Improved (vastly) Filing Capabilities

As it is today, LR has decent workflow capabilities from the point that you have filed images to work with. The issue is that there is not a decent filing system built into the product. Post-filing is mostly nailed, with some enhancements needed to ease of keywording and overall product robustness.
What is needed at the MINIMUM is a way to set the filename and sequence per folder. That way, as you add images to a folder, the filename is correct. This is probably the biggest pain I am having with 1.0.
Also, we should be able to rename when moving any existing filed image to a new folder. This is functionality in the system I have been using for several years.
All of my images are cataloged with a unique naming convention based upon a specific taxonomy. The folder structure mirrors this.
Here is an example of what I'm looking for:
Copy images from card to 2 different folders
Folder #1 = .\Birds\Long-Legged Birds\Boat-billed Heron\
Folder #2 = .\Birds\Long-Legged Birds\Great Blue Heron\
In folder #1 images should be named DBWBBnnnn ("n" = sequence).
In folder #2 images should be names DBWBHnnnn.
For me at least, this is the workflow I would like to see built in:
1. Load card or point to folder
2. Images are placed in a sorting place (I'll use the term "shoot")
3. Select keepers from the shoot (note a shoot could have hundreds of images)
4. Keyword keepers with an easier method (perhaps a floating window of keyword hierarchy with checkboxes?)
5. Right click on a library folder to FILE images to
6. LR knows the naming convention used in that folder and prompts for confirm/edit
7. Images are FILED to the library folder via a move and rename using the above info
This is what I have today and it works well and is fast. The primary benefit I have in LR as-is is the post-filing processing.
I for one would e happy to spend some time with the development team and whiteboard out some ideas.

i just tried the acrobat x ocr capabilities and it was very disappointing.  acrobat x ocr is not very accurate.
also, acrobat x doesn't format or select paragraphs properly, because each line of text is given a paragraph break--which interrupts text flow.  that means any copied paragraph text from acrobat x will require a lot of manual reformatting.
any chance acrobat can use the abbyy finereader ocr engine in the future or as a plugin?  finereader ocr is virtually perfect in ocr accuracy.  finereader also handles paragraph text flow the way it should be.

  • AEBS Distance-Improvements after Model A 1143?

My 2005 Airport Extreme Base Station, model # A1143, is starting to get unreliable on farther distances, while still ok up close.
Before I go out and purchase the current Airport model, does anyone know whether newer versions have seen an improvement in reach or speed (I use an IMac G5 pre-Intel machine and an older G4 iBook over a courtyard distance of ca. 70 ft with good results until recently)?
Also, would there be a compatibility issue using the current AEBS with OS 10.4.11 (I need to keep that older OS version, due to its OS 9 compatibility)?  Or can I save my money and get a used A1143, and would see the maximum reach possible, even with that version?
P.S.: I have done all firmware updates and tried soft and hard resets, but the transmission remains erratic.

This is somewhat of a good news / bad news situation.
The good news is that the newer versions of the AirPort Extreme provide up to a 25% improvement in distance capabilities due to an improved wireless antenna design.
The bad news is that the newer versions of the AirPort Extreme require AirPort Utility 5.5.2 for configuration. This version of AirPort Utility will only run on Leopard 10.5.7 or higher or Snow Leopard.
If you want to continue to use your current operating systems, the idea to use another A 1143 version would work if you configured the second AirPort Extreme "to extend a wireles network". In this configuration, the second AirPort Extreme would provide more wireless coverage to a remote area.
In general, the "extending" AirPort Extreme would need to be located where it can receive a good, strong signal to "extend". This means that it must be located about 1/2 the distance from the main wireless router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.

  • Do I need to up my rig for DVC Pro or XDCam?

