IMessage taking the fun out of texting!

Hi, I'm a first time Apple user and I've come to find that I miss the simplicity of sending a simple text using Android. My issue...The problem occurs when I try to a text message to another iPhone user. It sends the text as an iMessage, which is fine, except when I'm away from a wi-fi connection. After I hit send, the status bar goes to 75% and stops, then I have to tap and hold the text until 'send as SMS' pops up. This is extremely annoying and sometimes I forget, so my message sits in limbo. Am I doing something wrong?

I like my iphone for other reason, so dont want to change. (idea doesnt help.)
i see i'm not alone with the problem : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404464?start=0&tstart=0

• ICal won't stop taking the times out of my event names

I make my calendar events as follows: "10:00 doctor appt"
This makes it so I can see the time at a glance and means that I didn't forget to put a time. I also like feeling entirely in control of my calendar.
However, iCal keeps taking the time out and adding it to the state of the event, which I don't like. I don't mind it changing the state as long as it leaves the time in the text. I've tried to find a way to turn off this functionality, but I can't find a checkbox for it. I've been having to manually fix the text on each event once or twice before the time will stay, which is extremely annoying. Is there any way to get the text to stay that I've missed? If not, can Apple please include a fix for this in their next update? Thanks.

Betafly,
Generally speaking, I enter my events in the "Month" view.
Try entering the event by typing "doctor appt at 10:00" This is what is displayed when I use that entry method:
If the "Month" view window is too small the time will not display, so make sure that the window is large enough to display the time.
Also, open Calendar Help and look for "Add events to calendars." That will help explain various text entry techniques.

• When i try to play music on my blackberry curve it says "media is busy" i dont know what that means......how do i fix it without taking the battery out???

Help please
Solved!
Go to Solution.

"Media Busy" Maybe, maybe ur player innitializing the selected track ready to play it. Does it hang on Media busy for a long time?
Strange behaviour like this can be corrected with a reboot. Take battery out whilst your device is still switch ON. Wait 20 seconds or so, then re-inster your battery. Wait throught the reboot (about 5 mins). See if that helps. If not, sorry, cant help any further. A reboot fixes a lot of issues.

• Decreasing contrast: taking the bright out of white background

I recently got a new app called Maple 12 whose window background is bright white, and there are no options for changing its color. Some other native Mac apps, such as Finder, have the same thing, also without apparent provision for modification. Since the nature of Maple (a computer algebra system) is such that one generally spends a lot of time concentrating on the window contents, I find that the high-contrast stark white begins to hurt my eyes after half an hour or so, making it hard to distinguish the foreground text. My age (69) probably aggravates this.
In almost all the other apps I use I've been able to arrange the background to be something less contrasty, such as a light gray, or at least a soft white instead of the bright white. I asked Maplesoft Support about changing this, but they informed me that Maple's background is controlled by the OS, presumably using the same default that Finder uses.
Nothing I've tried so far has helped. There are ways to increase contrast (the opposite of what I need), of getting a negative of everything, and of modifying the profile of all colors and shades in between the extremes of pure black and pure white. But those extremes always remain unaffected. Since OS X is Unix based it seems likely to me that there might be some way to modify this, possibly by a command-line Unix command, if only I knew the correct incantation.
Does anyone here have any suggestions about how I might be able to make the background more tolerable? I wouldn't mind if every instance of bright white were changed to soft white.

Thanks much for this helpful comment. It did indeed let me change the TextEdit background - and I suspect the same approach will work with some other apps as well.
Unfortunately, Maple isn't one of them. I went thru all the Maple menu tabs and options, and while there are many for modifying the text - its color, size, etc. - there are none whatever for affecting the background. So it seems as tho it is Maple that is simply lacking a capability that can be built in (how easily, I don't know).
In eComStation (the current incarnation of OS/2 Warp) one can often simply bring up the color pallette, pick a color, and drag it to another app's window to set the background. That doesn't seem to be possible on OS X, even tho it obviously has the machinery for it.
I want to suggest to Maplesoft to add the background choice capability, but that would probably be better received if I can suggest to them how to accomplish it. Since I'm not a developer and know nothing about OS X's internals, I'm unable to do that. If anyone has any ideas on this score, or can point me to relevant information, I would much appreciate it.

• How to reboot a blackberry without taking the battery out

For those Otter box fans and other cases users. Here's how you can reboot your Blackberry that keeps freezing and doing strange stuff without tearing it appppart.
Press all together and in that order
ALT + RIGHT-SHIFT + DEL (takes few seconds on the Q10 to reboot)
Enjoy

Small correction for the Q10, when you keep those 3 keys down for a while, the Q10 shuts down but doesn't restart by itself.
You need to turn it back on with the top button.
All other BBs will flash the red light and restart.

When I send a text, it goes through as a "text message" instead of an "imessage" and the person I am texting has an iPhone. what could be the cause of this problem?

It's not enough for the other person to just have an iPhone. They must be on iOS 5, have iMessage enabled and connected to the Internet.

