and restart the Mac, all I get is a grey screen the spinning pizza. I never get the option to "archive and install". I have gone through the terminal and removed some of the application enhancer programs (as noted in earlier posts). However, the result is still the same. Am I doomed to backing up my disk, wiping it clean, and installing Leopard at that point? Beforehand, thanks for any advice and help.

When I insert the Leopard DVD, it does boot and the "install leopard" icon appears on the screen. After clicking on the icon and inputing my password, my Mac restarts. At that point, I can hear the DVD turning in the drive but the only thing that comes up is the grey screen and the turning circle.

Make sure you have fully exited Firefox last by using the Quit option. In Mac OS X, applications do not automatically exit when you close the last remaining window as they do in other operating systems.
If you are quite sure that you quit, it's possible that Firefox may have hung in the course of shutting itself down. In that case, you can read these instructions for 'force quitting' an applicaton:
    http://www.techiecorner.com/769/how-to-force-quit-program-in-mac-os-x/
Only do that as a last resort though.
Finally, uninstall your existing version of Firefox before attempting to install a new version. You can do that by opening the Applications folder from the Finder, then dragging the Firefox icon to the trash can.

    Sorry my english!

Yes, I agree with you. If you thought I was not agreeing with you that shows you how bad my written english can be.
Ok actually having the prototypes as visuals are very helpful you should file a feature request.
    Here:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
And with your permission I will try to send your mock ups to someone who might possibly be able to do something with it. And there are one or two contributors to the forum who hopefully will see this and they might have some influence as well. But I agree there should be a rethinking about access to the panels and they should be accessible in at least some degree by way of the keyboard.
As far as the comments about your english n need to thank, it was all my pleasure.
I will try and you should as well you cannot attach your visual to the feature request but you can mention in the request that you have created such a visual. Adobe might actually be interested in seeing them.
But they are good solid suggestions.
The changing of the fonts in the way you suggest might actually work on the windows platform and if you have the text highlighted you the change is reflected on the canvas as you scroll. Long sort after request. There are however some Mac users who are opposed to this feature? It is not really clear why they are opposed.

  • WRT54GS New Firmware Old Problems

Hi , I have a WRT54GS v.5 and updated the firmware from its original v1.52.0 to the latest v1.52.2 last week. Since then, the router hangs after 2 days in mixed mode. I first thought it was skype, with all the recent problems, but it wasn't. Eventually, its all access. A search on this problem suggests this is an old problem, resolved a year ago in prior firmware releases. Now I'm wondering if somehow this fix was forgotten in v1.52.2. The kids PSP's dont work set to G, so I have to go back and forth. Before I roll back this firmware upgrade, is anyone else experiencing this problem since installing v1.52.2? Scott

Help...I had this resolved for months....I cant get by a day without my GS going offline. I don't want to buy another $35 Netgear that has so far, run for 6 months....This is frustrating. This router is back to doing the same thing it did when I first bought it...For a while, setting to Wireless G had this resolved...Now its a show stopper, because I switched to Skype for my home phone... I put the router back to factory settings, and rebuilt from scratch with latest firmware. Every 5-6 hours, off the internet it goes. Wireless and LAN ports. My Comcast provided WEBSTAR modem detects a link, and the access lights are going crazy, but can't make anything out of them. I'm wondering if.... Has anyone seen an ISP disable devices running p2p apps? In this case, Comcast wold detect Skype, direct competition to digital voice, and kick my network off. Just guessing here. Please help me...

  • Purchasing new HP Photosmart printer which will require new OS X Mountain Lion driver software.  Which steps do I take to install new printer, old printer HP still on iMac.

Purchasing new HP Photosmart printer which will require new OS X Mountain Lion driver, which installation steps do I take.  Old printer still on iMac.

    Hi Carol 22,
Thanks for the post.  Depending upon the printer model, print drivers may be available from ASU.  If not, then go to hp.com and download Mt. Lion drivers to your iMac.  After you complete the hardware setup of the printer, if connecting wireless, then connect the printer to your network and then complete the installation and add the printer.  Then you can go back and remove your old printer.  I hope this helps...Good Luck!
I work for HP but my posts and replies are my own....Thank you!

