Importing Flip and iPhone clips into FCP

What is FCP's preferred video format?
I have a funky project consisting of clips from iPhone and a Flip Mino HD camera. When either of these are imported directly into FCP, they won't play without rendering, and any edit or trim "undoes" the render, forcing them to be rendered again... and again...
I'm guessing the best strategy is to convert them -- before importing -- to a format that FCP will like better and will play smoothly, without constant re-rendering.
So: what's the best format to convert them into, and what's the best tool for doing that pre-conversion?
Or am I wrong, and is there a way to handle these Flip and iPhone clips in FCP without pre-converting them?

Okay, that seemed to work. Thanks!
But now there's a new, odd problem: I can't add transitions! After dropping these new clips in the timeline, they play fine without rendering... but whenever I try to add a transition (dissolve, wipe, etc.) between clips, FCP changes the 1 second transition to a 3 frame transition. And there doesn't seem to be any way to change the duration - no matter what I do, it keeps changing back to one frame. Strangely, I can add the normal transition to the end of the sequence, but not between clips.
Am I missing something? Does the DVCPRO50 progressive format somehow prohibit modifications like transitions?
(And should I start this as a new topic?)

  • Import clips into FCP X version 10.0.8 and keep the original clip names

Can you Import clips into FCP X version 10.0.8 and keep the original clip names in the event original media folder? in version 10.0.8 it automatically allocates date / time of the event. I need it to keep the original clip name i:e Clip0100 event folder original media Clip0100. I am aware you can change the clip name to original once in FCP X, But it's the event folder original media name which I want to remain as the original file name.

    Hi Tom,
    Thanks for the response.
I am aware you can do this change in the Info inspector so the original clip name from camera is used in the event library browser, but it does not change the clip name in the Final Cut Events Original Mieda file. This still remains as an event clip name "2013-05-23 17_08_13". I need the original clip name Clip0100 to remain as Clip0100 at import. FCP X doesn't seem to allow this happen any more in version 10.0.8.

  • Imported clips into FCP 10.1.3 contain no audio in Yosemite...

I am running FCP 10.1.3 on a mid 2012 15" MBP Retina with the following specs...
    2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    16GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Ever since I updated to the public beta of Yosemite, when I import clips into FCP X I get the clip but my audio is no longer attached. I assumed this was an issue with the beta and that it would be resolved in the actual release but alas, that is not the case. Does anybody have any experience with this or could anyone point me in a direction. Much appreciated.

Here is the requested screen shot. In the events list, you will see the clips have no waveforms. In the inspector, you can see that Audio is not even an option and in the Project Timeline, you will see that there is no Waveform present. This clip has audio attached. The source media is irrelevant as this happens with screen capture clips or with clips I've shot with 3 different cameras. If I check the source file, in finder or in the camera the audio is present. This only started happening when I upgraded to Yosemite.

  • Can't transfer/import XDCAM files from harddrive into FCP

hi, i filmed all of my footage using an XDCAM and had to return the cams immediately. so i copied all the clips from the capture media to an external hard drive (everything within the BPAV folder) one to one. i also downloaded and installed the XDCAM EX Clip Browser on my MacBook Pro and can view the clips.
the problem i have is that i can't import the clips into FCP. the "Import> SONY XDCAM..." feature in FCP won't allow me to access these files. the BPAV folder remains greyed out.
what do i need to do to get the clips into FCP? is there a different plugin i need? the clip browser won't let me export the clips to any other format. i'm stumped. i run FCP computer on my G5 PPC Quad core. the file browser only runs on Intel macs. so i use my MBP to view the clips but that's all i can do.
can someone please help me out ?
    many thx!

in the spirit of armano'os last post and FYI: i picked up the cams on short notice, never used them before and there were no instructions. the ppl just told me to copy the files over to my HD, since i had to return the cams immediately and had no time to hook up the cams to FCP.
the 'mistake' i seem to have made was that i looked at the data structure and saw that the clips always ended up in the CLPR folder within each BPAV folder - each in its own folder in that fiolder and with XML and data files - so i copied directly to that one BPAV folder i copied from the first capture media i moved to my hard drive instead of copying the entire BPAV folder from each capture media. however i tested the import immediately to see if it actually played back the files in the XDCAM clip browser and they did.
i assumed all was fine with this method and it would save me a lot of duplicate BPAV folders... hopefully though this isn't the end.

