IMovie 08 quits shortly after starting IMovie 08

New mac owner here.
Purchased a standard macbook 6 months ago. From the purchase date I successfully used the IMovie version that came with the mac. Last week I decided to upgrade to ILife08 and therefore IMovie 08. Since then IMovie 08 shuts down after just a few minutes of running. I ran repair permissions and also ran each of my projects to see if it was related to one specific project and came up with nothing. I have also installed any updates related to IMovie, ILife, or the Mac HD.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

The first thing I'd do would be delete the iDVD preference file.
To delete iDVD's preference file: First quit iDVD; then look in Home/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag the plist file to the trash, then reopen iDVD. iDVD will create a new plist file.

When I started my iMac today, it started beeping like an alarm horn.  I shut it down, and held the startup button a little longer to get it to start.  Shortly after starting up, a dark 'film' slowly comes down over the screen and I get a message saying I have to shut down the computer.  I've tried to start from the disk, and before I can even run a repair off utilities, it happens again.  What's up?  Am I screwed?  HELP!!

What you are seeing is a kernel panic, often but not always connected with a hardware or peripheral issue, so, unplug everything except mouse and  keyboard, reboot and hold the shift key as soon as your hear the chime, continue holding it until you see the Apple Icon and spinning progress indicator, then post back.
It will take noticeably longer than normal to start.

Will I lose my emails I have on there? I have numerous client email files and can't afford to lose any of them. I do have everything backed up but I'm fearful of losing important client info. What if something happened during the back up and it doesn't have my files?

Shortly after starting Firefox the "music" reminiscent of Pac-Man starts. It is only on Firefox (haven't tried Thunderbird) even following an uninstall and re-install of Firefox. Just started today. Am using XP Home SP3.

    Dear Firefox:
I am not amused with the pac-man music. I spent the entire trying to find a virus on my computer. I might have tolerated this as an April Fool's joke, but this "celebration" was completely unnecessary!
And to others trying to fix the problem ... I just uninstalled Cool Previews and that did the trick. No more bat-shit-crazy pac-man music.

After updating itunes three (3) days ago - itunes close shortly after starting with the message "a problem occured and cannot be solved, please close application" - Platform: WIN7 - iTunes 11.2.9.115

Start with the third box in  Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
If that doesn't work, use the steps in the second box to repair your iTunes installation. Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Backup Freezes shortly after start

I've a recurring problem with Time Machine, whereby the backup appears to freeze shortly after starting. No error message is reported and I can see nothing in the log.
At first it seemed to be caused by my children's log-in still being active but it's not that. It does seem to happen more when my wife has left lots of applications open, including MS Word with lots of documents.
I've checked the external disk (Lacie 500GB), even erased and reformatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled), same as by iMac hard disk) but to no avail. Stopping the back-up does nothing. Pulling the cable or turning the disk off whilst kills the current back-up doesn't cure the problem.
The only solution is to restart and run a back-up straight away.
    Any ideas?

Unfortunately, a lot of things can cause this.
Let's take a look at the log: there may be a clue. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to one of these stalled backups, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

That sort of thing might slow it down a bit, but shouldn't be much.
I've checked the external disk (Lacie 500GB), even erased and reformatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled), same as by iMac hard disk) but to no avail.
Also check the *Partition Map Scheme* shown by Disk Utility on the first line of the drive (the one with the make and size). It should be GUID for an Intel Mac, +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac.
Is your LaCie Firewire or USB? How is it connected?
Does it have it's own power supply, or does it get power from your Mac?
Are you running FileVault, any virtualization software, or any significant non-Apple software?
How much data is on your internal HD?
That info plus the logs should at least get us started.

  • Acrobat Pro 8 quits unexpectedly shortly after starting

I've used Acrobat Professional 8.3.1 for a number of years with no problems. Recently, though, it has begun quitting unexpectedly about 10 seconds or so after starting.
The following information may or may not be relevant. Other Adobe products I'm running are CS6 Lightroom and Photoshop. CS6 and Acrobat Pro 8 coexisted without conflict for several months. But I recently experienced a problem with Photoshop CC not updating properly and had to remove and reinstall the program. The Acrobat problem existed before I removed and reinstalled the program, but the fact that Photoshop CC woudn't update properly might or might not be related to the Acrobat problem..
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can try a repair of Acrobat from the Control Panel (Add/Remove programs). That may resolve the issue. If not, you likely have a registration problem related to the PhotoShop in CC. In that case, you might want to check the CC forum about activation issues such as yours. The installation and activation of Acrobat as part of CC is a bit different and may need input from the CC folks.

  • ITunes 10.5.3 freezes shortly after start-up (culprit= iTunes match?)

