Importing iPhoto to Aperture, retouches done in iPhoto error

I seem to have a bit of strange problem with modified pictures after they are imported in A3.
I am using Iphoto 8.1.1 and have just bought Aperture 3. I decided to import all my iphoto pictures using the import iphoto library function.
I noticed that all images that had (in iphoto) been edited using the retouch function to reduce blemishes have problems in Aperture. The problem appears to be where the brush was used is now pixilated in that area and it just looks like a cluster of "noise". This only seems to happen when I used the import iphoto library. I tried to replicate the issue importing some of the same pictures individually and there was no issue. Than I made a new library tried to import iphoto library and same issue ones again. Exporting the picture out of aperture keeps this error. It's quite a worry as I have several hundred of these pictures and I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

You didn't do anything wrong at import. The master file is whatever you imported, be it jpeg or png or something else. Neither iPhoto nor Aperture actually change your import in any way. Its stored exactly as when imported. So if you wish to discard the iPhoto retouches and then import from iPhoto you can.
That is not what you wanted to do but I cant suggest a fix.

    I have tried searching the Aperture discussions for a solution, and have only found one useful topic from July 2006:

    However, it states this was a partial solution with Aperture 1.0 & iPhoto 6.0.1 or 6.0.2, and would be resolved in Aperture 1.1. We're up to Aperture 1.5.2 now, and I'm unwilling to uninstall iPhoto and revert back to 6.0 to try this solution. I have a SLOOOOW workaround (batch export original file at original size & format from iPhoto to temp hard drive folder, then import from file to Aperture), and have even tried working on an Automator script (not yet successful). Does anyone else have this problem?
    FYI, the symptoms are: in Aperture File > Import > iPhoto Library... Selected iPhoto Library folder, Store Files in their current location, and click "Choose". The popup window closes, but nothing happens. No spinning beach ball, no error message, nothing.

  • IPhoto and Aperture crash on launch, iPhoto and Aperture crash on launch

    Hi everyone.
    Recently when I launch iPhoto it crashes immeadiately and I have to 'Force quit' the application. I haven't been able to use it for weeks! I decided to purchase Aperture and when I open it I get the same problem! Both iPhoto and Aperture don't seem to want to work...
    I recently bought a new Nikon camera and imported some pictures and videos from that, so was wondering if that was causing the problem. I haven't been able to sync any more photos to my library since the problem happened- I have to manually drag and drop from Finder.
    Can anyone help? Here is a crash report from iPhoto.

    If it also hangs in another account then the issue is systemic. You'll need to reinstall
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
    2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
    A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
    If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
    If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
    If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.
    If that fails you'll be reinstalling the OS.

  • Do referenced iPhoto pics reflect editing done in iPhoto?

    I'm an Aperture newbie and am mulling the pros and cons of importing versus referencing my iPhoto library in Aperture. While I think I've got the basics of that question down, there's one question I have: if I reference (or, for that matter, import) photos from iPhoto, does Aperture see the edits that have been done in iPhoto (cropping, saturation, etc), or are the files the "masters"?

    When you edit a photo in iPhoto it makes a new file. You then have two files, the Original and the Modified version.
    WHen you import an iPhoto Library, or drag an Event or photo over from the browser, Aperture brings over both versons and stacks them.
    This is true regardless of whether you manage or reference the files in Aperture.

  • IPhoto to Aperture and back to iPhoto???

    I currently use iPhoto '09 for all my storing and editing of photos. I may want to use more advanced post-processing features on some of my photos (curves, brushes, presets, etc).
    Is it possible to export a handful of photos to Aperture, make my edits, then import them back into my iPhoto events?
    What are the steps I would need to do?

