Image slideshow in FCE project - output for a computer monitor

Hi
I tried using iPhoto to export a QT file of an image slideshow. I thought it'd be a quick and dirty way to get an image slideshow for a short film. Rather too dirty, though. I guess there is heavy compression used, because the image quality is poor.
Also, I'm getting some kind of interlacing issues (flickering). I know I should be viewing on a TV, but this project is for output on a computer display.
I tried download StillLife, but this is also giving me poor quality images. I think of myself as having a fairly good grasp of resolution issues, but I can't quite get my head around what I need to do. Do I have to simply import each JPEG into FCE and add keyframed movement manually? Will this help resolution/output issues?
Many thanks

.. I tried using iPhoto to export a QT file of an image slideshow....
I would start here to play on the knobs&sliders ..
what were your settings for export? "QT file" => that is many dozends of options of compression, codecs, resolutions, etc. pp ...
the consumer apps FCE and iM are meant for TV display only => reduced res + reduced colors, quality reduced due to interlace (due to TV standards) ...-
a Full Res, h264 encoded qt.mov should display your photos in shining quality ...

  • How do I add an output for a 2nd monitor?

I have a mac mini that was purchased in 2009 I believe, maybe 2008. The operating system has been upgraded to Snow Leopard. I want to add a 2nd monitor, so I can use 2 at the same time, however, there is only one output. Is there a way to add an output for a 2nd monitor? OS is 10.6.X. not at the computer right now to check.
    Thanks for input.

If the back of your mini looks like this:
    - then you have two display ports already (Mini DVI Port and MiniDisplayPort). I only mention this, as it may not be obvious! You just need the right adapters to feed your two monitors.
    If it looks like this:
    - then you do indeed only have one display output (DVI) and then ignore me, and listen to Asatoran!

  • Need A Way to Show Project Progress Viewing on Computer Monitor

I need to show the work I am doing to get approvals as I add new footage and employ transitions and keyframes to product images being shown on a 'retail store' video.
Right now, I simply watching results on the canvas to monitor playback. The problem with the canvas is that, for showing work to others, it is too small and shows too much editing work with keyframes highlighted, which is a distraction from being able to see it more like it would play on a TV as a finished product.
I'm not ready to add more equipment or monitors at this point, but would like to know what the best way is to show work in progress for review on the computer monitor where I am doing the editing. Is it possible to playback work in progress in full screen mode or some other 'larger' way that gives a better idea of how it will look when finished.

Enlarging the Canvas window as Martin suggests is the only way I know of and then save a screen layout for easy recall.
Make the Canvas active and drag the bottom right corner to enlarge as desired.
Hold down the Option key and select Windows>Arrange>Custom Layout 2.
Next time you want to display a large Canvas use Option-U to recall it.
Most likely the Timeline will be on top if you make the Canvas really big. Just click on the Canvas to it to the front.

  • Iweb auto adjust for different computer monitor settings

Nobody has the same display settings on their monitor, so how can I get iweb to auto adjust to different computer monitor settings?

Are you referring to screen size? If so many prefer to have their browser window set to the size they want unlike PCs in which the browsers usually always fill the screen blocking out the desktop.
Why not set your site width to a size that can be utilized by all, desktops, laptops and mobile devices. Apple recommends 980 pixel width for that.
There was a post about this some time ago with, if I recall correctly, some code to do that. I think Cyclosaurus posted it but am not sure.
I know its a personal preference but when I land on a site that forces my browser to fill the screen I leave and don't go back.

  • 40" Bravia for editing computer monitor?

I am purchasing a Mac Pro for editing both Avid and Final Cut Pro. I am a professional editor, so will only use the sytem for home editing 3 months a year. So... I would like to buy a high def TV for both editing and television watching (for the other 9 months). Questions:
Am i better off with a 32" Sharp Aquos (720p High Def TV) or the 40" Sony Bravia (1080p High Def TV)? How good will the picture quality be with either TV compared to a 24" Samsung COMPUTER monitor?
Can i shrink the size of the editing windows (bins, Source Recorder) on the 40" so the resolution remains better?
    Thanks in advance...

