Image management workflow.

Hi
I've been using Aperture for a while now and I generally import to the AP library then archive to a separate drive and/or DVD.
I am about to go on a job and want to produce a streamlined workflow for the file management. Basically we will be using my clients Laptop with AP but I will need all the images transferred onto my iMac when the job is complete so that I can finish the image processing/tweaking. Also I would like a back-up of the images on two separate hard drives as the job progresses.
If this is enough info could someone explain the best workflow ie referenced masters, exporting projects etc
Thanks in advance.

Steve or other person of knowledge,
I read your response with interest. You seem to think that the ratings will export from AP and the re-import... That for me is very interesting. I have tried this between AP and iPhoto and between those two it unfortunately does not seem to work or I am doing something wrong. Do you have any insights as to why this would be and how I could resolve this?
Why?...:
I am trialing Aperture (strictly as an amature) to use it for managing the workflow (importing RAW off D80 while renaming, rejecting, rating, key-wording and adjusting some for lighting problems). The filed RAW images to that point become the originals archive.
Then I would like to export anything rated 3 star or higher to iPhoto as a <1mb JPG for use by the rest of the family on the MAC or Apple TV etc. The problem with the transfer to iPhoto is that the ratings get lost and the smartfolders don't pick up the right images.
You may ask: why not use AP full stop. Answer: maybe I should, but I like the iPhoto simplicity and especially the way it works with events. Also family use of that does not threaten the AP library.
Can you help with this, even if it means advising I am doing things in the wrong way.
Many thanks, Floor

  • Offline Image Management

All of the other Digital Asset Management (DAM) software packages that I have used manage offline storage. Some have built-in capability to burn CD/DVD's; others just recognize that it has been done. However, all of them track the offline media by serial number, and allow the user to assign a more friendly name to the disk. This allows one to locate the disk containing an image. Without this, support for offline images is not particularly useful.
So far as I have been able to determine, Lightroom does not provide any capability for this. In particular, when I import images from a CD (leaving them in place), Lightroom recognizes the drive on which the CD is mounted. When I attempt to reference the images later, with the CD unmounted, Lightroom provides the standard Windows dialog box to find a missing file.
Is there some capability for Lightroom to manage offline images that I have not found? If not, has anyone looked into coordinating it with a real DAM package? I like Lightroom's workflow and raw conversion, but I need image management, too.
    Thanks,
    David

Thanks for that pointer. I have a PC rather than a Mac, but that may be effective on a PC, too.
However, what I'd really like Lightroom to do is integrate with iMatch. It tracks offline images, and names of mountable media (i.e., CDs and DVDs). It also scales very well, and is quite fast.
The problem I have had with iMatch is that it is not integrated into my workflow, and I tend not to enter relevant metadata for my images for relatively long periods of time. Then, of course, I have a lot to do, and it's a chore. If I were able to enter metadata - categories, keywords - in Lightroom, as I process my images, and then easily import that metadata into iMatch, I would be much happier.
I'll look around in the iMatch forum some more. Most of the discussion I saw there looked a little backwards to me - it was about moving images and metadata from iMatch to Lightroom.

  • Color managed workflow for web and camera raw

I recently calibrated my monitor and was wondering what is the preferred workflow for the web? I shoot with my camera in sRGB and my working space in Photoshop is sRGB aswell. The problem that has arised now is that the color managed colors in Photoshop are way different than the non-color managed in my web browser. Is this normal? And what I don't quite get is how a photo that has an embed sRGB profile looks the same in Firefox (that understand embed profiles) and Photoshop, but in Google Chrome (that does not recognize embed color profiles) shows the colors very differently, although the browser should understand the photo is in sRGB by default and show the same colors that are in Photoshop, right? So what happens here, because the colors are not the same? What information does Photoshop assign to the embed color profile that makes the colors so different?
Anyway, I assume the problem here seems to be my newly calibrated monitor profile. The only way I can get the same colors to my photo in Photoshop and to a photo in web is to use soft proofing set to my Monitor RGB AND save without a color profile. Is this the way to go? But here comes another problem. I shoot in RAW and use camera raw to edit my photos. Camera Raw doesn't allow soft proofing, so I'm stuck with these color managed colors that are so different from non-color managed colors I get in my browser that any color correction in Camera Raw is simply useless. Unless everyone was using color managed browsers and I could start to use fully color managed workflow, but that's not the case I suppose. So, what's the solution here?

First off, you need to be working in sRGB, or converting to sRGB when you save out files that are destined for the web. You can change the color space that Camera Raw (ACR) send your raw files to by clicking the blue text in the bottom center of the ACR window. This is probably that safest workflow for you until you get a handle on color management. If the color of your images is very important, you might consider embedding a color profile in them, which will help color managed browsers render your color properly.
If your display's color gamut is different than sRGB (many are), you'll find matching colors for non-color-managed browsers to be impossible. But consider the average display and take heart. The best you can do is correct to a standard and hope for the best.
Both the convert to sRGB and embed color profile options are in the save for web dialogue box.