    Best advice: Pick one horse and Ride it.
    Aperture is not an editor. Like iPhoto, it's a Digital Asset manager, but a whole ot more powerful. It shares all of iPhotos strengths, and then some. However, like iPhoto, it cannot see or work on images that have not been imported to the database. Because of this it cannot be set as an external editor in iPhoto.
    So, to do what you want:
    Export the pic from iPhoto.
    Import to Aperture.
    Do what you will with it there.
    Export from Aperture - taking care to use the correct Export presets.*
    Import the processed pic to iPhoto.
    (* Note: you could use the iPhoto -> Show Aperture Library command and drag the image from Aperture to iPhoto, but this will only get your Aperture preview, not the actual file.)
    Note that this new Processed pic will have no relation to the original, it will be an entirely new photo as far as iPhoto is concerned.
    If you find that your images need more work, perhaps you've outgrown iPhoto and it's time to move entirely to Aperture - a painless process that preserves all of your work.
    If you're determined to stay with iPhoto then best get an actual image editor and use it as an external editor.
    In order of price here are some suggestions:

    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)

    There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
    You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Moved from iPhoto to Aperture, masters still in iPhoto file

    I have been using iphoto 9 up until a year ago, when I got aperture and now use that exclusively. I finally decided to export my iPhoto library into Aperture. Following some other suggestions, I imported the library and chose the option of storing the files in their current location. It seemed like everything came into the library nicely, so I then chose to consolidate the originals by moving the files.
    This took about an hour, and I assumed that everything was nicely moved and the iPhoto library should be empty. However, it seems the iphoto library is NOT empty. When I expand to show the content of the iPhoto library in Finder, there are still hundreds of files stored in the modified folder!
    In trying to discover if somehow copies were made, I expanded the Aperture library in Finder and discovered that none of my iPhoto pics (which I supposedly imported and consolidated) are stored under the Masters folder (only the images previously in Aperture are there). However, in the Aperture program, when I tell it to locate referenced files, it says there are none! How can there be no referenced files, if I am seeing entire projects/events(imported from iPhoto) that don't show up when I search for them in Aperture's library in Finder.
    Please help! I really just want all these pics in one place in Aperture!

    They were all under the June 2012 folder because that is when they were imported.
    Yes, that is how it is supposed to be: The date of the masters folder is the date imported, not the capture date.
    If you want to find a managed image in the "masters" folder quickly, add the "import session" metadata tag to the info panel (it is in the "Aperture brick of the presets in the "Edit" panel). Then you'll know, for which date to look in the "Masters" folder.

  • Any value in exporting iPhoto pictures and importing them into Aperture?

    I am moving from iPhoto into Aperture (moving my library again actually) and I know that iPhoto and Aperture can share the iPhoto library once it has been updated but I am wondering if there is any value (or even if it is possible) to export all of the iPhoto pictures and import them into a new Aperture library?  The reason that I'm asking this is that I know there are a lot of duplicates in my iPhoto library and I know that Aperture keeps only the original.  A couple of weeks ago I moved my iPhoto library onto an external LaCie SSD disk to use with my MacBook Pro but unfortunately corrupted that library and have to make the move again.  If there is any value in changing how I'm managing my library I should do it now.
    The library corruption was caused by me needing to leave for work and disconnecting the LaCie before Aperture was done sync'ing with my Flickr account.  When I tried to use Aperture the next day it was not able to repair/rebuild or use the iPhoto library at all.  I was unfortunately not backing up the external disk so I lost everything that I had done to clean up the library after the move.  One lesson that I learned was do not automatically sync with Flickr because doing this on an MBP via wireless with an external disk library can add a lot of delay to shutting down Aperture after an MBP wakeup.

