IMAP E-mail Issues, Help!

Just decided to go IMAP with all of my email accounts and devices. I was under the impression that emails should look the same on all devices (what's in my inbox, deleted, etc.) however, no email is showing up on my iPhone. It loads on to my machines, but not on the phone. It says 'downloading 1 of 14 messages' but never actually downloads any mail. Any help would be much appreciated!

IMAP server is fine. I only have problems with my iPhone. Even then, the problen is intermittent.
Screenshots:
This is typical. Old email is cleaned out, but new email is not displayed. Running update does nothing.
a While later update now brings in old emails. The date of the update is Wednesday, yet the previous Sundays emails are displayed. Running update again does nothing. After a day or two, it begins working fine. This situation happens over and over.

  • Serious Mail Issue - Help

    Hi,
    I can't use Mail anymore.
After clicking the icon I get the message 'Mail quit unexpectedly'.
Within a huge information report I see also:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x00000001016f6f98
Crashed Thread: 4 Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.default-priority
I should also say that I'm fighting with MobileMe on our new IPad...
But is was working fine so far until this afternoon.
I hope someone can help !
    Thanks.
    Fraenzchen

OK, I run disk repair utility before I opened this thread.
Now I created a new user account and started mail, successfully !
I logged off and re-logged on with my regular account and started mail, successfully !
    This is strange...
I still suspect MobileMe !!! Because meanwhile I also cut the link to MobileMe. Maybe that was the reason why mail worked fine again.
But I already connected MobileMe again, and Mail still works fine so far.
    Again, this is strange...
I think I need MobileMe support. I'll try to join a chat tomorrow.
    Thanks again.

  • E-mail issues help.....

If you delete your email account on the iphone do you delete it permanently?

No, you can add it back. If it is an IMAP or Exchange account the email contents will resync. If it is a POP3 account any mail on the phone will be lost.

  • Strange & first time mail issue, help anyone?

On .mac account, send mail to one correspondent results in her only seeing subject and nothing in body. Other correspondents from same account have no problems, this is the only person who cannot view. Confirmed in "Sent" Folder, entire message is visible. Awaiting results of sending email from different account, but anyone have similar experience? Thoughts? No viral activity on my end (and I do a daily virus check)
    Thank you in advance

Sending from your .Mac account via webmail access or via the Mail.app?
Is this a message received that was forwarded or a newly composed message?
Do you know which OS and email client this recipient is using?
If the same occurred with all recipients, then likely a Mail.app problem. Since it occurs with only one recipient, then likely a problem on the recipient's end.
Of course you have no viral activity since there are no viruses (by definition of a virus) that currently infect or affects OS X and if this were a virus, it would involve an attachment and all recipients using antivirus software would be reporting a problem with the attachment or attachments. Did you include any attachments with the message?

  • Help w/ IMAP (sent mail lost)

    Hi,
Since switching to IMAP several weeks ago, my Mail app has been very flaky. Some, but not all of my emails never arrive at their destination, and I get no errors either. Also, my 'sent' mail folder sometimes will show mail I've sent, and then it disappears.
From reading on this board, some people mention that the 'sent' mail folder on the server needs to have the same name as the one in Mail.
Well, how do I change that? Mail won't let me change the name of the main 'Sent' folder. Down below on the sidebar, there is another group of folders for each account that has IMAP. There is a 'Sent' folder there too, and I can change the name of it -- but I can't change it to the name that is actually on my server's web mail, which is 'Sent Mail'.
What is going on? Can someone explain to me how this works? I am sick of people never getting my mails and me not knowing it.
    Thanks
    Bob

I have no idea about the Mail not going as thats unlikely to be a Mail issue but more likely a hosting problem. try sending mail to yourself and also look at the Activity and Connection Doctor windows for clues.
As to the Sent Mail location, I don't know about the advice but my IMAP account has two folders - one called Sent and another called Sent Items. I have no idea what determines when it uses them but mail sent from the mail programme sometimes appears in one or the other.
If you can't find any mail, check you haven't got two similar folders.
Strangely, if I send mail, and check on my iPhone, it appears in yet another IMAP folder called sent which mysteriously empties itself into the other two every time the Mail program opens - until then it stays there on the iPhone.
    Go figure ...

  • Need help trouble shooting mail issue

Mail issue started when the compter (imac intel, g4, os 10.6.8) said it needed to restart during a mail download. I restarted, then the mail program would not stop downloading older messages. I went online and followed a whole bunch of suggestions, which only made matters worse (preferences... drag com.mail.plist to desktop, add it back, rebuild mail) nothing worked. I then trashed the mail program, and trashed some of the mail cache (not wanting to lose preferences, I lett this cache). Then mail I could not access mail without the set-up assistant showing on screen. So... (digging a deeper and deeper hole!) I tried to restore mail from my time machine back-up (severl days prior to issue) and it did not help. I then reinstalled applications from snow leopard... not helpful. I then figured I could use migration assistant to copy my working mail program from my mac pro and this did not solve the issues. Of course all of this taking me away from my Christmas shopping:-)
So, I tried to set it up manually, but the program will not save the password and it keeps asking for the password but rejecting it each time.
    Any ideas??

Thanks for your suggestion regarding contacting Apple. I called the Express service and talked for a couple of hours trying to resolve the issues.
One, to deal with the password issue, Keychain Access > Preferences > click on Reset My Default Keychain, close.
For the original issue of mail downloading messesges from my server every time I checked mail,
Library > Mail folder > messagealreadydownloaded3 > drag to trash. Issues resolved!!!
As for creating a pretty good mess... well all I can say is that I was following suggestions from other users that have posted online with similar issue. Lesson learned??? Not sure if there was one:-)

  • Mail 2.1 and Imap Cap/Limit issues?

I have been having an issues with a couple of our executives at our company. We are using company emails and they are configured thru Imap. They currently have around 20GB to 30GB of emails, lots of attachments with mostly just photos and some excel and word docs. The inbox was showing 26GB in the inbox, then one day it kept coming up with an error saying that is was unable to connect to the server. So we split up the inbox into 4 different folders, 2004 Jan - Jun, 2004 Jul - Dec, 2005 Jan - Jun, 2005 Jul - Dec. After we did that everything worked like a charm. I would like to know why this was an issue in the first place, was it our server, was it the mail app. Is there a cap on how many emails mail 2.1 can take, or does it also matter on the length of the email along with attachments. What is the limit Mail 2.1 or maybe this is an associated OS and mail issue? I have no idea, all i know is that when it gets around 30,000 to 35,000 emails regardless of the size of the folder it will come up with an error saying it is having trouble retrieving information, i wanted to recreate the error but by then we had already created these new folders and the problem was fixed. I just wanted to know if there is anyone out there that can share some insight on this issue. Thank you.

Just a quick comment and some extra info...
Most messaging programs have some limits of some kind. Outlook up until 2003 (for PC's) had a *.pst limit of 2GB. From 2003 and newer (2007) the limit has been increased to 20 - 30 GB http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830336 (read one article claiming a theoretical limit of 33TB ). Which means, of course, that even if you switch to WinXP you will have the same problems. For MS Entourage http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842878/en-us the limit is on the number of items in the database storage. 2 million. Not sure if this is only POP3/Exchange or if it also applies to IMAP.
Still if you are getting 35K messages in your inbox, that's very impressive.
Post a reply if you find an email client which can handle more date. Also have you looked into eudora, et al?
    cheers!

  • Odd mail issues, need help

A couple of things I need help with.
    1) Mail constantly goes offline and pops up a dialog box asking for my password. I enter my password in the box and hit okay and it doesn't take. I can hit cancel and put mail back online but that's a pain. What is causing that and how do I fix it?
    2) People send me mail and then about 30 min later I get the same email again. This problem doesn't happen with every email, just some.
I have no mail rules on. and I run virus software and it's fine.
Can someone please help me on this. Thanks!

Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, you may try removing the password entry from the keychain and letting Mail create it again.
Also, in Mail open Help > Mail Help and read the article titled “Mail keeps asking for my keychain password”, in case it applies to you. There is a related article titled “My password is not saved” that you may also want to read, but beware that the last suggestion provided there (deleting the mail account) is wrong and could cause irretrievable data loss if this was a POP account.
Note that Mail doesn’t always correctly report what the problem really is. If Mail can connect to the server but cannot log into your mail account for some reason, it’ll ask for your password, regardless of whether that’s really the problem or not. Don’t keep entering the password every time, because that’s not the problem (click Cancel instead, and take the account back online afterwards).
What’s the time interval chosen in Mail > Preferences > General > Check for New Mail? If it’s set to Every minute, try changing it to Every 5 minutes.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.
BTW, if you’re using Mac OS X 10.3, as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Mac OS X 10.3 & earlier forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.