Can i shrink the size of the editing windows (bins, Source Recorder) on the 40" so the resolution remains better?
This statement makes it seems as though you're looking to use an HDTV as a second (or primary, maybe?) computer display. Meaning you'd feed the HDTV via DVI (or VGA) from you're Mac's video card. Is that correct?
If it is, then you'll probably be better off with the Bravia - but please confirm the exact specs when it comes to the DVI/VGA input. (Actually, do both models have the right input?)
The reason I mention this is because most 720p TVs (Sharp Aquos included) are actually 1366x768 displays. So for them to be fed by a computer properly, the computer's graphic's card must support 1366x768. Unfortunately, most Mac cards don't do 1366x768.
Most 1080p TVs, though, are true 1920x1080 resolutions and most Macs support that resolution.

  • VHS-like quality after HD FCE project exported for iDVD...ANy idea's

Shot on a HF10, project edited in FCE and exported to iDVD. Viewing it on a TV is like watching an extremely bad VHS tape. The image is very grainy and it looks horrible. When I play back the quicktime file on the computer, the quality looks fine. Is it a problem with the encoding in iDVD? Please help!

Yes and no... isn't that helpful?
You can't write things back to the camera from the Mac side, but you can within Windows using the software that came with the HF10.
What I haven't tried, but it might be interesting to do, would be to take a project, burn it as a BDMV folder via Toast, and then replace the BDMV folder on a flash card on the camera. I might try it and let you know what I find out.
Edit: Tried it - That's a definitive no

  • Correct FCE 4 Output for Blu Ray

    Hi,
    First post here...
I'm having a tough time figuring out how to export a finished HD project (made from AVCHD files) in a file format suitable for burning onto a blu ray disk (using Toast 9.0).
Do I export as AVI, QT Movie, MPEG-4?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for these replies.
I've notice that when I export from FCE to MPEG-4 the video looks terrible in Quicktime. Is this normal? Video exported in H.264 looks pretty good, but is a bit choppy. Will this choppiness go away once burned to a disk?
If it's so hard to get Blu Ray disks burned on a Mac, what's the point of being able to edit and export HD video?
Is there another way to get my rendered HD video from FCE onto my TV for family viewing? I'm not wed to a blu ray disk, I just thought that was the only way to get HD movies from FCE to my TV.
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • FCE HD Output to Sony Trintron Monitor Problems

I am trying to output my Program Canvas to my Sony monitor, via a Hollywood Dazzle Firewire converter. When the Dazzle is trying to output to monitor, I get a very pixelated image and distorted audio.
All the settings under view appear to be correct, with Apple Firewire NTSC. Are there any thoughts at to what I might be missing here that could help fix this problem.
    Thanks

Connect your DV cam & see if you can play your Canvas to your camera. If that works ok, then the problem is either in the Dazzle, the TV or your cables. I would suspect the Dazzle first, or perhaps the FW cable second. Check whatever you can on the Dazzle setup - there might be some DIP switches on the bottom that need to be set.
You might find some informative/revealing material in this review.
(fwiw, I've never been wild about the Dazzle products myself, the quality never seemed up to other products on the market.)

  • [W520] DisplayPort to dual outputs for 3 external monitors

I just discovered DisplayPort dual output adapters.  Example:
DisplayPort to dual DisplayPort, Lenovo brand.
DisplayPort to dual HDMI (currently out of stock).
Currently I'm using my laptop display plus two external monitors with one using VGA and the other using DisplayPort for three displays total.  Could I use one of these dual adapters to use three external monitors (plus laptop display) for four total displays?  All displays would be 1920x1080 or less.
    W520 i7-2720QM | 32 GB RAM 1333 MHz | FHD 1920x1080 | Quadro 1000M | Windows 7 & Ubuntu 14.04
    Crucial M500 480GB mSATA + 2 x 1 TB Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm | BIOS 1.38

Hi, just wanted to bump this thread because I have the same question (hope that's okay).
    I currently have:
    W520 screen
    External 1080p monitor
    External 1080p monitor
I'm hoping to keep those three displays but add a 1080p TV screen via an HDMI out. I would use the dual Displayport adapter noted above and a displayport-HDMi adapter I already have for the TV out.
If it is possible, would I be looking at a duplicate screen situation, or could I potentially extend my desktop past the three screens for totally new real estate?
    Thanks all!

  • Isn't 27" too big for a computer monitor?

