Inbound workflow ideas needed

Hi,
I'm trying to reach out to the Indesign community for ideas because I'm getting increasingly frustrated with content creators submitting files for layout that are a pain to work with.
For example, I want to find out if in your role you permit your content creators to summit Microsoft Word files, and what technical standards you set for them ?   Or how does life work for those of you who work at newspapers or magazines where your journalists are obviously not Indesign users ?
Basically my problem is that at the moment I'm just copy pasting from what people submit because its just a mess if you ask Indesign to import a Word file (i.e. you have to spend a lot of time fixing it up ...).  I've got Indesign docs setup with master pages, para/char styles and all the bells and whistles, and basically want to minimise my pain importing content.  For example, is it too extreme for me to be thinking about mandating plain text file submissions ?
I'm not interested in RTFM type answers or links to YouTube clips showing how some Indesign feature theoretically works.... I'd very much like to only hear from people with real life experience in Indesign environments where there are a limited number people with access Indesign and lots of content generators submitting stuff for import, hence my references to newspapers, magazines or similar.  I'd like to hear about battle tested solutions to what must be a common problem in these types of environment.
P.S. Apologies to those of you who are also creative cowreaders who may have seen this question there, I posted here too because I wanted to reach as wide an audience as possible

Well, in my experience, it can be difficult to get contributors to follow any directive, even when in theory, you're making it as simple as possible for them. But it's certainly quick and easy enough to save a Word document as plain text yourself, so there is really no need to shoehorn it into their heads.
True, although I think I really do need to think about some basic standards because at the moment people dump almost any file under the sun on my desk (ranging from pages laid out in Adobe Illustrator   .... through to a whole variety of more broadly available stuff like Word etc.).
So shoehorning it might not be, but definitely perhaps helping them pick a shoe of a reasonable size...

  • Inbound workflow mailer tags don't recognize Undeliverable system messages

We have an inbound Workflow mailer that was not set up initially to view or filter any custom tags. There are 2 "Undeliverable" messages, which seem to be looping in our inbox.
The undeliverable message comes in and gets filed to the "PROCESS" folder. It then seems to be triggering a invalid response template email to be sent, which then attempts to send another email to the invalid address, and gets received again starting the process over again. I have created a new tag on the workflow mailer Advanced setup with "Undeliverable" as the pattern, and "Unavailable" as the action. I have also tried the "Ignore" as the action but neither change sent the message to the Discard folder.

  • Inbound Workflow Mailer Tags not discarding messages

Our workflow mailer tags don't seem to be discarding undeliverable messages. we have a few closed PO notifications that are being returned with "Undeliverable:" subjects, and "Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups" in the body.
I have added the Undeliverable and "Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups" to the tag list in Notification mailer setup, but it makes no difference. I have added the tags, and refreshed the mailer but the messages are still coming into the PROCESS folder instead of being put in the DISCARD folder.
I posted this thread previously and it never received an answer. I was hoping someone else had the issue now and could provide some insight.

  • IDOCAPPL - Inbound Workflow Trigger

I've two configuration scenarios in my SAP system
    1) WE46 - Std. process code EDII has task TS00008068
    2) SWETYPV - IDOCAPPL has event linkage maintained with receiver type as a workflow task.
My question is which of the above actually triggers a work item creation? What is the difference between the two?

  • Workflow Validation - Need Help

I'm fairly new to video editing. Everything below I figured out through trial and error until I found a sequence that seems to work well. I just want to know if it's the best I can make it. Storage space is a non-issue. I have no intention of burning to DVD. I'm not interested in sound settings right now. All of the videos sound good enough. I'll mess with that once I've got this workflow tweaked.
I want the following three files at the end of my projects.
    1) HD Quality MP4 files that I can play on a PC or PS3. I chose MP4 because that's the only format so far that I've found that the PS3 plays. I'm open for recommendations. These should always be deinterlaced.
    2) Good Quality MP4 files that I can post on my webserver for relatives to download and watch.
    3) The best master copy I can get from FCE for future edits. Is this a good idea?
    My Hardware/Software:
    Television - 1080p 65" JVC
    Mac - Macbook Pro 17" C2D 2.5g / 4g Ram
    FCE 4.0.1
    Toast Titanium 9
Camcorder: HG10 1920x1440 60i (Most of my filming is of kids running around. Open for discussion on 24p?) I've been archiving M2TS files from this camcorder for a year. I do not have the original file structure for my archived footage, just the M2TS files. In the future I can import direct to FCE (Tested it and it works fine), but I like the idea of having my source M2TS files with 5.1 sound in-tact.
    MediaInfo 0.7.7.58
Step 1: Use Toast 9 to convert M2TS to .MOV for import into FCE. MediaInfo on source M2TS Files:

    Step 2: Import to FCE
Select Sequence Preset - Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60
When I drop the clip on the timeline, I get:
"For best performance your sequence and External Video should be set to the format of the clips you are editing. Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?" - NO

Step 4: Export FCE to MP4 for Web Use:
Don't have this sorted out yet, but I reckon I'll use the QT Conversion with h.264, 640x480 or something slightly smaller with Preserve Aspect Ratio/Letterbox/Deinterlace
I know there are a ton of details here. If more is needed, please let me know.
    Thanks for the help,
    John

OK, I'll bite. I don't understand the point of Step 1 - Use Toast to convert from .M2TS to .MOV.
I could certainly be missing something, but M2TS and MOV are container formats. So you are really doing two things: converting the video/audio from AVC/AAC in an M2TS container to something FCE can edit, namely AIC in an MOV container. I don't understand this step. FCE's log and transfer does this exact same thing (convert AVCHD to AIC), except without the external software. So, why use Toast if FCE already does this? You can also add metadata to the clips as they are imported so you can make heads or tails of them later.
I'm still learning too. So I hope this reads as a question

    Data Creation in Idoc
IDocs are text encoded documents with a rigid structure that are used to exchange data between R/3 and a foreign system. Instead of calling a program in the destination system directly, the data is first packed into an IDoc and then sent to the receiving system, where it is analyzed and properly processed. Therefore an IDoc data exchange is always an
asynchronous process. The significant difference between simple RFC-calls and IDoc data exchange is the fact, that every action performed on IDocs are protocolled by R/3 and IDocs can be reprocessed if an error occurred in one of the message steps.
While IDocs have to be understood as a data exchange protocol, EDI and ALE are typical use cases for IDocs. R/3 uses IDocs for both EDI and ALE to deliver data to the receiving system. ALE is basically the scheduling mechanism that defines when and between which partners and what kind of data will be exchanged on a regular or event triggered basis. Such a set-up is called an ALE-scenario.
IDoc is a intermediate document to exchange data between two SAP Systems.
*IDocs are structured ASCII files (or a virtual equivalent).
    *Electronic Interchange Document
*They are the file format used by SAP R/3 to exchange data with foreign systems.
*Data Is transmitted in ASCII format, i.e. human readable form
    *IDocs exchange messages
*IDocs are used like classical interface files
IDOC types are templates for specific message types depending on what is the business document, you want to exchange.
WE30 - you can create a IDOC type.
An IDOC with data, will have to be triggered by the application that is trying to send out the data.
FOr testing you can use WE19.

An IDoc is simply a data container that is used to exchange information between any two processes that can understand the syntax and semantics of the data...
1.IDOCs are stored in the database. In the SAP system, IDOCs are stored in database tables.
2.IDOCs are independent of the sending and receiving systems.
3.IDOCs are independent of the direction of data exchange.
The two available process for IDOCs are
    Outbound Process
    Inbound Process
AND There are basically two types of IDOCs.
    Basic IDOCs
Basic IDOC type defines the structure and format of the business document that is to be exchanged between two systems.
    Extended IDOCs
Extending the functionality by adding more segments to existing Basic IDOCs.
To Create Idoc we need to follow these steps:
    Create Segment ( WE31)
    Create Idoc Type ( WE30)
    Create Message Type ( WE81)

  • Workflow Help Needed

I'm not sure if I am utilizing LR 2.0 in the best possible way, as it relates to workflow. I'm a Pet Photographer, and I have very specific needs. I shoot outdoors in RAW, and take way more shots than needed. I need to take a lot of shots as the shooting conditions keep changing, and I'm photographing a moving subject. After I import into LR, I need to cull out the obvious losers. I then have to take the rest and make medium sized JPEGS and rename and number them. So, I'll end up with Fido 1 to Fido 100, and so on. Then, I post them on a password secure website for the client to look over. The client then calls me and we go over the choices, with the client referring to them by number and myself looking at the same numbered set.
I think there must be a more efficient way of doing this than my workflow.
First, the obvious question is, why I don't rename and number them on import. I do not, so I don't end up with gaps in the numbers after I reject the losers. I don't want the client to wonder what happened to Fido, 8, 33, 67 and so on.
So, I import from my camera into a Folder named "Fido", and back-up the whole shoot on my external drive at the same time. ( a problem here, as the previews don't show up when I import from my camera - Canon 30D. Doesn't make much difference as I'm importing all of them, but I wonder why they don't.) Next, I reject the losers. Then, it seems I have to select all that remain and use the "Export" function. I can rename ONE, but cannot find any other way to rename multiples, without exporting them) There, I rename them, and set the size for the JPEGS and the subfolder, which I call JPEGS. A problem I encounter here is that although I try to sequence them starting with "001", they get renumbered starting with "1". This is a problem when I post them, as the photo host puts all the ones together and then the twos, etc. So, they are posted with the ones, teens and then hundreds grouped together, and out of order. Order is important as many shots are sequential action shots.
Previously, I renamed them in Photoshop Elements, as that batch processing function seemed to work better for my needs than LR 1.4
Once I've gotten them renamed and renumbered, and on the host site, I'm ok.
So, Any ideas how I can streamline this in LR 2.0?

