IMovie '09 Unable to import to network home - need real solution

We have a small educational network of just over 40 macs (20 of which are MacBooks, 20 iMacs) and 1 Xserve. Since the update to iMovie '09 no network users are able to make use of iMovie due to the "Can't Create Event" error (no permissions to write to /iMovie Events.localized) which is well documented.
The one solution I can find is well documented and quite easy to accomplish with ARD, but it involves creating a local folder on the root of each machine's hard drive to store iMovie events! This is unfortunately completely useless to us. The entire point of having network home folders in the first place is so that any student or staff member can work on any system.
Does anyone have a solution which actually works in this situation?

The tip form the above article is to do the following in Terminal
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool true
I am not sure if the other responders have tried it yet. I do have my own tip. The problem is similar to other programs I have come across not working properly with network home directories, e.g. Adobe Acrobat Pro. I discovered that several of these badly written programs will work with network home directories with no complicated adjustments if you share the network home directories via NFS instead of AFP.
To do this you will need to edit the share properties, and then reselect the home directory location for each user account in Workgroup Manager. The old afp home directory path would look something like
afp://server.example.com/Volumes/Users
the new NFS path would look something like
nfs://server.example.com/Volumes/Users
Workgroup Manager will continue to list the old AFP style path until you have changed all the users to the new path.
Might be worth trying with a test user account.

Our network is perfectly capable of support the amount of data storage and throughput this required (and this worked properly prior to iMovie '09).
Does anyone happen to have a solution which works properly in this situation?
    Thanks!

  • I recently update to 8.2 and now I am unable to connect to my home Wi-Fi. Solutions?

I recently update to 8.2 and now I am unable to connect to my home Wi-Fi. Solutions?

Start with the simple things. Reboot your router by removing all power for 15-30 seconds. Then, as Knells suggests, reset the phone by holding the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears. Plan C is Settings/General/Reset - Reset Network Settings. None of these will cause data loss, but the last one will erase your WiFi passwords.

  • IMovie quit unexpectedly while importing videos. What is the solution?

I searched through the Discussions and found that there were a lot of frustration among the users who had the same problem of iMovie quitting unexpectedly. However I did not find a solution in the discussion threads.
For my case, it happened when iMovie was importing from a hard disk with MP_ROOT at the top folder and 101PNV01 as a sub-folder. From the trial and error, I found that it would work fine if I was just importing less than 10 video clips. However, when I was importing numerous video clips of up to a total of 20GB, it would crashed unexpectedly.
If I were to click on 'Report' button on the error message window, I would get the following very technical message. I had sent it to Apple but it was indicated that Apple would not reply. I am surprised that with the high number of crashes reported on iMovie in the Discussions, Apple did not come back with a good answer on this. -

  • Error -54 Importing to network Home folder

I posted this yesterday but I seem to have posted in iTunes for Windows by mistake, so here goes again:
Since upgrading to 10.4/iTunes 7 (I did both at the same time, now on 10.4.8/7.0.1) I'm having trouble importing to iTunes from anywhere- from files on the desktop to CDs. It doesn't matter what format (AAC/AAIF etc) I use.
When I try to import I can sometimes do one or two tracks, but most often none, before I get the message "Attemting to copy to the disk 'Home' failed. An unknown error occurred (-54)".
It seems to be a permissions issue, but copying in Finder works as normal. I am a network user but others on the same network with similar configuration have no problems.
If I choose not to copy the file into the iTunes music folder in preferences, there is no problem adding to the library. I've tried setting the location of iTunes Music to be elsewhere in my Home folder but this makes no difference.
    Thanks
    Phil

I did get this working. I had to change the hostname using the serversetup application via terminal
For anyone interested how it's done in the Terminal:
    - Go to /System/Library/ServerSetup/
    - Then type "./serversetup", and let the Usages help you out.
That seems to be the only way to change a hostname of a server. It cannot be done in Preferences > file sharing or Server Admin.
I then had to reconfigure the OD replica and reconfigure the sharepoint by disabling automount (press save) and then unsharing the folder (press save). It then has to be setup using the reverse process. Disabling automount and sharing at the same time did not work for me.
Only after this did it work. This is something Apple really didn't think about...