  • InDesign color management workflow help

    Hello,
I recently had to create a 60 page color booklet for a University on a very tight schedule. The booklet was to be printed to press. I was not given any specifics as to the output specifics.
So, I was creating vector graphics in Illustrator as CMYK, and importing them in InDesign. And receieving e-mail with bitmat images in formats from JPG, TIFF, PDF, PNG. and I would place them directly into InDesign. If I had to do any photoshoping of a picture, I would conver the sRGB original to CMYK.
I have been reading discussion about color management workflow. But I am still not clear what I should have been doing with the roughly 100 image files sent me to be in the booklet?
Somewhere I read the way I did it was okay, as long as I let InDesign handle image conversion on the output? Is this correct? When I went to make my Package for the printer, I did get the Triangle "warning" that some images were sRGB. The PDFs looked great.
What should I have done as all these images came in? It was a crazy deadline. I can't imagine having to open every image in Photoshop -Convert to CMYK-Adjust colors and resave and import?
And what do you do if you don't know the specific output printer? I default to SWOP.
So, will InDesign, convert any incorrect (sRGB etc) images on the final output to the proper colorspace to be printed properly?
    Thanks
    Robin

InDesign will convert RGB to CMYK when you're exporting as PDF files IF (big IF) you choose PDF/X-1a as your PDF preset. Some of the other PDF presets (e.g., Press Quality) don't do this conversion. Their color conversion setting is No Conversion.
SWOP is a reasonable output assuming your printer didn't give you a customized CMYK profile to install with instructions to install it (most North American printers don't do this).

  • Digital Image Management

I am losing it trying to use Apple's tools for file image management.
I have been an IPhoto user for many years, have dutifully gone through multiple upgrades, and I need some help on how to manage a large burden (opportunity?) of images. I currently have a 138Gb IPhoto '08 image file that I dutifully copy between the three machines where I routinely edit images, and add more by the week.
They are in an IPhoto file for initial sort and management as well as the frequent snapshot prints for family and friends. The file is too big for comfortable use since I use my MBPro, Mac Pro, and IMac to edit and print these images, and the simple job of synchronizing the image files between three machines is too great a burden.
    1. I use Aperture 2, with occasional further editing in Photoshop CS3 as the very selective and final tool. I use Iphoto as the only place where all the images are stored or maintained.
    2. Considered using a file server, and tried it, but it is too slow to update or use it for realtime image acquisition over ethernet speeds. Also, most of the images are at least initially acquired to the MacBook Pro in the field or far away, and not at the base location. Similarly, tried to build an FTP server, but internet speeds are too slow to make this a practical solution.
    3. Considered trying to separate the images into different IPhoto files by year, but am terrified that I will lose the metadata attached to them, as well as the references from Aperture. I never have imported the images into Aperture, only use the Aperture's reference tools for locating the images.
    3. Surely I am not alone in this problem, and there must be some others who have found easy and effective workflows to manage their images using the Apple applications on multiple Macs.
Any help or direction or help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your response.
I am confident that Aperture has more refined and comprehensive tools, and I will need to read more on its file management capabilities. Alas, the documentation on Aperture 2 is modest at best, and I will need to search out your reference.
I enjoyed reading several excellent books on Aperture 1.5, but there have been many changes, and with the exception of Apple's Training Series offering, I find no books at Amazon currently available on Aperture 2. It is just too soon.
My other concern is for portability of the images. I really do work on several machines at varying times, and for various reasons. So it is critical that I be able to move the image files from machine to machine, and be confident that I am not losing anything in the way of edits, metadata, etc. I also would need to be able to manage multiple smaller image files than the 138 Gb my current IPhoto images require.
So, I will work to get this figured out, and I appreciate your direction on some documentation.

  • Remote system image management

This is more of an image management than a package management question but the appropriate forum was read-only.
I'm looking into possibly using zen for managing software on an embedded system, but I have some requirements that I would like to know if zen is capable of handling.
The target system is a dual boot linux box. There are 2 bootable partitions, each with a different software version. I need to be able to upload and install a linux boot image to the non-active partition and update grub to allow access to the newly unpacked image. The user can then reboot into the other partition to activate the new software. If there's a problem they can reboot back into the previous version.
We've done this with home grown tools before but there is a desire for better integration with enterprise level management tools.
I'm not set on handling this exactly as described, so if Zen can manage something similar I would be interested in knowing how and would consider adapting our procedure to work with Zen.
Please cc any responses to bruce.edge<at>gmail.com

  • How do I use copyprofile, image manager and create a wim file to Sysprep a reference Windows 8 computer.