Not much difference to a wedding photography workflow.....
    1. In grid view use the x key to select the loosers. When you're done you can delete them all at once from disc. This is (a) quicker and (b) enables you to change your mind - rather than deleting them one at a time. I also use the compare view a lot when culling.
    2. In the grid view select all and then hit F2. You can rename all the files there. I start mt sequence at 10000 to avoid the 1,10,11,...2,21 issue you're having.
    3. Use the web module to create a simple web page that displays the image number, and post that to your site.
    4. ENJOY! (or is that 5?)

  • Workflow help need urgently in Material Master creation

    hi All
I am trying to create a Workflow for creating Material Master views in ECC6 system . Initially Basic data 1 and basic data 2 is created by user and then my workflow is trigerred for subseuqent views .For e.g i need to route the workitem to a user to fiill in Purchasing data and then to another user to fill in accounting data after basic data 1 and basic data 2 is created by so called super user. I was trying to use business object BUS1001006 for this using method CREATEVIEWS but i am getting stuck here with using this method . I dont know how to use this method so that once the user clicks the workitem it should directly go to Puchasing tab view or Accounting tab view (depending on the kind of user currently accessing the workitem).
Any idea how to solve this problem ? It would really be helpful for me
Thanks for your help in advance

    1. I have entered transaction OMS9
    2. Entered the Field selection group as 2
    3. Below the fields option 3 RM03M-WERK280  (Plant)  i double clicked and checked there is hide option.
    4. I came back selected the T001W - Name1 (Name)     I double clicked that in 34 , 35 , 54 was enabled with hide i changed to opt entry but still it seems to be the same.
    5. I came back again and below in the field selection tab checked for the MM01 and MM02 transaction as well as fert, halb, roh as opt entry
It did not work.Kindly guide me if there is some other option available for this to revoke the plant option.
Any help would be really appreciatable.

  • LR Workflow Suggestions Needed

Now that I will be processing all my RAW images through LR, I'd like someone to help me with my workflow. My current workflow is a bit complicated, and may have to stay so, even with LR; however, if anyone has a good idea on how to simplify it, I'd appreciate it.
I am a Pet Photographer (www.NYPetShots.com) and I usually shoot around 130 photos in an outdoor session. This is what I do, as of now.
I shoot RAW and JPEG and import them into the computer with Canon Breezebrowser.
I review all of the shots, in Breezebrowser, and eliminate both the RAW and JPEG duplicate shots which I feel are absolute losers.
I rename and renumber the RAW and JPEGS in Photoshop Elements 3.0, so that they are consecutively numbered and the RAW corresponds to the JPGS; so, Steven107 is the same in RAW and JPG, and so on, and so there are no gaps in the numbers.
I reduce the JPEGS in size around 1/3 in PSE, so I can put them on my SMUGMUG page for the client to review, in a password protected file. I lightly process a few in PSE to include in an email to the client, with the password, so as to give them some idea of what we can do with the finished product.
I import them into the PSE organizer so I can go along with them and the client on the phone. I import the RAW into the LR library.
This seems very cumbersome. What I must do is prepare JPGS in the same naming convention as the RAW, so they can go onto the web for viewing. They must be reduced in size for easy uploading. I have to be able to refer to the exact same named RAW file as the client refers to in the JPG file.
In any event, I'll have to take my finished RAW and export it from LR and finish it in PSE for a quality JPG to send to the printer.
So, does LR give me tools to simplify this? If so, what would you suggest.
    Thanks
    Steven