    Hi,
I'm running an early 2011 macbook pro (OS X 10.7.2, 2.3GHz quad core i7, 8GB RAM). iTunes has started freezing up and becoming non-responsive shortly after opening. It takes between 30 seconds and ~5 minutes, irrespective of what I'm doing in iTunes.
I think this may have started after purchasing an iTunes match subscription, but I'm not entirely sure the two are linked. If I stop the iTunes match process, iTunes will still freeze up.
Is anybody else experiencing this problem? I've seen a few unanswered posts similar to this.
When will 10.5.4 be released, and will it solve this issue? Is there an easy way to return to an earlier version of iTunes without having to add everything to my library all over again, and do any earlier versions have iTunes match support?
It would be really nice to be able to actually use iTunes again.
EDIT: if I'm playing music through iTunes when it freezes up, it will continue playing until the end of the track. The next track doesn't play though.
    Thanks,
    Dylan

    CindyCoult wrote:
It's possible. The technician also indicated to me that 10.5.3 was the most recent version of iTunes. Could just be that the version you upgraded to is extremely buggy still.
Yes, lots of complaints and issues with 10.7.3 which may have brought this about on my early 2009 Mac Pro  which on it I have my system that has gone through an earlier mac pro, maccbook pro and iMac over past few years with out needing to do a clean install and then go back and update from time machine.  My 13 inch macbook air does not have problems but I do a lot less with it and do not use the itunes on it to sync my iOS devices which gave me the most problems on 10.5.3.
I have done the deed (remotely) and itunes seems ok and stable, but now we will see how syncing goes with my two ipads, and iphone.  Testing over next 24 hours will tell the tail. If this works then I will sit back a bit and see what the issues are with the 10.7.3 OS upgrade before reapplying on my Mac Pro.
Thanks for info, this may be what I have been waiting for.

  • MSI GT70 2PC shut down shortly after start

I bought MSI GT70 2PC-1889CZ Dominator. BIOS E1763IMS.51B, the same problem with BIOS E1763IMS.51V. There is one SSD disk there and one HDD.
And problem? When I press the power button, my NB automatically turns off during 2-3 sec (before starting windows 8). But when I press the power button again, it starts without problem. I have the same problem everytime. First try - turn off, second try - no problem. My nb never turns off during playing games, or working in windows, only shortly after I press power button. I tried other battery (the same model), this problem occurs without plugged charger and with plugged charger too...

    Try update IRST driver.

  • Adobe Acrobat DC hangs shortly after start

    Hi,
After starting Adobe Acrobat DC in Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64Bit, after 1 or 2 seconds, the application does not respond anymore. I can only terminate the application. Anyone else experiencing this behaviour?
    Thanks.
    With regards,
    Reza Stephan Amiri

Something very interesting happened in my case:
As sukridt15 had mentioned, I ran the Repair option. It didn't really have any impact. I had exactly the same behaviour as JoninJacksonville, only perhaps the hang duration was not as long anymore.
At some other time I started Photoshop CC 2014. At the beginning it was also not very responsive, (before upgrading to Adobe Acrobat DC I never had any problems with Photoshop), choosing any option took several seconds. I then tried to print a picture, as mentioned it also took several seconds to load the dialog box for printing but once it was there, I was able to print without any issues and Photoshop started to become responsive in a normal manner again. Interestingly enough from that time I also didn't have any problems with Adobe Acrobat DC. I can't tell you how this is related but that's how the problem was resolved.
I also get the following error in the event log:
    Source: SideBySide
    Event ID: 78
    Description:
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "" on line . A component version required by the application conflicts with another component version already active. Conflicting components are:. Component 1: C:\windows\WinSxS\manifests\amd64_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0. 9600.17415_none_6240486fecbd8abb.manifest.
    Component 2: C:\windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.96 00.17415_none_a9ed7f470139b3c1.manifest
I'm not sure whether the unresponsiveness has something to do with this but I'm sure that this error in the event log should not necessarily be there.
    Again, I'm using Core i7, 64Bit, 32GB RAM, Windows 8.1 Enterprise Version.
BTW, when I installed Adobe Acrobat DC on a Surface Pro 3 which has Windows 8.1 Professional installed, there weren't any problems. I haven't checked the event log to see whether the error is there as well.

  • Adobe Flash Player Quits Buffering Shortly After Starting to Play

    Hello,
I am having trouble with Adobe Flash Player v. 16.0.0.305 not playing through videos.  It buffers and plays for a short bit then stops.  On Chrome it stops 1:09 into the video and then stops; and then it looks like it continues to buffer.  On Firefox it just stops at 0:56; and does not look like it is buffering.  On Internet Explorer  it stops at 5:08 into the video and then just stops; and then does not look like it is buffering.  This is the same video tried on the three browsers mentioned above.  I am using Windows 7 on an I-3 Intel Processor with 8 GB of RAM and about 250 Gb of disk space on the C Drive.
I have been through all of what is suggested on this page:  Flash Player games, video, or audio don't work | Windows
I am totally stumped.  When I try to download the video; it only downloads partially as well; but it does play the short clip that is downloaded.
I have been trying to figure this out for a couple of months now.
Does anyone have any insight as to what might be happening?  I appreciate it the help very much.
    Regards,
    Dave

To anyone experiencing this problem after trying the steps I posted above, try this potential solution:
    # Open Tools->Add-Ons->Plugins, find Shockwave Flash, and press Disable
    # Hold down the '''Windows logo key''' and press '''R''' to bring up the ''Run'' dialog.
    # Type '''%APPDATA%''' and press OK.
    # Open the Adobe folder
    # Right click on the Flash Player folder and press '''Rename'''. Type in ''Old Flash Player'' as the new name.
    # Go back to the Application Data or AppData folder. (On Windows XP, click '''Up''' in the toolbar. On Windows 7 or Vista, click AppData in the address bar)
    # Open the Macromedia folder and repeat step #5
    # Go back to the add-ons window from step #1, and press Enable on Shockwave Flash
    # Try Farmville, Youtube, and other affected sites to see if the problem is fixed.

