In need of a laptop

I am going to be going back to school and I was thinking about purchasing a laptop. I have been looking but don't know exactly what to look for. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money but I want a reliable computer. What would be a good laptop to get? I would also be using it for the internet and for my ipod. I don't know what to look for in terms of speed...thanks!!!!!!!

hi diana, and welcome to the forums.
from your post, it sounds like a lightweight notebook that allows you to take notes on campus as well as connect to the web would be ideal. it also sounds like you don't put too much of a focus on PC gaming or heavy video creating/editing, so that should help narrow down what machines you may want to consider.
understandable that you're trying to keep the cost low, but do you have any specific budget in mind?
here are a few machines to consider:
* asus U81A-RX05: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9366562&type=product&id=1218092151327
* hp dv4-1435dx: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9370548&type=product&id=1218093001786
both of the machines are very portable: they have 14" screens, good battery life, and they're no more than 5 pounds each. at the heart of each laptop, you'll find an intel core 2 processor accompanied by 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard for storing all of your notes and homework as well as any music and pictures that you have.
you may also want to check out the next class line of PCs here: http://bit.ly/nextclass . these machines are built with students in mind - anti-virus protection, microsoft office, and good battery life.

    Hi,
    >>it is necessary to link Domain GPO to Site?
Usually, GPOs should be not be applied to sites. It is usually applied to domains and organizational units.
Regarding group policy on sites, the following artilce can be referred to for more information.

There are several ways to apply group policy settings to specific computer accounts. Firstly, if laptops and desktop machines belong to different OUs, you can just simply link the specific GPOs to the corresponding OUs. Secondly, if both laptops and desktop
machines belong to the same OU, you can use security filtering or WMI filtering to apply GPOs to specific computer accounts. Thirdly, if the computer settings are configured under Group Policy Preferences node, you can utilize item-level targeting to
apply the GPP settings to specific computer accounts.
Regarding security filtering, WMI Filtering, and GPP ILT, the following blog can be referred to for more information.

I need recovery for laptop Pavilion dv6-1235ee , I need the link for the recovery or send recovery cd to my mail

If you have the recovery partition intact on your notebook, you can just press F11 during boot and it will take you to the recovery mode. Just follow the instructions to perform a recovery and it will reset your notebook back to the factory settings.
In case you do not have the recovery partiion, I would advise you to go through the following document which will help you resolve the issue:

You are not going to be able to recover the music from your iPod to you new laptop.
It doesn't work that way. It only move music from you iOS device to your computer.
You can download what you purchased from Apple. Anything else is lost.

  • In need of a Laptop with ExpressCard Slot

    Hi,
I was trying to use the search for finding a laptop with ExpressCard® Slot, but had no luck with that.
If anyone can recommend me a couple of models that carry this port, I'll be grateful.
Due to the hardware I need to use this is a must. No substitution yet for this port.
Thanks in advanced for your input.
    Best regards.

There appear to be some Tecra and Portege models.

  • I want to connnect my early 2012 MBP to my LG HDMI. I have the HDMI cable. What connector do I need for the laptop?

Please give me the name of the connector for the laptop. Is it a "display port"?

Note that you'll find two alternatives: one that has a TB plug at one end and a little box with a female HDMI jack at the other or a cable that has male TB and HDMI plugs at both ends. First one gives you the flexibility of using a standard HDMI cable of whatever length you need, at an extra cost. Second simplifies things and eliminates one connection (and possible point of failure), but may limit how far away you can place the computer from the display.

  • HELP !! advice needed to connect laptop to router

hi all, i want to connect a router to a single laptop..no desktop or any other pc ..just single laptop..before i go ahead and buy a router...how easy is it to do ?...what cables or other connections may i need ( if any)..it is quite a modern laptop with in built wireless connection..running winxp etc etc...any help or advice would be really most appreciated..many thanks in advance

What kind of wireless card do you have in your computer?  wireless g?  wireless n?
The first question you need to decide is this:  Do you want a wired network or a wireless network?
    Advantages of a wired network:
    Easier to setup and maintain.
    Better security.
    In some cases, faster speeds.
    Cheaper.
All your network devices (computers, printers, etc.) must be wired to the router.  In some cases, this means you must run a cable through your walls.
    Advantages of a wireless network:
Your computer can connect to the Internet wirelessly, so you can move about your home or apartment without needing an Internet wire connected to your computer.
If your computer and router are in different rooms you can connect them wirelessly (you usually do not need to run a network cable through your walls).
Your network devices can connect to the router by wire or wirelessly.
So, do you want a wired network or a wireless network?
Also, since you are just starting out, I would suggest you go to Linksys.com , to the "Learning Center" and take some of the tutorials.  This will help you understand some of the basics of networking.

