IMac wont sleep after 10.6.3 update

I just bought a new 27" iMac i7 on saturday, I barely had time to do anything to the machine before I updated on monday to 10.6.3. The iMac was going to sleep just fine before the update, now when I put the iMac to sleep, it will go to sleep, but after a few minutes it wakes itself up. I've looked at my sys.log, but it doesnt give me any reason for it's wake up.
Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know of a solution?
The whole point of replacing my MacPro with this iMac was to save a bit on electricity costs. But now that point is moot because I cant put it to sleep! Please help!

HI,
First, try Resetting the PRAM
Restart your iMac. If the problem persists, try Resetting the SMC
Sorry you are experiencing problems with a brand new iMac! If you did not repair disk permissions, do that. Repair permissions after every software update.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

intel imac wont start after i changed my hard drive permission to let me read and write, then i clicked apply to all enclosed files.i turned it off no problem. then it never started up again in os x. the grey screen with apple logo appears, then after a minute it restarts, and will keep doing that if i let it. i can start up in windows xp, but i dont know how to do anything in windows xp that will affect os x. i can use the hard drive in target mode, but i cant figure out how that can help me. i use a macbook to view target disk. ive spent hours looking through help and support. finally i do not have the os install disks. PLEASE HELP!

My apologies for the inept instructions.
Restart normally. Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Paste the commands in the Terminal application to avoid typos:
    sudo su
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted.  It will not be echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again. Now paste each of the following at the prompt and press RETURN after each.
    chown root:admin /Applications
    chmod 0775 /Applications
    chown root:admin /Library
    chmod 1775 /Library
    chown root:admin /System
    chmod 0775 /System
    chown root:admin /Users
    chmod 0775 /Users
    chmod -R -N /Applications
    chown -R :admin /Applications/*
    Again, my apologies.

  • IMac will not auto sleep after 10.5.7 update with Safari 4 Beta

I've noticed that my new iMac 24" will not automatically sleep after updating to 10.5.7. Actually, that's not completely true, I've just discovered that if Safari Beta 4 (latest update) is open the iMac will never sleep automatically, but that if Safari is not open, automatic sleep works perfectly as it always did with 10.5.6. I've repeated this test numerous times and it's always consistent. Anyone have any ideas how to solve this?

Sorry that I do not remember where I saw this, could be MacFixIt, but the advice that I saw for issues with the 10.5.7 delta that comes through Software Update for folks with 10.5.6, was to download and overlay the 10.5.7 Combo as Carolyn has suggested, and then to download and install the most recent beta for Safari 4.
Of course this is best done without multitasking while the installations are happening, as well as unplugging and shutting down all other processes; external attachments and even Bluetooth and Air Port. Prepare for the installs by rebooting to your Install DVD and use Disk Utility in the Utilities Menu to verify and repair any issues with your boot volume, followed by rebooting into your account and using DU in Apps/Utilities to Repair Disk Permissions before and after the installs.

  • HT5549 trouble putting iMac to sleep after installing this update?

I can't put my imac to sleep anymore after installing the security update for Java. Is anyone else having this problem?

I had the download file open all the time and closing that has solved (looks like) the problem.  However, this was not an issue while I use the regular mouse.

  • My iMac wont restart after my last update alumni keyboard

Please help, I am using my MacBook for this, my iMac will not restart after installing the last update, alumni keyboard....., after restarting, pushing the start button, all i see for hours, is the apple logo with the little circle spinning under the logo, please help, i already, disconnected, unplugged everything, used my original keyboard and mouse instead of my bluetooth, but nothing works, even ,power on while pushing option button etc. Anyone else know of this problem. Thanks in advance!

The long tone is an indication that a firmware update is installing. Do you get a progress bar at the bottom of you screen after letting the power button go?
Have you reset the PRAM? (cmdalt+PR when you restart the machine)
Also repair permissions when the machine is up and running.

  • Help... Mac cant sleep after 10.4.3 update...

