Image tag issues {large_image} {tag_image}

Question

I'm having a devil of a time controlling my image sizes when I use the featuredproductlist tag.
Seems that the .photo css class is used in a number of ways and I don't see where the css is for controlling it.
Do you have some guidelines for displaying using the featuredproductlist tag and/or a way for me to know what size to make all my images depending upon:
{tag_image} = What size?
{large_image} = What size?
{small_image} = What size?
I have the ability to resize my image to anything that's needed but I'm using the Perfume theme and they have thumb, full, detail image size as well as banner, and some use of a 327x327 and 500x500 images??!
Any assistance and guidance with image sizing and resizing would be very helpful.

Liam,
In the small_product.html template there are tags for {tag_largeimage} and {tag_smallimage} and in catalogue.html there is a tag for {tag_image}.

{tag_smallimage_path}
Outputs the file path of the image; for example, /images/imagename.jpg
I'm using the Perfume template and if I FTP to the built site I can see they use image folders with images sized for Full, Detail, and Thumb of 600x400, 325x365, and 218x163 respectively. There are alos placeholder images for products at 327x327 and 500x500.
My main question is if I have to hand crop each image to fit into these size configurations or can I do something like:
