Create Cubes and Dimension Help

Hi Experts,
I am using +11.1.0.7.0 version of Oracle Databse and OWB Client+. I am trying to create Dimensions and Cubes using the OWB tool but everytime unsuccessfull.
1. I tried using the exisiting Dimesnions and Cubes in the SH Schema as a base. However when i deployed it gave me the error.
2. I tried to use the examples from the Oracle Library website
http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/db/11g/r1/owb/owb11g_update_extend_knowledge/less5_modeling_target/less5_modeling_target.htm
But trying that too produce me some errors.
So the other way round i have now installed AWM (Analytic Workspace Manager) which is easily makes Cubes and Dimensions and also exports to the OBIEE Repository. But for some reasons i have to again switch back to OWB. Is there more documents which describes each and every step while preparing the Dimensions.
Regards,+
Ravi Remje+

Hi Ravi
There are OBEs which include dimensional object creation (the 10gR2 one is applicable to 11gR1);

• How to create cube and measure in sql?

How to create cube and measure in sql?

Cubes, measures and dimensions are created in the AW using the Java API for Analytic Workspaces or through XML documents that are processed by this API. SQL commands are not available for creating cubes, measures or OLAP dimensions.

• Import metadata cubes and dimensions

I have defined a set of dimensions and cubes using AWM in a 10g r2 database.
I want to import these definitions to OWB 10.2. I use the import wizard and connect to the database and schema where the AW is defined, the cubes and dimensions are not listed in the import wizard for importing. Why is these objects not listed?
Under the tables I can see the aw$ tables of the AWs defined using AWM.

I remember reading it's still not possible in OWB current version, but it'll be possible in future releases.
In the OWBRel2 FAQ doc. there's some significant info:
"Is it possible to import OLAP dimensions and cubes built using Analytic Workspace Manager?
There will be no “Out of the box” functionality to support this. However, there will be an Expert than can be downloaded from the Warehouse Builder exchange on OTN. For more information visit the Exchange website at:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/warehouse/htdocs/OWBexchange.html
All utilities posted on the Exchange are not part of any Warehouse Builder production release and are, therefore, not supported
Is the OLAP support consistent with the AWM interface. i.e. if I create a mapping in OWB, can I see / edit it in AWM?
Currently, if OLAP objects are modeled and deployed from OWB, the mappings are not visible within AWM. This will be resolved by the 10.2.0.3 database patchset, which will be out shortly."

• Formatting for cubes and dimensions

Is it possible to use different formatting on the cubes and dimensions in the subject area in OBIEE? We're on 11.1.1.6.2. Our report writers want to easily be able to differentiate between the 2. Can we make the cubes bold or use a different font or text/background color than the dimensions?

• How to get Cube and Dimension ID from SSAS Database programatically

Hi All,
I am processing one SSAS cube from SSIS package and processing the cubes dynamically .For this am putting the Cube ID ,Cube name, Dimension ID, Dimension Name in a table and generating the XML programmatically.
I can right click the properties of the dimension and cube and will get the ID information. But is there any way we can get the ID information programmatically .So that On the fly I will get the information and create the XML without storing
the these information in table.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
Here is the C# code you want. Try it and see.
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Xml;
using AMO = Microsoft.AnalysisServices;
namespace ConsoleApplication4
class Program
static void Main(string[] args)
AMO.Server oServer = new AMO.Server();
oServer.Connect(@"Provider=MSOLAP.5;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorksDW;Data Source=DEVWKS6\MSSQLSERVERMDX");
foreach (AMO.Database db in oServer.Databases)
foreach (AMO.Cube cube in db.Cubes)
Console.WriteLine(System.String.Format("Cube Name : {0} Cube ID : {1}", cube.Name, cube.ID));
foreach (AMO.CubeDimension dim in cube.Dimensions)
Console.WriteLine(System.String.Format("Dimension Name : {0} Dimension ID : {1}", dim.Name, dim.ID));
System.Console.WriteLine("");
System.Console.WriteLine("");
oServer.Disconnect(true);
oServer.Dispose();
System.Console.ReadLine();
If you know your target SSAS Database Name, then you could use LINQ to narrow your search. Take a look into the following Code.
AMO.Database db = oServer.Databases.Cast<AMO.Database>().Where<AMO.Database>(SSASdb => SSASdb.Name == "AdventureWorksDW").FirstOrDefault();
foreach (AMO.Cube cube in db.Cubes)
Console.WriteLine(System.String.Format("Cube Name : {0} Cube ID : {1}", cube.Name, cube.ID));
foreach (AMO.CubeDimension dim in cube.Dimensions)
Console.WriteLine(System.String.Format("Dimension Name : {0} Dimension ID : {1}", dim.Name, dim.ID));
System.Console.WriteLine("");

