Imac plays cds not dvds anymore HELP MY SANITY!!!

I have a imac 21.5 inch mid 2010 model 3.06ghz 12gb running 10.8.3 osx
I have had no massive issues with my lovely mac until now
Problem is system plays cds without issue however recently has started to eject dvds. I have looked all over the net and some places on here without finding a proper cure. This is driving me insane so i need help before i consider getting out the big hammer!!
First question why would it play cds and not dvds anymore having previously not been a problem and can i upgrade to anykind of software that will enable me also to upgrade it to play blu rays also. I have noticed software available that allegedly plays blu rays but has anyone had experiences with this good bad or indifferent?

Then, try an optical disc reader lens cleaner. If that doesn't fix it, then the optical drive DVD lens is broken. AFAIK, there are separate lenses for CDs and DVDs.

Boot from your Tiger System Install DVD. From the Utility Menu run the repair disk/permission option.
If the above cannot repair, then you will need to purchase a stronger 3rd party utility.

My quess is that the new software just doesn't allow the disk drive to work. I would love an explanation why this doesn't work and some help getting it to work. It's really frustrating because I get a bunch of CDs from work and never get to listen to them on my MacBook.

Make sure the discs are free of finger prints. The optical drive cannot read a disc with smudges and dust.
Check Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure: CDs, DVDs, and iPods, is selected.

This problem seems to have started around October 28, it appears to affect content purchased only on other devices but played on the Apple TV 1.
There have been other workarounds suggested from time to time, but I have found the simplest solution is to purchase something on the Apple TV 1 directly (There may be free content in some locations and this appears to work just as well).
Once the content has been purchased, it will not only play as normal, but will also allow all other content purchased on other devices after October 28 to play as well.
Some have reported that it's necessary to restart the Apple TV before and/or after purchase, but I found it worked without.

Superdrive reads cds, not dvds!

I've had my Macbook since January 2007, and I haven't had any issues with it until about a month ago. My superdrive simply stopped recognizing dvds. Each time one is inserted, it spins for a few seconds, then gets spit out. If I try opening DVD Player while it's in it say that it's not recognized. The thing is, is it'll still recognize and play cds! I've tried several different types of dvds, since at first I thought it was because I changed it back & forth between region 1 & 2, but the same thing happens no matter what.
I've been trying everything I could find online to resolve this, I've done software updates, repaired disk permissions, reset the smc and done the hardware test. Nothing seems to be making a difference!
I really don't want to buy a new drive if I don't have to, like I said, it still recognizes cds! So any help would be fantastic!

This is typically symptomatic of an optical drive that is beginning to fail. If you live in the USA, you can get an external USB DVD player for as little as $20.

Hi, please help with my issue which is as follows:
A file which was created and saved using Adobe Photoshop CS6 is not opening anymore and sends a message saying that the file is not compatible.
What should I do, I have invested so much in that file and I dont think i will be able to do it all over again.

That's why people do incremental saves and use backups... You could try to open the file in an image viewer like IrfanView and see which parts are salvagable, but that's as good as it gets most likely...

Burned dvd plays on computers, but not dvd players - help?

Hi,
I'm a noobie. I made a movie in final cut pro 5, then converted it to a quicktime movie, then saved it in idvd. The movie plays on all computers, but it's not recognized by dvd players connected to tv's. My questions are:
1. What's a quick way to burn onto a dvd that will be recognized by dvd players that aren't on computers?
2. What's the best way to save the best quality of my final cut movie to a dvd that I can play anywhere?

Welcome to discussions!
There is no sure-fired way to record to a DVD that every DVD player will recognize. Just too many of them out there.
Try burning a the lowest speed possible (1x to 4x )using a reliable disk like Verbatim DVD-R.

This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

ITunes can no longer play CDs, not sure why

Something very strange. For some reason iTunes no longer will play or import audio CDs. I have never had a problem before this playing or importing CDs - I just imported 3 CDs last weekend.
If I insert a CD, iTunes never even mounts it. If I open the CD by double clicking on the drive, and double click the tracks, iTunes opens but doesn't play the songs: it just doesn't do anything.
The CD drive is working fine. I changed the the default progams for .cda files first to real player then to windows media, and both played the songs on the CD without any problems at all. I then reassigned .cda files to iTunes, but it just won't play.
I have tried repairing both iTunes and Quicktime via add/remove programs, and rebooted many times, but still iTunes will not play the songs from the cd or even show it in the sidebar.
What is also strange is that even though iTunes doesn't show the CD as mounted in the side bar, I can still choose "Eject Disk" from the "Controls" menu and it ejects the CD, so it does appear that iTunes can interact with the CD drive, it just does not seem to read the audio files.
It does not matter what CD I try - even older CDs without copy protection. When I run iTunes diagnostics CD/DVD Drive Tests, I get Green lights for "Audio CD found", "Driver correctly installed", and "Audio CD read successfully", but I get a Red light next to "Unable to access audio CD".
I get the same result with the interal CD drive and my external usb2 CD/DVD burner.
I'm out of ideas and would appreciate any advice or help.

I've been an iTunes since the first version and use it on every computer I own. Love it. I am frustrated installing it on some computers at work. I am a music educator and I like to use iTunes to organize and play my library of audio at school.
I have tried using iTunes (ver. 5., 6, and 7) on several different Dell laptops and have consistently had trouble playing (and importing) CDs. When I insert the CD, the Gracenote (CDDB) window pops up and disappears very quickly (too quickly to read...) and the CD never appears in the left panel. When I Run Diagnostics I get the following:

So, the CD is read in the drive, but it still never shows in the left panel to play or import. Windows Media Player will do it, but hey, I don't want to use WMP! I want to use iTunes! I have tried updating the Intel chipset drivers as well, no dice.

