Import split to hundreds of 1 sec clips in iMovie08

I Try to import movie from my Sony DCR-TRV8E Cam.
On iMovie8 hundreds of single clips (that are really single clips!) with a length of app. 1 sec. are created and overload the preview.
In iMovie6/iMovieHD there exists a setting for import: on scene change always new clip. If this setting is disabled, the cam works pretty fine.
Does such a setting exist also in iMovie8 - or can anybody help?
MiLo

Did you just try the tape over again? I've been importing all my MiniDV tapes with my sony TRV900 and have noticed a few times that this happens, it's like a glitch or something. I just close iMovie '08 turn off my camcorder then start again. Pretty much the second time around this doesn't happen. I've imported about 15 tapes so far and have had to "re-do" about 2 or 3 tapes.
Hope that helps, if that doesn't fix it I would try to borrow a friends camera to try the import.

  • Import splitting into hundreds of .3 second clips!

    We have a Panasonic PV-D400D, and iMovie's last few versions have erroneously imported all video as tons of little .3 second clips. The way we got around this was to import as one single clip, not using the auto clip thing in iMovie. However, it looks like there is now no preference for that.
    Am I out of luck? Is there a setting I'm missing? Anyone with such a camera know if there's a setting on the camera itself that is causing this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi
    Can't find Your Camera on the Web. So my thoughts:
    To get this I would:
    • record in LP-mode (90 min on a 60min tape)
    • play it back on another Camera
    • to a Mac with an exteral hard disk NOT Formatted as Mac OS Extended.
    All this would give a non working situation. Changing them to
    • SP-mode (60min)
    • use same Camera as did the shooting
    • import to internal hard disk (formatted Mac OS Extended) with 25Gb free space
    would make it as easy as possibly.

    Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie HD 6.
    iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
    So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
    One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
    Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

  • How do I split a single event with many clips into multiples events, one event per date?

    I archived the video from my AVCHD camera into a Final Cut video archive. Later I imported this into iMovie. All the clips from this archive (spanning several months) are dumped into a single event. If I recall, older versions of iMovie would import video into separate events for each day. Then I would go through and give each event a meaningful name (e.g., "Mary's Birthday").
    This is what I would like. Is there a way to split this very long event into multiple events, one for each day that is present in the event?

    Not automatically but with imovie 10 you can create new events with any name you like then move clips into them from other events  (Just like FCP 10.1).   See:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov1d890f00b
    You can also choose to display clips in an event grouped by date.

  • CS5 Importing Split EX files

    Premiere CS4
    I have just done a shoot of a church service. I have 4 EX takes, the first 3 are single clips and the forth is spanned over 8 files. How do I import these into Premiere so that the 8 split files are recombined into 1 clip? If I use 'import folder' I get the eight separate clips, if I open media browser I see the 4 takes as expected but when I drag and drop, the first 3 ordinary takes are imported fine but only the first section of the spanned clip in imported. I am importing from a Sony EX browser copied folder, all the metadata folders seem to be there.

    Putting xxx-xxxx-01 on the time line only places that 15 min clip the other sections stay in the source bin. This is also true if I drag the first clip into the source monitor, still only the first 15min.
    This is my first trial with my new cameras. I have bought a PMW 320 as my A camera and a EX1r for the B. I have an unusual way of editing which means I have a dozen or so active tracks and i found that my Core2 Quad with 4gb ram is not powerful enough for HD. I have just built an i7 with 24gb ram and a cuda hack video card as a replacement, when I have finished my last SD edit on my old machine I will install cs5 and my existing raid discs. My old system runs with a Matrox RTX2 I will try and do without this in my new setup ( I will miss the Matrox color correction though).

    My iPad2 is only allowing me to email 30 sec clips of a video that I made which is saved in Photos on my iPad2. How can I get it to email the entire video?

    It is most likely a size issue. I have a 3 minute video that's almost 200 megs. If you're just trying to show it, you might consider youtube. if you're wanting to upload/share it then you can try things like Dropbox or other onlilne file sharing programs.

  • Additional audio channels being imported with XML from FCP. Merged Clips. Out of Sync

    Problem
    When I import an XML Interchange Format V5 file from FCP7 and then import into Premiere Pro CC, my merged clips now have 4 audio channels. 2 from the original file and 2 from the merged audio.
    Versions
    FCP 7
    Premiere Pro CC 7.2
    Workflow
    * Create merged clips in FCP
         * ProRes Video clip with camera audio
         * Stereo audio clip
         * Sync in Timeline
         * Delete unneeded audio tracks, reducing track on video clip to 1 mono track, centered
         * Drag to browser
    * Export XML Interchange V5
    * Open Premiere
    * Import XML Interchange File
    * Clips are imported, HOWEVER
         * Clips now have 4 tracks of audio
         * Tracks 1-2 are audio from the original Video clip
         * Tracks 3-4 are audio from the synced second source audio file
         * Additionally, tracks 1-2 are now OUT OF SYNC
    I cannot find a way around this. Clips now all have out of sync indicators on them. Merged audio is insync, and original audio is out of sync.
    I do not want to have to resync all of my audio, everything is tagged and organized into bins.
    Anybody know why this happens and a workaround?

    Ha ha, an excellently wry comparison.
    I'm using photo-jpeg because it was reccomended to me as a way to achieve greater image quality when exporting within the confines of youtube.

