Images and Flash Catalyst.

I have an incredibly complex and image heavy website that I am building and I want to use Catalyst to build it.  If I do the dozens of images that are involved in this build make the file size of the SWF way too big and the download would literally take an hour or so.  I want to know if it is possible to link the image files externally from the SWF so the site can download really fast and the images download when the pages they are on is called.
I was thinking that this type of thing would require the use of Flex to access and rebuild the code linking to the image files so they could be stored elsewhere, maybe the assests folder.  If so then I can create the entire UI in Flash and have the images linked elsewhere.  I thought perhaps to build the image libraries (over forty image groups spread out over 60 pages) in Flash and link it as a seperate set of SWFs but I need to know more about how this works.
Any insights would be great.
Thank You,
Brett

(Sorry for my bad english, I have a french version and do not know the terms in english)
About pictures, to keep small the swf file, one solution is to store them in the 'assets' folder.
To do this : open 'bibliotheque',( beside 'calcs'), right clic over the names of the pictures and select 'link ...)
The 'assets' folder is loaded with the swf file to the server.
You can also simplify the pictures (but loss of quality) ...
In my site, all the big pictures and the videos are linked, the thumbs remain in swf file.
Hope this helps.

  • Dynamic link between Photoshop and Flash Catalyst does not exist

    Hi,
    I'm a french developer and I have a question.
I didnt find any Dynamci link between Photoshop and Flash Catalyst.
    Let me explain :
I have a photoshop file (.psd) and I import it into Flash Catalyst.
But I have some modification to do on my design file (psd) but the design does not update himself in Flash Catalyst .
Do you plane to add the possibility ?
    Thanks a lot !

Given that you named the class TextDynamicLayout, it implies you are trying to handle wordwrapping text.  That requires handing down the VBox's explicitWidth to the Text controls before they get measured.  Wordwrapping text can be any size so it needs to have its width fixed in order to determine its height.
The List classes do not support percentages on the renderers.  All renderers are effectively given a size based on the List's size (or DG Column size).  You can see how explicitWidth is handled in the default renderer by looking at the source for ListItemRenderer.as.
Note that VBox or any container makes for heavy and slow rendering.  That's why the default Flex renderers extend UIComponent and have custom measure() and updateDisplayList() methods.

  • New Images and Flash Content won't display

    Working in Dreamweaver MX.
Updating some content to existing pages with flash swf files
and jpegs in them. All of the old content works fine, but when I
replace old swf files with new, or add any new jpg files. I get a
broken link image in the browser, or nothing at all. All of the

  • Cannot import images into Flash Catalyst 5.5 on Windows 7 64bit

    Hello,
when i try to import any image (i tried it with .jpg .png and .psd) i always end up with a placeholder image on my stage that looks like this:
Can anyone tell me what might be wrong? When i load files that i created with the first version of catalyst i get the same result. All the images are replaced by the placeholder image
Edit: I just installed it on my old Windows XP System and it's working fine.

    Hello Chris,
i just tried it with a blank project. My code looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                   xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"

                   xmlns:fc="http://ns.adobe.com/flashcatalyst/2009"
                   width="100%" height="100%" backgroundColor="#FFFFFF" preloaderChromeColor="#FFFFFF"
                   fc:previewHeight="600" fc:previewWidth="800">
        <fx:DesignLayer d:userLabel="Ebene 1">
            <s:BitmapImage x="392" y="292" smooth="true"
                           source="@Embed('/assets/images/Chrysanthemum.jpg')"/>
        </fx:DesignLayer>
    </s:Application>
The image is present in the assets folder: (Chrysantheme.jpg)
I can doubleclick the image-name and get a preview of it. It seems to have importet correctly.

  • Flash Catalyst CS5.5 Crashes when importing photoshop document

I am trying to import a photoshop file authored in Photoshop CS5.1 into Flash Catalyst CS5.5, and Flash catalyst crashes every time part way through the import. A few specifics:
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    Photoshop CS5.1
    Catalyst CS5.5
I have searched this forum for suggestions, and I have tried a number of them:
    * Removing layers from the source psd file to find a culprit layer (Removing all but one layer still crashes)
    * Running Photoshop in 32 bit mode, dragging the layers to a new document and saving
    * Waving chicken bones over my laptop (Nobody really suggested this, for good reason -- it doesn't work)
I have also replicated this crash on other Macintosh computers running the same Catalyst and Photoshop versions.
I have included part of the crash dump below. I've highlighted the section that mentions how many crashes I've had. I am happy to provide .psd files to demonstrate the issue, and troubleshoot any way necessary.