  • Disk Utility doesn't recognize HD.  Installed new one, same problem.

    Hello,
I have a MBP. It suddenly wouldn't boot up, and had the flashing question mark folder upon starting up, so I figured that the HD needed to be replaced. I ordered a brand new drive, and when I try to install Leopard, it doesn't see the new hard drive. I open Disk Utility to partition the drive to GUID, but Disk Utility doesn't even see the new drive. Just my optical drive is listed.
I hooked up the old hard drive externally to another mac, and it appears to be working just fine. So it isn't a bad drive as I had originally thought.
What else could be wrong? The laptop fails to see any internal hard drives. Is there anything else that I can do to fix this problem? Thanks.

Purely conjecture, your serial ATA controller may be bad (or the cable). I assume nothing shows in System Profiler/Hardware/Serial-ATA either. Maybe try the SMC reset?
-If the computer is on, turn it off.
-Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
-Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
-Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
-Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • Imac late 2006 install tiger 10.4 problem.

Hi, would appreacite if someone can help me here.
One day the mac would not restart, booted from disk and disk utility would not let me repair disk, invalid node structure. Erase disk and had repaired ok.
However, everytime time I reload the OS and upgrade to 10.4.11 the install locks up and will not finish restart again and get the the same invalid node structure message. did this several times. The clean install takes list 6-8 hours is this correct?
My son need the mac for school so I got him a new one. So I have this useless mac which I would like to fix and use myself. Will install 3 gb memomry and new harddrive. Did show research here and it should not be a problem.
However, after reading alot of issues with the late 2006 Imacs. I am totally confused of what is the problem. My son had issues with the mac freezing all the time before, till one day it totally would not load the OS. I did a hardware check and it reports no problems.
    Is it the motherboard?
    is it the vidio card?
    memory?
    or the hard drive?
I would be nice to get this to work.
    thanks

My guess would be a failing HD. If you are going to replace it any ways I would start there. A clean install should not take 6-8 hours, it is having trouble writing to the drive. Bob :~))

  • IMac G5, Leopard - dual video question

I want to add an external monitor to my G5, bought the cable but the external monitor "mirrors" the display and the OS reduces the visible screen on the iMac significantly. In Leopard, does anyone know if there are changes that would allow me to extend the display in this manner rather than simply mirror it? Please help... two trips to the Apple store is great but wearing me out.
    THANKS!

Thank you! This absolutely took care of my problem. I have to clarify my earlier comments though, the iMac currently is running Tiger and my assumption was that since Tiger didn't have that capability, perhaps Leopard would have unleashed its feature in 10.5 so that was what I was looking for.
Now that I've loaded the SSD utility on the iMac running Tiger, my hope was to upgrade it to Leopard in the coming weeks but don't know what sort of impact it would have.
    Any ideas?

  • Fresh snow leopard install and still same problem. Please help :(

    hello.
    After 10.6.3 update....
I had issues with trackpad and keyboard freezing on my early 2008 macbook pro.
I have tried to reset pram, nvram, smc, onyx maintance everything i could think of.
So i decided to wipe hard drive clean and do fresh install. Everything was working fine until i applied 10.6.3 update.
Is there any fix for this yet ?
It still doesnt work good even with fresh install of snow leopard and 10.6.3 update.
    Thank you

I've read a lot on the Internet about alien UFO crashes too, but that doesn't mean it is a good idea to take them at face value.
If something doesnt work after clean install then thats updates issue.
Not necessarily, at least if you mean the OS update itself. Do a little research. This same argument pops up after every OS update. There are no exceptions -- every one of them has been blamed for all manner of post-update problem, linked to each of several different models, & everything else you have read on the Internet about this one. Users also frequently use the "clean install" argument in support of these theories that the update, whichever one it happens to be, is the only possible culprit.
The problem is these theories rarely prove to have any merit at all, & like with most such things, even when there is some merit to them, the complete explanation is more complicated. For instance, some users do a perfectly executed clean install & then ruin it by reintroducing the same bit of software that was the real problem in the first place. Some users don't know what a clean install is & mistakenly say they did one. Some eventually find & eliminate a different cause for their particular problems but never report that. Sometimes coincidence is involved -- with millions of users upgrading the chances that in some cases it is not are slim to none.
Basically, it is like anything else on the Internet. You can find something to support anything imaginable because people can imagine anything & too many of them ignore anything that doesn't support that or just don't make the effort to look for it in the first place.