  • When I import video and place it into timeline as a raw file with no fx or any added processing I get the message that the video is unrendered and therefore it doesn´t playback?

FCE can use DV or AIC video formats natively.  Any other format will need to be converted to one of those two if you want to avoid constant rendering.  The clips you use must match the Sequence settings.

  • Can`t left click and drag clip into timeline..Need advice

Can`t left click and drag clip into timeline, or drag clips around in timeline.
Can insert into timeline from Source Window but can't drag from source window.
Can cut and paste within timeline.
Restarting cs5 doesn`t help, but restarting computer solves problem for a while.
Tried many mouses, but that didn`t help.

Thank you so much for asking
In the Project Panel a left click highlights the asset but ignores the drag.
In the timeline, a left click highlights the panel and when I try to drag it gives a flicker but that's all.
I can cut and paste in the timeline.
A restart of CS5 has no effect. Restarting the computer solves the problem for a while.
    Four different mouses--same problem.

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • When I import audio and move it into my timeline the project will no longer play?

When I import audio and move it into my timeline the project will no longer play?

The audio is a .wav file created in Audacity.
    The OS is Windows XP
    The verison is CS4
I have included images of the Sequence settings and the playback settings because I was not sure what information you would need.
I am not sure what you mean by waiting for the Audio to conform but I know I have imported the audio and gone back the next day and tried to place it in the timeline and it still did not work.

  • Is it possible to make is so that, immediately after I import a new clip into FCP, the file is automatically selected in the Event Library? (Similar to how After Effects and Premiere work).

Is it possible to make is so that, immediately after I import a new clip into FCPX, the file is automatically selected in the Event Library? (Similar to how After Effects and Premiere work). Right now, after I import a new file, I have to then go searching for it amid all the other files in my project. It would be extremely helpful if the file I just imported was already highlighted and selected after import, making it instantly "locatable" and ready to go.

in a perfect world, you do know the recording date, and you simply scroll to that date.
in a very perfect world, all your other imports are already tagged, so just have to create a smart list 'unrated' ...
(I know those messy Events… a friend of mine constantly ignores my advice to check the time/date on his camera; on every battery swap, the cam creates a very erratic timestamp ... his actual recordings are listed as made in "2004" or in "2020" .... )

  • Unknown symbols inside video clips imported form my iPhone 4 into iMovie 11

I recently upgraded my iLife to version 11 and have been really happy with the results so far. However when i import video clips from my iPhone 4 into one of my iMovie events it displayes a small yellow box in the bottom left corner of the clip. This box is not present on clips shot on other devices just my iphone clips. There are numbers inside the yellow box which on most of my clips says 30 but there are clips with 24 and 15. The presence of these boxes doesn't seem to be having a detremental effect and indeed all the editing functions still work. In addition these boxes are not present when the finished movie is exported. I'm not particularly bothered by their prescence but I would like to know why they are there, what they mean and if the can be removed?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Thanks
Now that I understand what it is, is it possible to adjust the clip's frame rate to match the project or vise versa? I've looked at project properties for the project and its set to 25fps but the box is greyed out and cant be changed.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks again.

  • Importing ITunes clips into FCP project

    Hello everyone,
is it possible to import an ITunes purchased song into the timeline of FCP? And if yes, what happens if I am exporting a videoclip? Will it actually work?
I purchased some songs on ITunes I want to use in a video project and now I am realizing that it might not work because of the copy protection.

you've got a few things going against you here ...
amongst them is the high likelyhood that you have not got the license to use the music clip in your video production, that the use of mp3 compressed audio is not viable in FCP, and yes, the tracks are copy protected (for good reason)

  • Import video and be broke into separate clips by scene breaks.

Is there no way anymore to have iMovie create separate clips for imported movies by scene breaks on the camcorder? I know previous versions would recognize when the filming stopped then started again and separate these into separate clips.
(I'm talking about in the Even Library not Projects)
I know I can select one frame and delete it to create separate clips then but its one more step and will lots of scene breaks makes it a pain in the @$$

I am importing from a Sony Digital 8 camcorder through firewire just like I always did. When I imported the footage in imovie o9 instead of detecting when the recording stopped and started again and breaking it into separate event clips it put it as on big clip.
It imports the clips as .dv files