  • Moving from POP on Eudora to IMAP on Mail - Help!

After much deliberation and perhaps with some regret I am finally moving from Eudora to Mail using IMAP. I have never really used IMAP and have a few queries.
I will be setting up IMAP with my office Groupwise system which archives email after 3 months. I would like to keep all copies of messages on my computer within Mail and within preferences (Accounts > Advanced) and I have set Mail to "Keep copies of messages for offline viewing: All messages and their attachments"
What will happen to messages that I am keeping on Mail when they are archived on my office Groupwise system, will they stay on my computer or disappear??
Has anyone out there made the move from Eudora to Mail, would welcome any comments on your experience.......
I also have a MobileMe account. Does email stay on the Apple servers forever or does archiving occur?
    Thanks in advance
    Tony

    +I am an IMAP newbie....+
IMAP is great if you have a number of devices that you get mail on. In my case, a few computers at the office, one at home, and my iPhone. Because I'm using the IMAP protocol, mail is kept "in sync" on all devices.... Mail that is read on one, is received and marked as read on the others, so you don't have to read the messages again on each device. Likewise, sent mail (and attachments) is also propagated to the Send Mail folder on all devices as well. So mail that I send to someone from the office, shows up in my Sent Mail box at home, including attachments.
Mobile Me uses IMAP as well, so if you have more than one computer, your Mobile Me mail is automatically kept in sync across computers and other devices.
So in your case, it all depends on how the archive procedure is implemented at your office.... if mail is removed from the server and archived, that will automatically remove them from your computer(s) as well. On the other hand, if the messages are just copied and archived, then they will remain on your computer(s).
You can save any mail message on your computer.
    1. under the Mailbox menu, create a new Mailbox. You'll want to save it "On My Mac". Once that is done, it should show up in the left hand pane.
    2. Find the message or messages you want to save, highlight them, and control-click and you can copy them to your new mailbox. Now, the messages have been copied and saved on your computer, so it won't matter what the archive process does to messages on the server, you've got a copy.
Now, you could also just drag messages to your new box, but that will remove them from the server. I would guess that it's not totally possible to delete the emails from the server without them being archived, but again, it's going to depend on how your mail system is set up at work. Bottom line is that IMAP mail clients reflect what is currently on the mail server they access.
+If I need to reclaim space on my MobileMe account, what is the best way of doing this without losing email on Mail?+
Well assuming your reaching the end of your online storage, you could move your Mobile Me mail on your computer to a mailbox that is on your computer. Just be aware that moving mail out of the inbox will delete it from the server. You can copy it to a new mailbox and it will remain on the server, but that obviously won't free up any space on Mobile Me.
And of course, you can dynamically allocate space on Mobile Me between storage and email, so increasing one or the other may solve your problem

  • Not the "run of the mill" receiving mail issue...

I've been having this issue for months - I would say at least 4-6 months. At one point I worked one-on-one with someone from Apple over the phone to try to fix it, but it was still never resolved.
I have our email set up so that on the left-hand side, the view shows the list of folders and then below that, a small "Mail Activity" window. While working on the computer - which is usually anywhere from 10-14 hours per day, I will notice when an email comes in that the Mail Activity window it will say "Incoming Messages 1 of 3" (or however many).
Well, sometimes 3 messages really do come, but other times, only 1 out of the 3 come or other times, none come. The Activity Window will say there are incoming messages, but I will get none.
This would be just a nuisance, except I think discovered I wasn't getting email messages from people - and that seemed to be random, I'd be emailing back and forth with a friend and she'd mention that I "skipped" an email, it would turn out that for some reason I didn't get one, even though I was getting the other ones from her at the time. And it was multiple people, from all different email addresses, etc.
I don't have any other email address other than the @mac.com one we have.
I did notice one day while just looking around (didn't move, delete or alter anything) that the number of email messages in /Users/myname/Library/Mail/Mac-myemail/INBOX.imapmbox/Messages is different than the number of messages actually in my "Inbox" - not sure if it should be the same?? Like right now, I have 1665 emails in my inbox, but in that 'Messages' folder, it has 1917 items.
Oh, and when I was working the Apple person, they did have me rebuild the mailbox several times.
Sorry for the long post, I REALLY appreciate any help anyone can give me???
    Thank you!

Your ".mac" account has been set up to use IMAP for receiving emails. As someone who has been using IMAP with Mail for about 2 years I can tell you from experience that when it says you are receiving "1 of 3" emails, it doesn't mean you are receiving 3 NEW emails. It means that it is updating 3 emails. Sometimes it says receiving "1 of 645".
The truth is, the numbers don't really matter. That also goes for the number of messages in your inbox. Just because the number of messages don't match up doesn't mean the messages have been lost. They are just in other places, they may have been deleted, they could be in the sent folder, they could be in your drafts folder, junk folder, etc.
The tech person you spoke to was correct in what he did. The only numbers that should ever be matching up are the numbers at me.com with the numbers in your inbox. As long as those are the same, you are not losing emails.
However, anything is possible and I urge you to ask your friends to send you 10 or 20 "test emails" to make sure everything is running smoothly. If you are actually missing emails, that is an error beyond your control. That would be a problem on the servers at Apple and you would probably have to call or contact a Mobile Me representative.

  • When I am on my home wifi I can send e-mail.  When I am not on my home e-mail but on a wifi network or using the 3g network I cannot send e-mail.  HELP HOW TO FIX.

When I am on my home wifi I can send e-mail.  When I am not on my home e-mail but on a wifi network or using the 3g network I cannot send e-mail.  HELP HOW TO FIX.

    I know this question is a few years old now, but I recently found myself having the exact same issues;
Using my iphone or ipad at home created no problems at all, but I couldn't send e mails when away from my home network.
I recently switched broadband supplier at home and set up a new e mail address, then my problems began!
I openly admit I'm not great with technology and, to be honest, some of the answers provided on these forums confuse me more than the questions!
    But this worked for me:
I went along the lines that the fault wasn't with my idevice but possibly with the broadband provider (in my case Plusnet) so I contacted their customer support.
    They referred me to the set up process shown below;
From your home screen press Settings.
From the setting menu, choose Mail, Contacts, Calendars followed by Add Account…
From the Add Account… menu choose Other.
Fill in your Full Name, Email Address, Password and Description and press Next.If you need help with these, there's more detail underneath the screenshot.
Full name: Enter your name (or the name you'd like people to see when you send them email)
Email Address: Enter the address you're setting up, this could be a Plusnet address ([email protected]) or a hosted domain address ([email protected])
Password: Enter the password for your email address (I don't know what this is)
Description: Enter a useful description of the email address you're setting up (e.g. Mum's email). You can put whatever you want here
    Press Next to continue.
More settings will appear. Some will already be filled in.Enter the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server details and press Next. If you need help with these, there's more detail underneath the screenshot.
IMAP/POP This will default to IMAP - it's up to you which one you want to use (I don't know what to choose)
    Incoming Mail Server settings
Host Name: For IMAP this is imap.plus.net - for POP, this is mail.plus.net
User Name & Password: Enter the username and password for the email address you're setting up (I don't know what these are)
    Outgoing Mail Server settings
    Host Name: relay.plus.net
User Name & Password: These are optional, but if you want to send mail while on the move (e.g. while connected to mobile or wireless networks), we recommend filling these in.Enter the username and password for the email address you're setting up (I don't know what these are)
    When you're finished, press Next.
If the box shown below appears, press Yes (you may need to do this twice).
After a minute or two, your email address will be set up and ready to use.If you chose IMAP when setting up you’ll be able to choose whether you want to use Notes (if you chose POP you’ll be taken back to the settings screen from step 2). Press Save when you’re done.
That's all you need to do. To start checking your email, go back to your home screen and press Mail.
Now I fully understand that it may be different for each broadband provider but the processes must be similar.
The key appears to be in setting up the outgoing message server settings in step 5. Where it says "optional, but if you want to send mail while on the move (e.g. while connected to mobile or wireless networks), we recommend filling these in.
    http://www.plus.net/support/email/setup/ios-setup.shtml#pagetop
Where it says "we recommend" I think it should read "you must fill these in"
I went back to Settings - Mail,Contacts, Calenders - click on the offending account and click on the account shown.
Under OUTGOING MAIL SERVER click on the server, in my case relay.plus.net, and click again to show the details. make sure you enter your user name and password and after a few seconds the account will verify and show a load of ticks.
I tried this on my phone this morning while on 3G only. I sent an email to another of my addresses and immediately got the response that the message couldn't be sent as the recipient was rejected and the message had been placed in my Outbox. I followed the above steps and immediately heard the satisfying "whoosh" as my mail was sent. 10 seconds later another satisying beep as my e mail arrived at my alternate account.
Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.

