Imap email+autoretrieval hangs Messaging over time

First, thanks to the NSU team for making the device mostly enjoyable; 3.x was a big improvement from an email perspective.
Here's a serious and repeatable bug with imap:
* Set up imap account,
* Turn on auto-retrieve,
* Show new mails on Standby screen,
* Wait.
Messaging will lock up. You can't exit it, it doesn't function, and the icons turn into question marks with circles around them. A reboot of the device is required.
This seems linked to the number of auto-retrievals - if you set auto-retrieve to 5 minutes, this happens within a day. Set it to 15 minutes, and it happens in 2-3 days.
I've been able to repeat this bug on my friend's E61, too, so it isn't something peculiar to my setup.
Is there a way to do something like a "kill -9" on the E61? Is there a better way to file bugs like this?
Thanks.

No, just turn off Email Account syncing. Note that the function _does not_ sync the actual emails, it merely syncs the settings for the account (username, password, servers, ports, etc.). If you sync email (settings) at all, you only need to do it once unless you change your account.

I'm having the same issue, but slightly different - since upgrading to Mountain Lion the Inbox folder doesn't come across.  If I right-click on the account and select "Get Account Info", the 'Inbox' folder does not appear in the Mailbox list.  I've got a support email into GoDaddy but haven't heard from them yet.

  • Crazed email sending old messages over... and over

Help. Mail is resending messages every time it is reopened. This is tiresome, and is causing confusion with my contacts, some of which are business related.
I've done a safeboot, utilities, and have resorted to using the mac mail on the website to that on my desktop, which is a significantly inferior option.

There is a kind of index corruption that causes messages to randomly appear in a mailbox different from where they’re supposed to be. If that mailbox happens to be the Outbox, Mail thinks they’re waiting to be sent and dutifully proceeds to try to send them.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Why does my email keep downloading messages every time I read an email ? It shows in the bottom left corner on my computer. I have a PC

  • IMAP email not appearing in Mail

Background: I have an IMAP email account that's over a decade old.  It's going away soon so I'm trying to figure out how to get a complete local copy of all that email.  There are a total of around 100 folders with anywhere from 5 to over 2000 emails in each folder.
The problem: there's email on the server that isn't showing up in Mail.  For instance one folder (according to the webmail interface) has 771 messages.  Mail says that folder has 700 messages.  Looking at the webmail interface I can easily find several of the 71 emails that are not appearing in Mail.  In Mail, if I select the folder and "Get Account Info" and look at the Quotas section, it lists the correct number of email messages (771).  If I rebuild the folder, as it's being rebuilt the blue progress bar at the bottom left of Mail says there are 771 incoming messages.  But when it's done, I can only see 700.
I just double checked on a second computer (MacBook Pro, also latest 10.7 version & Mail) and it's the same there, it only sees 700 messages.
Now, repeat this times the roughly 100 folders . . .
What's going on here?  Why isn't Mail downloading or displaying these emails?

I just looked in the User/Library/Mail/V2 folder, and tracked down this folder.  Digging down several levels into the files for this account and folder I found two sub-folders called "Messages" which contained a total of 774 (mostly) .emlx files.  In three cases there were a pair of files with the same number, one with an .emlxpart extension and the other with a partial.emlx extension -- if I assume that pair corresponds to the same email, this it appears there are 771 messages on local disk.  And Mail refuses to display 71 of them?
I'm doing a backup with MailSteward to see what it makes of these files.

  • Understanding GoDaddy IMAP Email vs POP

I have been using POP email with GoDaddy for several years with no issues. Recently, while speaking with a GoDaddy rep, they talked me in to switching over everything to the GoDaddy cPanel which uses IMAP vs POP. For whatever reason I cannot get my head around IMAP?
I am attaching a screenshot of what my MAIL screen looks like after setting up the IMAP account.
I am lost as to how this has reorganized things.
I was told to backup all my archived emails to a new mailbox folder (that is the "ARCHIVED MAIL" folder under "ON MY MAC" and it contains thousands of my received messages from clients over the years broken down in to sub folders).
Here is what is confusing me...
    (1) Why do I have a "Sent" folder on the left that has a sub-entry titled "Choreo - GoDaddy IMAP"  AND I also have a "Sent" folder showing up under a new category (since setting up the cPanel/IMAP account) named "CHOREO - GODADDY IMAP"? I also have two "Drafts" folders and two "trash" folders now on the left side???
    (2) From what I have been told, IMAP keeps a copy of all emails online on the server. Does that apply to ALL MESSAGES that I SEND and RECEIVE over time? I guess I maybe can just copy my incoming messages to various "ON MY MAC" folders to copy them to my hard drive just like with POP (right?), but what about "Sent" messages through IMAP? Is there a way for me to keep a copy of ALL MY SENT MESSAGES over time?
    Thanks for any help!