Its not a question of what I don't want. I need to eliminate the ones that are simply not presentable and let the client see all the rest, including those which are marginal. So, when the client looks at them on the web, it makes a better presentation if they look at Steven 1 through 120, and don't skip from 87 to 94. Gaps are no good. When they say they like Steven 37, I need to be able to find the exact RAW image to work on.
I guess I can do some experimenting to see what a RAW to JPG shot looks like, without applying any adjustment to the image. I have to present something good but not finished to the client. I can't process 120 shots, when the client is only picking 5 or 6. (BTW: Most of my shoots are outdoors, where lighting and other conditions change frequently and fast. It is very rare that a shot is absolutely perfect right out of the camera, and it is not possible to apply the same changes to a most of the shots at the same time. I can batch process groups of shots taken with the same backdrop or locale)

  • Multiple cameras & codecs, workflow ideas plz

    Hello
I need your suggestions please. My son attends a school of over 1100 students. He is in his grade 12 year. He plans to attend Prom. The graduation class will be approximately 150 plus their dates. I'd like to create a video montage of school activities -- from sports to art to $#@&... to play in the background at Prom while the students assemble and before dinner, about 90 minutes.
It will be impossible for me to attend all the activities let alone video them. I'm thinking about asking the students to video their own activities using whatever method they have-- camera phone, flip recorders, HDD recorders or even camcorders. Here's the thing. How do I use the footage from many different sources in FCE 3.5.1? Avoid conversion problems etc., remain creative, and have acceptable quality. Should I get them to load their video on a large external Hard drive at school, and once a week transfer the video to my system. ? what about codec issues etc. Please make some suggestions on workflow and tech issues to overcome. Any ideas will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Carl

    Just to chime in...
Chances are MPEG Streamclip + Flip4Mac + Perian will get you into a spot where you can at least open stuff to convert it. Brian Gary did an episode of MacBreak Studio that will help you out with this part of it http://www.pixelcorps.tv/macbreak_studio019
That being said, the one media source you'll want to avoid is a camera phone. In general the video capabilities of a camera phone are simply not acceptable(there are exceptions). They are often .avi files encoded in Cinepak at 320x240 - not what you want for production footage even in an amateur production. Your best source is going to be digital camera photos since even a small cheap camera takes still that are HD resolution (all you need a 2 megapixel camera or better). JPEGs import quite nicely into FCE. I've done highlight videos from church events and trips and without fail my best source ends up being photos. Digital cameras are ubiquitous so rely heavily on that.
My other piece of advice would be to buy two hard drives actually. One for work, one for backup. This is an awesome project that you're doing (as one who works with teenagers I know the power and value of narrative video projects like this) but it's going to be stretched out over a long period of time so make sure you've got a backup of everything you do.

  • Songwriting workflow suggestions needed!

    Hi,
I am a beginning/intermediate Logic user. Am writing songs/tunes... and am experimenting all over the place. This is leading to an Arrange page nightmare.
For instance, I usually sing a melody over chord changes... so there's my A section let's say. Then I reharmonize the chords a few times before I find just the right combination, then I sometimes fiddle with the melody, then I come up with a few possible B sections... then I have a few arrangement ideas - one bassline.. perhaps a different one... maybe I'll transpose a B section...
Anyway - you get the idea. My arrange page is a MESS. And I mute parts and then listen back - and really end up wanting a little from this take, and this one... and ...
    I get confused.
    Who has workflow suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

What you need to do is comp your takes to one master track, this applies to the bass, the guitar, the flute - whatever. Once you have taken all of the best bits and put them on to a master track, you can put all of the unused bits into a folder, label it "bass takes" for example. Then - very important - change the track from being a folder to being "no output". This way you are assured of not accidentally unmuting things you don't want to hear.
I find that color-coding various takes helps to keep them straight. I usually use red for my first take and move through the color chart for each later take.
So, read the manual about packing folders, coloring objects, changing the track type (from audio to audio instrument to midi to folder to no output).
Organization is crucial. While you are at it, read about saving as a project. You at least want all of the audio files relating to a song/project in one folder. Don't worry so much about having the samples in the project folder unless it is a project you will be moving to another studio.
It also helps to choose the option "name audio files after audio object" on the page that assigns the record path. You can then name the object according to the instrument you are recording. If the object is named "Bass", the takes will be named "Bass#01" and so on.
You have some reading to do!

  • Workflow ideas?

    We have a workflow bottleneck
we use acrobat pro (without any extra services enabled) to get xml data back.
we have a parsing engine that uses that data to compile word documents
we want to have a costs efficient way to use prior xml clients have submitted (eg name, age, address) to pre-fill sections of each subsequent form
we work in a boutique market (and a small country) so while we would love to have forms server and MSQL that would not initially be a cost option
    anyone got any creative ideas?
i had hoped to use import or load xml functions but can find info for that .......
    Any suggestions gratefully recieved.......