    You can - an it will depend on what you want to achieve, if that will usefull. The way to do this would be by imprting your iPhoto library into an Aperture library using Aperture. But Aperture libraries and iPhoto libraries are now interchangable - both are photo libraries, and you could simply use your iPhoto library in Aperture and be done now.
    Some reasons why you would want to turn your iPhoto library into a library recognized as Aperture library by importing it into a new, empty Aperture Library:
    As long as the photo library will have the "Kind: iPhoto library", you will have to upgrade both iPhoto and Aperture always to the newest versions, or you will not be able to upgrade to a new library format, when a new release of Aperture comes - say (iPhoto '12 and Aperture 4); you will probably have to buy both new releases to continue working with your iPhoto Library in Aperture.
    If the kind of your library is "Kind: iPhoto library", it will appear in the Media Browser in the iPhoto section, not in the Aperture section, even if you are using it as your Aperture library. And before syncing with iTunes you will always have to open the Aperture library in iPhoto to point iTunes to it.
    Also, in Aperture you have more control about what will be included in your library - In iPhoto there is no way to specify the size and quality of previews. If you do not want or need previews, or you want smaller previews, or no Faces, it would make sense to recreate your iPhoto library by importing it into a new, empty Aperture Library.
    If you have more than one iPhoto Library, you can merge them into one big Aperture library to be able to browse all your images without having to switch between libraries. Aperture works very well with really big libraries. There is no need to split libraries.
    The reason that I'm asking this is that I know there are a lot of duplicates in my iPhoto library and I know that Aperture keeps only the original.
    That is what I meant by having more control on what will be stored. iPhoto will always store a very high quality preview of your edited version; in Aperture you can decide what the preview size and quality will be. But Previews and originals are not duplicates; they are not the same image.

  • Albums in Aperture vs Albums in iPhoto

    I am a bit confusing about the usage of Albums in iPhoto and Aperture 3.
    My understanding,
    iPhoto: adding a picture to albums is just to create links, there is always one physical copy of image, modifying the picture from an album will update all albums that have that picture. The concept of Album in iPhoto is more like a tag or a label?
    Aperture: adding a picture to albums is to copy physical image files, you may have duplicated images if a picture is added to several Albums. Change of a picture in an album will not update the same picture in other albums.
    Is my understanding correct?
    Since my iPhoto and Aperture use same the iPhoto library, how do they actually work together when browsing albums? iPhoto creates links but Aperture copies files.

    That is correct.  Versions are image files in limbo - just a set of adjustments describing the changes that need to be applied to the original to render the image as an image file. You create new versions by using the command "Photos > Duplicate version" or "Photos > New version from original". Or by setting the preference to create new versions when making adjustments.
    This paragraph in the manual is very misleading:
    When you drag an image into a different album, Aperture creates a duplicate version of the image and places it in the album. An image can be copied into any album in the same project or into albums in different projects. The destination album can be an album, book album, Light Table album, slideshow, or web journal or webpage album.
    Dragging between albums does not create new versions - it adds a link to the same version to the destination album. You can test that, by dragging an image to an album and flagging it in the album. You will see that all occurences of this version in all albums will be flagged. SO there is still only one version after dragging, but used in different albums.

  • Bizarre import problems in both iPhoto and Aperture

    Not sure how to explain this one .....
    Tried importing photos (raw) from Cannon D10 into Aperture. Failed to import a significant number and gave a message saying that the following files were not able to be imported - but the list was blank!
    So I tried the same import into iPhoto and although I still had a failure it was a significant amount less. So this time I tried just importing the failed files into iPhoto again and most of the failed photos went across with a small number still failing.
    So I tried the same technique with Aperture and sure enough some of the failed files made it but not many. same problem with the list of failures being blank.
    So I then imported the originally failed photos from iphoto into Aperture and all was fine.
    I'm down to 2 files that are still failing to get into iPhoto, but it seems that perseverance pays.
    There is nothing about the failed files that seems significant. They are frequently part of a series with exactly the same camera settings as ones that get across first time.
    Duh?

    With your camera connected, and both Aperture and iPhoto not running, try opening Image Capture. See how many images it displays for your camera, and then attempt to download them to a folder on your hard drive. I don't know why you're having issues importing using Aperture, but there are a number of things that Aperture can do and look for during an import that may be causing the problem. Image Capture is more basic in what it does, and may allow you to retrieve your missing images. If Image Capture is unable to get them, I'd try using a card reader.

  • Places not imported correctly from iPhoto into Aperture 3

    Hello,
    I'm a first time mac user and have recently installed Aperture 3. I already had an iPhoto library setup with all my events metadata filled out, including faces, places and event descriptions.
    Upon importing my iPhoto library into Aperture 3, the faces were copied over, but none of the places or event descriptions were imported.
    Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Is there a way to pull this across after the import, or should I just delete the aperture library and try again. Ideally, I'd like to avoid having to manually add all this information again!