  • "Import" splits takes into clips and loses footage

    When importing footage from both my Sony HDV camcorder (directly) and my Sony DVCAM camcorder (via a Sony DSR-11 deck) to my Mac Mini using firewire cables, FCPX breaks some takes into multiple shorter clips.
    Whilst this could just be annoying, it's much worse than that as it loses footage as it does it, at the unwanted clip breaks.
    FCP Studio used to give the option of auto splitting imports into clips, FCPX appears not to.
    Any ideas for preventing the automatic splitting of takes?
    Thanks.
    P.S. Most recently, my one minute of colour bars is now six separate clips!

    I don't run iMovie 08, so am not entirely familiar with it's use. I think that you can export each iMovie 08 clip to a new iMovie 08 project, then export that new project (containing one clip) to Quicktime, and from there import into iM6 for editing.

  • How import from camcorder to iMovie as one clip?

    When I import from my mini-dv camcorder (Canon) into iMovie '09, iMovie splits into many clips. The problem is, it gets confused and about 10% of the clips are like 0.1 sec and named something not related to date/time like the rest of the clips. As a result, they appear in the event library out of order, creating a mess. I just want to import as one clip to avoid this misordering. My objective is archive video from tape to hard drive. As background, I suspect the timecodes may be wacky on the mini-dv tape because it is a copy from an 8mm tape.
    I have many of these mini-dv tapes so an answer to this problem will save me many hours. I can achieve a 1-clip import using Vidi, but it won't automatically stop recording so I can't start one importing when I go to bed.
    Thanks

    I have the same problem. The video was created with a sony hcr-dc96 using the "smth int rec" mode. The would be a "time lapse video" in English. I suspect every frame looks like a new scene to the importer.
    It imports and creates an even, but if I click on the event I get the beach ball and unresponsiveness, and eventual crash. Looking at the even library I can see there are 3249 files in the folder corresponding to that event.
    Is there any way to recover using imovie? Do I need to import using some other means?

  • Can you import video from Mini DV in separate clips?

    I've finally got around to rescuing all the hours of video I've got stored on Mini DV tapes. When I imported one into iMovie though, it came in as one long clip. This is not ideal. I'd hoped/expected that the many clips would come in separately, based upon breaks in the timecode.
    I guess I can work my way through the one long clip, cutting it into bits, but that's very time consuming and I may as well have imported the footage manually.
    Does anyone know how I can get footage onto my Mac from Mini DV in separate clips? Or if there's an easy way to break this hour long clip I've already imported into pieces?
    Thanks very much.

    Hi
    As AppleMan1958 writes
    Normal DV footage will be split into clips.
    But I figur. If Your miniDV tape has a functioning TimeCode (not copy from VHS)
    then iMovie 1 to HD6 - had it as an option to make a full import or as "Individual Clips"
    This choise I can not find in iMovie'11.
    May be it's still as a flag and by some chance - this got wrongly set.
    To correct this (IF) - I would delete iMovie pref file/s and re-start iMovie and try to
    make a new Import/Capture.
    To do this -
    • Close iMovie
    • Find the pref file - iMovie pref file resides in.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences (folder)
    and is named. (one or more of these) - and put it/them on desktop
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    and find too - and put it on desktop
    com.apple.iApps.plist
    • Now re-start iMovie and try to do a new Import.
    Did it work ?

  • I have a 13 sec clip that gets shortened to .5 sec when I drop it into the project and can't adjust the destination to the source length

    I created my clip from 3 PPT slides (as movies, one of the options) and it imports into the event browser fine.  I am using the theme Forever is never long enough and it has little boxes where you are supposed to drop your clips.  When I drop them in, the clip only plays for the destination duration time.  If it is .5 sec but the source is 13 seconds, it won't let me adjust it to play the full 13 seconds.  Anybody know how to adjust them?

    It appears that you are using a Trailer (as distinct from a Theme). These are templates designed to give you a quick preview, similar to trailers you see at the movies. The clip lengths and music are all preset so that the video works perfectly in sync with the audio soundtrack. They are intended to be short, sharp and shiny - hence the very brief snippets of video employed, together with the accompanying matching music.
    A Trailer template can't be altered unless you convert it to a standard project. To do this conversion, firstly, it's a good idea to duplicate the Trailer. In Project Library view (where all your projects are listed) click on the name of your project then from the menu select File>Duplicate Project. Now click on the duplicate and from the menu select File>Convert to Project. Now you can edit the converted duplicate Trailer just like a normal project - but bear in mind that changing the clip durations will cause the video to go out of sync with the supplied soundtrack.
    Unless you are doing a highlights reel, your best option is to create a normal project from scratch, rather than using a Trailer template. When you create a new project you are given options as to whether you want to use a Theme or No Theme. Themes are quite different from Trailers and serve a different purpose. They help to spice up your video by introducing snazzy titles and transitions. You have complete flexibility as to clip lengths, transition styles, added music tracks and so forth.
    Hope this helps to clear up any misunderstanding you may have regarding Trailers versus Themes.

  • During Import, scene breaks are not starting new clip.

    Imovie HD: When importing from my camcorder (Mini DV) scene breaks are not starting new clips. The video is going into one clip which I then have to manually split each scene into individual clips before editing.
    My preferences are set to: Import/Start a new clip at each scene break=ON..
    The last time I used Imovie4, this same thing occurred. Prior to that, in Imovie4, it worked as advertised.
    Could it be my camera settings?? Panasonic PV-DV910

    Problem solved.
    I normally do not have the date and time displayed in the camera's viewfinder. So, I didn't realize that the date/time had been reset to 1998 and not active. After setting to date/time to the present, NEW recording - when imported - was being split into individual clips at the scene breaks.
    However the previously recorded video would not.
    My punishment for my lapse is to manually do the "split". But I am a much wiser videographer.