Human being can adapt to every new thing, But will I be able to adapt to a 27" monitor. Currently I think my 18" pc monitor's size is decent, it took more than a year for me to be comfortable with its big size, I used a 14" inch CRT before that, and interestingly now I find 13" inch macbook pro quiet small and I am not comfortable with it. Maybe the most change is in websites and new softwares that pushes users to a special sized monitor. what's your opinion?

Apparently, Being comfortable with a computer screen is a much more complicated problem than I previously thought, It's not just the display size, many other factors contribute.

  • I was nearing final completion of an FCE project then.......

I was nearing final completion of anFCE project that I have been involved with for over a year and thenthe unthinkable happened. The project was at the 99.9% completionstage so I wanted to output it to DVD and have the general publicgive me some feedback.
I had FCE output a quicktime movie.
**Now here is the first thing that Iforgot what I did.. I either clicked hide FCE or I quit FCE.
I then opened Toast Titanium anddragged the project to it and clicked the button to make the DVD.
**For the first time Toast did notrecognize that there was an external DVD burner connected so I usedthe internal burner.
Toast completed the DVD and I could notget it to eject the DVD.
I could not force quit any program...In fact force quit did not recognize any programs active besides'finder'.
I could not shut down the computer. When the shut down command was clicked it just did nothing. Even whenyou held the power up button in it did **** down but when pressedagain it acted like it was in a sleep mode not off.
I had to shut the power off, to shutthe computer down.
When I restarted the FCE desktopproject icon had changed from a black box with FCE in it to thestandard FCE icon with the project name under it. When you opened itit was to an earlier edition of the project, about 7-8 months ago. Ican not find any FCE project folder that does not point back to thisearlier edition. I assume that all the current clips, V/o, stills, music etc are still on the drive but I can not figure how to get tothe latest edition of the project.
I do use 'time machine' but it backs uponly the internal drive so I do not think that it will be of use. AndI do not want to restore it to an earlier system until I am sure thatthere is no way to resurrect the FCE project folder for the latestedition.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. I am not a professional. I do this in a cabin in the remote Alaskanwoods for my pleasure, sanity and hopefully one day recognition.

Final Cut Express has an Autosave feature.  Hopefully you had it set in preferences to autosave a copy of your project file at reasonable intervals.  Look in the Autosave Vault (location is also set in preferences) and try opening the most recent Autosave copy of that project.
In addition to Autosave, it';s always a good idea to regularly backup any current project files to another volume.

  • IE 7 and 8, photos not loading, image slideshow not working

I have invested hours and hours and hours on my website, only to find out that what I see on my computer is not what others (users of IE versions 7 and 8) see.  I have determined from reading other queries on this forum that the Spry Image slideshow widget is a problem for just about everyone.  If this widget does not work in IE 7 or 8, is there another widget or another solution so that photos can be displayed on the website?
I would also like to know why some of the single photos on various pages do not load properly.

Spry version 1.6x does not work very well with Spry version 1.7. Hence you will have to treat both versions with soft gloves.

  • Exporting an FCE project for HD Blu-ray

I am new to FCE (and HD video). I have a video camera that is set up to export video in AVCHD h.264. The resolution is 1080x60i (1920x1080 pix at 29.97fps). The video bit rate of the recording appears, according to Canon's literature, to be 17MB/s (although this bit rate seems too slow given the amount of data that has to be transferred). The audio is Dolby stereo at 48KHz sampling rate, 192Kb/s bit rate.
I have transferred the video into FCE and completed my project. I would now like to create a Blu-ray disc of equal quality to the raw video data. That's my goal anyway.
    I understand that FCE cannot export AVCHD h.264. However, it does seem to be able to export using the MPEG-4, h.264 codec. Aren't these one and the same? I have tried to export via;
    Export->Using Quick Time Conversion...;
    Format=MPEG-4; Options;
    File Format=MP4,
    Video;
    Video Format = H.264,
    Data Rate = 17000 (kb/s),
    Image Size = 1920 x 1080 HD,
    Optimized for = CD/DVD-ROM,
    Frame Rate = 29.97,
    Key Frame = Automatic;
    Video Options,
    Restrict Profile to = Main,
    Encoding Mode = Best Quality
    Audio;
    Audio Format = AAC-LC(Music),
    Data Rate = 192 kb/s
    Channels = Stereo
Output Sample Rate = 48 kHz,
    Encoding Quality = Best.
I suspected the conversion from AIC would take a while. In fact, about 25 hours in, it created a file error. So I restarted the export with the bit rate reduced from 17 Mb/s down to 7 Mb/s. It finished the conversion in a little over 24 hours. Does anyone know why it crashed at 17Mb/s? Just as a sanity check, are these export times about right?
I then burned a Blu-ray disc on a LaCie d2 Blu-ray burner via Toast Titanium 10. The MPEG-4 file generated by FCE was about 800 MB, while the Blu-ray compatible file created by Toast was about 9.5GB (more believable). Also, looking at the file statistics in Finder, it says the Total bit rate is 1,949 . Any ideas as to why the size difference (compression differences)? Did FCE really output the MPEG-4 file at 1,949 Kb/s or KB/s? Bottom line, given the above, will I achieve my goal of maintaing original video quality given the above work path?
    Thanks.