• How to re-create CUBE and not corrupt reports based on CUBE

Hi,
We are using a prototyping approach to releasing CUBEs to our users as they only tend to understand what they want after playing with the tool a bit, this has meant that additional requirements sometime require another dimension for eg.
This can't be added to a CUBE so we have to delete and re-create the CUBE.
The issue is that users have developed spreadsheets against these CUBEs that get corrupted if they CUBE is deleted and re-created. So , what is the way forward for incorporating user requirements into an existing CUBE, does a change to the design require all reports/spreadsheets to be re-written or is there some trick that will retain the links to pre-existing reports.
BTW , am using 10.2.0.2 AWM and DB.
Thanks for any assistance,
Brandon

As long as the dimensionality of the cube has the same contents (even if it is in a different order), the reports will continue to work in my experience. If you add a new dimension, the report doesn't have a selection set up for that dimension and therefore is now invalid and all reports must be recreated against that cube. Adding new levels above the leaf level of your dimensions and adding new measures should not corrupt their reports.
I would suspect after a few iterations of losing their reports, your users will learn to test and specify their needs more completely to ensure they have all of the required dimensions.
Alternatively, you can set up one cube that only consists of calculated measures that has ALL of the dimensions of your AW. Create calculated measures that then point to these other cubes which may not have all of the dimensions. In this case, the report is using the "calculated" measures whose dimensionality does not change even if you add a dimension to one of the underlying cubes.
For example, if you have Time, Customer, Product, and Geography in your AW, but you choose to only have Time and Product in a cube called YEAR_ITEM_PLAN that holds your targets for the year, and they later decide to do their plans Time, Product and Gegoraphy, you could recreate the YEAR_ITEM_PLAN cube to include Geography and as long as the calculated members cube you created earlier always had geography, their reports should continue to function.

• Mapping facts/cubes and dimensions

I am currently trialling OWB 9.0.3 before we decide whether to use it to build a data warehouse.
I have been impressed so far and we will probably make a decision soon.
One thing I am not sure how to do is mapping a fact/cube with foreign keys to dimensions.
I have been doing this by creating a join which joins each row of the fact/cube with the corresponding row in the dimension, but whilst on the oracle warehouse builder: implementation course the tutor said you wouldn't normally do it this way.
Anyway if you can give me an idea of how you join the dimensions to the fact/cube I would be grateful
Thanks
Nina

Nina,
In the star schema implementation, cubes are joined to the lowest level of each dimension. OWB lets you define foreign keys to each dimension when you create or edit your cube.
If you'd like to see a short (10 minutes) online demo on this, it's called "Dimensional Design" http://otn.oracle.com/products/warehouse/htdocs/OTN_demo.html
Last point, I am surprised you are trying OWB 9.0.3 - this is a very old (July 2002) release. Please download the latest OWB 9.2 from http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/warehouse/index.html

• Deleting cube or dimension via XML

Does anybody have an XML template I can use to delete cubes and/or dimensions from an Analytic Workspace, rather than using AWM ? I have a PL/SQL utility to create cubes and dimensions via XML templates (using DBMS_AW_XML.EXECUTE), but I'd like to build in functionality to delete structures if they already exist.
It looks like the Java API contains functions to perform these actions, but I'm not a Java person, and I'd like to trigger these actions from my PL/SQL utility, and executing XML seems a neat option.

I managed to find a way of doing it, using XML like the attached, where you replace CUBEXYZ with the name of the cube you wish to delete. Similar approach works for deleting dimensions.
<!-- <!DOCTYPE XMI SYSTEM 'Model.dtd' > -->
<AWXML version = '1.0' timestamp = 'Mon Feb 11 13:29:11 2002'>
<AWXML.content>
<Delete Id="Action0">
<ActiveObject>
<Cube Id="CUBEXYZ.CUBE">
</Cube>
</ActiveObject>
</Delete>
</AWXML.content>
</AWXML>

1. Yes. you can
It doesnt necessary need to set up a OLAP system. However making design inline with OLAP would be easier to implement in SSAS
2. Again yes
But using OLTP designed tables in SSAS/SSRS would require some additional overheads at querying level like referenced lookups in SSAS vs lots of joins in backend queries in SSRS.

• BIDS 2008 - Making changes to underlying schema at what point is it better to just blow away the cube and rebuild?

What are some tips or other things you have come to discover or use when making schema changes to the underlying database -vs- impact on the cube and dimension usage etc? Is it easier sometimes to just start over with the cube? I realize you
can make schema changes and refresh the DSV, but if you change column names of the keys in the Fact table(s) or others, then likely you will have to reconfigure all the impacted areas in your cube. Have you ever had BIDS just get confused similar to
how it gets confused sometimes when doing SSIS or SSRS projects?

Hi Shitbit,
For a SQL Server Analysis Services database, when changes occur in the schema of an underlying data source, you can refresh the data source view to incorporate all of the changes to each of the underlying data sources. Refreshing a data source view updates
the whole data source view.
if you change column names of the keys in the Fact table(s) or others.
In this case, you changed the relationships between fact table and dimension table. So you need to configure it manually. Please refer to the link below to see the details.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178448.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
In your scenario, it's hard to understand your exact requirement, it would be nice if you can provide us more infromation about your environment, so that we can make further analysis.