Better off doing this with data merge
You will need an excel sheet - but once you have that it's a cinch

  • Disk configuration and workflow help needed for lab video workstation

    Hi All,
Setting up a video editing workstation for a research lab that will use Premeire to edit AVCHD Progressive clips (sometimes with 2 streams side-by-side, but usually single-camera) and export them to .mp4 for later viewing by video coders. We won't be using AfterEffects or adding anything to the videos other than some text (titles, maybe sub-titles).
The other purpose of this workstation is to act as a file server and backup system for other machines in the lab. Coders will be viewing the exported videos via other networked machines and working with Microsoft Office files that will be stored on the workstation's other HDDs. I'll have a physical backup drive and cloud backup via CrashPlan.
I've built a machine that is probably overkill, but the client (my wife) wanted it to be "fast," and the purpose of the machine might change in the future:
    i7-4770K (overclocked a bit)
    16GB RAM
    Asus Z87-Pro
    GeForce GTX 660
I have the OS (W7) and programs on a 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD and currently have two 1TB Velociraptors to use for the Premiere workflow. I'm trying to figure out how to proceed with the purchase of the rest of the drives, and I want to keep the Premiere drives separate from the large storage drives from the lab that are networked and synced to cloud backup.
Following the recommendations for a three-disc configuration I've picked up on these forums, I could set it up like this:
C: (256GB SSD) (OS, programs, pagefile)
    D: (1TB HDD) (media, projects)
E: (1TB HDD) (previews, media cache, exports)
F: (4TB HDD) (backups of media, projects, and exports and storage of other research files)*THIS DRIVE WOULD BE SHARED ON THE NETWORK
G: (4TB external HDD) (backup of F & drive that backs up to CrashPlan)
but it seems that would be a waste of the speed of the second 10k velociraptor. If I added another SSD and RAIDed the Velociraptors it would be:
    C: (256GB SSD) (OS, programs)
D: (Two 1TB Velociraptors in RAID 0) (media, projects)
E: (256GB SSD) (media cache, pagefile)
but would I then need to add another dedicated HDD for previews and exports, or could I store those on the networked F: from above (which would be previews, exports, backups of media and projects, and storage of other research files) without taking a speed hit?
It seems overkill to have a dedicated drive for exports and previews (let's make that the new F:), then have them copy to the first 4TB drive (now G:), then back that up to the second 4TB drive (now H:), then back that up to CrashPlan. However, people might be accessing that network drive at any time, and I don't want that to slow any part of the video process down.
I appreciate any advice ya'll can give me!

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for the encouraging response. I'm leaning toward the non-SSD option at this point.
To make sure I understand, are you suggesting I try using the Velociraptor Raid 0 in the 2 disk configuration suggested by Harm's Guidelines for Disk Usage chart? Like this:
C: (256 GB SSD) (OS, Programs, Pagefile, Media Cache)
D: (1TB x2 in RAID 0) (Media, Projects, Previews, Exports)?
Where I'm still confused there, and in looking at Harm's array suggestions for 5 or more drives, is how performance is affected by having simultaneous read/write operations happening on the same drive, which is what I understood was the reason for spreading out the files on multiple drives. Maybe I don't understand how Premiere's file operations work in practice, or maybe I don't understand RAID 0 well enough.
In the type of editing we'll be doing (minimal) aren't there still times when Premiere will be trying to read and write from the D: drive at the same time, for example during export? Wouldn't the increased speed benefits of RAID 0 for either read or write alone be defeated by asking the array to do both simultaneously?
Maybe the reason the Media Cache is on the SSD in the above configuration is because that is what will be read while writing to something like Exports? But that wouldn't make sense given Harm's chart, which has the Media Cache also located on the array....
Another question is, given that the final home of the exported videos will be on the big internal drive (4TB) anyway, could I set it up like this:
C: (SSD) (OS, Programs, Pagefile, Media Cache)
    D: (2TB RAID 0) (Media, Projects, Previews)
E: (network shared 4TB HDD) (Exports + a bunch of other shared non-video files)
so I don't end up having to copy the exported videos over to the 4TB drive? Do you think it would render significantly faster to the RAID than it would to the 7200 rpm 4TB drive? I'd like to cut out the step of copying exported videos from D: to E: all the time if it wasn't necessary.
    Thanks again.
