In-video brightness

I don't known if people hve had this issue but I think the Video section on the iPhone or iPod touch should have an option to increase the brightness while watching a video withoubhaving to exit to the settings menu and then back to the video.

Video brightness problems with mini hooked up to TV

I have a Late 2012 Mac mini that I use as a media hub in my living room. It's hooked up via HDMI to a Pioneer amp and then the display is piped to a Samsung TV. When watching content purchased through the iTMS in full-screen mode, the brightness changes every few seconds from what looks to be "normal" to fairly dark and muddy. The content is watchable, but the constant change in brightness does get annoying. If I watch the content inside the iTunes window, I don't get the strobing; it's only when watching the video Full Screen. I've looked through the settings on the amp and the TV but haven't found one that affects the problem I'm seeing. Has anyone else seen something like this? Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot it?

It seems that I finally have found a solution to this problem. It is not perfect, but at least it stops the screen from changing the brightness randomly when watching movies from my mac mini.
The solution is to go into settings, accessability and turn on switch control. I hide the switch control as much as possible in one of the corners down to the left or right corner and makes it as small as possible. It seems it must be active on order to stop the screen from flickering, so I can live with that.
As I said, it is not perfect because a small corner of the switch control will be visible while watching movies, but it is better than the flickering.
If anyone has another or better solution to this problem I´m all ears:)
Have a flicker free afternoon all who have had this problem on mac´s or other iOS devices.

Difference in video brightness/contrast across viewer applications

I am using FCP->Color>FCP roundtrip to grade Red footage. After I grade the clips in Color and send them back to FCP, I see a difference in brightness/contrast of the graded clips when playing in FCP. And when I export the final output to quicktime and play it in quicktime player, I see further difference in brightness and contrast. Essentially the clips appear darker when played in QT player. Now I am confused as to which application is showing the correct brightness/gamma level? Is there a way to make all the applications play the video at same/true brightness/gamma? Any insights would be highly appreciate. Thanks!

There is a distinction between PCIe-based GPUs and I/O cards that you have to be aware of. COLOR's user interface, render/scopes and output are split between the two. A graphics processor handles the user interface (PCIe is better, application won't run on on-board integrated or AGP), and actual grade values for judgement are based on a PCIe HD-SDI I/O card like AJA Kona3, or Blackmagic (Intensity?) which are NOT graphics cards, they are video interfaces.
For GPUs, if the application is running, that's a good indicator. However, preferred cards have been evolving over the past 5 years. My first system was configured with a Quadro 4500FX which was a total waste of money. I deliberately chose an ATI X1900XT for the next tower, which was a significant improvement. My third MacPro is running fine with the default ATI 2600HD, which is as plain vanilla as you can get. Some users report speed advantages with the newer 4870 series, but I fail to see significant differences -- COLOR in its current delivery will never deliver "real-time" preview playback on any card, and it still takes a very long time to render, in comparison with some other grade offerings. Fourth machine, I'm still deciding, but it would be great if Apple got the FX4000 thing happening, and I'll get to that.
Nvidia does suffer from some bit-depth processing issues in that it does not directly support 10-bit codecs, but can be switched into the more intensive "float" mode. It also has some other transient issues.
Looking outside Apple COLOR, consider that Blackmagic Resolve ("DaVinci") is predicated entirely on nVidia's CUDA-processing technology and is restricted to implementation on 2 or 3 very specific cards, as opposed to the FCP-centred, but ATI/AJA-leaning Apple solution, which, although somewhat restricted, is 90% more likely to run on almost anything PCIe that you can stick into a MacPro. However, the color science and cross-platform (AVID support, for example) that DaVinci offers makes it very tempting, and that's why I'm paying a lot more attention to nVidia these days.
If you are looking for HDSDI PCIe cards, then AJA, with IO, Kona3, and so on definitely has the edge and can extend capabilities up to and beyond 2K processing, but many users select other solutions that suit their individual needs -- not everyone delivers theatrical Digital Cinema or needs to.

AME makes all exported videos brighter

Hi, I'm trying to export a project from Premiere Pro CS6 to Adobe Media Encoder to render but I've noticed that all of my videos are coming out over bright, I can see the difference in the preview window in Media Encoder as the video is rendering, it's much much brighter than the original Premiere Pro preview.
I'm outputting to H264 Quicktime, I realise that there are gamma issues with watching videos in quicktime and this is not that, even in other players the video is far brighter than occurs with the gamma issue in quicktime.
Added: Just outputted it in mpg format and the brightness reflects the Premiere preview brightness is still being output above it's original brightness in Premiere. Also tried exporting in Sorensen 3 and got the same brightness issue, so it may just be something specific to .mov files....although I haven't ever noticed it before and I've rendered out many many videos with the same settings in the same way and they all came out fine.

yup, totally understand checking it on a calibrated tv, however this is something that is changing the brightness fundamentally somehow between Premiere and Media Encoder and before a couple of days ago I've never had an issue with it, all my exports were going over to Media Encoder with no differences between what I could see in Premiere and what was rendered out in Media Encoderl. Now, right in the preview in Media Encoder I'm seeing a massive difference from what it looks like in Premiere, everything comes out brighter and more washed out than I've ever experienced before.
.....I've just checked an older project from last week and done a test render to the usual h24 quicktime settings I use and it's come out looking the same as it does in premiere, so it would appear to be something in the specific project itself which is causing the brightness blowout.