  • Need advice on laptop CPU and RAM

    Hello,
I've just started a Multimedia and Design education, where I will be working with Adobe cc - mostly Photoshop, Illustrator and inDesign. I'm looking for a portable laptop to use while in school, and I have found one with a good IPS display and SSD.
My question is, if I should I go with an dual core i5-4210M (2,6Ghz) or a quad core i7-4712MQ (2,3GHz)? - and If I should go for 8GB of RAM or 16GB?
I have googled for hours now and people seem to have very different opinions on what these programs need in order to run good. I realize that more is better, but I want to know if it's necessary.
At home I have a stationary PC with a 4790K, 16GB RAM, GTX 980, SSD +HHD which I will be using for all my work when at home. So the laptop I'm looking to buy is "just" my placeholder while in school - Not 8 hours a day as a job, but as a learning tool that will be sufficient and get the job done when I'm not at home.
I'm really hoping some of you could shed some light on what I should be going for here.
    Thanks.

  • Help! Need a good laptop for school and editing. Budget is around $800 (Canadian).

I'm looking for a laptop for around $800 Canadian, I'm starting a science and technology program in high school so I will need decent graphics performance for editing and 3D modelling. My budget is a bit flexible but only by around $100 for a significantly better product. I've had my eye on the Lenovo y40-80 but some people say it's great and other call it a dissapointment. I was thinking about either ASUS, Lenovo, or MSI.  Any suggestions would be helpful, Thanks.

I own an ASUS and a MSI laptop.  A little advice for you.... Visit the store and see if you can play a YouTube video.one laptop display appears dimmer and not so brightthe other laptop does a very poor job of rendering colors (especially with skin)Can't say this is a problem with today's newer machines.  But it was something that has troubled me.

  • Need help with Laptop decision

I am sorry about the length of this post, but I really need help. I am trying to buy a laptop and what should be a really exciting prospect (buying my first laptop) is turning into a nightmare that just about had me in tears over the weekend.
My budget is not big - 600 absolute max, but would prefer to spend a bit less than this.
I do mainly office work (Word, Excel, Databases and PowerPoint) and also some Photoshop work. I also play a strategy game called Caesar 3. I very much want to load my copy of XP on the machine, either replacing Vista or as a partition.
Looking through the models available in my price range and looking up the benchmarks I have found the following:
Most have processors like the Intel T5250 or T5450 or the AMD TL 58, which are all benchmarked as ok, but not great. A few have the AMD TL 60, which is a bit better and one or two have the Intel T7200 which is even better.
On the bulk of the machines the graphics cards are either the ATI Radeon Xpress X1200 or the Intel GMA X3100. Both of these are benchmarked as not great and the review says that they cannot handle strategy games. A few of the models have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 or HD 2400XT and one or two have the HD 2600.
The problem is that the models that have the better processor have the lower rated graphics card and those that have both don't have XP drivers, as far as I can see.
Don't mind a 15.4'' screen (although the 17.1'' would be very nice to have) and would like a reasonably big hard drive (160 +). I will be getting 2GB of RAM.
I am at my wits end. I don't want to buy a computer that will end up taking a minute or more to refresh a screen when you have more than two things open, or that you have to keep rebooting to get it to work. I want to be able to play my one and only game (Caesar III) which is a strategy game and I want to be able to work in Photoshop and perhaps have one or two other things open at the same time, like a website perhaps.
Please help me, anyone. Am I asking for the impossible? I can't get hold of an email address for Toshiba to try to get clarity from them on the issue of drivers and whether they will be made available in the future.
Then there is of course the retailer issue as each retailer only stocks a limited number of models and one has to choose between those.
I hope someone can help me!!

    Hi
The problem is that you want to buy an all-round notebook but dont want to spend much money.
Additionally you want to change the OS to XP and need the XP drivers.
Well this is very hard decision buddy ;)
A notebook for gaming equipped with the power full graphic card cost a little bit more as 600
So you have to take a decision; Do you want to buy an gaming notebook and spend more as 600 or you will take an notebook which is great for a common usage like DVD watching, working with Office software, etc
The Cesar game is not known to me but I presume it doesnt need a high performance graphic card and it should run on a normal notebook too.
I think a Satellite a200 is not bad choice for you because some A200 notebooks were delivered with the Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor and a NVIDIA GeForce graphic card.
And very important is that all XP drivers were already released ;)

  • Need Help uprading laptop.

