Import metadata cubes and dimensions

I have defined a set of dimensions and cubes using AWM in a 10g r2 database.
I want to import these definitions to OWB 10.2. I use the import wizard and connect to the database and schema where the AW is defined, the cubes and dimensions are not listed in the import wizard for importing. Why is these objects not listed?
Under the tables I can see the aw$ tables of the AWs defined using AWM.

I remember reading it's still not possible in OWB current version, but it'll be possible in future releases.
In the OWBRel2 FAQ doc. there's some significant info:
"Is it possible to import OLAP dimensions and cubes built using Analytic Workspace Manager?
There will be no “Out of the box” functionality to support this. However, there will be an Expert than can be downloaded from the Warehouse Builder exchange on OTN. For more information visit the Exchange website at:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/warehouse/htdocs/OWBexchange.html
All utilities posted on the Exchange are not part of any Warehouse Builder production release and are, therefore, not supported
Is the OLAP support consistent with the AWM interface. i.e. if I create a mapping in OWB, can I see / edit it in AWM?
Currently, if OLAP objects are modeled and deployed from OWB, the mappings are not visible within AWM. This will be resolved by the 10.2.0.3 database patchset, which will be out shortly."

• Formatting for cubes and dimensions

Is it possible to use different formatting on the cubes and dimensions in the subject area in OBIEE? We're on 11.1.1.6.2. Our report writers want to easily be able to differentiate between the 2. Can we make the cubes bold or use a different font or text/background color than the dimensions?

• Create Cubes and Dimension Help

Hi Experts,
I am using +11.1.0.7.0 version of Oracle Databse and OWB Client+. I am trying to create Dimensions and Cubes using the OWB tool but everytime unsuccessfull.
1. I tried using the exisiting Dimesnions and Cubes in the SH Schema as a base. However when i deployed it gave me the error.
2. I tried to use the examples from the Oracle Library website
http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/db/11g/r1/owb/owb11g_update_extend_knowledge/less5_modeling_target/less5_modeling_target.htm
But trying that too produce me some errors.
So the other way round i have now installed AWM (Analytic Workspace Manager) which is easily makes Cubes and Dimensions and also exports to the OBIEE Repository. But for some reasons i have to again switch back to OWB. Is there more documents which describes each and every step while preparing the Dimensions.
Regards,+
Ravi Remje+

Hi Ravi
There are OBEs which include dimensional object creation (the 10gR2 one is applicable to 11gR1);

• How to get Cube and Dimension ID from SSAS Database programatically

Hi All,
I am processing one SSAS cube from SSIS package and processing the cubes dynamically .For this am putting the Cube ID ,Cube name, Dimension ID, Dimension Name in a table and generating the XML programmatically.
I can right click the properties of the dimension and cube and will get the ID information. But is there any way we can get the ID information programmatically .So that On the fly I will get the information and create the XML without storing
the these information in table.
We are using 2008 R2
Thanks in advance
Roshan

Hi,
Here is the C# code you want. Try it and see.
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Xml;
using AMO = Microsoft.AnalysisServices;
namespace ConsoleApplication4
class Program
static void Main(string[] args)
AMO.Server oServer = new AMO.Server();
oServer.Connect(@"Provider=MSOLAP.5;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorksDW;Data Source=DEVWKS6\MSSQLSERVERMDX");
foreach (AMO.Database db in oServer.Databases)
foreach (AMO.Cube cube in db.Cubes)
Console.WriteLine(System.String.Format("Cube Name : {0} Cube ID : {1}", cube.Name, cube.ID));
foreach (AMO.CubeDimension dim in cube.Dimensions)
Console.WriteLine(System.String.Format("Dimension Name : {0} Dimension ID : {1}", dim.Name, dim.ID));
System.Console.WriteLine("");
System.Console.WriteLine("");
oServer.Disconnect(true);
oServer.Dispose();
System.Console.ReadLine();
If you know your target SSAS Database Name, then you could use LINQ to narrow your search. Take a look into the following Code.
AMO.Database db = oServer.Databases.Cast<AMO.Database>().Where<AMO.Database>(SSASdb => SSASdb.Name == "AdventureWorksDW").FirstOrDefault();
foreach (AMO.Cube cube in db.Cubes)
Console.WriteLine(System.String.Format("Cube Name : {0} Cube ID : {1}", cube.Name, cube.ID));
foreach (AMO.CubeDimension dim in cube.Dimensions)
Console.WriteLine(System.String.Format("Dimension Name : {0} Dimension ID : {1}", dim.Name, dim.ID));
System.Console.WriteLine("");