Encore MPEG2 Transcode raising video Brightness

I am still using Encore CS3 and have recently ran into issues with people not happy with the mpeg2 transcode changing the color and brightness of their original master and captures. I usually bring in ProRes because I have found it gives us the best quality results and have compared my ProRes capture to my Bluray transcode and the BluRay is definitely lighter than my source video. Just looking for any technical advice on why this is and wondering if that problem could be avoided going to H.264 instead?

I use Edius as my main Editor and have seen the same gamma shift if I use Adobe Media Encoder CS4 to encode an AVI file.
If I encode to Mpeg-2 or AVC from the Edius timeline, the blacks and mids are the same on my production monitor and from the Blu-ray on my 1080p plasma.
If I render out an AVI then encode to Mpeg-2 or AVC in Adobe, the blacks and mids have a milky appearance viewing from Blu-ray on the same setup.
I don't have an answer, but wanted to you to know you are not alone.

Hmm, select the layer in the timeline, go to the effects menu, scroll down to color correction, in that menu choose brightness and contrast and adjust the brightness to your liking. It will only be applied to that layer.

Ipad video brightness flare

I have recently purchased the new iPad (retina display, lightning port) when watching video with the auto brightness on or off I notice the screen brightness fades up and down quite regularly almost like a pulse if u will.
The best way to notice it is if your watching a video in widescreen with the ipad horizontal cover up the actually letterbox video so you are just looking at the black bar at the top, the colour of the black tends to gradually get lighter and then goes dark again I also notice this in the video itself but its easier to identify it by using the above method.
It can be really quite annoying I was just wondering if anybody else experiences this? Or is my ipad is dodgy? Another user posted about this problem back in march according to the post he actually swapped his iPad & the new iPad did the same thing, the discussion them ended seemingly unresolved.
It may depend on the length of time you are watching video before it happens I've also noticed it tends the happen more frequently when watch a video cutting between light and dark scenes.
All help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had the same issue. When watching video on the retina iPad mini, whether in Safari or in the native Videos app or in a third party app, the screen brightness fluctuates depending on the brightness of scene it he video...it's most observable when you look at the black space / black bars above and below the video....when the video scene is a bright scene, the black bars suddenly become brighter...if it's a very dark scene, the black bars fade to a very dark black. The brightness fluctuation can be extremely annoying when scenes change in tv shows and movies, especially rapid changes in scenes.
Also, if the scene is bright and I exit the video app, as soon as it returns to the homescreen, all of the colors are completely washed out and the true color / brightness gradually returns.
I hope more people report this, as I've certainly seen enough people mentioning this issue on discussion boards all over the internet. I know I have reported it. I've also returned the retina iPad mini five or six times because of this issue as well as a different glitch regarding screen getting stuck in a particular orientation, and also getting stuck in the closing animation when an app minimizes. So far, all of these issues persist with each new retina iPad mini.
VERY disappointed.
I did work for Apple as a tech support advisor. These are issues that I never personally experienced prior to iPad 4. If I had never purchased so much content through iTunes / the App Store, I would at this point simply wash my hands with Apple mobile products and never buy another one. Unfortunately, I'm kind of locked in at this moment because of all of the Apple exclusive content I have purchased over the years.

Adjust video playback brightness on-the-fly...?

I've just moved over from a 5G iPod to an iPhone, and had a question about a certain aspect of video playback...
I watch a lot of video on my iPod (now iPhone), and I'm a stickler for saving my battery life, so I always turn the screen brightness right down to its lowest viewable point when watching video.
I also watch video in bed, with the lights off, so turning the brightness right down still makes the videos perfectly viewable.
Sometime though, of course, I have to turn the brightness up for scenarios where I'm in a brighter environment.
The way to do this on the 5G iPod is, at any time when watching a video, hit the centre button twice (once takes you to the scrubber) and then scroll left or right for dimmer or brighter. Easy. Job done. And you can see the results right there and then, so you can adjust it to just right.
Now unless I'm mistaken, there's no similar way of doing this on the iPhone, and that you can NOT adjust video brightness on the fly...
The only way to adjust brightness is, while watching a video, to go to Home > Settings > Brightness > Drag it > Home > iPod > Video.
Surely everyone can see that's a MUCH more laborious way of doing things!?
Even then, you can't be sure you got the brightness setting adjusted correctly, because a bright vivid animation, like The Simpsons, is much more visible and clear on a low brightness setting than, say, TV shows of Magnum P.I. with their 80's "converted-from-video" feel.
And believe me, I know, because those 2 examples are real-world scenarios for me.
And before anyone says it, yes I DO know about the "Auto-Brightness" setting, but I've tried it, and 9 times out of 10 it's too dim for my liking in a brightly-lit room (especially on the Magnum P.I.'s) and it's too bright in bed with the lights off (especially on the Simpsons)!
So I suppose if I'm making this post a question, it would be:
Is there no method of changing video playback brightness on-the-fly, while the video is still playing on-screen?