  • New topic, old problem: Airport Express dropping out

I'm aware of the many threads on Airport Express issues on here but since no solution has emerged I feel I must rake over it again in the hope that someone at Apple will pick up the ball and create a fix for AEX BDS or Bizarre Dropout Syndrome as I call it.
Playing my iTunes music, via my 2T Time Machine>MacBook>AEX (extending my network to the basement) used to work seamlessly until...approximately... I upgraded to Leopard>Snow Leopard although if I'm honest I can't swear to this coincidence. Anyhow the symptoms are the similar as other ppl report elsewhere on this forum: ie Connecting prompts a microburst of a tune then randomly more bursts of varying length, never longer then 15secs, then after an hour or so it suddenly decides to play continuously for 4 or 5mins at a time but always dropping out again ad nauseam.
I called Apple tech support who could only offer it was interference from neighbour's WiFi networks at work, I checked but my neighbours are all on different channels to me. I have tediously checked, rechecked, rebooted, reconfigured, reinstalled iTunes and OS, moved the unit even tried a brand new 11n AEX but to no avail, always the same problem (so at least I can rule out a hardware issue with the AEX unit itself). I'm hoping there is a fix out there.......otherwise the AEX units are just very expensive paperweights.

I do not know if this answer will help much, but it is based on solid experience.
I tried using wi-fi and it kept dropping out.  I went through 3 routers!  A local salesperson told me enough with the new routers, it's your d*mn ISP.
Well, I started using speedtest.net to monitor my ISP's performance/signal strength.  I discovered that my signal FREQUENTLY dropped to very low levels.
My theory is that whenever the signal dropped, which was very, very often, I lost wi-fi connectivity.
I went to ethernet and never looked back, but with all these wireless devices, I'm wondering if I need to take a look at wifi again.  My ISP has cleaned up its act, so I might do better.
Unfortunately, I haven't tried it yet, so I can't announce the results.  But I thought it might possibly relate to your situation.

  • 24" iMac. Best value, new or old?

I'm getting ready to purchase a new 24" iMac. The difference in price between a new previous generation iMac and the new one is about $200 AFTER I upgrade the memory on the old one to 2 GBs. Is the new version really $200 better than the old?
We'll be using this new iMac for general stuff (i.e. DVDs, music, Microsoft Office, Internet, and some gaming, mainly Wow).
    Thanks!

    Hello kcrossley
The New iMac's are slightly faster than the previous white iMac's! If you prefer the matte finish display over the glossy at an even better price, check out the 24" white refurb. in the link below.