    Hi, all.
I've been editing ACVHD shot with a Canon Vixia camcorder, which hasn't been much of a problem in terms of file sizes and processing.  We're looking to improve our video capabilities and I've started shopping for a decent pro-sumer video camera.  I'm looking mostly at Panasonic and Sony cameras and would like to know something about how the DVC Pro or XDCam formats work with AE and Premier.  I'm assuming that these formats will produce much larger files, requiring more storage and possibly more processing power.  At the moment I'm running a Dell Precision 490 tower with these specs:
    Windows 7 Enterprise - 64 Bit OS
    Processor: Intel (R) Xeon (R) CPU  5160 @ 3.00GHz (2 processors)
    4.00 GB RAM
    150GB HD
I've been running CS5, but an upgrade to CS6 is on the way.  Project files have been stored on a network server, so the small HD hasn't been a problem, but I'm usually writing and reading over ethernet.  Our finished videos usually run about 3-5 minutes, but occassionally we might do something running between 20-30 minutes.
    So, my questions:
    - will this system, as is, be able to handle prosumer video formats?  If not, what kind of system or external hardware would I need to bring me to at least entry level specs for this kind of work?
    - will working over the network be an issue?  If so, what will I need for internal/external hard drives?
    - are there other questions I should be asking?  What am I not considering?
I don't know how much money I can get for this, so I need to bring my bosses a number that won't scare the hell out of them.  I can probably bring the camera and assessories in for under $10,000, but I'm guessing that adding two new high-powered work stations might double that figure.  Not sure exactly where the line is.  Can anyone offer any insight or advice?  I certainly don't want to invest in a decent camera only to find I don't have the muscle to edit the footage.
My thanks in advance for any help or information.

Well, the deal is that I work for a State agency where I produce videos for public consumption via our YouTube channel as well as training DVDs and some other applications.  It took me about seven years to get any money to work with (used my own personal cameras until then), and even then was given only $3000 to buy a video camera, DSLR, lighting, and teleprompter.  After a three more years of whining, they've finally decided to "resource" our production effort.
I suspect I can wrangle about a $10,000 budget, but I'm hoping I might be able to get as much as $15-20,000.  This has to buy a camera, accessories, and anything else I may need for the foreseeable future.  Renting isn't really an option and whatever I get now is probably what I'll be working with for the next 6-10 years (if I don't get a better job or hang myself before then), so I want to invest in technologies or formats that have staying power.
That's why I'm asking whether I need faster machines to handle these pro and prosumer formats.  If I need to factor new workstations or other hardware into my calculations, I'll need to plan for that now.  From what I'm reading, it seems that it'll actually take less processing power to work with intraframe compression, but this may be offset by the much larger file sizes.
By the way, I really appreciate everyone's responses.  This community has unquestionably been my most reliable resource for over fifteen years now.

  • My Aperture Wish List for Apple

Hopefully someone on the Aperture development team will read this post at take away some useful information (if there is any here).
I am a long term user of Aperture (tested pre-release v1 and bought at release), have a significant investment of time in the product, and have been a vocal proponent of the product to many users that I can "influence". I purchased version 3.0 a few days after it became available after some quick testing with the demo version.
*First let me make a few comments*:
    1. Generally I like the product, but as many with large pre-existing libraries (45K+ images - 260GB) have encountered performance is less than stellar, especially when Faces is enabled. On the other hand I LOVE the high-end photo editing functionality (curves, brush on/off effects, GPS integration, etc).
    2. While using the program I have noticed that Aperture, and in particular, Faces makes apparently poor use of the multiple cores (4) in my new i7 iMac. Rarely do I see more than CPU usage even when doing what would seem to be really intensive things like Faces or even regenerating huge amounts of previews.
    3. Meanwhile memory usage.... not sure any more needs to be said, but you guys will really need to get a hold on this quickly. I'm waiting from my upgrade to 8GB to arrive in the mail. Hopefully this will improve things significantly, but to be honest I'm not sure it should really be necessary to get decent performance.
    4. Based on my experience with previous released of Aperture (1.0 and 2.0), I'm pretty sure that performance will significantly improve with the first major patch. I think this product is a diamond, but still in the rough.
    *Specific requests*:
    1. For users like me with BIG libraries that are well organized -- PLEASE, PLEASE allow the Face functionality to have much better integration with previously applied keywords and metadata. For instance I would like to be able to quickly search all of the images with unidentified faces (in the usual Face GUI) with certain keywords. So for instance, I could search for all of the images that are marked Betty or Joe in the un-ID'd faces and very quickly tag them. This would make it so much faster than doing it the current way where I might have over a thousand images of a particular person that have not been id'd, one at a time in a pretty much random order on one row of images. Likewise, it would be really nice to view all of the unidentified faces in one window and sort by, say to name one example, year.
    2. Not sure if this is my particular GPS unit (a Garmin handheld), but elevation data is not included in the GPS data integrated in the the image EXIF. This would be VERY useful, especially for outdoor and nature photography. For instance for many of the faculty that I work with, the elevation info would provide an amazingly useful tool to analyze their photography - for instance the lat, long of a photo of a plant are great, but to be able to sort by elevation (a key component of ecosystem) would be fantastic.
Cheers and keep up the good work!