Mac Pro and DVI to Video Adapter

I just received a new Mac Pro with a GeForce 7300 card and was planning to use it in part to display video on a set of TV monitors using the Apple DVI to Video Adapter. Try as I might I have not been able to get the computer to recognize a TV regardless of the DVI port and using both S-Video and RCA. I now see that in Apple's store the converter is classified as Requiring a "MacBook Pro, Mac mini or Power Mac G5 with DVI port". Not sure if there's any way around this. The adapter has worked fine in the past with both a Mac Mini and a G5 tower. If anyone knows a possible workaround or if an updated adapter is forthcoming I would appreciate the information.

There are VGA to S-Video converters but they cost more than the Apple adapter. Here is one. Probable a bit fancier than you want. There are others.

The Apple adapter is cheap because all the work is being done in the video card when it detects the adapter. The video card outputs the S-Video brightness and color, and the composite video on the DVI pins that would normally be used for analog red, green, and blue, using the A/D converters normally used for a CRT. The adapter just sends the signals to different connectors. The adapter won't do anything with a card that wasn't designed to output TV video.

Videos darker in iTunes than Quicktime Player

I've bought a few movies from iTunes and imported a few from other sources.
Whilst watching one purchased from iTunes (There will be blood) I felt the video was very dark. I did a little experimenting and have discovered that videos play considerably darker in iTunes than in Quicktime Player (the AV controls in Quicktime are set to the default so its not because I've adjusted the brightness manually).
I find this really confusing as I would have thought iTunes and Quicktime Player would be using the exact same framework/code to display the video. I can't see any way in the iTunes UI to adjust the video brightness. Am I missing something? Is it perhaps something to do with Colorsync/Monitor profiles. Perhaps one app is compensating with the color profile and the other is ignoring it?

HELP! I can hardly see my online videos!

Flash Player does not control the video brightness. This
brighness and contrast is first determined when the video is
produced, and after that through monitor / screen settings. Is this
a laptop?

Outputting ProRes causes brightness shift

Hi, got a curious problem when exporting to regular ProRes 422 PAL from FCP 6.0.6.
Wherever there was a point where I had to render my sequences in FCP (transitions, lower-thirds, etc.) in the output files, the brightness of the video jumps up for the duration of the element/transition then returns to normal once it's over.
My source material is MOV, ProRes 422 PAL 48KHz (deinterlaced), my Sequence Settings are ProRes 422 PAL 48KHz (with Render Control set to ProRes as well) and I output to a self-contained MOV with Current/Item Settings set, so that should mean it's practically the same format throughout my workflow.
I've tried re-building any elements over the video in a fresh sequence, plus re-rendering trying all the different YUV & RGB options in Video Processing and exporting them out but so far have got the same results. Exporting with 'Recompress All Frames' sort of worked, but instead made the whole video brighter LOL
Even curiouser, I exported to DV-PAL 48Khz (working with 4:3 material) and got no problems at all. I've never had this problem exporting ProRes before, so any help on the matter would be grealty appreciated!

In Quicktime 7, open the preferences ( Menu QuickTime Player 7 > Preferences) and on the General tab make sure Use high quality video setting when available and Enable Final Cut Studio Color Compatibility are checked:

Is there any way to disable F14 and F15 brightness controls?

I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to disable the F14 and F15 brighness controls that appear to be built into the Apple OS? I calibrated my cinema display a couple of days ago and was supprised to find that I can still change the display brightness by just bumping the keyboard.

Unfortunately it does not seem possible to disable the brightness keys.
I found this Apple developer technote document.
on page 12 question #19 reads:
How do I disable the video brightness keys available on some keyboards?
Answer: There is currently no way to disable those keys.

Ideas what went wrong?

I just did some DV shooting, and the footage came out very underexposed. I know that the scope read from 0-80, and both during recording and playback the shots all looked fine.
Is there some exposure-related camera setting that isn't reflected in the preview monitor and on the scopes?

My best bet is that the Field Monitor was not properly calibrated, so it was showing the video brighter than it actually was. It's essential to calibrate the Field Mon. at the start of a shoot and whenever viewing conditions for the computer's display change.
To answer your question more directly, I know of no way to adjust an exposure-related setting on the camera such that you won't see the results in OnLocation.
Did you check the Histogram as well as the Waveform Monitor? The histogram can provide a better sense of the overall brightness of a scene.