Hum. Have you tried a new Photoshop file with say one layer in it and just a fill or something very basic, then importing that in?
This might tell us if it is the PSD that has the issue or the import engine in Catalyst.
You said you removed the layers. So you tried importing each of the layers one by one into Catalyst with success? Then that means you have one layer that is troublesome. I would suspect that there is a filter or effect that has been applied that source of the issue.
Have you read this? http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashcatalyst/articles/best-practices-flashcatalyst-photoshop. html

  • Can I use Flash with Flash catalyst?

I was wondering, since Flash Catalyst apparently only uses
"rudimentary animation", can I use Flash Professional with Flash
catalyst? I would like to do more complex animations, and I was
wondering if there was a way to import those animations into Flash
    Catalyst,

Flash Professional will definitely be the tool for creating
complex animation. The tweaks they have done to the animation
engine will blow away designers giving them intuitive tools to use
for creating animation. Designers will absolutely love how easy it
    is to animate now.
As for whether or not Flash Catalyst can handle that... From
the trial software I received at Adobe MAX... it appears you can
import SWFs. In fact, as soon as you import them, they start
playing right there in the IDE. But I am not sure how much control
you have over the SWF once you import it. No SWC import though.
I was curious if there are any round tripping features
between Flash Professional and Flash Catalyst. Because the way I
understand it, Flash Catalyst is a way for traditional designers to
use Fireworks, Illustrator and Photoshop to build RIAs... they said
    nothing of using Flash Professional.

  • Flash Catalyst Preview Beware

We installed this [Flash Catalyst & Flex 4 media we
received at Adobe Max] on our MacBook Pro with OS 10.4. It had
Adobe CS4 Design Premium installed on it. After the install, only
five items remain in my "Applications" folder. Luckily this system
is just a floater for us. But now I have to reinstall the OS and CS
    4. I have all kinds of free time for that. Please be
    careful!!!

There was a warning sent out to MAX attendees:
    quote:
    Adobe MAX 2008 Alert
    Tuesday, November 18, 2008
We have just discovered an issue that affects the Flex
Builder “Gumbo” installer for Mac OS X. When you
install the Flex Builder “Gumbo” preview build on Mac
OS X, if you select any folder other than the default, it may
delete all contents of that folder. The default installation works
    fine.
This issue will be fixed in future builds of Flex Builder
    “Gumbo”.
Flex Builder “Gumbo” on Windows and Flash
Catalyst are fine and have no installation issues.

  • Testing the water on possible Flash Professional and Flash Builder integration

    Hey,
I just wanted to throw this out here instead of the bug area to see if I'm off my rocker or I'm on to something.
Basically one of my major pains is that any application design I do, I do it in Flash Pro and I code in FB. Switching back and forth between apps just to press CTRL + ENTER seems like a) a waste of time and b) a waste of system resources.
So what I'm proposing is having FB integrate with FLA files.
When you create your product you have the option to specify a target FLA (or multiple with a build order) so that when you test your project it will actually build your FLAs in order (in the situation that the final SWF requires others) and you're off to the races.
You could also have the currently associated FLA files have a checkbox next to them which could temporally disable them for a build.
If you still need to make design tweaks later on, it's a mater of opening Flash and doing them, but it would be so slick to be able to have FB render the FLA for you in the same app (no more random CTRL+ENTER in FB anymore!)
As far as where it could go. I think it would work the best if it was just a new tab that could be added to the perspective. Would allow drag+drop of FLA files to it, drag+drop ordering and also have the checkboxes to disable any FLAs from the build.
So there we go, does that sound like a decent workflow?
    Cheers!