Me too! I have just updated to version 7.0.2, and now iTunes won't recognize any Cd's I put in the drive to import. It hovers for a while at CDDB Gracenote and doesn't respond. Me thinks this is some sort of 7.0.2 gracenote issue. I've never had any issues with iTunes like this before. I am running bullguard version 6.1, microsoft defender, zone alarm, spyware doctor and spybot search and destroy and none of them have intered before. any suggestions?
I think this is disgraceful that iTunes can put out a new version of iTunes with so many inherent bugs. i count my self lucky that it hasn't deleted my library. i'm off now to get an external drive and back the lot up, because i don't have any faith in itunes anymore. i have 13,000 songs, so i'd be a little ticked off!

Searching 'On my Mac' not working anymore: help!

Hi there! Yesterday I received a warning that my startup disk was almost full, so some apps on my MacBook Air started crashing. Eventually I removed 20GB, solving that problem. However... ever since the search function for the archived messages in the "ON MY MAC" folder in Mail isn't working anymore. If I do a search for a specific word, it only shows all mails with that word that are still on IMAP, not the ones that I dragged to the ON MY MAC folder.
I read somewhere I should click 'rebuild' from the menu, but when I do that, exactly nothing happens. I tried rebooting, force quitting Mail, but none of that works either. So... HELP!
I really hope somebody can help me out, this is extremely frustrating: I have all my mails since 2004 in that archive, but if I can't search the folder, it's almost worthless!!

Shuffle will play but not charge. Help please!!!

My shuffle will play songs but when I try t plug into my computer it will not charge. My computer won't even recognize it. It only has a little bit of charge left. Does anyone know what is going on with it? Is it dying?

Well, now I'm starting to worry. I'm coming up on the 13-month mark myself.
You might indeed be correct about your 'mechanicals' evaluation, but there's no way short of disassembly, inspection and testing to determine that. Someone, sometime is just going to have to take that on.
The disassembly part looks dead easy and it should be simple to at least check for continuity from the plug down to the end of the ribbon connector. Maybe I'll buy another 'dead' one off of eBay and look into it (the first 'dead' one I tried turned out to be very much 'Alive On Arrival', no very big surprise, and is now camped in a daughter's eMac).
If you're still doing last-gasp things on your Shuffle, in the meantime, I'd be trying the following in your place:
a) Plug it into a valid charging port/dock/etc. for an extended period of time, a couple or three hours at least. You might see it mysteriously mount; this will be welcome but won't provide any real answers. If nothing else, this will allow the battery to charge if it's going to at all, albeit with no indications.
b) Log out to a Restart, then open a new/go to a different User Account with Admin privileges.
c) With iTunes off and iPS not plugged in, locate and open your lastest iPod Updater. I use 2005-11-17.
d) When it says to plug in the iPod, turn the Shuffle ON and then plug it in. Now wait for it to mount on the Desktop and to be identified in the Updater. Be patient, give it some time; I'd probably let it soak for 10-15 minutes or so.
e) If no mounting, then — with it still plugged in, if at all possible, one place where the Dock shines — manipulate the controls. Triple-click the Play/Pause, then turn the Power to OFF for 5 seconds or so, then back on. (Note: Apple instructions only call for a Reset, i.e., PWR OFF for 5 secs., but some anecdotals seem to indicate the Playlist Reset also seems to help).
f) If you have to unplug to manipulate, then do that and plug it back in
g) This might kickstart it into mounting. If so, fine. If not, unplug and turn OFF the iPS, close the Updater, then repeat from (c) above.
h) I'd give it three times through the sequence, which seems like a fair enough shot at working.

Hi James thanks for the advise I tried calling them yesterday and they ran me through loads of tests to do and still don't have wifi calls as they have said either a problem with carrier settings or ios8.4 and might have to wait for Apple to do an update before it works for me again not happy as I rely on wifi calls as I have no signal at work or at home without it.

At first it would only charge if i placed it in a specific way but now its not charging at all. Its brand new only got it a week ago and it had these charging issues out of the box. I've tried dragging the icon to the trash can and it will not eject. I've tried at startup option-command-o-f and nothing happens. I cannot get a prompt. Where or how do I type in commands to make the firmware eject this disk. Can anyone help me on this problem.

Try restarting while holding down the mouse, or try starting up while holding down the Eject key.

Google Apps IMAP not instant anymore - help!

I have been using google apps email for over a year and just recently switched from POP to the IMAP settings. I was receiving all emails to two of my domains instantly and what ever I read on my BB, was marked as open on the web interface.
Sometime 2 days ago, I started noticing that email from one of these accounts was coming through either delayed or in some rare instances, not at all! I promptly went in, resent my service books - nothing. Then deleted and recreated those two accounts. That seemed to work initially (back to instant push) but then slowly, it degraded back to polling every 15 mins or so...sometimes even more than that....if I go into gmail settings and forward all incoming email to my BB.net email address, I get instant forwarded email....
Any ideas on what is going on with my email? Is there anything I can do to fix this? I am a doctor running my own company and instant email is very crucial to me/our organization.

I've had the same problem. I've heard of other users experiencing the same problem. We've all concluded (without any facts) that it's a by-product of the upcoming update to BIS 2.6 which promises better integration with Google Mail.
If anyone has anything else definitive, I too welcome it.