Well I currently have a HP G50 104NR laptop and I am starting to notice its limits. I am looking for a reasonably priced upgrade and
am looking for recommendations. Here are my laptops current specs from HP's website.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01607613&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_US...
Keep in mind this is a family laptop so there are several users and I would like to play games on it like cod4.

I hate to say it but the only upgrade you will be able really do is a memory upgrade and that will not help you play COD4 with that Intel 4500 Graphics chip.
If you want to play COD4 then you will need to buy a laptop that is geared towards gaming.

  • Need opinions for laptop temperature!

Good day guys! I am really concern about my laptop temperature. Normal temperature is around 50-60 degrees Celsius, while in gaming around 80-85 but it reached 93 degrees already. I am using a cooling pad and my electric fan is directed towards my laptop especially while gaming. Are these temperatures still healthy? I am using real temp, core temp and Toshiba PC Health Monitor to monitor my processor and GPU temperature.
My laptop is Toshiba Satellite L745, Intel Core i5-2430, 1Gb nVidia GT GeForece 525M, 8gb ram, 32-bit Windows 7. I just bought this laptop last December 2011. I need opinions guys! Thanks in advance!

This is the second post in 2 days dealing with overheating Toshiba Laptops while playing a game.  It doesn't look like the Fans are moving enough air to keep the CPU and GPU cool enough during extensive video operations.
90 degrees Celcius is way too hot for processors...It doesn't take long to figure out that the Toshiba design is flawed and is very suspect to overheating. Heat will slowly kill the MotherBoard components.
You probably are NOT suffering from symptom/cause number 1. but double check anyway...the cooling pad may be sucking in MORE dirt/dust than the normal laptop cooling fan and then the dust will collect FASTER at the heatsink cooling fins. You may also be able to increase airflow with solution 2. to solve the overheating problem...
    1. I recommend turning the Laptop Off and unplugging all accessories. Get a good Flash light and look down into the CPU HeatSink Cooling Fins (where the HOT air comes out) You should be able to see inside the area unrestricted. If you see a bunch of Grey Matter, it's more than likely clogged with dust bunny's restricting the airflow.
Get a can of compressed AIR. Get a vacuum cleaner and hose...no attachments. Turn the laptop upside down on a flat surface so that you have access to both the intake fan vents and the exhaust vents. (facing towards you)
I have a technique where I hold the vacuum nozzel direcly flat against the FAN IN-Take vent--with the vacuum on--I use the compressed air in 2 second bursts to clean out each of the narrow heat-sink vanes. (Not the open spaces in the plastic case, but each of the metal cooling fins)
Try to not use too much compressed air as it does have a tiny amount of liquid in it.  You could also wait 30 or so  minutes to let it dry.
It's a quick fix, but the alternative is to completely taking apart (on most Toshiba's) to get access to the heat sink and CPU.
    2. If you don't see any dust or any more dust after blowing it out and it is still overheating...you could try what I did below...
I saw a youtube video where a guy rigged up an external 80mm fan with a shroud and duct tape. He powered the 12VDC fan with a battery, but I used one of those Variable Voltage Adapters...set it 12VDC and connected it with Aligator Clips. It didn't look pretty, but the external fan kept the laptop ICE cold.
"My comments are my own reality" Consider these in addition to other sources. I only know what I know.

  • Schematic needed: 1905-S301 laptop

My 1905-S301 was in a lightning strike.  The power supply died and was replaced.  After replacement the laptop appeared to be okay.  The battery charges fine and the unit appears to work correctly. I upgraded the hard drive afterward as I'd intended to do so anyway.  While surfing the net on a wired connection (downloading drivers, et cetera) I noticed that downloads were taking longer than they should, and even hanging up.  I noticed that the power supply seemed warmer than it should have been, so I figured I'd disconnect it.  When I did the download sped up.  Plugged the power back in, and the download slowed back down again.
I have the "maintenance" manual for the unit and tore the unit down to the system board (a BTR20  LA1391, rev. 1A).  I inspected the board under a high-powered magnifier and saw no obvious signs of failure (cracked components, burned traces, and so on).  I'm guessing there is a component in the ethernet circuit that is bad, and want to attempt a repair.  Because of cost and the unit's actual value nowadays, the laptop will not be taken in to a service center for repair--I am capable of performing the repair myself.  But, I need a schematic for this unit and the maintenance manual doesn't include one.
How can a get a circuit schematic for this unit?