• IOS 7 and the 'greyed out' WiFi problem

Hi,
Looking for any solutions to this:
I upgraded to iOS 7 with no problems initially
After about 24-36 hrs I noticed I could no longer access websites via the WiFi connection, so I restarted the phone (a 4S on the Bell Canada network).
Since then, the WiFi slider has been greyed out and I can't access WiFi networks - with the exception of about an hour or two coincidentally around the time of the 7.0.2 release.
The WiFi button on the control centre appears to work, but of course doesn't actually function as designed.
So far I've tried the following:
Power on & off
Reset the phone (home & power buttons until Apple logo shows)
Reset network settings
Various versions of having the phone in or not-in airplane mode while doing the above
Renaming the phone without appostrophies.
Reinstalling iTunes & re sync
Upgrading to 7.0.2
Completely wiping the phone and reinstalling everything from iTunes (painful, I know)
Going into the store that sold me the phone (I won't say here, but they weren't very nice about Apple)
None of the above have worked.
Some reading suggests it could be the phone's chipset, but I'd argue that as it's connected to WiFi just fine a couple if times.
The only idea I've read and not yet got round to trying involves freezing the handset.
Anyone else with any other ideas?
Thanks!

Tony,
I've been reading up on this 4S wifi greyed out topic for the past several days too. I have a 5 and I don't have the wifi greyed out problem (knock on wood).
There's been quite a huge volume of discussion on this issue, with some people suggesting that there is a hardware defect, while others finding it just too coincidental that so many people would have this same problem on the same occassion, ie upgrade to iOS7 or 7.0.1 or 7.0.2.
The strangest thing about this: there's a user, carolinelewis, who is on her second new replacement 4S from Apple but they still show wifi greyed out after a while!
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4638071?start=300&tstart=0
(page 21 of the thread).
Some people swear by the freezer method, some say the hot dryer method worked for them. Some say using either methods would get it fixed, some say the problem returns after some days.
My thoughts is that both freezer and hot dryer methods are actually taking the phone out of its operational temperature range.
Environmental requirements of 4S:
Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
This action may have cause the 4S to do a complete initialization when returned to normal temperature, but these 2 methods appear to be last ditch efforts.
What I'd favor is power cycling the 4S, which can be achieved by running it completely out of battery, as shown in this Youtube video: http://youtu.be/o_ws5srnVVM
then plug in power and just may work for you.
I've also come across this person's workaround: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzb5LNB9nIA
which may work for the 4S on iOS7 (it was posted for iOS6).
The steps this gentleman proposed appears to be worth a try. His strategy is to put the iphone into airplane mode, then do a hard reset.
Now, I have had my Thinkpad (Windows7) laptop's wifi freeze up akin to the behavior of 4S on iOS, ie can't turn on wifi radio via software, just simply refuses to see SSID of wifi router, won't join, etc. I've always been able to get things back to normal by power cycling the laptop. In some freak instances, even shutdown won't work, I would pull the battery out of the laptop to get eveything back to normal.
So my thoughts on this 4S wifi button grey out is that there is something in the iOS7 upgrade process that caused the wifi circuitry to freeze up and need a complete restart from powered down state.
The fact that the iphone doesn't have an easily removed battery makes it harder, and I suspect the freezer and dryer technics are an indirect way of acheiving total power off (battery not supplying power due to extreme high or low temperatures).
Furthermore, I've read that some people fixed their wifi greyed out problem by deleting older apps that may not be fully compatible with iOS7 and thus locking it up. Well, if that were true, then it may explain why the problem returns for some people. We won't know who upgraded which app.
And of course, there are instances where the wifi hardware that happen to be in a marginal state. Kind of like a PC working fine, installing updates, then stalling on reboot because the boot sector failed or some driver got stuck during initialization stage. This may explain why for some people the 4S had been working just fine but got broken wifi after the upgrade.
Best of luck to you in your efforts to get this problem fixed.

• Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get? Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).

Apple is great!
Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get? Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).
I compose an iMessage with the destination as my email address and I attach 2 photos I want on my PC. I send them several times from my iPhone 5C but they never arrive. I look at my ipad later and realize that it's iMessage app is getting ( and swallowing) these emails. I then turn the ipad off. Still can't get the photos through because iphone is now getting them on it's iMessage. I turn off the iMessage feature and try to send photos from text msging. Phone tells me it can't send photos unless iMessage it turned on. What happened to regular MMS text messaging? I go and try to send photos as an email attachment and see that there is no option to attach from the stupid email program. I look up online to learn about the brave new world of apple attachments and send them.
Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get?
The email program on my iphone is not configured to remove messages from the server.
If iMessage is turned off I don't have the issue.
Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).

Did not work. I've selected iMessage to ON and left it. After a few hours I recieved a message "activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again". This has been going on for the past 3 days.

• In a group I can receive iMessages, but only respond as a text. How can I fix this without deleting the thread?

I had been sending group imessages in a thread earlier in the day on my iPhone 5 and later when I got my iPhone 6 I received an iMessage in the thread and sent an iMessage back, but when the other person responded it showed up as received from unknown. Once that happened I can still receive iMessages from the other two people in the thread, but I can only send a text back. If I send an iMessage individually to each person everything is fine and as it's always been. It's just the when I send a message in the group. I've tried signing out of iMessage and turning off iMessage and restarting my iPhone. Nothing seems to work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey kenth93939!
Here is an article for you about group messages that has some helpful information and troubleshooting tips for this issue:
iOS: Understanding group messaging
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5760
The Group Messaging setting applies only to MMS messages.
Your wireless carrier may restrict the maximum number of recipients allowed in a group message with MMS.
Disabling Group Messaging has no effect on iMessage behavior. Responses to group iMessages are always sent to all recipients.
Group messaging with MMS requires an appropriate plan from your carrier for use on iPhone.
Carrier messaging rates may apply when using group messaging with MMS.
Additional Information
It is not possible to remove yourself from a group message.
To add or remove recipients, you must create a new group message conversation.
If you experience an issue with iMessage, SMS, or MMS messaging, try the steps outlined in this article.