  • Mail: Proper way to adjust IMAP/SMTP mail server entries?

Please forgive, but I am still on 10.4 (Tiger) with an iCloud mail account. I believe this is still a widely applicable and helpful question!
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server):
MINE IS STILL:      mail.me.com  (Currently still working fine)
         Advised/required:     imap.mail.me.com
    SMTP (Outgoing mail server):
MINE IS STILL:          smtp.me.com  (Currently still working fine)
         Advised/required:      smtp.mail.me.com
QUESTION 1: To have the server entries set properly, can I simply make textual changes in the Incoming/Outgoing server name fields for my IMAP iCloud mail account (via insert of word "mail" in server names; change is not shown here)...
...or should one DELETE IMAP ACCOUNT (as I have commonly read!) and recreate with all new correct settings? If it is advisable to Delete the account, why wouldn't just making the quick server name adjustments be sufficient?
Also, I need some fears assuaged:
    - "Deleting an IMAP mail account" in Mail has no risk/danger of losing/deleting all of your Sent and Received Inbox/Sentbox contents, correct? When you recreate an Account, all of your mail held on server is still fully safe and accessible, yes?
    ISSUE TWO:
I like to use both my "me.com" and "mac.com" email addresses.
Under "Edit (Outgoing) Server List," I still have a secondary older entry "smtp.mac.com" listed.
QUESTION 2: Is the following statement of my understanding accurate?
"Deletion of the smtp.mac.com outgoing server is completely acceptable and would not prohibit sending of email under mac.com email address because the "mac.com" email address is an alias for the me.com address and ALL mail (whether sent with mac.com or me.com email address) goes out through the ME.COM server."
Is that correct. If not, kindly advise!
    I really appreciate the help.
I am not a beginning Mac user and find that the complete configuration intricacies of Apple Mail (I know that's the old name) are one thing that users are never really guided to master and comprehend.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Bill from Maryland

These are the settings recomended by Apple.

  • MBA lion Mail issue: window disappears randomly

    hello:
Having some MBA 13' mail issues:
    1) mail window will disappear (only using cmd+0 shortcut will bring it back - or going to window>message viewer) randomly without any reason
    2) starting up a new email or new note then closing this note or email will close the entire message viewer window...why?
    3) emails deleted within the 'inbox' section will not delete in the Gmail section (setup as IMAP, with Gmail defaults)
I am a little concerned with 1 & 2 becuase these are huge user experience issues, it is the most frustrating thing to have to continually use the short cut to open up a window which should not have disappeared in the first place!!
any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

    Hi Fred
I've got the same issue. It seems to happen randomly but so annoying when it does. Upgrading to Mountain Lion hasn't helped and I've changed my keyboard and reset all the short-cuts to the default settings and still it happens in Mail and Microsoft Outlook for Mac when I'm typing a mail.
    Did you find a solution?

  • Having Some Mail issues on Apple Mail 5.2

Hi All - Having some mail issues lately with my gmail account Imap set up.
I can receive mail but when trying to send mail it pops up with the follwoing:
"Can not send message using the server smtp.gmail.com"
I tried deleting the gmail account on my iMac and setting it up again.  in the set up  It gives me two choices as an outgoing server:
smtp.gmail.com and just Gmail.   If I choose Gmail I can send the messages, but is this secure?  I've always used smtp.gmail.com for outgoing without any problems.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mark

Thanks for responding BGreg - Yes everything looks OK under the advanced tab (see below)  I never had any
"Red Dots" in connection doctor on the old smtp.gmail.com but it wouldn't work.  The new outgoing server - labeled merely Gmail works and appears to be the same as smtp.gmail.com, but I've never seen this in the past - it's always been called smtp.gmail.com   I wonder if Google changed the name?