  • IMovies 06 - unable to import movies after several successful imports

I am importing Hi8 video from a Canon ES4000 using iMovies 06. I have had no problems until the last two days. iMovies seems to be recognizing the camera but will not import when I hit the import button. I get the acknowledgment from iMovies that "Camera is Connected" and "Camera Playing".
I am using a DAC-200 Data Video converter which is connected via firewire cable. Like I mentioned earlier I have had no problems. (I have successfully downloaded and burned 9 DVDs).
I have restarted computer, opened a new iMovies project, etc with no results.
The only thing I can think I have done recently is allowed a software update to be performed. Here is a list of my download log:
    2008-07-26 18:42:40 -0500: Installed "Safari" (3.1.2)
    2008-07-26 18:43:38 -0500: Installed "iTunes" (7.7)
    2008-07-26 18:47:26 -0500: Installed "Security Update 2008-004 (Intel)" (1.0)
    2008-07-27 18:15:35 -0500: Installed "AirPort Extreme Update 2008-002" (1.0)
I personally wouldn't think any of the above updates would cause a problem.
Would it be worth uninstalling the updates???
I would appreciate any help I can get....Frustrated to no end!

Shortly after posting this on the forum I unplugged and restarted everything one more time and now importing works. Still not sure what the problem was. Hopefully this will get me to the end of my project.

  • Unable to import music using home sharing?

My family and I used to have a shared iTunes account on an HP desktop computer. Over the years we have created our own accounts and since I just got the iPhone 4s I thought I should make my own. I have iTunes 10 and Windows Vista (I am using an HP laptop). I authorized my computer and created a home sharing account so I could transfer my music on to my laptop. I read the directions on the Apple website and followed all the directions until it says "Click the import button in the lower right hand corner." There's one small problem...there's no import button! I've also tried copy and paste, and that doesn't work either. Please help me and thank you

  • IMovie temporary files; importing fails on network home directory

    Hi all,
I work in a laboratory and manage a bunch of Macs. We have a 2x2.5GHZ G5 with 4G of memory and iMovie 6. The mac has two 300 GB disks that are in a concatenated raid group, so the system has about 450GB of free disk.
The mac is bound to an Open Directory server and users have network home directories. (The network file system happens to be AFS, which is probably unusual)
The problem I am having is that whenever I am importing a clip from any external source (in this case I have tried a Sony GL-2 and an external DV deck), after about 13 minutes of importing, imovie stops importing, and iMovie displays the blue screen that you get when a video source is connected but not playing... but, the camera is clearly still playing, if I look in the viewfinder. this failure mode is completely reproducible, and always fails at the exact same place. (but works fine on another mac, see below)
I have tried saving the iMovie project onto both local disk and into the networked home directory, with the same results in either case.
I've tried the same setup on an identical mac that is not using networked home directories (local only), which works fine. I suspect that the problem has to do with the way the network file system caches/buffers, but I have no idea where iMovie keeps its housekeeping/temporary files. I was under the impression that it is all kept in the project directory, wherever you happen to create it. Are there some files that get written to the home directory no matter where you save the project?

iMovie doesn't have temporary files. All files are kept in the project folder (or "package").

  • 10.6 School Network - iMovie 11 Crashes  when Importing - insufficient privileges

A network recently upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 and iLife from 9 to 11
Exporting Movies from I Can Animate to the network Home Folder and then importing into iMovie for editing, iMovie decided that the file didn't exist the first time then subsequently crashed on the second attempt.
Trialed a test exporting from iMovie and importing back into iMovie. This worked
First port of call, update the software.
Tried importing again. New message,  insufficient privileges.
    Solution:
Go to the shared drive where the Home Folders are located on the server. Use the righ click get info option rather than using WGM or Server Admin. Add the Student user group to the Sharing and Permissions area and apply to all enclosed folder.
This appears to fix the problem. I can only assume that the upgrade of either OS X or iLife had reset the privileges. I'll be keeping an eye on it and I'll be adding to this thread if the issue arises again.