  • HELP: Illustrator quits suddenly after start up (CS2)

I just got a new computer and I'm trying to get Illustrator and the rest of the CS2 suite installed. I uninstalled CS2 off of my old computer to free the license, that went fine. Installation on my new computer went smoothly. However, when I try to start Illustrator it quits out with no error message after it finishes loading the start up info.
I've been getting problems with the rest of my CS2 suite also. Photoshop gives me an error saying my user name, organization, or serial number is invalid. Before it will start, InDesign wants me to 'personalize my software' and type in my serial number, which it then tells me is invalid.
It sounds like my license is still being read as in use by my old computer, but it should have been cleared. What do I do?
    My system -

    Windows XP x64

It comes up fine and i use for a few days. now i bring up Illustrator and at the software startup screen it says 27 days remaining of trial and i select activate later button and now it doesn't come up it just quits with no error messages. can anyone provide some help? I tried uninstalling and downloading again and new install, but same problem. fYI...I have Photoshop cS3 and dreamweaver trial versions and no problems

  • Connections to Exchange CAS Array from UAG start failing shortly after start up

We are publishing Exchange 2010 services via UAG 2010.
After a short period where connectivity works as expected, clients start failing to connect and IIS fails on the UAG with the UAG Web Monitor failing to load and the system event logs showing WAS Event 5010 "A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool'
failed to respond to ping." with the process id corresponding to the w3wp.exe process
The IIS logs show HTTP error 503 - QueueFull and netstat shows no connections from the UAG to the CAS array servers.  Increasing the IIS queue length has made no difference.  According to our external firewall logs connections are still being received
but they're not getting past the UAG.
TMG firewall shows no dropped connections relating to the CAS addresses.
    Any suggestions?

Microsoft support resolved it for us.
There were a number of layered issues that because apparent as we solved each one.
Firstly our UAGs coudln't reach DCs for all domains in our forest.  In our case we'd only got routes and local IP ranges set for our own domain as we didn't expect the UAG to need to talk to any other domains in the forest.  Once we added the routes
from our DMZ and the relevant internal IP address ranges to the UAG config LSASS calmed right down.
You can test this with 'nltest /DSGETDC:FQDNofADDomain /FORCE'
We then also had to change the Base DN from DC=us,DC=parent,DC=root to DC=parent,DC=root in the UAG portal Authentication settings as the UAG accesses DC=Other,DC=parent,DC=root by ADSI if it has to change from DC=us rather than LDAP if it just works down the
tree.  ADSI is apprently much worse for thread locking and performance.
The final piece of the puzzle for us was that we had a separate Exchange deployment in the other sub-domain which didn't have Outlook Anywhere turned on.  Their clients were still trying to use it, hit out UAGs as they got the address from autodiscover
and when they got through our UAGs to the CAS servers the CASs tried to proxy this to the right CAS servers in their domain.  Thier CAS servers dropped the connections as they didn't have it turned on, but the sessions stayed active on our UAGs and eventually
brought the whole thing crashing down.
The quick and dirty fix was to block the main addresses the clients were coming in via on the TMG firewall component.  The administrators in the other sub-domain subsequently turned on Outlook Anywhere on their CAS servers and we stopped seeing the connections.

  • Unable to right click shortly after start-up on Macbook Pro running 10.7.5

Hi. Earlier today I was using a Logitech wireless mouse, and suddenly I couldn't right click anymore. I was playing League of Legends and left the game and I still couldn't right click, neither with my Logitech mouse, or even the trackpad. I restarted the computer and when I logged in I was able to right click for a few seconds, then I lost the ability again. I am still able to use control + left click to access the right click functions, but am not sure what could have caused this problem.
I looked around and found old forum advice from as recent as a year ago, back to 2008. Those forums suggested I install a third party software, USB Overdrive, to search for certain files, which I have, or to delete particular ones, like AppleHIDMouse.kext, or com.apple.finder.plst. I turned off and on the double tap right-click function for the trackpad, and I tried at least three different mice, which work on other devices.
The only thing I can think to do is try to upgrade to Mavericks and see if that will have in it what I need to right click. Considering that I can right click until soon after rebooting, my best guess is that some application or process is running or stopping at start-up and causing my issue.

Very strange problem (no surprise to you).
I suggest you reset the SMC (and PRAM, if you are able). That cannot hurt and might help.
    Barry