I think Aperture 3 is a nice software. Apple have improved the DAM capabilities and localized adjustments are welcome.
However, I feel it still falls short on the RAW conversion part, specifically color correction and extraction of detail( compared to Capture 1).
I really want to like Aperture, but with todays high resolution cameras and higher demands from agencies, I just don´t want to compromise on the RAW conversion.

  • 7300GT performance on Mac OSX

I know this is a topic that has been raised in other discussion forums but I thought I'd raise it here.
I've been using my iMac for gaming for a while now and have noticed that the difference in graphics performance varies massively between OS X and a Bootcamp installation of Windows XP. Were the difference only slight I would attribute it to OS differences. It is not.
The performance of my NVidia 7300 GT on Windows XP allowed me to plat many of Valve's Source Engine games and many other great games, many of which one would think were not terribly demanding on a machine with the capabilities of the iMac 6.1, for example Torchlight or Minecraft. Since removing partition and going for a full Mac OS X drive I've realised that the iMac, or at least my particular model, are not designed to handle 3D graphics of any real complexity despite the machine being marketed as such.
To illustrate this I'll use the game "Torchlight" as an example. Under windows my particular iMac can run the game at 1920 x 1200 resolution (if I remember correctly.) I can max out its graphical settings and still run the game at a very high frame rate with no slowdown. Under Mac OS X under the same hardware I get <10 fps with screen resolution and all graphics settings at the lowest possible setting.
I hold out hope that OS X 10.7 will make some changes to the drivers or other factors that choke my poor iMac's gaming potential. Does anyone know if this is the case? Does Apple have any plans to improve the 3D capabilities of its older machines (at least bring them to parity with their Windows equivalent?) Should I just give up on my current machine ever running games well in OS X and start saving for a newer model or consider reinstalling Windows?

Sorry, but according to the ToU (on the right of every page), we are not allowed to speculate and since these are all user-to-user forums, we have no idea what, if anything, Apple is planning. You will have to wait until there is an announcement by Apple.

    Z zoozx ,
How could Microsoft come up in a forum about an Apple problem?  We have heard for years how superior Apple products are but we've never had as many headaches and problems with our Windows PCs over the years as we have with the Apple devices we now have.  My wife has the most recent iPad and my son has the most recent ipod Touch. Earlier problems notwithstanding, the iOS 7 upgrade was horrible and hard to imagine for a device where the company controls all of the hardware and the software with no variants.  As for Microsoft, I can say I have programmed on many various platforms from PolyForth to Unix to Windows and .NET.  I think what many Apple users don't understand about Windows is the sheer magnitude of variables in making the software and all upgrades work for such a myriad array of hardware platforms and usage scenarios across an enormous number of partners and small to large enterprises.  Anyone who has worked with a large integrated system can get a sense of this.  I work in healthcare and our HIS system is rated #1 in it's class (built on a derivitive of an old MIT OS) but due to it's vast integration capabilities and the variety of usage and setup variables from site to site, it requires daily dilligence in error reporting and resolution across all of it's applicaitons.  Microsoft Windows works and integrates with a massive number of other Microsoft client and server solutions that are used by the vast majority of enterprises in the world. It's no small feat to keep the Microsoft software stack in good working order.  Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but I wish we could past this ABM mentality that pervades online forums. I'm not sure if you've noticed but the Apple forums are jam packed with folks like yourself and me having problems with Apple hardware or software so I'm not sure where we can say one is better than the other, even if you could carve out some realistic benchmarks from which we could compare them on an even playing field.
With all the said, and I apologize but feel that the Anti MS anecdotes belong left long in the past, but any ideas on how we can get the supplied power cables to charge the devices they came with? I don't believe I've ever encountered a problem at the power cable level like this in which 2 cables are not working on 2 different devices. I think it points to software problems but as someone else mentioned about display settings, I'm not sure how your display settings affect the charging of a device in a non display mode. Would that suggest the thunderbolt cables are not capable of delivering enough charge to keep up with idle power consumption?

  • Need help moving photos to external drive

Hi, all--here's hoping one or more of you Aperture veterans can help.
Here's my situation: I'm not new to photography, but I'm new to Aperture. Just bought 3.3 and still getting to know what it can do. I'm an emigre from iPhoto, and one of the reasons I upgraded within Apple is that I was tired of the non-intuitive nature of PS Elements. I like to take pictures, not spend endless time in the dim glow of a screen digging through sub-menus for stuff, and from what I read, Aperture seemed more intuitive.
But now I've got a seemingly very basic problem that hours of poring over discussion threads and searching through the hundreds of pages of the manual has done little to address with any clarity:
How do I move (not just copy) older photos in projects to external drives, but in such a way that Aperture still keeps track of them, even when the drives are not connected? (The Aperture marketing I read/viewed clearly said Aperture could do this, and I'm running out of space on my MacBook Pro (15" from about 2008, running Lion) with lots of CF cards piling up.)
    Info that may help:
-I need to move not just original (imported into iPhoto directly from the camera) photos, but also those I've adjusted in Elements, then re-exported into iPhoto (I would say "and now into Aperture," but as you know, there's no longer an import process b/w iPhoto and Aperture).
    -I shoot mostly RAW.
-I have no idea whether the pictures are "Referenced" or "Managed" (for space reasons, I have yet to import any files directly into Aperture; all existing photos are from iPhoto, and if I was given an option when I set up Aperture, I don't now recall it).
-I have external drives with plenty of space to move older pix to (I also have multiple backups, including Time Machine, additional external hard drives, and DVDs)
Can somebody who knows how to do this safely please explain in clear language how to move photos as projects onto external hard drives so that Aperture keeps track of them via viewable thumbnails, even when the photo files themselves live on a hard drive that is not connected at the time?
    Thanks in advance!

    First things first:
You can easily check if an image is managed or referenced by ctrl-clicking on an image version and selecting "Locate referenced files...". If Aperture says "No Referenced Files", your originals are managed by Aperture and stored within the library itself, otherwise it should show you the location of the original, and give you some options to verify the references and so on. I don't know which method is used when importing from iPhoto.
Now, here's something you need to ask yourself:
Does it make more sense for you to keep the library on your laptop and the originals on an external drive, or does it make more sense to move both the library and the originals to the external drives?
In the first case, you can open and look at the thumbnails, but there's not a whole lot else you can do with your images when the external drive is off line.
If you have vast amounts of originals, spread across multiple drives, it might make sense to keep the library on your laptop and connect whichever external drive you need at the time. However, it might also make more sense to split such a huge library into mutiple libraries, stored with their respective originals (which could be either managed or referenced).
In my case, it makes sense to keep multiple libraries, with managed originals, but your mileage may vary.
Here's a tip that might help you decide: A small library is quicker to navigate and work with than a huge one, although performance has improved vastly with later versions of Aperture.
Once you have decided on the appropriate organization, you can start moving things around (after you've created the appropriate backups):
If your library contains all managed originals already, and you want to move the entire library off to the external drive:Simply drag and drop the library itself (using Finder) to the new location.
If your library use referenced originals, and you want to keep it that way, or your library manages your originals, and you want to start using referenced originals:
    Select all your images
Click on the File menu and select Relocate Originals...
Locate the destination for your originals, and pay special attention to the "Subfolder Format" and "Name Format". I'd suggest choosing "Project Name" and "Original File Name" for the two.
Click on Relocate Originals, and twiddle your thumbs while Aperure moves all your originals to the new location.
If your library uses referenced originals, and you wish to let your library manage the originals:
    Select all your images
Click on the File menu and select Consolidate Originals...
Decide if you want to Copy or Move the originals into the library. If you're running out of space, it might be best to Move.
Click Ok, and wait for the operation to complete.
(Optional) If you wish to move your entire library to the external drive, drag and drop the library to the new location.
I hope that answers your question.

  • PRS-T1 Firmware update request

    Good afternoon.
I recently (about a month ago) bougth two PRS-T1 readers (one as a gift) and I was very happy. I wanted a reader since I first knew of them and a T1 since it came out. I got a job as an intern engineer for the summer and saved to finally buy my gadget of dreams. I actually wanted to wait a little to see if a promotion came up because I lost the "free Harry Potter book combo", but I wanted to use the Reader for my school books and when the "almost free cover" promotion came up I inmediately ordered it.
Fast-forward a few weeks and I'm more than satisfied with my reader. Tablets are very common now, but everyone that sees the e-Ink screen working is thrown back in amazement. I carry it with me at all times (I hold it under my arm because I know keeping it in a bag has the risk of braking the screen) and my reading rate has improved vastly.
I've had the chance to find some areas of improvement on the Reader in the few weeks that I've had it with me and some of those were: being able to post in Facebook my reading status and maybe cite a phrase; and a native Evernote app, because while using the mobile site with the browser to view notes is actually neat, navigation and finding notes isn't, and neither is creating new notes. I supposed these were just remote dreams, knowing that just because you hope for, it doesn't mean a company will implement those features.
Well, imagine my surprise. New reader (it looks very similar to the T2 so no regrets there) with specifically the two functions I spent a month thinking would be great to have. Maybe they were so obvious it was inevitable, but still. Additionally, it seems too soon to drop support of the T1 after less than a year into its lifecycle.
So this is my request to Sony from a true fanboy: Please release a firmware update for the PRS-T1 to add the Facebook and Evernote features. I'd also suggest to remove the Google Books button and change it for one of the above or even a Wikipedia dedicated button, since I discovered that using the Reader is the best device for hours-long Wiki reading sessions.
Please consider my humble request. Maybe it turns out to be very easy to get done. Maybe not. Either way I'll keep enjoying the best e-reading experience with the best e-reader in the market and for that I'm very thankful.