Why don't you just export from FCE to QuickTime Movie (not QuickTime Conversion). That would give you a QT Movie in Apple Intermediate Codec at the full resolution of your video. You would import that file into Toast for burning. Toast will take care of the encoding burning to blu-ray.

  • Upgrading FCE 2 to FCE HD in mid-project--asking for trouble?

I'm in the middle of a couple of FCE projects using FCE 2.0.3, OS 10.3.9, and QuickTime 6.5.
To gain SoundTrack and LiveType (I have no desire to edit in HD), I want to upgrade to FCE HD, OS 10.4.9, and QuickTime 7.
My question is, after I do the upgrades, will I be able to open these FCE 2 projects into FCE HD, and continue to edit them as usual, just as though I had created them in FCE HD? Or will I have problems trying to convert FCE 2 projects into FCE 3.5 projects like that?
    Tom
G4 Quicksilver 1 GHz DP   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.5 GB of RAM

Well, I went ahead and upgraded everything, and I am now running 10.4.9, QT 7, and FCE HD (v. 3.5).
And nothing drastic has happened; in fact there have been no serious problems at all in editing old projects in the new version. Success!
What I discovered is that the upgrade is only an upgrade in the sense that you end up with a newer version of FCE, because the old version is still sitting right there in the Applications folder beside the new one, and can still be launched and run as before. So, after "upgrading," you can take your pick which version of FCE you want to run.
Apparently the FCE HD installer program detects the earlier version and extracts all the user information from it, since the registration box appeared with all the information already filled in, and the only serial number it asks for is the new one. But it does not preserve and carry over any user preferences, button bar additions, etc. As far as that goes, you are starting out brand new in FCE HD.
Now, when I open an old project into the new version of FCE, a dialogue box tells me that I can save the project as a new version with a new name, while leaving the old version alone, which is just what I have been doing, for backup safety.
However, the old FCE 2 projects seem to run just fine in FCE HD, with no glitches at all. I did receive one complaint from FCE HD, upon opening an FCE 2 project, that a certain clip "had different in and out points" than it was supposed to have, or some such thing, so I just deleted that clip and replaced it with a fresh copy and all has been well since.
So, I guess I can report to anyone else contemplating doing this that there are no serious problems or glitches to be encountered while upgrading FCE projects in mid-stream, so to speak. I have now been doing considerable editing on old projects in the new version of FCE with no problems whatsoever (knocking on my wooden head!).
And I really like LiveType and Soundtrack! The upgrade comes with a tutorial DVD that walks you through FCE HD, LiveType, and Soundtrack, and I have subsequently made my first animated titles and soundtracks, quite easily. Impressive! Gaining those two programs made the upgrades worth the trouble and expense.
My only gripe, a minor one, is that a lot of the Soundtrack loops seem geared to teen or twenty-something boys, since it contains so much trendy synthesized throbbing, and the "people" sound effects consist of a great deal of agonized screaming--just what I would have enjoyed at age 17, but not now, forty years later. I was hoping for a selection of more sedate and melodic-sounding loops. (The tutorial also employs a demonstration project showing athletic boys roller-skating across a vast mud flat at suicidal speeds, while holding large kites or sails for wind-propulsion. A fall or crash under those conditions would be spectacular, and I watched eagerly for one, but amazingly, not a single lad came a cropper--not in the chosen clips, anyway).
Now, can anyone tell me where I might acquire some more classical and mature music loops (symphonic, perhaps) for this wonderful program, Soundtrack?
    Tom