When I put my rev. B Imac to sleep, it will wake up again by itself after 3-5 minutes and the fans will be running at full blast. I try to navigate around, but everything is frozen. The only way to get out of this is to manually power down the mac. I ran console and this is what it says...
    Nov 6 14:22:59 Erics-iMac-G5 configd[29]: AppleTalk shutdown failed, status = 71 (retrying)
    Nov 6 14:23:00 Erics-iMac-G5 configd[29]: AppleTalk shutdown failed, status = 71
Please help... this is very annoying.
    Thank you.

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
If that does'nt do it, post back
    Cheers!

Start up using your original install discs by inserting the disc and holding the C key while rebooting. Run Disk Utility to repair the drive and restart. If everything goes ok run Software Update again.

  • How can I put my iMac to sleep after it has finished downloading or uploading something?

For example: I have some photos and videos that I want to send to a friend. I'm uploading them to a site to do this, and they're quite big files (250 MB).
I'd like to do this at night, but I don't want to let the computer run all the night through, when this maybe only needs a few hours.
I can only guess how long it will take (judging by the time it tells me that it will take, if available), and then I can set the computer to go to sleep after X hours or minutes.
Can I not just simply set it in a way that it goes to sleep automatically after the process is finished? Like, if there's a connection to the internet, that is being used (downloads, uploads), then it shouldn't go to sleep, else it will interrupt the upload, and I can start again.
Also, I have an iMovie update now, which is over a GB of download.
I may be mistaken, but I have the feeling that for some Apple programs, it actually keeps the computer awake until the process is done. But it isn't the case with all programs, only with some.
It's really annoying. Does anyone know a solution? I know that there's this box that you can tick, that says something like to keep the computer from going to sleep if there's a network connection, but in earlier OS this was actually working! Now it's 100% useless.

You can just set your Mac to sleep using the Energy Saver in System Pref.  Set it to sleep after say, 2 mins of inactivity then check the Put Hard Disk to Sleep setting too.  It won't sleep while you are down/uploading.

  • AirPlay network discovery during sleep after OS 7.0 Update

After updating my Apple TV3 to OS 7.0 (6897.5), when it goes in to sleep it is no longer network discoverable as an AirPlay option on iPad/iPhone/iPod/Mac.
On OS 6.2 it was always showing as an AirPlay option when in sleep and would wake and play when audio/video was sent to it.
It now manually requires waking for it be discoverable on the network for an AirPlay option.
I have another Apple TV3 still on OS 6.2, which is discoverable during sleep and wakes when audio is sent to it, very hesitant to update now due to this issue.
It seems like more of a feature removal than a software/hardware fault?
Anyone else noticed this issue? Or found a fix?
Have restored completely earlier today but the issue still se

  • Odd sleep after 10.5.5 update

I have noticed some strange behavior from time to time after applying the combo update to two MBP's.
You put it to sleep, and shut the lid. If you raise the lid shortly thereafter (meaning your computer should awake), everything you hear indicates the computer is awake, but the screen is dark. You have to hard power off and power up and then things are fine..

  • IMac G3 goofy after 2006-004 security update

I originally posted this in the Safari forum and was re-directed here. After the latest security update, Safari acts very strange. Some pages open but most don't. I can only get to this discussion page by way of a link in an earlier email. www.foxnews.com works fine as does ebay.com. When I type in other addresses (including Google.com) I get a message that says "Safari can't open the page. The error was: "bad server response" (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011). Report the bug to Apple"...which I did. Several other weird things are happening---When I restart, I get a black rectangle inside the blue background as the system loads. Also my clock re-set to 12/31/69. My trash icon on the dock has disappeared, and 2 different printers refuse to print. The printers actually start and make a noise and even thread the paper through, but no printing is on the paper.
I have repaired permissions, zapped the pram, unplugged and restarted, removed some preferences like com.apple.safari.plist. I don't know what else to try.