    Hello Rarsiii,
Welcome to the Users Discussion Forum. We will forward this to our Reader team and thank you very much for sharing your thoughts.

  • Burning Blu-Ray?

I'm about to order a Blu-Ray internal burner for my Mac tower.
I heard a rumour that Apple is not necessarily friendly to Blu-Ray. Maybe I've heard wrong.
What app would you recommend for creating Blu-Ray disks? What is the official Blu-Ray codec, and can I render this codec from FCP (latest version) or Compressor?
And then will DVD Studio Pro do the burning?
    All ears,
    Ben

FCP 7 can burn directly to Blu-ray from your HD timeline.
Compressor (3.5) can compress and burn directly to Blu-ray or save Blu-ray files to your HDD.
You can choose MPEG or H.264. While H.264 was added after the original spec, and some of the VERY early players may not play them, H.264 looks gorgeous compared to MPEG at the same bitrate.
However, both FCP 7 and compressor 3.5 are extremely limiting in the menu options you can have on your disc. They are the basic necessities and about the minimum they could get away with and still claim BD authoring. It looks like they were targeting studios dailies more than final production discs.
Alternatively you can use Adobe Encore CS3/CS4/CS5. Each version has progressive improvements to the capabilities, including pop-up menus and multi-screen menu systems.
    Another alternative is Toast 10.
I really wish Apple would get their act together on Blu-ray - both for mastering AND for playing on the Mac itself. It's no good Steve jobs whining about it - get off the dime Steve and make the Mac play BDs, and get a DVDSP like program for BDs.
I already upgraded to FCP7, but would willing pay double the update cost (or more - much more) to get a GOOD Blu-ray authoring app as part of the Final Cut Suite.

    Hi,
    SD Process Flow
the sales documents you create are individual documents but they can also form part of a chain of inter-related documents. For example, you may record a customeru2019s telephone inquiry in the system. The customer next requests a quotation, which you then create by referring to the inquiry. The customer later places an order on the basis of the quotation and you create a sales order with reference to the quotation. You ship the goods and bill the customer. After delivery of the goods, the customer claims credit for some damaged goods and you create a free-of-charge delivery with reference to the sales order. The entire chain of documents u2013 the inquiry, the quotation, the sales order, the delivery, the invoice, and the subsequent delivery free of charge u2013 creates a document flow or history. The flow of data from one document into another reduces manual activity and makes problem resolution easier. Inquiry and quotation management in the Sales Information System help you to plan and control your sales.
    Transaction Codes:
    Inquiry - VA11/VA12/VA13
    Quotation - VA21/VA22/VA23
    Sales Order - VA01/VA02/VA03
    Delivery - VL01N/VL02N/VL03N
    Billing/Invoicing - VF01/VF02/VF03

  • BO Explorer on 4.0

    Hi,
As we know, BO explorer supports only .unx universes.
InfoCubes and BEx queries are not supported for.unx universes.
So, the only way to use BO Explorer is to create a relational database connection for .unx.
This is still a problem since we can't create a connection based on BEx queries.
Considering the SAP's strategy about improving the connection capabilities of BO to BW structures. Isn't it a big conflict?
Especially when you think that it was quite easy on XI 3.1 to create a .unv on OLAP or Bex and then use them to create information spaces for BO Explorer.
I would totally understand, if we could use BICS connections to create information spaces but it's also not possible.
    Regards,
    Erdem

    Hi,
this question has been asked and answered here before: http://scn.sap.com/thread/3271116
    Please refer to Notes
1704584 - Cannot use Explorer with Microsoft Cube (MSAS)
1559221 - Are UNX OLAP Universes are supported in Explorer
    4.x?
That said, since 4.0 SP06 / 4.1  it is now possible again to index on OLAP .UNV (BAPI-based MDX universes, ontop of BW BEx queries)  - but this doesn't apply to you.