  • Photoshop CS4 - new report, old problems

    Hi there,
although i have posted many of the following problems in another thread, i will recall them here, because the other thread has gone slightly off-topic.
I have been "using" Photoshop CS4 that came as part of my Production Suite Premium Package for as long as it is out now and i have to say, that for me it is the worst release ever.
I work with Photoshop since Version 3 and every new release has had it's flaws that were fixed after a while. So i really hope this might also be the case with CS4.
So here are my System Specs again:
    Intel Dualcore E8600
    NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver: 180.48)
    MSI P35 Neo-2 Motherboard (Bios: 1.90)
    3 GB RAM
    Wacom Intuos 3 A4 (Driver: pro610-5)
    Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
The System is brandnew, the Windows-Installation is fresh, before the CS4 Suite there has not been another Adobe-Program on the machine.
While I am quiet happy with the other programs (Illustrator, Flash, After Effects..even Bridge is starting to become useful), Photoshop CS4 shows several glitches and problems on my system. These are:
    - If activated, the GPU-OpenGL setting deactivates randomly. There's no obvious reason for this, just in the middle of work, the rotate canvas-tool is no longer available, zooming is no longer smooth. While the box in the preferences is still checked for OpenGL and my graphics-card is recognized correctly, OpenGL features just stop working. After I close and restart Photoshop everything is normal again, until the next time settings are deactivated.
I am so far not able to trace the reason for this behavior, seems to happen quiet random.
    - No "marching ants". In the same matter, the "marching ants" of selections sometimes disappear. While this is not a big problem I think i should note it here for reasons of being accurate.
    - Brush tool stops working. I have this quiet a lot. While I paint, the Brush suddenly stops working completely. It produces neither strokes nor blotches anymore. In some cases hefty drawing can result in some strange straight lines but the brush tool can only be revived by restarting Photoshop.
    - Crashes. I truly honestly haven't had a crash with CS2 and CS3 ONCE. With CS4 crashes seem to be quiet normal at this point. The application simply freezes, mostly while using the transformation tool. Killing it via the windows task manager is the only option.
    - Slow redraw. All the above mentioned problems did occur with OpenGL enabled AND disabled. It really makes no difference. So deactivating this new thing doesn't convert Photoshop back into something useful, but into a slower version of CS3. Redraw of images is considerably slower on CS4 without OpenGL, than it was on CS3, although it gets better after some time working with it. Moving a maximized Image around feels very strange, because the build up of the tiles is somehow slow and sluggish.
    - Features I used are no longer there or no longer functional. I use Layer-Comps a lot. With activated OpenGL the Script "Layer Comps to Files" does not work. It produces an error-message that reads:
    Error 1: Unable to create Window - OS error (1400) Line: 234 -> dlgMain = new Window("dialog", strTitle);
With OpenGL deactivated it suddenly works... no idea why.
In addition some features like the automatic web gallery creation have been removed from Photoshop, but i figured out how to get them back.
While these are the really bad things about the new version (on my system that is, I heard from Mac-Users who are quiet happy with PS CS4 and keep telling me how fast it is on a Mac.....) there are other things, that i don't understand. I reckon, Photoshop cs4 is first of all a Mac-product and the PC-Version is somehow adapted or converted.
Proof of this for me is the new window behavior. Windows steeling focus and blocking sight on palettes is new for a long time PC-User like me. I also don't understand, why maximizing an image does fill the complete screen thus exterminatin

While I can not help remedy your problems, Pickman, I can tell you I have mostly the same problems as you. I am not the only one either. I hear this from my students. Marching ants disappearing is normal now, palettes hiding behind windows seems common nowadays. Photoshop losing focus, a document suddenly refusing to be the front one and having to minimize the other document(s) to have it back, lasso tool suddenly not showing it's tracing mark, it's all horrible. The error 'unable to create window' is very common.
I didn't even mention the fact that it's no longer possible to downsize the Photoshop window by it's top edge, which is utterly annoying when you have multiple windows open as I often have or the fact that when I scale the main Photoshop window, the documents stay in place and that the tooltips often don't work which is confusing for the novices that I train. I thought they had remedied that in CS3, but it's back in CS4. I have been using Photoshop since version 3 (briefly) then 4, 5 et cetera. This is one of the worst releases ever.

  • Installed Leopard - Installed Windows XP - Restart Problems

I decided to upgrade to Leopard last night and I'm beginning to think, for the first time ever for Apple, that this was a mistake.
I got the blue screen issue probably due to Application Enhancer, so I Archive and Install. Then decided after I couldn't burn DVD's that I just needed to wipe the drive entirely and reinstall everything.
Installed Leopard then Boot Camp with Windows XP Pro. Now when I try to restart from Windows, I just get a black screen = nothing. If I shut down first, everything is OK, but restart doesn't work in Windows. Note: this happened while installing Windows twice. Don't know what to check, but this worked just fine with 10.4.10.
Only difference is I formatted the XP partition to FAT32 instead of NTFS, could that be the issue?

Experiencing the same issue. I had OSX 10.4.whatever, and a FAT32 partitioned Win XP, which always worked nicely under the Boot Camp beta, back then.
I did a clean format and clean install, repartitioned the harddrive (FAT32 for the Windows part) and installed Win XP.
Attempting Restart from Windows results in a black screen, nothing happens, and I need to shut down the computer manually, by pressing the Power Button. This reacts instantly, by the way, no 10-second press-hold action...
    Anyone?