    Hello again Barb,
Glad to see you took my suggestion & posted here. Here are my thoughts.
Do you have any logs in the Console like this below ?
: for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/iTunesHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/iT unesHelper malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 13 can't byte swap it)
•Do you have itunes in Account/Start up items if yes use the minus[-] to remove it from Start ups.
•Then go to Application folder/iTunes -> ( actions menu) Show package Contents/Resources/iTunes Helper move this to the desktop.
Next Go to HD->Library->Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
•So, just go to the Receipts folder, open it, go to list mode, find the iTune.pkg files, and put into your trash (but don't empty until you've made sure all this works for you) any iTunes.pkg files EXCEPT the ones mentioned above. You do need the iTunes.pkg files mentioned above, but you do not need the ones in your trash.
(NOTE. DO NOT remove any other files except the iTunes.pkg files mentioned.) None of this will affect your music library or music.
Then do a restart & run permissions repair.
The other issue you do not mention is Norton did you uninstall it ?
Which Norton do you use, you did not repy to that.http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2730248&#2730248
Look at macjack's post for the Unistaller.
Backup your files if you have not done so already. If the worse happens at least it will not be a disaster. Any q's please ask.

  • IMac will not wake from sleep after 10.4.8 Update

Recently after a couple of software updates my IMac goes to sleep and the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse will not wake it. The option for wake with Bluetooth is checked. I zapped the PRAM and also checked the HD, Nothing has changed. NOTE: No new software or hardware installs were done except for 10.4.8 update and the other mac software updates. This did not happen in prior versions of the OS on my iMac. Is this a new bug?
iMac G5 1.8 (pre iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Bluetooth, Wake from Sleep

I've been dealing with this same issue, have tried everything, but to no avail. After MANY sessions on the phone with Apple tech support, as well as an Apple product specialist, I was advised to erase my computer and do a fresh install. I did an archive an install, which didn't help, but am not thrilled about the prospect of erasing everything and starting over. This problem started after the August 2006 round of updates. I feel it's bluetooth related, because I used a usb keyboard and mouse for a week as a test, with no problem. The funny thing is, I unchecked "allow bluetooth device to wake computer" thinking it might help, but the bluetooth devices continue to wake the computer anyway (except when it refuses to wake, of course!)

  • IMac takes 30  seconds to sleep after 10.8.5 update.

Recently, and just after installing OS X 10.8.5, I've noticed that my 2012 27" iMac takes at least 30 seconds to go into sleep mode upon choosing so from the Apple dropdown menu. Prior to installing OS X 10.8.5, my iMac would go to sleep in less than a second. I've looked up this isse on the support communities and have tried many of the suggestions, including checking print cues and resetting the SMC and PRAM, but all to no avail. I haven't installed anythign new on my computer, but my huntch is that there is some type of application lagging which causes the computer to take so long to sleep. Is there a way to go about searching for the culperet program? Or any other suggestions? Also of note, if I restart the iMac, wait for it to reboot, and then quickly put it to sleep, it goes into sleep mode normally, however after about 10 minutes of using the computer, if I try to sleep the iMac it will take upwards of 30 seconds to sleep.
    Thanks,
    Regards--- jgurbisz

I am on a Mac Pro 2.8 (3.1) 2008 model.  12 Gb ram and a radeon 5870.  This supplemental update has been pretty horrible.  I have had the following issues: messed up sleep, random wake ups, and one hard crash.  I have also had the long sleep delay where the fans crank up and it takes forever to sleep...only a restart cures this, which is pretty useless.  The mach file showing but that was fixed with a terminal command.  Lost video chat icon on iMessage for a while but that has now mysteriously returned.  The last annoying bug I have suffered with is what seems like horribly reduced audio quality out of the Apple LED 24 inch cinema display speakers.  It sounds like 22kz mono both input and output.
I would rate this update a full on zero out of ten, for creating problems that never existed in 10.8.5.

  • IMac wont boot after update had an error.

My iMac freezes when trying to start up after an error occured when trying to do it's automatic apple software update. Stays on a white screen with time cirlce going round and another circle with a diagonal line thru it.  Said it would re-download updates when it had booted back up. but now it will not boot.  Is there anything I can do or is it serious?

Start your Mac with the original DVD that came with the computer and run disk utility on your hard drive to repair it. Also repair your permission then restart your iMac normally.