    Quickly, what I found is that only the ones I did actual adjustments on brought over two images.  Images that were simply rotated, had "quick fixes" or "Effects" did not bring in two images.  More importantly, among the ones with adjustments that did bring in two images, the ones with the keyword  "iPhoto Edited" appear to be nothing more than iPhoto's 6MB JPEG Previews.  The master was a 25MB RAW image.
    I don't know why some users are experiencing doubles on everything, but I recommend caution in deciding which ones to remove or you may find yourself deleting masters and keeping previews.

  • Failed import from iPhoto to Aperture - what's the best solution?

    After some years of using iPhoto I recently upgraded to Aperture 3.2.2.  In connection with that and before opening Aperture, I bought a new external hard drive and moved my iPhoto library to it, following Apple's instructions on how to move an iPhoto library to a different drive.
    When I opened Aperture and was given the option to import my iPhoto library (of some 30,000 images), I chose, because I thought it was safer, to allow Aperture to access the images in my iPhoto library as referenced images rather than to store them in the Aperture library. 
    Unfortunately, the import was incomplete.  I decided to try to import again, in the same way, to see if that would result in my having all of the iPhoto images.  The re-import was also incomplete.  Worse than that, although I had told Aperture not to import duplicates, it imported for a second time many of the images that it imported the first time.  I now have in Aperture two separate large but incomplete iPhoto libraries.
    After this, I learned that before using an external drive with Aperture I should have formatted it to Mac OS Extended, which I had not done.  Other research I have done suggests that a surprising number of people have significant problems in trying to move iPhoto libraries to Aperture, but I have not found a case that addresses my problem.
    My idea now, subject to any advice anyone can give me, is to move the iPhoto library back to the Mac's hard drive (there is enough room, but little spare), delete everything on the external drive, format the external drive to Mac OS Extended, re-organise some of the iPhoto events, 'delete' the 'contents' of the Aperture library (without affecting of course the contents of the iPhoto library) and try again (possibly by importing the iPhotos this time on an event by event basis).
    Is this a good idea?  If so, I would be grateful for any suggestions about how to take these steps.  In particular, the step of deleting the contents of the Aperture library without affecting the iPhoto library.  Are there other better ideas?  If so, what?

    If there is nothing in your Aperture library that you need to keep, that is a good strategy.
    But some suggestions:
    Before you move your iPhoto Library from its current location (which will render the Aperture library useless, because it is referencing inside iPhoto), check if you accidentally have imported any images as managed into Aperture: create a smart album with the rule "File status is managed" at the top level of the library albums. This way you will see, if you have any images only in Aperture, that need exporting, before you delete the library.
    Also right now the best option to import from iPhoto into Aperture is by importing complete libraries, not single iPhoto events or albums. If you import Libraries, Aperture can combine the iPhoto Originals and the edited versions into "Master-Version" pairs and save considerable space.     I advise against referencing the masters inside iPhoto, for it is risky. If you open iPhoto and accidentally edit or modify the referenced master in any way, then the reference will be broken. It would be safer by far to create a backup copy of your iPhoto Library and to import the image files into Aperture or to relocate the imported files as referenced masters somewhere else, after you imported them.