  • Format mismatches: 1080pA clips into FCP timeline

For my HVX, in FCP, I'm using the suggested preset for 1080 24pA which cites a compressor setting of DVCPRO HD 1080p30. When I try to drag the clip into the timeline it says there is a mismatch--that the clip does not match the preset and I have the option to change the sequence setting to match the clip settings or not. FCP advises that one change the sequence to match the clip property, and so if I opt to change that sequence setting, when I look at the sequence specs the one thing that has changed is that now the sequence setting is DVCPRO HD 1080i60.  That is, it appears from this that despite having checked the box in Raylight to remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown, this has failed and clip is still interlaced over 60. And indeed when one looks at the clip properties the clip is identified as DVCPRO HD 1080i60.
What am I doing wrong and what do I do to get the pulldown properly removed and make my 1080pA shot footage progressive?  Or is there something fundamental I'm not correctly understanding?

    Hi Shane,
    Thanks for your reply.
I'm not disputing your suggested approach as I believe it is generally the tried and true one.
To be clear, I have done that as well (making sure the remove pulldown box is checked in the L&T interface) and from what I can tell yielded the exactly the same results… same clip properties vs.  sequence properties.
Either way I use the FCP easy setup to create the sequence format it recommends for 24pA footage which in the FCP browser shows among a long list of properties the following key ones  a video rate of 23.98 fps (ii) compressor setting of DVCPRO HD 1080p 30 and  Pixel Aspect of HD 1280x1080.
Whether I use L&T or Raylight, I get a clip with the same properties except the compressor setting being DVCPRO HD 1080i60. I assume that FCP identifies the mismatch because of the difference of that parameter.
Either way I have the same problem.
BTW, the latest version of Raylight claims to remove pulldown. In that pa's General Options the top section is dedicated to pulldown removal. One can set the target frame rate (23.976 in my case) and check the box of the removal. You can see a screen grab of the General Options on their web site (http://dvfilm.com/raylight/mac/index.htm).
    From their Support Doc:
    Pulldown Options
24PA pulldown, also known as 2:3:3:2 or "Advanced Pulldown", can be removed from 1080i/60 and 480i/60 (NTSC DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50) clips, if the "Remove Pulldown" option is selected. You can also use this option to remove 3:2 or 2:2 pulldown from footage recorded at 60P, or 2:2 pulldown from 50P. Be sure to set the Target Frame Rate in the drop-down selector box to 23.976, 29.97, or 25 fps as appropriate.
To answer your question, I can only hypothesize that when a file is processed through Raylight incuding the Pulldown removal instruction, the reulting Raylight .MOV file includes instructions to quicktime/FCP to remove the extra frames when the MXF file is played through it.
Possibly this feature does not work correctly however? I guess next I need to contact Raylight.
BTW to round out the picture for you:
My workflow into FCP 7/Studio 3:
    1. HPX170.. shooting 1080 24pA.
    2. Ingest files from P2 cards via P2 Card reader onto external drives using MacPro (OS10.6.8) workstation using Panasonic's P2CMS
    3. To avoid Log & Transfer and the creation of redundant massive scratch data, I apply Raylight v3 to:
    (a) re-wrap .MXFs into .MOV alias pointing to the original MXFs in sub-folder "Contents" and
    (b) remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown
    4. Import the .MOV alias files into a Clip Bin in FCP
    5. Use the FCP easy setup to create the recommended sequence for 24pA footage which in the FCP browser cites properties for that sequence as having  a video rate of 23.98 fps (ii) compressor setting of DVCPRO HD 1080p 30 and  Pixel Aspect of HD 1280x1080,
    6. I attempt to drag the clips into that sequence which is where i hit the mismatch.
Some key anecdotal observations for which I'm uncertain of the significance:
    1. I cannot perceive much difference in how the footage plays whether I convert the sequence to match the clip as per the above workflow (as FCP recommends) or conversely elect to force the clip into the FCP recommended sequence for 24pA footage
    2. footage viewed in the P2CMS Previewer (prior to pulldown removal) does appear to my realtively untrained eye as more interlaced (though not terribly so) than that viewed in FCP in either case immediately above
    3. Though the image of the 1080 footage is larger, that 1080 footage does not look as clean 720 pN (24p) footage shot with that same camera.
In the end I'm not sure if I have a misunderstanding, doing something wrong or whether everything is OK and as good as it gets considering what to me appears to be a degradation of the 1080 image in comparison with the 720 image.
    Any more thoughts?