Im trying to deploy a reference machine (configured) to other machines (exact or close image) with different hardware.
I have successfully used sysprep in out of the box, generalise, shutdown mode although i havent tried to deploy this to another device.  Unfortunately it doesnt copy the profile to default.
I understand that I have to create an answer file using image manager based on that image, save it to a usb drive and attach this in the sysprep command line when sysprepping it.
My problem is I dont know how to easily capture an image of windows 8 into a wim file so that i can add this into image manager to create a answer file.  Im also not sure what I have to do in image manager, is it a simple matter of creating and saving
the answer file or do i have to configure it to copy the profile specifically (theres only one account anyhow).
I also want to know if i have to attach the drivers or are all the standard drivers put into the sysprep image as standard.  I would like the machine to be an exactly replica, same as doing a clone (but with the drivers for the new machine installed
so it will boot) same as doing a clone and then repair? If thats possible.
Any specific instructions on this would be helpful.  I have read the microsft links but they are somewhat confusing.

I know this is a very late response but I thought I'd post for others who search.
The easiest way to create the .wim file is via WinPE, this guy's two YouTube videos explain the entire process in detail -
Windows 8 ADK Part 1: Capture an OS image - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJ8zKX_8E9w
Windows 8 ADK Part 2: Windows Image Deployment - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHIvoqSw_FI
Here's a quick rundown from my notes:
    WINPE
Create WinPE via imaging tools command prompt
    copype amd64 c:\winpe
    makewinpemedia /iso "c:\winpe" "c:\winpe\winpe64.iso"
    UNATTEND
    Open Windows System Image Manager
    Configure unattend.xml
    Save unattend.xml to sysprep folder
Create script and save it to sysprep folder to launch sysprep with unattend
    @echo off
    cd C:\Windows\System32\sysprep
    Sysprep /oob /generalize /unattend:C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\unattend.xml
    SYSPREP

  • Lightroom image management - ready for professionals?

    Hi
I have a client, which is doing professional gardening photography for various magazines in this topic. Her business ranges from magazine reports about individual gardens to delivering single images to different publishers as requested (for example by flower type, color etc.). The main thing is that her image portfolio isn't organized so much in individual shoots or contracts. An image can be sent to many publishers at any time. She needs to kepp track of this. She needs to know, which image has been published when and where.
Before moving to digital recently, she kept track of here jobs with cumulus, which had more database capabilities, but much less possibilities in image adjustment. Shooting only raw with a Canon 1 series camera, she choosed Lightroom as here image editing and managing tool. Beeing pleased with the friendliness of the user interface and many of its image editing and managing capabilities, she (actually we) are astonished, that even in a version 2 it is still not really possible to keep track of what happens to the images in a professional environment (despite the claim of Adobe that the product is made for professionals).
In essence the program isn't really capable of managing image data, which has a one to many relationship to the image (i.e. the instances of cases an image is sent to a customer). We experimented with virtual copies, which can carry individual metadata, collections (which cannot carry metadata) or storing the required data in the large description field. None of these possibilites were really satisfying. The most promising solution in using virtual copies, ended up in a maintenance nightmare, because it was too easy to forget, where to do which data management (at the master raw file or at the virtual copy).
Then, I learned that with Lightroom 2 there is a possibility to extend metadata, but, unfortunately with the usual limitation of not supporting one to many data (in the SDK-documentation called "spreadsheet type data"). The rest of the SDK documentation did not reveal any other helpful way of solving the problem as the SDK deals mainly with export plugin programming or web stuff, which is of no use to the client. It is rather disappointing that Lightroom's extensibility is still so limited. Where is the programming interface, that allows the development of complete new modules?
Given the slow pace, Lightroom development takes (I can expect that "breakthrough" extensions to the SDK will take even longer), I guess that my client can wait for another 3 or 5 years until anything close to true image management will come up.
So we have to look for some intermediate solutions. Whereas other software (expression media, idimager, cumulus) may have better database capabilities, they lack in raw editing completely and are often more awkward to use. Therefore, I would like to ask the community here, how they handle the tasks described above with Lightroom or with other tools? Perhaps we have overlooked a Lightroom capability?
One thing I thought of is to develop a special keyword hierarchy for contracts, but this also would not allow, all the images tracking needed.
Any ideas? I guess there aren't any plugins, which can deal with one to many data.
    Kind regards
    Thomas