An alternative solution....for now. If you copy the files to your desktop or in any other folder you want them (it's temporary), you can still import them in iMovie. Just click Archive, Import, Movies and search for the folder you put your files in. I did it several times with success, that means no error! Now I can use my files and edit them in iMovie. You can delete the files on the desktop, since iMovie has copied the files into the iMovie library.
Another possibility is drag and drop the files from your desktop directly into an event. iMovie will copy the files into the library. For both options I am not sure if analysation for stability en recognising persons had been done while importing, but I guess you can do that later on.
Do not make the mistake of importing them in Aperture or iPhoto, drag and drop it an iMovie-event and delete it in Aperture/iPhoto... You will only hear the audiostream, you will see miniatures in iMovie, though your videostream is gone. That's how I lost the first video of my second daughter .
Until there's a good solution or update from Apple it works for me. I hope it does for you too!

  • Unable to import video frompanasonic VDR-D105 DVD video camera to imovie HD

Trying to import my video from my dvd camera but imovie can not find camera. When I connect the firewire the camera locates DVD player software and allows me to play it on my computer, but not able to import to imovie. DVD Player allows my to clip my video but does not allow me to transfer of save it on my computer.
If I'm unable to import, Is there a work around to get my video in imovie, say quicktime?
I am using imovie HD 6.0.3.

    Hi S
    1. DVD-Cameras are for playback - not to be edited from.
iMovie, FinalCut Express and Pro works with miniDV tape Cameras
This course DVD and hard disk Cameras compact info to medium BUT in
a destructive way. You can't get full quality back to be edited.
miniDV also compacts to tape BUT Non-destructive = full quality to Mac.
    2. Does Your Camera really have FireWire. Most probably You are using
the USB-cable that was delivered with Your Camera. FW is buy extra.
Best solution - though sour. Change Camera
If this isn't an option You'll have to back convert to streaming DV that iMovie
    and FCE/P understands.
    - Converting programs like may be:
MPEG Streamclip converts from mpeg-1 to whatever you like (within reason).
    QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component
    or
via analog out on Camera via an A/D-box to FW to Mac.
Non is a good way though.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Unable to import movie files from iphoto '08 into imovie HD

I have recently bought a 2008 macbook (2.2 GHz) and have recently downloaded imovie HD in addition to owning iLife '08 due to its extra capabilities. I have found that I am unable to import any of my movie files from my iphoto library folder as it seems to need to open the actual iphoto application before the files can be accessed. In addition, when not using any specific program it would be nice to be able to access my photo/video files within the iphoto folder without iphoto automatically opening as the default viewer.
    Any ideas??!! Thanks.

    ahostmadsen wrote:
.. and I import AVI video clips directly without converting to .dv, without problems.
lucky you.. .avi is just a container, no 'format'/codec .. I can show you dozends of .avis, which will NOT import into iMHD6, due to being playback-codecs, not convertable by the underlying Quicktime engine into separte, editable audio+video streams ..
.. If you convert to .dv, the size just blows up.
dv is 13GB/h and a codec meant for editing; e.g. it stores every frame (video=30 frams/sec) of a recording, as mpegs usually doesn't do so.. = your Mac has to estimate content, when converting and 'recovering' the content = lossy process.
iMHD6 is a dv-editor; the mpeg4 feature is only a toy, to spice up iSight recordings.. for sure, the QTengine can convert a lot, but too much conversion (from one lossy codec, e.g. divx, into another, e.g. mp4) means a (dramatic) loss of pic quality..
    my 5€ cents ..