• Insert SSAS Cube records measure and dimensions to relational table

Hi,
I need to retrieve one measure with a couple of its related dimensions from an ssas cube and have it stored in SQL table. How could this be done?
In order to read data from cube and insert into SQL relational table
this thread says to use openquery but states that it will only work if there are measures on the columns
and no dimensions on columns.
Is there a way to query a measure with a couple of its related dimensions
in MDX using openquery? Or any other way to query the cube to get these into SQL?
(Or should I better get the data from the base SQL tables which the cube is built from?)
Thanks for advising
Namnami

Hi Namnami,
Sure Darren Gosbell thread will help you, you can try below things.
You can get more info on
this link
Basically to write SQL+MDX combined we have to create link server from where we want data to combine with SQL. To create link server you need to have Admin access to the SQL Server.
IF IS_SRVROLEMEMBER ('sysadmin') = 1
print 'Current user''s login is a member of the sysadmin role'
ELSE IF IS_SRVROLEMEMBER ('sysadmin') = 0
print 'Current user''s login is NOT a member of the sysadmin role'
ELSE IF IS_SRVROLEMEMBER ('sysadmin') IS NULL
print 'ERROR: The server role specified is not valid.'
Above Query returns the whether you have admin admittance to the server or not to create Link Server.
More Details on Hybrid Query-
USE
AdventureWorksDW2008R2
GO
EXEC
sp_addlinkedserver
@server='Test',
@srvproduct='',
@provider='MSOLAP',
@datasrc='localhost',
@catalog='Adventure Works DW 2008R2'
Declare @MDXExpression as Varchar(MAX)
Select @MDXExpression =
SELECT
NON EMPTY
[Measures].[Sales Amount]
,[Measures].[Standard Product Cost]
,[Measures].[Tax Amount]
,[Measures].[Total Product Cost]
} ON 0,
NON EMPTY
[Sales Channel].[Sales Channel].[Sales Channel]
} ON 1
FROM
[Adventure Works]
Exec ('SELECT * INTO ##TestTemp FROM OpenQuery(TestTest1,''' + @MDXExpression + ''')')
SELECT
CONVERT(varchar,t."[Sales Channel].[Sales Channel].[Sales Channel].[MEMBER_CAPTION]") AS [Date],
(CONVERT(nvarchar,t."[Measures].[Sales Amount]")) AS [Sales Amount],
(CONVERT(nvarchar,t."[Measures].[Standard Product Cost]")) AS [Standard Product Cost],
(CONVERT(nvarchar,t."[Measures].[Tax Amount]")) AS [Tax Amount],
(CONVERT(nvarchar,t."[Measures].[Total Product Cost]")) AS [Total Product Cost]
from
##TestTemp t
--DRop Table ##TestTemp
Query Execution-
1-
So above query first creates liked server with named as 'Test'.
2-
After that MDX query executed on linked server where we have kept the MDX query in MDXExpression variable.
3-
Using OpenQuery function data gets dump in to ##TestTemp table.
4-
Finally we get the data from ##TestTemp table.

• MultiProvider Created from #.5 cube and 7.0 Cube

I have one global cube created with update rules and transfer rules and everything, the way we create in BW 3.5 (Delivery)
I have another newly created cube using BI 7.0 (History Delivery data) with Transformation and the DTP.
I have created one Multiprovider combining this 2 cube. The 1st cube contains all the data for Delivery with Material, Plant, 0MAT_PLANT and Delivery quantity and dates and other things as per the requirement. This is a cube to be used going forward.
The 2nd cube contains only Delivery data from legacy system loaded in to this History cube from Flat file. This cube only has 0Material, 0Plant, 0MAT_plant, Delivery Qunatity and the requested date.
Now the Multiprovider has common chars and KFs from these 2 cubes.
When I run the query on this MultoProvider to see results of past 12 months (Requested Date) excluding current month with quantity. I get only the results from the 1st cube. I have created test query on both the cubes individually and I get results on both those queries but when it comes to MP it just gives from the 1st cube which is created in BW 3,5.
Now My questions are
1) Does it make any difference for MP if one of the cube is in 3,5 and other in 7.0 ??
2) If No then what else could be the problem. I have checked the Data both of them look identicle and correct as far as I think unless I have made some basic error??
Please help. Will provide points.

Is it required that I have to select the particular InfoProviders under the DataPackage under Characteristics for the QUERY??
If you wish to see the data in the query that is stored in a particulat cube that form part of the multi, then you could.
Was I creating query the wrong way? I want to know the reason, It did work but I want to know the logic though.
No. it is wrong. But, if the query does not read data from more than one cube, but if you create it to run from multi cubes, then query response time may suffer.