Actually, we haven't ruled out keywords yet, in fact, at the moment it seems to be the only realistic possibility. However, I wonder if a growing keyword hierarchy can become unwieldy at the end, so I am sceptical, if this idea would deliver.
In general, I think that Lightroom should more move into the direction of beeing a platform for other vendors. The limitation to web stuff and export solutions isn't enough. I hope to see third party vendor modules, eventually one which provides more professional image management and tracking capabilites, exploring the fact that Lightroom has a database underneath it.
I would like to see a DxO raw conversion module or a lens correction module, fields where I think Lightroom and ACR are still not the best in its class (I think LightZone and DxO are the better raw processing engines).
Unfortunately, I do not see Lightroom going much into this direction. Probably this is already too late for the version 3 release, due in 2010 (?), so we need to wait until v4 (in 2012 ?) until the situation improves?
I believe many customers (especially professionals with precious time) need a fully integrated system, which can do image management and image adjustment at the same time. Lightroom is the right platform for it, if Adobe let it be.
    Kind regards
    Thomas

  • System Image Manager

Where can I download the Windows System Image Manager?
I want to setup a preinstallion image and I need to generate an answer file but I need the SIM.

WSIM is part of the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK).  Download it here:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c7d4bc6d-15f3-4284-9123-679830d629f2&DisplayLang=en

  • Image Management System

Is it possible to employ photoshop album starter edition as an image management system for our College staff? The system would require to be searchable over out Intranet and contain many images.

It depends exactly what you want to be able to do. I doubt very much whether you could really get the functionality you'd need, as it's not was PSA SE 3 was designed for.
The paid-for versions have slightly more flexibility, but they are not designed to be multi-user. There are other products designed for such purposes, but they tend to be a little costly.

  • What/Where is the 32-bit version of Windows System Image Manager?

I'm running into the problem described as follows in the WAIK documentation:  "Windows SIM fails to create a catalog for a 32-bit Windows image from a 64-bit version of Windows SIM. To workaround this issue, use the 32-bit version of Windows SIM to
create catalogs for your Windows images."
Question: Where is the 32-bit version of Windows SIM? I can only find a single download for "The Windows® Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows® 7"
Or are the 32-bit tools included in that version? If so, how do I use those instead?

    Hi,
The issue should occurs when you install the WAIK on a 64bit Windows 7 machine.
You need install WAIK on a 32bit machine.
Different binary versions of Windows SIM cannot create catalog files for some Windows images of different architecture types. We recommend using the
32-bit version of Windows SIM to create catalog files because this version can create catalogs for all Windows image architecture types. The following list describes the Windows SIM architecture types and catalogs that can be created for each Windows
    image architecture type.
    x86 Image Manager. Can
create catalogs for x86, x64, and Itanium-based Windows images.
    x64 Image Manager. Can
create catalogs only for x64 Windows images.
    Itanium-based Image Manager.
Can create catalogs only for Itanium-based Windows images.

  • Upload/Insert PDF with Image Manager

I used to be able to insert a PDF and MP3 file through the Image Manager within the Item Description area but for some time have not been able to. I had asked the question in the old forums to no resolve. I've tried multiple sites from multiple browsers on both Mac and Windows but same issue.
    What I do:
1.) From within any webpage/web app item description text area, I click on the Image Manager icon (little picture with sun and mtn. in the toolbar above the text area) and the Image Manager opens up.
2.) Now the Image Manager DOES allow me to upload both PDF and MP3 files onto the server from here (which is good). Then I go to the list and find the file on the server, I'll select the file and then click on "Insert" but the Image Manager just closes and nothing is inserted into the Item Description area.
This had worked for many years and like I said I can't get it to work in any testing scenerio. Same issue everytime when inserting, nothing gets inserted. The only alternative is manually inserted the href into the HTML but several of my clients have difficulty with this and it used to work before.
I know it's been stated that the Literature/Media Module is how you handle files but this is way more cumbersome then it should be and the way I and my clients used to do it through the Image Manager worked great. Any help or clarification would be great. I can't even find if this is a feature done away with. Thank you for the help.

    Tersieff,
I know you mentioned it had worked for your over the years. However I would recommend using the either the file manager or better the media downloads to upload and manage your media files. I see that it would come in handy to be able to select the file through the image manager, but I don't think it's working for media files other than images. Using the media downloads you will be able to provide a download link to this file, the downside is that you will have to manually enter the module for each media download within the item description.

  • Scanner calibration for colour-managed workflow

I would like to do a decent calibration of my Epson V750 Pro scanner to achieve a colour-managed workflow. I have the latest version X-Rite i1 Photo Pro 2 calibration kit, and although this enables me to calibrate my monitor and printer, it does not support scanner calibration.  I do have Silverfast Ai Studio which includes a scanner calibration facility - is that the best available to me or are there any other options, possibly using the i1 spectrophotometer as I know that it used to be possible to carry out calibration with the older versions of that equipment? Other than that, I'm using an Espon 3880 printer, running Vista x64 and using Photoshop CS5.

Mike is probably right, the Epson profiles available in the Epson scanner sw are close enough. I;ve never seen any ******** about scanner output in this forum.