• Import Comments data and Dimension Members from csv file via Data Manager

Dear Experts,
I have two questions regarding the data manager.
Q1.Is it possible to import "Comments" from the csv file via Data Manager?
We'd like to import the amount with "Comments".
My image of csv file is like below;
ACCOUNT,CATEGORY,TIME,ENTITY,INPUTCURRENCY,AMOUNT,COMMENTS
1100000,ACTUAL,2010/06,LC,30000,This is comment
Q2.Is it possible to import the dimension "members" from the csv file via Data Manager?
We have a user-defined dimension named "Project"
and would like to import the members, instead of maintaining them in BPC administration manually.
I found an online help information which says "Import Master Data from a Data File Example",
but I could not find any relevant sample package for this.
(I tried to import the members by using "Import" package, but it failed...)
reference:http://help.sap.com/saphelp_bpc75/helpdata/en/86/8b1bfc12c94fb0b585cca70d6f1b61/content.htm
Thanks in advance for your help.
Fumi

Hi Fumi,
In this case, I would suggest you to create a customized SSIS package which will fill-in the "Comment<APP>" table, according to the csv file you have. I do not know any standard package that allows you to import comment the way you would like...

• Mapping facts/cubes and dimensions

I am currently trialling OWB 9.0.3 before we decide whether to use it to build a data warehouse.
I have been impressed so far and we will probably make a decision soon.
One thing I am not sure how to do is mapping a fact/cube with foreign keys to dimensions.
I have been doing this by creating a join which joins each row of the fact/cube with the corresponding row in the dimension, but whilst on the oracle warehouse builder: implementation course the tutor said you wouldn't normally do it this way.
Anyway if you can give me an idea of how you join the dimensions to the fact/cube I would be grateful
Thanks
Nina

Nina,
In the star schema implementation, cubes are joined to the lowest level of each dimension. OWB lets you define foreign keys to each dimension when you create or edit your cube.
If you'd like to see a short (10 minutes) online demo on this, it's called "Dimensional Design" http://otn.oracle.com/products/warehouse/htdocs/OTN_demo.html
Last point, I am surprised you are trying OWB 9.0.3 - this is a very old (July 2002) release. Please download the latest OWB 9.2 from http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/warehouse/index.html

• Deleting cube or dimension via XML

Does anybody have an XML template I can use to delete cubes and/or dimensions from an Analytic Workspace, rather than using AWM ? I have a PL/SQL utility to create cubes and dimensions via XML templates (using DBMS_AW_XML.EXECUTE), but I'd like to build in functionality to delete structures if they already exist.
It looks like the Java API contains functions to perform these actions, but I'm not a Java person, and I'd like to trigger these actions from my PL/SQL utility, and executing XML seems a neat option.

I managed to find a way of doing it, using XML like the attached, where you replace CUBEXYZ with the name of the cube you wish to delete. Similar approach works for deleting dimensions.
<!-- <!DOCTYPE XMI SYSTEM 'Model.dtd' > -->
<AWXML version = '1.0' timestamp = 'Mon Feb 11 13:29:11 2002'>
<AWXML.content>
<Delete Id="Action0">
<ActiveObject>
<Cube Id="CUBEXYZ.CUBE">
</Cube>
</ActiveObject>
</Delete>
</AWXML.content>
</AWXML>

• BIDS 2008 - Making changes to underlying schema at what point is it better to just blow away the cube and rebuild?

What are some tips or other things you have come to discover or use when making schema changes to the underlying database -vs- impact on the cube and dimension usage etc? Is it easier sometimes to just start over with the cube? I realize you
can make schema changes and refresh the DSV, but if you change column names of the keys in the Fact table(s) or others, then likely you will have to reconfigure all the impacted areas in your cube. Have you ever had BIDS just get confused similar to
how it gets confused sometimes when doing SSIS or SSRS projects?

Hi Shitbit,
For a SQL Server Analysis Services database, when changes occur in the schema of an underlying data source, you can refresh the data source view to incorporate all of the changes to each of the underlying data sources. Refreshing a data source view updates
the whole data source view.
if you change column names of the keys in the Fact table(s) or others.
In this case, you changed the relationships between fact table and dimension table. So you need to configure it manually. Please refer to the link below to see the details.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178448.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
In your scenario, it's hard to understand your exact requirement, it would be nice if you can provide us more infromation about your environment, so that we can make further analysis.