  • You are unable to log in...; Network Home directories; 10.4 & 10.5 Servers

    I have a solution!
Note: this is a new post because all previous posts dealing with this topic have been archived, MANY without an answer.
    Problem:
Users with Network Home directories can't log in. After entering their correct username and password, the following error message appears:
"You are unable to login to the user account 'username' at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
Problem occurs with v10.5 Leopard client attempting to login to a Network Home directory hosted on a v10.4 Tiger server.
    _Significant Troubleshooting Symptom:_
Client mac Console log (all Messages) contains the following entry at the time the user attempted to login to their Network Home directory:
    authorizationhost[509] ERROR | -[HomeDirMounter
    mountNetworkHomeWithURL:attributes:dir:Path:username:] |
    PremountHomeDirectoryWith Authentication( url=afp://server.example.com/Homes, homedir=
    /Network/Servers/server.example.com/Volumes/ServerHardDisk/Homes/username,
    name=username )
    returned 2
    _Computing/Network Environment:_
v10.5 Leopard server doing: DNS; Open Directory with Kerberos for Single Sign-On; AFP for half of all users' Network Home directories.
v10.4 Tiger server doing: AFP for the other half of the Network Home directories. Also, note that Open Directory is not running on this server, BUT IT IS CONFIGURED (using Server Admin) as "Connected to a Directory System" and has joined the Kerberos realm on the v10.5 Leopard server.
    v10.5 Leopard clients.
    Solution:
    v10.5 User Management manual
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/User_Managementv10.5.pdf
says share points for Network Home directories have to have Guest Access ENABLED. See step 5 on page 117 and step 12 on page 118. Note that these are two different settings, but seem consistent with each other.
I had followed/complied/set Guest Access according to steps 5 (page 117) and 12 (page 118) on BOTH the v10.5 Leopard AND the v10.4 Tiger servers. The solution that allows users to log on normally is:
Uncheck/disable Guest Access (as set in step 12 page 118) for the v10.4 Leopard server only. Leave "Share this item using AFP" checked. Uncheck "Allow AFP guest access."
The above worked for me. Your milage may vary. If anyone knows how to report this to Apple for fixing in the server software and/or clarification in User Management manual, please do. If anyone knows that this solution "breaks" other stuff, please post back.

  • Unable to log in to network homes after rebuilding directory

I am running an Xserve with system Version 10.4.7 (build 8J135) as an Open directory Master. My primary clients are Power Mac G5's running 10.4.7 as well. We are running networked home directories through afp. Just updated both systems this summer.
All was working fine until the first day of classes. Trying to fix a minor problem I seem to have created a bigger one. Laying the original problem aside, (lets just say that deleting the 80 user directory without a viable back-up was not the correct solution) after I reentered all the users by hand I started getting this message when I attempted to login with any of the network accounts:
“You are unable to connect to the user “Knewtson” at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred. The home folder for this user is located on an AFP or SMB server. Contact your system administrator for help.”
I did contact my IT support person and the two of us spent several days trying different options on multiple servers with multiple clients. What we finally discovered was this: If I delete a user and rebuild them exactly the same it would start working correctly.
So, I came in this morning and (for a second time this week) reentered all of the users. As I did this I periodically tested the new users on several of the lab computers to make sure all was working correctly. All was well when I finished.
Then I began adding the new users for this semester. I only added one before it all broke again. About half of the machines in the lab started giving me the same error message. In frustration I rebooted the server and all of the workstations in the Lab… now I get the error message on all of the machines.
Through all of this afp and password authentication has never failed. I can connect to the server through the network browser with any one of the user accounts and have all of the right file permissions and access to the correct home directories.
Checking the log files this seems to be the error I find associated to each failed attempt:
    LDAP Log:
    Sep 9 22:54:53 gtc110 slapd[50]: SASL [conn=445] Failure: no user in database\n
In the came second I get this in the Password service log.
    Password Service log:
    Sep 9 2006 22:54:02 RSAVALIDATE: success.
    Sep 9 2006 22:54:02 AUTH2: {0x45032389555c13fe000000cd000000cd, Knewtson } DIGEST-MD5 authentication succeeded.
    Sep 9 2006 22:54:02 QUIT: {0x45032389555c13fe000000cd000000cd, Knewtson } disconnected.
    Anybody have any suggestions? Please.
Power Mac G5 Quad (office) Xserve G4 (server)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   OSX Lab Manager
Power Mac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   OSX Lab Manager

The server is not serving DNS. On campus we use two different DNS servers and both the clients and the X serve seem to be bound correctly for forward and reverse lookups. My friend in IT is checking with the administrator of the DNS server to varify that this is correct. but I am afraid this is not my problem.
I did find another error in the LDAP log.
    Sep 11 03:15:04 gtc110 slapd[50]: do_search: invalid dn (cn=mounts, dc=gtc110,cd=shaw,dc=wmich,dc=edu)\n
    Sep 11 03:15:04 gtc110 slapd[50]: do_search: invalid dn (cn=groups, dc=gtc110,cd=shaw,dc=wmich,dc=edu)\n
Kerbrose in no running on the server either, and the machine fails to Kerbrosize with any log-in. I do not have a need to have Kerbros running so I haven't worried about this.
    Problem Continues.