    Hi guys,
Have you considered Testing the water on doing your design work in the new Flash Catalyst software http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashcatalyst/ for your skins instead of Flash CS4.
You would be able to export directly in the new FXG format and integrate it directly in your FB4 coding.
There is a tremendous productivity potential gain there.
I am planning to abandon eventually completely Flash CS4 for both design  and coding and substitute it eventually by simultaneously working in FB4(coding) and Flash Catalyst(design) with input symbols directly linked to photoshop and illustrator related files.
For those of you who would like to wet their toes  and initiate  a quick dive, Lynda.com has already released, on june 11,  an 1h40 min course on this subject. Here are the details.
    Length: 1 hour
    Online Training Library® exclusive!
    Flash Catalyst Beta Preview
    with: Mordy Golding
Flash Catalyst is a new Adobe application that is currently in beta and available for downloading atlabs.adobe.com, that allows designers to quickly create interactive Flash content and rich internet applications without having to write a single line of code. In Flash Catalyst Beta Preview, Mordy Golding demonstrates a workflow that emphasizes the intuitive nature of the tool, and shows how to achieve results in a short time. Meant to bridge the gap between designers and developers, Flash Catalyst allows the designer to work with familiar applications, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, while automatically generating the necessary code in the background for the developer. Exercise files accompany the course.
    Topics include:
Creating interactive content from Photoshop and Illustrator design compositions
Turning ordinary graphics into functional components like buttons and sliders
Using smooth transitions and animation techniques
Moving content between Flash Catalyst and Flash Builder
    Declarative Graphics
Flex 4 will make good use of FXG, the new graphics interchange format used with the CS4 graphics applications. Flex 4 and Flash Player 10 can together render FXG graphical elements. These include:
    graphics and text primitives
    fills, strokes, gradients, and bitmaps
support for filters, masks, alphas, and blend modes.
FXG graphical elements can be used in Flex 4 in a number of ways. FXG elements can be used within an MXML file or component and can also be saved as an .fxg file format. The CS4 tools will typically export an FXG using the FXG 2008 namespace. Because these files are designed to be shared between graphical applications, you’ll find that they have a stricter format to what’s used in Flex; the Flex compiler will only use the FXG-specific tags. Adobe’s new application, Flash Catalyst, will make it easy to create FXG graphics compatible with Flex 4, which you can then use to complete your application’s user interface and appearance.
New effects have been added to Flex 4 that can also be applied to FXG graphical elements. These new effects will work on both new and old components alike. Standalone effects must now be declared within fx:Declarationstags instead of the body of the application. Once again, Flash Catalyst has additional tools to help make using these effects easier.

  • Flash Catalyst CS5 vs. CS5.5

I am trying to work between the version CS5 and CS5.5. I have CS5 at home and CS5.5 in my classroom. How do I save files I created with CS5.5 to version CS5 so I can continue work it at home?
    Thanks!

Round tripping between Flash Catalyst 1.0 and Flash Catalyst CS5.5 is not supported. When FC gained round trip support with Flash Builder, it had to migrate to the current version of the Flex framework. There is a education discount (if you qualify) for FC CS5.5.

  • Importing a custom component from Flash Catalyst with Assets

I am experimenting with Flash Catalyst to see if it would work well for us to create components for Flash Builder to use. As a test I created a very simple component with a Pie Chart and a button and exported it as a fxpl file. In Flash Builder I created a Flex library project and imported the component to it. When I tried to use the component in a trivial test app it gave me an error, saying 'Could not resolve <graphics:fc_pie> to a component implementation', presumably because it had not put the component files in the right place of the library tree - by default they were put in a folder at the same level as components but with the name of the component, below which it had a components folder and an assets folder. If I move the files in these folders to the corresponding folders under src then it works fine.
The question is, how do I get Flash Builder to do this correctly? I assume I'm missing something obvious but I am a real Flash Builder Novice and this process is about evaluating which tools to use. Sorry if I'm being a numpty. I'm using Flash builder 4.5 and Flash Catalyst CS5.5.
    Any help much appreciated.

If you look in the library panel, there should be an entry for your custom component - probably something like CustomComponent1.mxml. Drag this out onto the artboard to create a new instance of the component.
In the case of a custom component, you can't change much on the second instance. If you have something like a text input skin though, you can change the text it is displaying for each instance.
We are working on making this sort of thing easier in the future, so stay tuned

  • Editable Textareas in Flash Catalyst

    Hi all,
I'm brand new to Flex and Flash Catalyst, and I'm having some major issues doing what would seem to be a very simple task. In Flash Builder, I can add an <s:textarea> to a page and get an editable textarea, but I can't seem to find any way at all to add an editable textarea to Flash Catalyst so that I can add interactivity to it.
I've spent hours pushing buttons and searching Google, and I can't seem to make this happen at all. Am I missing something? Is it just not there?
    Thanks,

In the public beta we'll be releasing with the most up to date version of the Flex SDK. There's no way to actually change the SDK in the MAX build unfortunately.