Hi Jyothi,
This error usually comes because of presence of zombie ./ bad request. I would suggest you to check few of the tables and search for your request "REQU_DBCFVY9N1691OYQYNCMUGCSGM" in them if you are able to find it then delete that entry from there, there after you should not face error. Check if the request mentioned above is present in the below mentioned tables? If yes delete them from there.
RSREQICODS, RSTSODS, , RSICCONT, RSODSACTREQ.
Also check if the notes mentioned in the below thread are applicable in your case?
Error when deleting requests in cube
Thanks

• Export - import between ASO and BSO cubes of different structure

Hi everybody!
I have a 'large' ASO cube with information for a period of several years.
I need to be able to load a smaller slice (e.g. one quarter) from the 'large' cube into a BSO cube with a different (simpler) structure , perform calculations and then load the updated data back to the 'large' ASO cube.
What's the best way to approach this (import - export)?
Thanks in advance,
Alex

Hi GlennS,
Hello and thank you again for the help.
I'm running version 9.3.1
The ASO cube has 12 dimensions plus 8 attribute dimensions.
The BSO cube - 8 dimensions plus 2 attribute dimensions.
Data size:
The ASO cube is about 1 GB, about 16 M input level cells. Only about 10 % of it will be extracted and loaded into the BSO cube.
The BSO cube is ~ 300 MB fully calculated. 300,000 existing blocks
I prefer not to load the BSO cube from the same source as because ASO cube contains not only the source data, but also modifications - for example - allocations etc. I would like to keep these modifications and to be able to load (modified) data to BSO, make additional modifications and then 'save' the modified data back to the ASO.
How should I approach loading data back to the ASO? I will need to 'replace' a slice of ASO cube - delete the 'old version' cells and load new version from the BSO cube.
Thanks,
Alex

You need a PDF editor, at the high end use Adobe's Acrobat Professional, at the low end use the editing features in Preview (pre-loaded on your iMac). However you should probably look at the Mac App Store, you will find many of PDF editing applications. You simply need to find one that suits your needs.

• Import Metadata 2 missing cube objects

I have cubes and tables etc built in DEV. I am trying to import them into PROD.
The problem is 2 cubes I have built in DEV do not show up in the SELECT OBJECT window but the others are visible.
So I went back to DEV and tried to import a cubes, the same 2 cubes are missing from the window but they are build, deployed, and pushed to the EUL where they are being used.
Any ideas? Do I need to refresh the repository or something. Or are these cubes not deployed properly even they are currrently being used?
Thanks for the help

I figured this one out.
Even thought the cubes are built and deployed and being used. The control center lists them as not deployed. Strange since we have been using them both for several months.
Thanks again.

• Importing metadata and changing locations

Hello!
I've encountered a problem regarding imported data. I was developing a datawarehouse on a temporary system with OWB installed. I created lots of mappings and tables etc. No we have set up a new database server and I've installed the new OWB repository to this new system. Everything seems to work fine otherwise, but I'm having trouble importing the old data.
I have exported the metadata in the old system and then imported it straight to the new system. The process itself goes smoothly, but I am unable to update the location information of the database modules. When I import for example a table module, everything seems to go alright, but the object does not appear in the control center at all. If I try to configure the table object, I see that the location field is empty and I can't set it to any value. The locations and users in the new system are different than in the old system due to bad naming conventions used in the old system.
Do I have to have exactly the same usernames, location names and module names in the new system as in the old system if I want to import metadata AND be able to deploy it as well?
I hope someone can understand what I mean here.
Regards,
Erik

Hello Oleg,
No. I did not install OWB software on Server2. It is an AIX server which is supposed to only host the full production database of our organization and no additional software components. I used the repository assistant to create a new repository owner on Server2. This process went smoothly.
Then I connected to the Server2 repository via the Design Center on my workstation. I then created a new user via the Global Explorer --> Security --> Users. The new user had the "used as a target schema" tagged. I proceeded then to create the database modules as usual.
The configuration for the whole system is illustrated here (Figure 2-5):
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31080_01/doc/install.102/b28224/install_rep02.htm#BGBGEFJD
As for Server2 using the Server1 Control Center:
In the (Design Centers) Connection Explorer panel I added a new Control Center (SERVER1_CONTROL_CENTER) in the Control Center menu. I added the Server1 (repository owner) connection details to the prompts. Then I opened up the DEFAULT_CONFIGURATION from my selected project module and selected the new SERVER1_CONTROL_CENTER as the Control Center for the opened project. After this I could use the Control Center normally... except for the mapping deployment bug.
Thanks for taking a look at my issue.
Regards,
Erik