  • How do you set the time period on IMAP email accounts (razr maxx)

    Hi Guys -
Does anyone know how you can set the time period that the stock email will keep the already downloaded messages for IMAP email accounts?
Mine never seems to show more than a couple of days worth at a time. I'd ideally like to be able to see at least 2 weeks worth of messages without needing to download them again!
On other phones I've had there was a setting in the menu, but either I can't find it...or it's not there. I've found the setting for how OFTEN it checks the accounts, but not the setting I am seeking.
    Your help is appreciated!
Best Wishes for the Holiday Season.

Hey Rich.  Once in 'settings,' there should be a "days to sync' under the 'data usage' section.   You don't have that?

  • My mail on iMac is not working properly. Click on email, it hangs, showing previous email. Takes forever to load. "No message selected" showing in a blank screen

My mail is not working properly: when I click on an email it hangs, frequently showing the previous email, often for up to a minute. Or it shows "loading" and just sits there showing nothing. OR there is a blank screen saying "no message selected". It's slow to load, and I'm not happy. Recently switched from Windows PC, not impressed so far. Very frustrating.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received. (I upgraded to Mountain LIon, and don't think I had problems before I did so, though I hadn't had the computer for long.)

    Hi Sarah,
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

    Certainly!
This is the module in our eMac 1.42:
    1GB PC2700 DDR 333MHz CAS 2.5 184 Pin DIMM
The vendor, Other World Computing, ships to the UK but I suspect the shipping would make it pricy. I also trust this vendor:
    Apple G4 eMac 1.42GHz (184 Pin PC2700 DDR DIMMs)
Between the two vendor's description, you should have a good idea of the Specs
PPC Macs do not like hi-density PC RAM. That's why I linked these two; they send the right stuff to Mac users.
Crucial UK is usually cited as good but, like their US counterpart, seldom go against Apple's outdated specs. See:
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=eMac%20(1.42GHz)&Cat=RAM
They show the max RAM for your model as 1GB--yesterday's news. However, if you order their offering for a G5 iMac, you get the larger modules. Here is a listing for a 2GB kit (2 x 1GB modules) of the right config:
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=iMac%20(G5-1.8GHz%2C%2020-i nch)&Cat=RAM

  • Sending the same email message several times to contacts.  Turned off iCloud, but still sending message.

Sending the same email message several times to contacts.  Turned off iCloud, but still sending message.
A user had synced all of his contacts from his computer and iPhone to his iCloud.  Today, his iCloud sent out the same message 20 times to all recipients.  We were able to transfer all calendar items and contacts back to his pc and then disable iCloud.  However, it still sent out the messages.  Any ideas?

It's a carrier issue. I have AT&T and had this issue with my friend (who had an Android) and my mother (who had a feature phone). Both of them have Verizon for service and I'm thinking the issue was on Verizon's end. They both just dealt with it as we tried all sorts of things to get this sorted out (other than contacting Verizon directly) and had no luck.
They've both switched to iPhones so it's a moot point for us now, at least.

  • Native email sends message multiple times

Since I have updated to the new OS, the email app is now sending messages multiple times. When I initially send it, it appears to be unsuccessful, as it is in the Inbox with a red X. But the message is sent. The app keeps trying to send the "unsuccessful" message, and the recipient ends up receiving the same message more than once. Anyone else having this problem, or have an answer?

This issue has not yet been resolved in the below thread either.

I would give rim a call to let them know of your problems.
If they can't track it they won't know how many users this is affecting. I imagine it will get solved a lot quicker if they know just how many users it's affecting.
    Good luck

  • I deleted a pop email account from mail.  How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?

I deleted a pop email account from mail.  How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?

    Thomas,
"Note that you were warned that this would happen and approved it.  When you delete an e-mail account in Mail, you are shown a message like the following:"
You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account.  I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN!  It just deletes it - which *** for me.  Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.)  I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem.  Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those.  Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often.  ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL!  ;-)