    I store my photos in Aperture 3, but import them into iPhoto to create calendars, cards, etc. I usually work with RAW or high resolution JPG images in Aperture. However, when I import these into the new iPhoto '11, it automatically converts my RAW images into very low resolution images (e.g., 100-200k instead of at least 1-2MB). I cannot seem to find an option to change this. This was not a problem with the old iPhoto. To import, I start in iPhoto, then click "Show Aperture Library", then drag my photos/folder. I would like to have an option to import images as RAW files, or just high res JPGs.
    I know I can export my Aperture images to the desktop, then import them into iPhoto for a temporary fix, but that is such as hassle, especially since iPhoto and Aperture are supposed to work well together. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Aperture creates preview images that contain all the adjustments you've made to the master image. These previews are what is shared with other apps such as iLife or if you drag and drop an image out of Aperture to another app or the Finder.
    The size of the previews is controlled in Aperture Preferences. Open Aperture Preferences and click on the Previews icon at the top. In the bottom of this dialog there is a popup menu titled "Photo Preview". This is the setting that controls the size of the image Aperture shares with iPhoto. Change this setting to the size you want.
    But wait, you're not done yet. Changing this setting does nothing until a new preview is created in Aperture. If you right click an image in Aperture there is a menu item near the bottom named "Update Preview". But what you really need is "Generate Preview". Right click the image and then hold down the option key and you'll see "Update Preview" change to "Generate Preview". Choose "Generate Preview" and a new preview will be created using the new size setting you made in Preferences. You need to do this for each and every image you wish to share at the larger size. You can select multiple images before selecting the "Generate Preview" command to speed things up.
    Now when you share an image from Aperture to iPhoto the new larger file will be used. The advantage of smaller previews is your Aperture library will also be smaller but the trade off is what you get in other apps that are using your images.

    I'm making the move from iPhoto to Aperture 3.I'm new to Aperture 3 and want o make sure I am importing and saving correctly. So far, I have imported my library of events from iphoto to Aperture 3. I understand that for the most part, it makes sense to house this library on an external drive as "referenced files" vs within Apeture as "managed files." I'm not clear on exactly how to accomplish this set-up. Is this something I should have set-up when doing the initial import or can I move the files now? Once this is done, when importing new files, how do I import to Aperture 3 but save on external drive?

    In the olden days ( ) when hobbyists made their own telescopes from kits, everyone wanted a six-inch lens, and the kit makers shipped six-inch lens blanks.  Which the hobbyists used to learn lens grinding.  Which is arduous and requires skill.  Which the hobbyists didn't have until they'd ground that six-inch blank -- an expensive piece of high-quality material at the time -- into a lumpen flawed approximation of a good lens.  Then the hobbyists would contact the kit makers and ask for another lens-blank, so they could build their telescope.  At which point they would drop the project because the six-inch lens blank cost so much.  And much calumny was rained on the kit manufacturers.
    Now the kit manufacturers wanted to promote a hobby, and make, in addition to telescope kits, money (not calumny), so they together and separately hit upon the idea of supplying the hobbyist with _two_ lens blanks: a four-inch blank, and a six inch blank.  Nobody wanted a four-inch telescope -- but that's not what the blank was for.  The instructions read (I've shortened this part) "Grind the four-inch blank into the most perfect lens you can.  Check it and re-check it.  Now throw it out.  You likely now have the skill to grind the six-inch blank into a useable lens."
    Thus endeth our fable.
    The point, of course, is:  start small and gain skill before committing time and material to a task.  Port just a small sub-set of you photos into Aperture.  Experiment with it.  Try different workflows.  Think about how to best use the containers and organization tools Aperture provides.  Develop a long-term naming convention for files and Projects.  Work out a back-up strategy that is scalable and that you will stick with.  My specific recommendation for beginners is: don't worry about Referenced v. Managed at first.  Make all your Masters Managed.  When you have your four-inch Aperture Library all smooth and even, put the entire thing in the system trash -- and then you can start working on an Aperture Library fit for your photos -- one that will allow you to see far, and clear, for years.

    Well not completely by mistake, but regret that I did so. I'm not sure if I'll be using Aperture longterm. I need to check it out first and out of curiosity I imported my entire library from iPhoto int Aperture.. now I have duplicate photos on this computer. How do I delete the ones in Aperture, keep the ones in iPhoto while trusting that I'm not going to lose those precious pictures?
    Part 2: If I decide that I like Aperture, is it recommended that I reference the photos in iPhoto or go ahead and make new masters then delete the iPhoto library?

    You have done one of two things:
    1. You have imported the iPhoto Library while copying the files into the Aperture Library - note that's copy, your iPhoto Library is untouched.
    Trashing the Aperture Library will remove the copied files it contains.
    2. 1. You have imported the iPhoto Library while referencing the files in the current location (i.e.within the iPhoto Library)
    Trashing the Aperture Library will remove the references and leave your iPhoto Library untouched.
    There are no other places the files might be.
